WATCH: Panthers DT Bravvion Roy picks off Ravens QB Lamar Jackson

We have ourselves a big boy pick! 330-pound DT Bravvion Roy snatched an interception off Ravens QB Lamar Jackson in Week 11.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson hadn’t committed a turnover in his previous four games heading into his Week 11 clash with the Carolina Panthers. Well, that changed—in a very, very unlikely way.

With just over nine minutes remaining in the second quarter of Sunday’s matchup, Panthers defensive tackle Bravvion Roy got right in the way of a Jackson throw—one that would’ve found the hands of star tight end Mark Andrews on a first-and-10. And by “right in the way of,” we mean the 330-pounder eclipsed the ball entirely, and snatched it . . .

The interception was the first of Roy’s three-year career. He had compiled just seven tackles and one pass defensed over six games entering the afternoon.

Roy also displayed some nice timing on the takeaway, as the pick halted what was a potential scoring drive for Baltimore. Jackson and the Ravens were set up on the Panthers’ 29-yard line before the improbable play.

Panthers place C Pat Elflein on IR

The Panthers have placed C Pat Elflein on IR and activated DT Bravvion Roy a day ahead of their Week 7 matchup with the Buccaneers.

Carolina Panthers center Pat Elflein has had himself a solid 2022 campaign. Unfortunately, however, it’ll have to be put on hold.

On Saturday, the Panthers announced they’ve now placed the 28-year-old lineman on injured reserve. Elflein, who has been dealing with a hip injury, missed practice throughout the week in the lead-up to Sunday’s Week 7 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Prior to this setback, Elflein played every offensive snap for the Panthers through six games this season. Over that time, he’s earned an overall grade of 59.8 from Pro Football Focus, who has also attributed the sixth-year veteran with just six pressures (one sack) in 219 pass-blocking attempts.

In his place will be Bradley Bozeman, a free-agent signing from this past spring. Bozeman, who was the favorite to initially start at center, sustained a setback of his own—an ankle injury that kept him out action to close out the summer.

Carolina has also activated defensive tackle Bravvion Roy from IR. Roy will provide some much needed depth on the interior of the line tomorrow with the probable absence of starter Matt Ioannidis.

Panthers QB Sam Darnold designated to return from IR

After a six-week absence, Panthers QB Sam Darnold has been designated to return from IR.

Who would have ever thought Sam Darnold could be a sight for sore eyes anymore?

Well, that was the case for the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday afternoon, as the fifth-year quarterback hit the practice field following a six-week absence. So that, of course, means Darnold has now been officially designated to return from injured reserve.

He landed there prior to the start of the regular season, after Buffalo Bills defensive tackle C.J. Brewer landed on him in the team’s exhibition finale on Aug. 26. Darnold, who was carted away into the locker room that evening, would later be diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain.

Now that he’s gotten the clearance to join in on practice sessions again, the 25-year-old will have 21 days to be shifted over to the active 53-man roster. The Panthers can choose activate Darnold—as well as defensive tackle Bravvion Roy, who was also designated to return from IR—at any time during the three-week window.

Panthers place DT Bravvion Roy on IR

The Panthers announced on Tuesday that DT Bravvion Roy has been placed on the IR with a hamstring injury. He’ll be out for at least the next four weeks.

The Carolina Panthers began the 2022 regular season with some relatively decent depth in the middle of their defensive line. Unfortunately, that group took a hit this weekend.

As announced by the team on Tuesday, defensive tackle Bravvion Roy has been placed on injured reserve. He will now be out for at least the next four weeks.

Roy was carted away from the Week 2 loss to the New York Giants. The 25-year-old has since been diagnosed with a hamstring injury.

Carolina drafted Roy in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Baylor University. Over his three professional seasons, the 6-foot-1, 330-pounder has recorded 61 combined tackles, a sack, eight quarterback hits and a pair of passes defensed over 34 games.

Summer standout Marquan McCall, who signed on with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent this spring, replaced Roy to finish up Sunday’s action at MetLife Stadium. So look for McCall, who registered three tackles against the Giants, to assume that spot behind starters Derrick Brown and Matt Ioannidis for the foreseeable future.

Panthers snap count standouts: All Cam Newton, no P.J. Walker

Well, so much for the Panthers’ two-quarterback system, huh?

The Carolina Panthers were getting on everyone’s last nerve by blissfully employing their odd two-quarterback approach. Heck, even P.J. Walker admitted that it isn’t much fun, and he’s the backup.

Well, maybe he had more fun not playing at all in the team’s 31-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 15 . . .

Panthers PFF grades: Best and worst from Week 15 vs. Bills

PFF saddled QB Cam Newton with the Panthers’ lowest offensive grade in the Week 15 loss to the Bills.

Let’s take a look at how Pro Football Focus saw the Carolina Panthers’ 31-14 defeat at the hands of the Buffalo Bills here in Week 15.

Panthers show out for ‘My Cause My Cleats’ in Week 14

Check out some of the Panthers’ 2021 causes through their special Week 14 kicks.

Continuing in the NFL’s annual tradition, the Carolina Panthers brought out their passions as part of 2022’s “My Cause My Cleats” for Week 14.

Let’s take a look at some of the players’ special kicks and the causes they represented during the team’s Sunday contest against the Atlanta Falcons.

Panthers rookie watch: Yetur Gross-Matos flashes monster potential

If he can stay on the field consistently, Gross-Matos might just develop into a dominant defender like Brian Burns.

The Panthers lost their seventh game out of eight yesterday, falling to the Broncos 32-27 at home.

On the bright side, a couple of Carolina’s rookies stepped up with a significant increase in playing time. Here’s how the kids did this week.

Yetur Gross-Matos flashed a lot

Gross-Matos has flown under the radar a bit this year but he flashed a lot on Sunday with his ability to get consistent pressure on Denver quarterback Drew Lock. He played 69% of the team’s defensive snaps and finished with four tackles (one for a loss) and two QB hits.

If he can stay on the field, Gross-Matos might just develop into a dominant defensive end like Brian Burns.

Jeremy Chinn is going to be special

Every week Chinn finds a new way to impact the game. Against Minnesota, he ran back two fumbles for touchdowns. This time around, Chinn blew up Lock on a blitz that almost resulted in a defensive score for Efe Obada.

Chinn also made several dazzling tackles in the open field. He leads all NFL rookies with 94 this season.

Bravvion Roy stepped up

With starter Zach Kerr on the reserve/COVID-19 list, sixth-round pick Bravvion Roy earned another start and did well for himself. He posted three tackles, including half of one for a loss.

Derrick Brown still searching for first sack

Carolina’s first-round pick is still looking for his first sack in the NFL. Brown got a few pressures on Lock and one QB hit but still couldn’t get into the sack column. At least he didn’t have any penalties this week.

Seventh-round pick Stantley Thomas-Oliver saw his defensive snap count drop to just four with the return of Donte Jackson to the lineup, Myles Hartsfield continues to be a core special teams contributor and Kenny Robinson was inactive again.

Wach: Bravvion Roy gets the call from Panthers coach Matt Rhule

In the end, Rhule only picked one prospect who he coached last season.

The Carolina Panthers signed several former Temple players in free agency this year. That list included linebacker Tahir Whitehead, wide receiver Robby Anderson, quarterback P.J. Walker, wide receiver Keith Kirkwood and tight end Colin Thompson.

This led to a lot of speculation that Carolina would have a draft class heavy on players who had previously worked with Matt Rhule. Some analysts toyed with the idea of an all Baylor/Temple mock draft.

In the end, Rhule only picked one prospect who he coached last season: Baylor defensive tackle Bravvion Roy, who was picked in the sixth round. Watch Roy get the call from his former/current coach on Day 3 of the 2020 NFL draft.

Roy is a true nose tackle who will likely serve as the main backup behind first-round pick Derrick Brown.

Panthers No. 184 pick: Scouting Report for DT Bravvion Roy

Panthers No. 184 pick: Scouting Report for DT Bravvion Roy

With their No. 184 overall pick the Panthers selected defensive tackle Bravvion Roy. Roy played under Matt Rhule at Baylor and has been praised by Rhule as a strong leader and high character individual.

Let’s take a closer look at his scouting report and see what he brings to the table for Carolina’s new-look defense.

Strengths:

Roy has solid size for the defensive tackle position, measuring in at 6-foot-1, 333 pounds. He did not receive an invitation to the combine and was listed as one of the biggest snubs. Roy has relatively short arms, but holds his weight well throughout his frame with a thick lower half. He is quick out of his stance and shows that he can be an A or B gap shooter on early downs. Roy has some potential in his pass rush moves, as he has displayed the ability to rip and swim with fluidity. Overall, Roy will be utilized best as a rotational, early down lineman who can be an A or B gap penetrator.

Weaknesses:

Roy will have a tough time improving his pass rush techniques due to his short arms and lack of length. He is pretty much limited to being utilized as an early down gap penetrator in the NFL. He will also need to improve his pad level and play strength. This will help his anchoring ability in early down situations against the run.

Fit with the Panthers:

Roy should be a nice fit in Carolina reuniting with Rhule and defensive coordinator Phil Snow. Roy is a high-character player who plays with a non stop motor. He may not see the field much in 2020, but the Panthers will be able to bring in Roy on early downs to help stuff the run alongside Derrick Brown and Kawann Short in the near future.
