Ohio State picks up crystal ball prediction for the nation’s top wide receiver

Could Ohio State be closing in on the nation’s top wide receiver?

After watching both Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson go in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft, it is a great recruiting tool for head coach Ryan Day.

In the next draft, the team is also expected to see Jaxson Smith-Njigba go relatively early on in the draft. He will likely battle it out with Pittsburgh’s Jordan Addison and LSU’s Kayshon Boutte for the distinction of WR1.

Day and the Ohio State staff could be using that pitch for the top wide receiver in the 2023 cycle. Former Oklahoma commit Brandon Inniss received his first crystal ball prediction to the Buckeyes when most have him projected to the USC Trojans and Lincoln Riley.

247Sports director of football recruiting Steve Wiltfong submitted the projection on Tuesday.

Still, a long way to go until the early signing period in December, but players such as the wide receivers and new quarterback Devin Brown could help their efforts. Currently, the Buckeyes have the No. 6 overall class according to the composite team rankings from 247Sports.

Inniss would be the second wide receiver to commit to the class, should he make that decision. Fellow Florida wide receiver Bryson Rodgers committed to the 2023 class on Apr. 17.

The Buckeyes also picked up another crystal ball prediction for Austin Siereveld, who is slated to announce his commitment on Wednesday. He is down to Ohio State, the Alabama Crimson Tide, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Nation’s top 2023 receiver set to visit Florida football in March

The Gators get a visit from one of the top-10 overall athletes in the nation next month.

The recruiting period for the 2022 class has passed but Billy Napier and his army of staff have already moved on to the 2023 brood as the new head coach looks to restore the Orange and Blue to its previous glory. Among those Florida football is persuing for its next generation of Gator gridiron warriors is 247Sports’ top wide receiver prospect in the nation, Brandon Inniss from American Heritage in Plantation, Florida.

The in-state offensive target announced his plans to visit Gainesville on Twitter Wednesday, setting the date for March 6. He also noted that he intends to also visit the Ohio State Buckeyes on April 2 in an earlier tweet.

Inniss was initially committed to the Oklahoma Sooners but backed off after Lincoln Riley stepped down as head coach, re-opening his recruitment to all potential suitors. The 6-foot, 190-pound Floridian currently owns a five-star rating from 247Sports Composite and a four-star rating from the On3 Consensus. The former lists him as the top receiver in the nation while also holding the overall No. 3 spot in Florida and No. 8 in the nation.

According to 247Sports, Inniss has received offers from 37 total programs so far, but only Ohio State, Miami Hurricanes, Alabama Crimson Tide and USC Trojans are considered “warm” for his services. According to On3, the Sooners still lead the race for Inniss, though it lists wide receivers coach Dennis Simmons — who followed Riley out west — as the primary recruiter for both Oklahoma and USC, suggesting that the Okies might not be in as strong a position as indicated. Florida, however, is included among On3’s remaining top-five suitors along with OSU, Miami, USC and Alabama.

Landing Inniss would be a massive coup for the Gators not just from the standpoint of improving its wide receiver corps but also taking advantage of the massive talent pool that is available in their own backyard.

Nation’s No. 1 receiver set to visit Ohio State in April

Five-star receiver Brandon Inniss will visit Columbus and Brian Hartline looks to snag another top-rated receiver. #GoBucks

Well, would you look at that … Brian Hartline is at it again. Brandon Inniss, the No. 1 receiver in the 2023 class is set to visit Ohio State in early April.

The five-star receiver took a visit to OSU last year in June but later committed to Oklahoma. That changed when Lincoln Riley stepped away from the Sooners and headed west to coach USC. Inniss promptly decommitted from OU and reopened his recruitment.

The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native is ranked as the No. 8 overall player in the country according to the 247Sports composite. Hartline has been in contact with Inniss since he was in the eighth grade where he apparently already looked like a grown man. It’s been reported several college coaches mistook the middle school student for a high school senior.

Obviously, this would be another big win if the Buckeyes can snag Inniss. Recruiting analysts on 247Sports say it all with this evaluation; “One of the most college-ready wide receivers to come out of the high school ranks in recent years.”

We’ll see if  Hartline can work his magic yet again and add to what is already the most talented group of receivers in the nation.

A commit from four-star QB Jackson Arnold may get the Sooners rolling for their 2023 recruiting efforts

Oklahoma received multiple predictions saying OU will land a commitment from 2023 four-star quarterback Jackson Arnold.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbz7cqqgxy50qwt player_id=none image=https://soonerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Oklahoma has finally gotten the much-needed stabilization they needed following the upheaval that occurred at the core of their program when Lincoln Riley left following their loss to their in-state rivals in Oklahoma State.

Initially, the most important focus outside of getting a new head coach and a new staff in place was that of securing their 2022 recruiting class. Some commits left and didn’t come back while others left and came back. Some of their 2022 commits never wavered and remained committed.

The 2023 class was not nearly as forgiving. At the time, the Sooners boasted the nation’s number one class for 2023 led by a slew of talented offensive playmakers. Malachi Nelson, Brandon Inniss, Makai Lemon, Treyaun Webb, and Luke Hasz all were in the boat so to speak.

Recruited by Lincoln Riley, these 2023 recruits decommitted when news of Riley’s departure and eventual hiring at USC went final. Some like Nelson and Lemon followed him to USC. The rest are still going through the recruiting process looking for new homes.

Oklahoma has reset their 2023 board under Brent Venables and his coordinators in Jeff Lebby (offense) and Ted Roof (defense). Plus, the rest of the coaching staff have begun attacking the recruiting trail swiftly.

The centerpiece for almost every college football recruiting class is the quarterback. The Sooners plan to cast a wider net for quarterbacks than they ever did under Riley’s guidance. Riley would hone in on one or two quarterbacks, find his quarterback and that would be it.

He would also recruit quarterbacks every other year as opposed to taking one every year. Lebby doesn’t plan to do that as he already has signed a 2022 quarterback named Nick Evers and is hot on the trail for his first 2023 commit and quarterback in four-star Jackson Arnold.

Arnold received two predictions in favor of the Sooners recently with one being from the national director of football recruiting for 247Sports in Steve Wiltfong. On top of that, the prediction is a 7/10, indicating Wiltfong feels pretty strongly that Arnold and the Sooners have a strong relationship and that a commitment seems all but a formality.

It’s a massive deal for the Sooners for a myriad of reasons. The most important one is this: The Sooners need to start their 2023 recruiting under Brent Venables with a bang. They need to show the rest of the college football world that the show doesn’t stop because Riley isn’t here. A top-50 recruit being the Sooners’ first commit of the new era of Sooners football would galvanize the class and get the momentum rolling for them to get back into the top 10 of recruiting rankings.

A top-50 recruit that happens to be a quarterback? Well, that’s just even sweeter. Classes are way easier to build around when you have a quarterback to help you recruit. Players always flock to the quarterbacks because of the natural leadership position they are put in. Arnold is a Texas kid and could lend a major hand in helping some of the Sooners’ targets who are also from the state of Texas in hopping on board too.

There’s a major domino effect waiting to happen if somehow the Sooners can get a commitment from Arnold. Sometimes all recruits need is a reason to believe and a commitment could show them that they too could be in good hands if they commit to Oklahoma under this staff.

There’s no timetable for Arnold’s decision but with multiple 247Sports crystal balls and Rivals FutureCasts in for him already, it’s very obvious Oklahoma is putting itself in a prime spot.

Sooners offer 2023 WR Edward Schultz as Sooners slowly shift their offensive recruiting efforts to 2023

Edward Schultz of California receives an offer from Cale Gundy and DeMarco Murray.

While the Sooners coaching staff has a few more 2022 recruits they are hoping to add, they have already taken the time to start getting serious about the 2023 class. A recruiting class that was No. 1 in the country has seen a massive exodus in the last couple of weeks since Lincoln Riley’s exit.

Malachi Nelson (consensus top-10 player), Makai Lemon, Brandon Inniss, Trayaun Webb and Luke Hasz decommitted while Oklahoma was shopping for its next head coach. Lemon, rated by 247Sports as the number two athlete in the country and a five-star prospect, flipped his commitment to USC along with teammate and best friend Nelson after Riley became the head coach of the Trojans. Inniss, Webb and Hasz remain uncommitted as of now.

So what did the Sooners go and do? They went back to California, of course, for another wide receiver, extending an offer to Edward Schultz of J Serra Catholic. Schultz is currently unranked on 247Sports, but with Cale Gundy and DeMarco Murray as his recruiters, it’s a fair bet to suggest those eyes trust what they see.

Schultz touts offers from Florida State and San Jose State as well. He plays in a highly competitive California high school league and even returned a 91-yard kickoff for a touchdown against national power Mater Dei.

There’s a mighty long way to go from the early signing period in 2021 to national signing day in 2023. An entire spring, summer and senior season will allow players to rise and fall through the rankings. For now, we’re sitting back and watching these offers go out and will react and respond accordingly.

Recruiting roundup: Checking out the 2022 recruiting class and other notes

Where do the Oklahoma Sooners stand with certain players in the 2022 recruiting class?

The Oklahoma Sooners are riding a lot of momentum as the calendar has flipped to November. They are undefeated, ranked in the top eight of every major ranking, and can currently boast a top 10 recruiting class.

While the on-field product has been good and still has the potential to be great this season, great programs don’t just neglect the other part of the team. Recruiting is the lifeblood of college sports. Especially college football despite what Florida head coach Dan Mullen might suggest.

It’s a 365 days a year job and it never stops.

Despite some hiccups, the Sooners are closing in on another top 10 class for the 2022 recruiting cycle. We would seriously be talking about a top 3 class had they not lost a top 10 national recruit in Luther Burden earlier this year. They also lost Jordan Hudson and Talyn Shettron as well.

However, the Sooners picked up the slack in terms of sheer star power and talent by their October run landing two of this senior’s class best talents in Gabriel Brownlow Dindy and Gentry Williams according to the USA Today Sports High School Composite Player Rankings.

With an early signing day of December 15th, the Oklahoma Sooners can put pen to paper and close the deal for good by having many guys sign and send in their National Letters of Intent.

As it currently stands, Oklahoma’s well on its way to locking down their 2022 class as no one currently looks like a surprise flip to somewhere else at the moment with a month to go.

However, there are a few recruits who could still jump on board namely guys like Jovontae Barnes, Hero Kanu, Marvin Jones Jr., Azareyeh Thomas, and Chris McClellan.

Jovontae Barnes, a running back from Las Vegas is set to visit Oklahoma for the Iowa State game. He plans to silently commit and announce his decision at one of the winter All-Star games in January. The Sooners are in an excellent spot here if you’ve followed our coverage over the months.

Hero Kanu, a defensive lineman originally from Germany, but playing football in California, is another huge possibility for the Sooners here. Judging things right now, this seems like it may be down to Oklahoma and Ohio State, which may be a theme for Oklahoma over the next few months on the recruiting trail.

Marvin Jones Jr. plays with 2023 Sooners commit Brandon Inniss. The chance is there for them to play in college as well. Jamar Cain is on the prowl and is positioning Oklahoma to be right in the thick of it over the coming months in a battle with Alabama and Florida State for the highly talented edge rusher.

Azareyeh Thomas popped onto the scene after a visit a few weeks ago and Oklahoma is trending well enough to have garnered multiple crystal ball predictions on 247’s site. Thomas is listed as an athlete but looks to be playing safety if he plays for the Sooners.

Most, if not all of these guys will be names to monitor in the coming months as letters of intent begin to get signed and as players end their high school seasons, allowing them to focus solely on their recruiting journeys as their senior football seasons come to an end.

Official and Unofficial visitors coming to Norman for Oklahoma’s Big 12 Opener vs. WVU

Oklahoma is set to host several players for official and unofficial visits for this weekends prime-time matchup with West Virginia

Opening their conference slate on what should be a nice evening could not work out any better for the Oklahoma Sooners. They will have a lot of the nation watching, another sellout atmosphere, and some very high-profile recruits in town that they should be ecstatic to host. Let’s take a look at some of the players slated to take official and unofficial visits to Norman this weekend.

Official visits:

Unofficial visits:

As it stands at the time of this post, this group of visitors is loaded. There’s a nice blend of commits and uncommitted guys. Those who have already committed can work on the uncommitted athletes and convince them to come to Oklahoma. It’s a perfect situation for Oklahoma.

NOTES:

In-state star Chris McLellan out of Owasso, Oklahoma, is a priority for Oklahoma. They’ll be trying to restock their defensive line cupboard with the likely departure of multiple guys to the NFL or graduation this winter. Currently, Oklahoma is competing with Florida, Ohio State, and Alabama the most for his services.

Marvin Jones Jr will be on his official visit. He plays at American Heritage which is the same school as Sooners 2023 commit Brandon Inniss. The Sooners have an excellent little connection with this school currently will look to stand out with a great official and hope Brandon can keep the pressure on him at school.

The biggest fish that will be in town is that of Lebbeus Overton. Overton is the number two player in the country in 247Sports composite rankings and the number one recruit by 247Sports. He’s a Sooner legacy as his father (Milton Overton) played offensive line at Oklahoma from 1991-1994. Oklahoma was rumored to be out of the race for Overton. However, a trip to the Champ U BBQ and an unofficial visit this weekend indicates communication between the two sides has picked back up. Oklahoma could really make some noise here. Ultimately, they need to have him back for an official.

With only one offensive lineman committed for the 2023 class, Oklahoma will likely start building on both sides of the line for that class. Guys like Harris Sewell have an offer from the Sooners and are very much on Oklahoma’s radar.

Stay tuned throughout the week as we update the list with more information on who is and is not visiting this Saturday against West Virginia.

What are the Oklahoma Sooners getting in 5-star wide receiver Brandon Inniss?

The Oklahoma Sooners landed another big-time commitment for the 2023 recruiting cycle, but what are they getting in 5-star WR Brandon Inniss

After a relatively tumultuous few months with wide receiver recruiting for the 2022 class, Lincoln Riley and the Oklahoma staff have not let it affect their efforts in recruiting receivers for the 2023 class.

Brandon Inniss, a wide receiver out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, announced Sunday he would be joining the Sooners 2023 recruiting class as he verbally committed with friends and family looking on.

Rated as the number one wide receiver in the country on 247Sports and a top 20 prospect per ESPN, Inniss is a major get for the Sooners.

What exactly are the Sooners getting in their newest commit?

When looking at Inniss’ high school performance, the first thing that stands out is his physicality. He’s hard to bring down on first contact and is constantly fighting for the extra yards. Multiple three to five-yard hitches became 15-yard gains because of how physical and shifty Inniss is after the catch.

He shows the ability to get behind the defense with ease and has sure hands at such a young age. The young receiver will go up and over defenders in traffic to make a play.

In Riley’s offense, that’s a plus as Riley loves calling goal-line and slot fades to smaller but still athletic guys.

Inniss will get better at blocking the older and more physically mature he gets. He wants to block, and he puts effort into it, which is a coach’s dream.

The rest will come with more repetitions and more physical maturity. He catches screens and slants from the slot and can take the top off of a defense from the outside via vertical routes and deep crossing patterns.

Lincoln Riley covets versatility from his receivers, and Inniss’ ability to play inside and outside should serve him well as he looks to get on the field early for playing time.  Inniss can threaten teams vertically, attack the ball in the air, and is a threat to take a slant or screen and turn it into big yards after the catch. He’s a threat to score from anywhere on the field.

Simply put, he’s a dynamic wide receiver, and he knows it.

5-Star, number 1 wide receiver in 2023 commits to the Oklahoma Sooners

The Oklahoma Sooners landed another big-time prospect to the 2023 recruiting class with the commitment from top wide receiver Brandon Inniss.

The Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver group has taken a hit this Summer with Jordan Hudson (SMU) and Talyn Shetron (Oklahoma State) already finding new homes and Luther Burden looking for a new landing spot. While the losses are significant for the 2022 recruiting cycle, the Sooners have had an incredible run with the 2023 class.

They’ve already landed five recruits for 2023 and today got another big-time commitment from 5-star wide receiver Brandon Inniss.

Inniss chose the Oklahoma Sooners over Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, and Miami and adds to a 2023 recruiting class that’s already the number one group with a year and a half until national signing day.

Joining a group that already includes Malachi Nelson, Treyaun Webb, Makai Lemon, Luke Hasz, and Joshua Bates, the offensive side of the ball continues to pick up steam for 2023 with the commitment of Inniss.

With the commitment, the Sooners continue to bolster their class for the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Andrew Ivins, a Southeast Recruiting Analyst for 247Sports, had this to say about Inniss:

Promising build for a young receiver. A two-year contributor at the varsity level that is known for his big-play ability. Understands the importance of setting up and selling routes. Mixes gears well. Attacks the ball in the air and often times becomes a bigger target for quarterbacks than his size would initially suggest. Might lack a true top gear, but plays fast in pads and can get behind a defense. Has run in the 4.6s on the lasers in the 40-yard dash. Fluid when it comes to changing directions. Good in the open field after a catch. Getting better at breaking tackles. Willing blocker, although that’s an area of his game he can also keep improving. The type of prospect that many college coaches have already circled as a priority for them in South Florida. Should develop into a multi-year starter at a Top 25 program level given skillset and athletic profile. Has a chance to eventually play on Sundays. – Ivins

Inniss announced via his Twitter account today that he plans to make his commitment decision known on Aug. 22 on CBS.

Sooners among top 5 for 2023’s No. 1 wide receiver, sets decision date

The top wide receiver in the 2023 recruiting cycle narrowed his list to five and set a commitment date for Aug. 22.

The Oklahoma Sooners have had a huge 2023 recruiting cycle, landing Malachi Nelson, Treyaun Webb, Makai Lemon and Luke Hasz.

They’re the favorites to get a commitment from 2023 athlete DeAndre Moore who just joined Nelson and Lemon at Los Alamitos High School in California. According to 247Sports crystal ball, the Sooners also have the inside track at landing 2023’s No. 1 wide receiver, Brandon Inniss, out of Florida.

Already with the No. 1 recruiting class early in the 2023 cycle, Lincoln Riley and the Sooners continue swinging for the fences to put a strong lineup around 2023’s No. 2 quarterback Malachi Nelson.

If the Sooners land Inniss, it would set the stage for an all-time recruiting class for the University of Oklahoma and easily be Riley’s best.

Andrew Ivins, a Southeast Recruiting Analyst for 247Sports, had this to say about Inniss:

Promising build for a young receiver. A two-year contributor at the varsity level that is known for his big-play ability. Understands the importance of setting up and selling routes.
