Recent signings spell the end of Germain Ifedi’s tenure in Seattle

The Seahawks added three o-linemen in the first week of free agency, almost certainly spelling the end of Germain Ifedi’s tenure in Seattle.

The Seattle Seahawks’ recent binge of free agent offensive lineman likely spells the end of the Germain Ifedi era at right tackle.

Ifedi is an unrestricted free agent after the team did not tender him a fifth-year option last offseason, which would have paid the 25-year-old $10.3 million dollars in 2020.

Ifedi is expected to command a similar amount per year on the open market, especially after Halapoulivaati Vaitai and George Fant, who were both backups last season, each signed deals around $10 million annually.

If the Seahawks weren’t willing to pay Ifedi $10 million last offseason, they are even less likely to do so now, after they added a potential replacement in the form of former Jets tackle Brandon Shell.

Shell’s recent grades on Pro Football Focus are similar to Ifedi’s, and he commits penalties roughly half as frequently. Considering his modest $5.5 million per year contract, Shell is a comparable talent at half the cost – so it’s easy to see why Seattle would bring him into the mix.

Seattle also added center/guard B.J. Finney and tackle/tight end Cedric Ogbuehi. Finney could challenge for the starting left guard spot, potentially pushing Jamarco Jones back out to tackle, while Ogbuehi expects to fill the Fant role as a backup tackle and occasional sixth lineman/tight end.

All this points to a future offensive line without Ifedi in the fold, as the former first round pick will likely have to try to find a starting job elsewhere for the first time in his NFL career.

Seahawks agree to terms with tackle Cedric Ogbuehi

Cedric Ogbuehi will get a fresh start in Seattle, where the Seahawks could play him in the extra tight end role vacated by George Fant.

The Seattle Seahawks indicated they hoped to keep some continuity along their offensive line heading into 2020. That appears to be out the window, however, after the team signed their third new offensive lineman in the last 24 hours, agreeing to terms with former Jacksonville tackle Cedric Ogbuehi, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Ogbuehi joins tackle Brandon Shell and center/guard B.J. Finney as newcomers to Seattle’s offensive line, a group that is almost certainly moving on from Germain Ifedi and Mike Iupati, and already lost George Fant to the Jets.

Ogbuehi has yet to live up to his billing as a first round pick by the Browns in 2015. He has appeared in 49 games over the last five seasons, including 25 starts – none in the past two years.

He is likely on hand as added depth at the two tackle spots, and could compete with Shell to start at right tackle. Ogbuehi also has some experience in the sixth lineman/tight end role, so perhaps Seattle views him as a replacement for Fant in that role.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Jets free agent tackle Brandon Shell heading to Seattle

The Jets already agreed to terms with a former Seahawks offensive tackle, so Seattle returned the favor.

The Jets already agreed to terms with a former Seahawks offensive tackle, so Seattle returned the favor.

The Seahawks struck a two-year, $11 million deal with New York free agent Brandon Shell on Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal follows Gang Green’s addition of George Fant, who spent the first three years of his career in Seattle.

Shell, meanwhile, spent the last four seasons with the Jets after being drafted in the fifth round out of South Carolina in 2016. He started all 26 games that he played in from 2017-2018 and made 11 starts in 15 games last season.

A right tackle, Shell will replace Germain Ifedi in Seattle. Ifedi is a free agent.

Shell’s departure brings the Jets one step closer to having zero members of their 2016 draft class still on the roster. Lachlan Edwards and Jordan Jenkins are free agents as well, and neither is expected back at this point. Should they leave in free agency, they would join Shell, Darron Lee, Chrisitan Hackenberg, Juston Burris and Charone Peake as draft classmates turned ex-Jets.

Seahawks agree to terms with free agent tackle Brandon Shell

The Seattle Seahawks agreed to terms with tackle Brandon Shell, which could spell the end of Germain Ifedi’s tenure in the Emerald City.

The Seattle Seahawks agreed to terms with their second free agent offensive lineman in as many days, with ESPN’s Adam Schefter reporting that former Jets tackle Brandon Shell is coming to Seattle on a two-year, $11 million dollar deal.

Shell appeared in 15 games for the Jets last year, starting 11. He earned an overall grade of 63.6 from Pro Football Focus, and is expected to come in and compete right away for Seattle’s vacant right tackle position.

The 28-year-old was a fifth round pick by the Jets back in 2016 out of South Carolina University. He has made 40 starts in his NFL career, and has some experience playing guard and lining up in the tight end/sixth tackle role as well, which makes him a versatile weapon for Pete Carroll and Mike Solari to utilize in a variety of different roles next season, if need be.

However, this signing likely indicates that Germain Ifedi, who is also a free agent, won’t be back in Seattle next season.

Jets Free Agent Profile: What to do with OT Brandon Shell?

Jets Wire takes a look at whether or not New York should bring back cornerback and impending free-agent offensive tackle Brandon Shell?

Before Joe Douglas can focus on who he plans to target in free agency come March, he’ll have a handful of in-house decisions to make.

The Jets have 32 players set to hit the open market this offseason. Some don’t figure to factor into New York’s plans for 2020, while it’s safe to assume the Jets would like to keep others around for a while. Either way, Douglas has a lot of work to do in his first offseason on the job.

Brandon Shell entered 2019 as New York’s starting right tackle before eventually losing the job to Chuma Edoga. Shell proceeded to make spot starts on the line after his benching due to injuries before taking over for Edoga at the end of the season when he hit injured reserve. Shell played a bit better down the stretch, placing himself in consideration to return in 2020. Will Douglas opt to bring him back? Let’s evaluate the situation in Jets Wire’s latest free agent profile.

Pros of returning

Shell is only 27. He didn’t have the best season, but there is plenty of time for him to get back on track with the proper tutelage.

The South Carolina product improved his play in the final weeks of the season, so there is reason to hope his progression at the end of the year could carry over into next season. If the Jets opt to bring him back, Douglas is likely banking on Shell to return to the form that made him a promising starter on New York’s offensive line a couple of years ago.

Cons of returning

Shell did not show New York’s new regime much in 2019. Douglas knows what good offensive line play looks like and Shell did not provide it on a consistent basis.

Shell is a decent enough depth piece, but he has no connection to the new regime. It’s tough to see Douglas keeping a player he has no prior connection to after the way he played last season.

The verdict

Once upon a time, it looked like Shell would be an integral part of the Jets offensive line for years. Things have not panned out that way and now, there is a strong possibility Shell has a new home next season.

The offensive line is going to be a point of emphasis for New York in the draft. With Edoga returning for his second season and the Jets looking to get younger overall, there likely will not be a spot for Shell at One Jets Drive come March.

Adam Gase, offensive line among Jets’ Studs & Duds in loss to Bengals

The Jets dropped their second game to a winless opponent this season and are now 4-8 with four games remaining after their 22-6 loss in Ohio

The Jets lost to a team that is 1-18 in its last 19 games on Sunday.

Adam Gase’s squad was a no show in Cincinnati, thinking they already had the game won when they arrived. Instead, New York was on the wrong side of NFL history for the second time this season.

The Jets gave the 0-7 Miami Dolphins their first win. No NFL team has ever given two teams who started 0-7 or worse their first wins of the season. New York became that team Sunday, handing Cincinnati its first win of the season and giving Zac Taylor the first win of his head coaching career.

For the Jets, it was two steps back in the wrong direction. Sam Darnold ended the game with a pronounced limp and the Jets offense didn’t sniff the red zone once.

Here are the best and worst players from the Jets’ sluggish and embarrassing Week 13 loss.

Dud: The Offensive Line

(David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports)

Pass protection has been an issue all season for the Jets, but it reared its ugly head in the 22-6 loss.

The Jets offensive line was guilty of six holds and several back-breaking penalties. The Jets offense had no chance with the Bengals defensive front wreaking havoc on the backfield on every play.

Offensive line play has been key to the Jets’ success all season, so it didn’t help that Kelvin Beachum and Tom Compton were penalty machines while Brandon Shell was a turnstile.

Jets vs. Bengals: A chance at 4 straight, Darryl Roberts’ return among pregame storylines

Jets Wire breaks down Gang Green’s Week 13 matchup with the Bengals by taking a look at four pregame storylines to keep an eye on.

It’s hard to believe the Jets will have a chance at their fourth win in a row against the Bengals on Sunday considering where the team was less than a month ago.

With three consecutive wins in its back pocket, New York has climbed out of the conference basement to nearly return to respectability. A win over Cincinnati in Week 13 would give the Jets a 5-7 record — a far cry from the 1-7 mark the team possessed four weeks ago.

What should Jets fans be aware of before Gang Green takes the field this weekend? Let’s take a look at some pregame storylines to keep an eye on.

The Jets are finally playing the way everyone expected them to entering 2019.

Albeit against underwhelming competition, New York has put together three consecutive dominant performances. The Jets have outscored opponents 102-47 over that span and have left no doubt with each of their last three victories.

New York has a real chance to make it four in a row against a winless Bengals squad. It would be very Jets to lose this game, but odds are that isn’t going to happen.

Report: Jets RT Chuma Edoga out multiple weeks with MCL sprain

Jets rookie right tackle Chuma Edoga will be out for mutiple weeks after suffering a Grade 2 MCL Sprain in the Jets 34-3 win over Oakland.

Rookie right tackle Chuma Edoga left the Jets’ 34-3 win over the Raiders with a knee injury. Now, he’ll miss significant time.

Following the win, Edoga came into the locker room with a brace on his left leg, according to Connor Hughes of The Athletic. Edoga went for an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the injury

Now, the Jets will be without Edoga for an extended period of time due to a Grade 2 MCL sprain, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Edoga was the Jets’ third-round pick out of USC in the 2019 NFL draft. He took over as a starter in Week 5 and has played eight games at both tackle positions due to the Jets’ constant reshuffling on the offensive line.

The Jets have had to play musical chairs on the offensive line due to injuries. Ryan Kalil and Brian Winters are both out for the season, while Kelechi Osemele is no longer on the team.

With Edoga sidelined, Brandon Shell will slide back in at right tackle, while the banged-up Kelvin Beachum (ankle) will continue to man the left side. If he cannot go against Cincinnati in Week 13, Conor McDermott is the next man up on the Jets depth chart.
