12 players projected to make the Lions practice squad

These 12 players from the Lions’ final preseason game roster should make the team’s 16-man practice squad

One of the first orders of business for the Detroit Lions following the conclusion of the roster cutdowns and initial waiver claim period is to form the 16-man practice squad. Teams can start signing players to the practice squad after Wednesday, August 30th at 12 p.m. ET.

Most teams prefer to stock the practice squad with players who were on the roster for the final preseason game. The Lions did that last year and are expected to do so once again.

Here are 12 Lions expected to be cut by Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline who should make the practice squad.

Lions rookie report: Strong showing from Detroit’s rookies in win over Giants

The Lions beat the Giants 21-16 and relied heavily on contributions from the rookie class

The Detroit Lions came out victorious from their first preseason game of 2023. Not only did they come out with a win, but they got early returns on their investments from their rookie class.

You can’t talk about this game without mentioning the wide receivers. Detroit has three first-year receivers on the team and all three made an impact against the Giants.

Chase Cota, undrafted out of Oregon, played for most of the game and had quite the professional debut with four catches for 60 yards. Seventh-round pick Antoine Green aided early on in the game with three catches of his own for 36 yards. Dylan Drummond, who has picked up some attention throughout training camp, had a quieter game but still contributed nonetheless. The former Eastern Michigan wideout earned 12 yards on two receptions and also took one kick return for 19 yards.

Undrafted rookie quarterback Adrian Martinez came in for Nate Sudfeld in the fourth quarter and showed some flashes of potential. Known for being mobile in college, he ran the ball 5 times with his longest gain being 10 yards. He capped off his day with a rushing touchdown to take Detroit into the lead. He didn’t look as good as a passer, only completing four-of-seven attempts for 37 yards, but his performance should earn him more playing time in the remaining preseason showings.

Tight end Sam LaPorta saw the field plenty in the first half of the game, but did not contribute much to the box score. He was utilized often in 12-personnel sets alongside Brock Wright and the two even lined up side-by-side at times. LaPorta was targeted once but dropped the pass.

First-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs impressed early on despite some poor offensive line play up front. The shifty running back showed an ability to find his way upfield in situations that would normally be a loss of yardage. He also briefly flashed his skills as a receiver with one catch for 18 yards. He also proved himself to be a team player as he is credited with a tackle on New York’s Jason Pinnock following an interception from Sudfeld.

Fellow rookie running back Mohamed Ibrahim did not share the same successes. Ibrahim averaged 2.3 yards per carry on his four touches and had to briefly go to the locker room wit the trainer after suffering a minor injury.

On the offensive line, fifth-round pick Colby Sorsdal started the game at right guard and it became evident that there would be a learning curve for the former William & Mary lineman. Undrafted rookies Brad Cecil and Connor Galvin served as the respective second-team center and right tackle.

On the other side of the ball, defensive lineman Brodric Martin may have stood out size-wise, but his one tackle on the day leaves us waiting to see what made the Western Kentucky product worthy of a costly trade-up in the third round. Fellow rookie linemen Chris Smith and Cory Durden saw limited action against the Giants but did not do anything noteworthy.

First-round pick Jack Campbell had a very impressive debut for the Lions. The former Iowa Hawkeye had four tackles and a pass defense on the day and seemed to bring life to the team’s run defense. With Alex Anzalone not suited up, Campbell got the start alongside Derrick Barnes.

Undrafted linebacker Trevor Nowaske had his name called on the broadcast a few times, and for good reason. The Saginaw Valley State standout also put up four tackles in this matchup against New York.

The four rookies in Detroit’s secondary were some of the biggest playmakers of this group. Safety Brandon Joseph made impactful plays everywhere on the field. On top of his game-sealing interception, he also played well against the run and even made a tackle-for-loss.

Nickel defender Brian Branch got his first start as a Lion and immediately made plays. Not even four minutes into the game, he sniffed out a screen to veteran Cole Beasley and quickly took him down for a loss of yardage.

Undrafted rookie Starling Thomas has been the training camp darling of 2023, and he continued to impress against the Giants. His biggest contributions were on special teams, where he excelled as a gunner on the punt team and also put up some key blocks on kick and punt returns throughout the game.

Lions UDFA profile: Notre Dame S Brandon Joseph

Joseph was considered a potential first-round talent before transferring from Northwestern to Notre Dame in 2022

One of the most familiar names the Detroit Lions signed to a free agent contract after the 2023 NFL draft was Notre Dame safety Brandon Joseph. Aside from playing for a major program, Joseph was a common fixture in the first round of “too early” mock drafts a year ago.

Now Joseph enters the Lions’ rookie minicamp next week as an undrafted free agent trying to prove that the prior ballyhoo wasn’t unwarranted.

The top quality that made Joseph so appealing entering the 2022 college season was his outstanding productivity in pass defense. Playing at Northwestern primarily as a free safety allowed Joseph to roam the intermediate range and flow toward the sidelines freely to make plays on the ball. He picked off nine combined passes in the 2020-2021 seasons for the Wildcats, but his coverage prowess extended beyond making plays on the ball.

Joseph transferred to Notre Dame for his final season, and it simply didn’t fit well. The Fighting Irish used Joseph more in a split safety or even box safety role. To be blunt, Joseph’s poor tackling and unteady run defense that he showed at Northwestern should have nipped that experiment in the bud. He’s not a reliable presence against the run, and putting him in more traffic closer to the line of scrimmage exacerbates his struggles.

In short, he’s much more of a Kerby Joseph (no relation) type of safety than he is a Kyle Hamilton type, but Notre Dame largely asked him to replace the 2022 Ravens’ first-rounder (who quietly played great after a slow rookie start). His tacking issues are unlikely to ever improve enough to be relied upon as a full-time player. Joseph takes too many poor angles, lacks good body control to make quick adjustments to shifty runners, and doesn’t play with as much power, not even for a 192-pound DB.

If Joseph is going to make the Lions as an undrafted rookie, he’ll need to flash the ball skills once again. He doesn’t have great long speed or gaudy athleticism; Joseph wins with smart positioning, quick reactions and a good initial burst to the point of attack. He did handle some return specialist duties, too.

Detroit Lions 2023 undrafted free agent tracker

Tracking all the undrafted free agent signed by the Detroit Lions after the 2023 NFL draft

The 2023 NFL draft might be over, but the Detroit Lions are not done adding players. Prospects who went undrafted during the seven rounds are now free to sign with any team.

Detroit GM Brad Holmes has typically been one of the most aggressive in signing undrafted free agents, or UDFAs.

Here are the players the Lions have either signed as undrafted free agents or invited to the rookie minicamp for an in-person audition. Some reported signings are subject to change.

Top 25 Most All-Time NFL Draft Picks by College

Who will climb and who might fall this week?

The 2023 NFL draft gets started on Thursday night with the first round before rounds two and three take place Friday evening.  Saturday then sees the final four rounds happen in downtown Kansas City which happens to be home to the most recent Super Bowl champions.

You’ll certainly see more players drafted from the biggest college football programs.  Alabama and Ohio State could very easily have the first three picks all be products of their programs.

Here at Fighting Irish Wire we’re excited to see where [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag], [autotag]Isaiah Foskey[/autotag], [autotag]Brandon Joseph[/autotag], [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag], and perhaps another player or two from Notre Dame end up.

So which programs have the most draft picks of all-time though as we get set for the latest edition of the draft?  Here are the colleges with the 25-most all-time draft picks ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

Notre Dame sees just 4 players invited to NFL combine

Surprised there weren’t more?

When the NFL scouting combine takes place in Indianapolis in February, Notre Dame will be represented.  It won’t be particularly loaded with Golden Domers but it will be represented.

Offensive lineman [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag], tight end [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag], safety [autotag]Brandon Joseph[/autotag], and edge rusher [autotag]Isaiah Foskey[/autotag] were all invited.  None of those players are particularly surprising to hear be invited but perhaps the ones that weren’t come as at least a little bit of surprise.

Both [autotag]Jayson Ademilola[/autotag] and [autotag]Justin Ademilola[/autotag] didn’t get an invitation after having solid careers on Notre Dame’s defensive line.  Offensive lineman Josh Lugg was also left of the list of invitees.  Perhaps none of the three on their own are that surprising to see get invited but if given those three names I would have guessed at least one would have gotten an invite based simply on what Notre Dame has put in the NFL from their positions in recent years.

Is Notre Dame a top 10 team entering 2023? 247Sports doesn’t think so

A bit low don’t you think?

As the college football season is set to finish this evening with [autotag]TCU[/autotag] facing [autotag]Georgia[/autotag] in the [autotag]College Football Playoff[/autotag] finale, it’s that time to look ahead at who will challenge to be in the game next year.

For [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag], they are losing some stars (tight end [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag], defensive end [autotag]Isaiah Foskey[/autotag] and safety [autotag]Brandon Joseph[/autotag]) while they found a big time up-grade at quarterback with Wake Forest transfer [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag].

The player movement has many believing that the Irish will contend for a CFP spot but it seems like 247Sports isn’t thinking the same way. They released their way-too-early top 25 today and they ranked [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and Notre Dame 13th.

It seems a bit low considering they have made an upgrade at the most important position with plenty of returning stars (cornerback [autotag]Ben Morrison[/autotag], offensive tackles [autotag]Joe Alt[/autotag] and [autotag]Blake Fisher[/autotag]). The highest vote they received was 10th, with is right around where they should have been rated.

[autotag]Tennessee[/autotag] has more questions than the Irish, they were ranked 12th. [autotag]Clemson[/autotag] had an up-and-down year and “return” their starting quarterback who just started his first game. The Tigers were 11th while [autotag]Oregon[/autotag] did make sense to me at 10.[autotag]Bo Nix[/autotag] returning helps while a big time recruiting class is on their way to Eugene.

It’s obvious that this could change, with the second signing period and more player movement in the transfer portal but having Notre Dame at 13, even right now, is too low.  Find out below where every team 247Sports ranked ended up.

Notre Dame defender returning for sixth season

At Notre Dame, this is called the Shaun Crawford plan.

Notre Dame is getting an added boost of experience in the secondary for 2023 as safety [autotag]D.J. Brown[/autotag] has announced he’s returning for his sixth and final season of eligibility.  Brown redshirted in 2018 and is exercising the extra year of eligibility granted to all players due to the COVID year of 2020 to make this possible.

Brown has three career interceptions, all of which came in the 2021 campaign.  He started 10 games for Notre Dame in 2022 and finished fourth on the team in tackles with 48.  Brown’s experience will at least aid Notre Dame in what happens at safety in 2023 after [autotag]Brandon Joseph[/autotag] declared for the NFL draft and Houston Griffith used up his remaining eligibility.

Brown brings experience to the position which juniors [autotag]Xavier Watts[/autotag] and [autotag]Ramon Henderson[/autotag] will also return to play.  [autotag]Thomas Harper[/autotag] transferred in from Oklahoma State last week to join the group while [autotag]Justin Walters[/autotag] returns as a sophomore in 2023 after not playing a single snap there as a true freshman.  Freshmen [autotag]Ben Minich[/autotag] and [autotag]Adon Shuler[/autotag] are set to join the safety group this coming season as well.

Enjoy some of the best photos from Brown’s first five years at Notre Dame below!

Notre Dame safety is off to the NFL after just one season in South Bend

Good luck Brandon!

When [autotag]Northwestern[/autotag] safety [autotag]Brandon Joseph[/autotag] entered the transfer portal last season, [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] was viewed as a perfect fit for the former All-American. The marriage happened but it was a short one as today Joseph declared for the [autotag]NFL Draft[/autotag].

He did have one remaining season left to play, due to the extra year given out to players during the shortened COVID-19 season, but Joseph will now move on to the NFL.

During his lone season for the Irish, he had 30 tackles, one interception, and forced a fumble. Joseph also returned 18 punts for 179 yards with a long of 20 on the season.

At the beginning of the season, Joseph was viewed as a potential first round selection. It really is unknown where he will land at this point in time, but wherever he ends up, that team will be extremely happy with the player they are getting. We wish Joseph the best in “The League.”

Should Notre Dame pursue Texas quarterback in portal?

Should Notre Dame be looking to the Longhorn state for help at quarterback next year? Thanks to @jhickey24 & @longhornswire for the scouting report!

College football’s postseason and offseason are so different now than they were just a few short years ago. One reason is the transfer portal. Welcome to recruiting on steroids that moves at the pace of a Formula 1 car instead of a big semi. Thanks to the portal, teams can freely recruit players from other schools to fill positions of need.

Notre Dame hasn’t had a huge number of players enter via the portal, but some select difference-makers certainly have. [autotag]Ben Skowronek[/autotag] led the team in receiving yards in 2020 after transferring from Northwestern. [autotag]Jack Coan[/autotag] went 11-1 as the starting quarterback in the 2021 regular season after being passed over at Wisconsin due to injury. And this season another former Northwestern star, safety [autotag]Brandon Joseph[/autotag], made the biggest impact as a transfer.

We don’t expect Notre Dame to be bring in loads of new faces as did USC, LSU and others did via the portal last offseason, but we do expect them to search for a veteran quarterback. [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag]’s limited ceiling, [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag]’s never-ending injury concerns and the lack of experience on the rest of the depth chart tells you exactly why it makes sense.

So with that in mind, we’re taking a look at potential quarterbacks for Notre Dame to land via the portal. What is their backstory? Why are they leaving their schools? What is their potential as collegiate starter in 2022? We’re seeking out the help of our experts with connections to other programs in doing so.

Texas quarterback [autotag]Hudson Card[/autotag] announced Tuesday that he’ll enter the portal. Could the former Longhorns starter be a fit for Notre Dame? Here’s how our colleague, Joey Hickey at Longhorns Wire breaks down Card.
