Broncos’ updated 53-man roster after 2 transactions

After losing Mike McGlinchey to IR and promoting Dondrea Tillman, the Broncos have an updated 53-man roster for Week 3.

After making three transactions on Wednesday, the Denver Broncos have updated their 53-man roster ahead of a Week 3 showdown with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

First, the Broncos placed right tackle Mike McGlinchey (knee) on injured reserve, ruling him out for at least four games. Denver then promoted pass rusher Dondrea Tillman from the practice squad to the active roster.

The Broncos filled Tillman’s old spot on the practice squad by signing pass rusher Andrew Farmer. Following those moves, here’s a look at Denver’s updated 53-man roster ahead of Week 3.

Broncos’ updated 17-player practice squad with new OLB

Here’s a look at the Broncos’ updated 17-player practice squad following the addition of Andrew Farmer.

After making three roster moves on Wednesday, the Denver Broncos have reshuffled their practice squad ahead of Week 3.

The move that started the reshuffling was right tackle Mike McGlinchey (knee) being placed on injured reserve. To fill McGlinchey’s former spot on the 53-man roster, Denver promoted pass rusher Dondrea Tillman from the practice squad to the active roster.

To fill Tillman’s former practice squad spot, the Broncos brought in pass rusher Andrew Farmer.

The NFL’s standard practice squad size limit is 16 players, but there’s an exception that allows an extra international player to not count against the limit. For Denver, Australian tight end Thomas Yassmin is an exception, giving the Broncos a 17-player practice squad.

So here’s the full list of 17 players on the squad after Wednesday’s moves.

The Broncos’ game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be regionally televised on Fox. Denver is considered a road underdog in Week 3. Two players can be elevated from the practice squad each week.

Broncos officially sign pass rusher to practice squad

The Broncos officially signed outside linebacker Andrew Farmer to their practice squad on Wednesday.

The Denver Broncos have officially signed outside linebacker Andrew Farmer to their practice squad, the team announced Wednesday.

Farmer (6-4, 250 pounds) visited the team Tuesday and officially signed before Wednesday’s practice. The Broncos have been tracking Farmer for a while now. Denver met with Farmer at the 2023 Hula Bowl and he worked out for the team earlier this month.

After going undrafted out of Lane College last spring, Farmer signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as a college free agent. Splitting time between the practice squad and active roster, Farmer appeared in eight games with the Chargers last season. He totaled three tackles on 60 snaps on defense. Farmer also played 48 snaps on special teams in 2023.

Before landing in Los Angeles, Farmer recorded 114 tackles, 17.5 sacks, five pass breakups and two forced fumbles from 2021-2022 at Lane College. The 24-year-old pass rusher will now get a chance to continue his NFL career in Denver.

Rod Smith among 19 former Broncos nominated for Hall of Fame

Rod Smith is one of eight Broncos Super Bowl champions who have been nominated for the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced 167 modern-era finalists for the 2025 class. The list includes 19 former Denver Broncos players, including eight Super Bowl champions.

Former Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith headlines the list of players who won Super Bowls with Denver in the late 1990s. He is joined by center Tom Nalen, kicker Jason Elam, guard Mark Schlereth, linebacker Bill Romanowski and defensive lineman Neil Smith.

The Broncos also had two members of their Super Bowl 50 squad — late wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and cornerback Aqib Talib — nominated for the Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility.

Other players nominated include running backs Clinton Portis and Glyn Milburn, receivers Wes Welker and Brandon Marshall and cornerback Dré Bly. View the full list below.

Why aren’t the Broncos using Marvin Mims on offense?

“You get into trying to feed too many mouths and then no one eats,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said of the team’s WR rotation.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims played just 12 snaps on offense in the team’s season opener against the Seattle Seahawks.

Broncos coach Sean Payton implied last week that the receiver’s limited snaps were not intentional but a result of the game flow.

“It’s part of the challenges when we have multiple receiver groups,” Payton said after Week 1. “Obviously, we anticipated him getting more than just 12 [snaps]. A lot of it depends on how much of the game we’re playing in nickel on offense, three receiver sets or base sets. That can vary, but I think you’ll see his pitch count week-to-week, depending on the team we’re playing, go up.”

After those remarks from Payton, many fans expected to see Mims get more reps in Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Instead, the receiver played just nine snaps on offense.

Troy Franklin was also active in Week 2 because Devaughn Vele was out with a rib injury. Franklin played 12 snaps on offense, but he only received one target. Surely, the Broncos could utilize the speed of Mims and Franklin to jumpstart their struggling offense with some deep shots?

“We [have] a few personnel tags, it’s just trying to find the right combinations,” Payton said. “You get into trying to feed too many mouths and then no one eats. I think it’s a fair question relative to the explosiveness, or what we’re trying to do down the field.”

The top three mouths that Payton is feeding at the moment are Courtland Sutton, Josh Reynolds and Lil’Jordan Humphrey. Vele was above Humphrey before his injury. It seems that there are few targets (or snaps) left over for Mims and Franklin.

We don’t see what the coaches see in practice every day, but it’s perplexing that Mims and Franklin haven’t been able to get more involved, and we still don’t have a clear explanation for their limited utilization.

Broncos make first of several roster moves on deck this week

The Broncos are adding Andrew Farmer to their practice squad. More moves are on deck this week.

The Denver Broncos are signing pass rusher Andrew Farmer to their practice squad, KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis first reported on Tuesday. This marks the first of several roster moves on deck for the Broncos this week.

Denver will have to create a spot for Farmer on the practice squad, either by releasing another player or by promoting somebody from the practice squad to the active roster this week.

After losing right tackle Mike McGlinchey for “about a month” to a sprained MCL, the Broncos seem likely to place him on injured reserve. That would rule McGlinchey out for four games and open up a spot on the 53-man roster.

Denver has three offensive linemen on the 17-player practice squad. If they’re going to promote one of them to the active roster, Will Sherman would presumably be the top candidate. Sherman getting called up from the practice squad could create a spot for Farmer.

The potential McGlinchey and Sherman moves are just speculation at this point. Only the Farmer addition has been confirmed thus far. We’ll find out how the Broncos create a spot for Farmer in the next 48 hours.

5 offensive tackles Broncos could sign to replace Mike McGlinchey

After losing Mike McGlinchey to an MCL injury, the Broncos should consider these free agent offensive tackles.

After losing right tackle Mike McGlinchey for “about a month” to a sprained MCL, the Denver Broncos must now find a replacement.

Matt Peart might be the in-house favorite to start while McGlinchey is sidelined, but the Broncos would be wise to at least bring in more depth at the position. Alex Palczewski filled in for McGlinchey for two snaps on Sunday, but those were the first two snaps of his career, and rookie Frank Crum was inactive for each of the team’s first two games this season.

Here’s a quick list of five outside players Denver could consider bringing in for workouts this week.

Free agent offensive tackles

1. Billy Turner: The 32-year-old vet had two previous stints with the Broncos and has experience at both tackle and guard.

2. Cam Fleming: Another ex-Denver tackle, the 32-year-old Fleming filled in for one game in 2023 and started 15 games in 2022.

3. D.J. Humphries: A 30-year-old former first-round pick who started 98 games for the Arizona Cardinals from 2016-2023, including 16 games last season.

4. Donovan Smith: He started 12 games for the Kansas City Chiefs last season. The 31-year-old former second-round pick won Super Bowls with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chiefs.

5. David Bakhtiari: The decorated 32-year-old veteran has struggled with injuries, playing just one game last season and one game in 2021. He was healthy for 11 games in 2022. If healthy, Bakhtiari would be an intriguing option for the Broncos.

Denver will likely bring in tackles for tryouts in the coming days. If McGlinchey is placed on injured reserve, that would free up a roster spot for a potential signing this week.

Report: Broncos OT Mike McGlinchey out ‘about a month’ with MCL sprain

The Broncos will be without right tackle Mike McGlinchey for the next month, according to a report from NFL Network.

Denver Broncos right tackle Mike McGlinchey is expected to miss “about a month” after spraining his MCL during a 13-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, according to a report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Garafolo noted that evaluations are ongoing so the timeline “is somewhat fluid,” but the sprain is “significant,” so McGlinchey will miss time. If the Broncos believe the tackle is set to miss a month, they could place him on injured reserve to save a spot on the active roster. Players on IR are eligible to return after four games.

McGlinchey, 29, signed a five-year, $87.5 million contract with Denver in 2023. He started 16 games last fall and the first two games of this season before suffering the MCL injury.

After previously losing top backup swing guard/tackle Quinn Bailey to a season-ending ankle injury, the top remaining backup tackle on the depth chart is Matt Peart, although it was Alex Palczewski who filled in for two snaps on Sunday. The Broncos also have and Frank Crum on the active roster and Will Sherman on the practice squad.

Denver wanted to re-sign Demontrey Jacobs to the practice squad in August, but he was claimed off waivers by the New England Patriots after roster cuts.

The list of free agent offensive tackles available includes Cam Fleming, David Bakhtiari, Jason Peters and ex-Bronco Billy Turner. For now, Peart is probably the next man up in Denver.

Steelers gave Russell Wilson a ‘petty game ball’ after beating Broncos

After beating the Broncos, the Steelers gave Russell Wilson a ‘petty game ball.’ Justin Fields said Wilson was done dirty in Denver.

Russell Wilson returned to Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday, but he did not start against his former team.

Wilson is still dealing with a calf injury, so the Pittsburgh Steelers opted to start Justin Fields against the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Despite being inactive, Wilson still dressed for the game as Pittsburgh’s emergency third-string quarterback.

Fields went 13-of-20 passing for 117 yards with one touchdown and no turnovers in a 13-6 win over the Broncos. After the game, Fields said, “I think we all know Russ got kind of [done] dirty last year.”

Fields also revealed that Wilson and two other ex-Denver players — wide receiver Brandon Johnson and punter Corliss Waitman — received “petty game balls” after the Steelers beat their former team.

After the game, Wilson took to Twitter/X to celebrate the “Team W.”

Wilson completed 66.4% of his passes last season and threw 26 touchdown passes compared to eight interceptions. He was also sacked 45 times in 15 games before being benched.

Broncos coach Sean Payton opted to release Wilson this spring, a move that created the largest dead money cap hit in NFL history ($53 million). Payton replaced Wilson by using a first-round pick to select Oregon quarterback Bo Nix in the 2024 NFL draft.

Through two games this season, Nix has no touchdown passes and four interceptions and Denver’s off to an 0-2 start.

Broncos inactives: Troy Franklin will make NFL debut vs. Steelers

Broncos inactives today: Zach Wilson*, Devaughn Vele (ribs), Blake Watson, Kris Abrams-Draine, Frank Crum, Lucas Krull and Eyioma Uwazurike.

The Denver Broncos have announced their list of seven inactive players for Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson*, wide receiver Devaughn Vele (ribs), running back Blake Watson, cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine, offensive tackle Frank Crum, tight end Lucas Krull and defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike are inactive today.

*Technically, Wilson is still available to play as the team’s emergency third-string quarterback behind starter Bo Nix and primary backup Jarrett Stidham, but he’s on the inactive list and does not count against the game-day roster.

With the exception of Wilson, these inactive players are members of the 53-man roster who are not eligible to play against the Steelers. They will be reactivated on Monday.

After being inactive last week, rookie wide receiver Troy Franklin is active today and set to make his NFL debut against Pittsburgh. Left tackle Garett Bolles (calf) is also active.

Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson (calf) is inactive, but he will serve as Pittsburgh’s emergency third-string QB on Sunday.

Elsewhere on the roster front, Denver elevated wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey and running back Tyler Badie from the practice squad to the game-day roster on Saturday. Badie gets the nod as RB3 over Watson today.

The Broncos’ game against the Steelers will be regionally televised on CBS. Denver is considered a betting underdog despite playing at home.
