Northwestern’s Chris Collins had a beautiful message for star Boo Buie after his final college game

What a heartwarming moment for Northwestern.

There is a cruel but inevitable reality to March Madness: only one team gets to cut the nets.

And only one team gets to really celebrate with its seniors. But this didn’t stop Northwestern’s Chris Collins from honoring one of the more important players in the history of the men’s program in the best way.

As No. 1 Uconn capped off a cruising second-round win over the Wildcats, Collins subbed out star Boo Buie with the intention of giving him a well-deserved curtain call in his last college game. And when Buie met Collins on the sideline, the Northwestern coach shared a heartfelt message about everything they’d been through together:

That is what it’s all about. Finding moments of joy and celebration, even when you’re not the last team standing.

Rutgers men’s basketball vs Northwestern: Prediction, point spread, odds, best bet

The Scarlet Knights are off to a 3-0 start this month and have a chance to add another conference win to their resume.

After an impressive win over Wisconsin on February 10, Rutgers men’s basketball is back in action on Thursday night against Northwestern. The Scarlet Knights are off to a 3-0 start this month and have a chance to add another conference win to their resume.

However, they have a challenging task ahead in a Northwestern team that has been one of the best in the Big Ten. Unlike Rutgers, they have performed well in conference play all season with an 8-5 mark. As Northwestern looks to continue its success, it will rely heavily on Boo Buie.

The Northwestern star is coming off another productive performance. Against Penn State on February 11, he scored 15 points and added six assists to his resume. He also got some help from Ryan Langborg, who scored 14 points.

As Northwestern looks to increase its winning streak to three games, they will be tasked with stopping Noah Fernandes. In Rutgers’ win over Wisconsin he scored 17 points.

Four in a row? Rutgers men’s basketball looks to continue hot streak

Rutgers men’s basketball is looking to continue their winning ways.

Through the first few weeks of February, Rutgers men’s basketball has been unbeatable. On Thursday, they will put their three-game winning streak on the line when they face Northwestern. Following their best win of the season, Rutgers will look to prove that their recent success is no fluke.

As Rutgers has started to climb up the Big Ten, Standings Jeremiah Williams has been critical to their success. Since the Chicago native made his season debut on February 3, Rutgers is undefeated with Williams having scored 42 points during this stretch.

Rutgers is now 13-10 (5-7 Big Ten).

While Rutgers has looked like a different team lately, they have a challenging task ahead in Northwestern. The Wildcats have won two straight games and entered play on Wednesday with a 17-7 record.

In this matchup, the Wildcats will need a big game from Boo Buie. The Albany, New York native is averaging a team-high 18.8 points per game. He has also gotten some help from Brooks Barhizer, who is averaging 14.5 points and a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game.

As long as Rutgers keeps Northwestern’s talented duo in check, they have a good chance of winning this game. Another Big Ten win would be huge, as Iowa, Iowa State, and Penn State all have six conference wins this season. Rutgers trails them by one game with five.

Northwestern star guard Boo Buie announces return to Wildcats

The Northwestern Men’s Basketball team got a big boost to their 2023-24 roster on Monday.

Northwestern star guard Boo Buie has withdrawn his name from the NBA Draft and is returning to Evanston. The Albany, New York, native announced his decision Monday on Twitter.

Buie, a First-Team All-Big Ten selection this past season averaged 17.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 4.5 assists for the Wildcats while shooting 40.6% from the floor. With his phenomenal season, the Wildcats were able to go 22-12 including 12-8 in conference play, leading to the Wildcats second ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

Next season will be Buie’s fifth with Northwestern. After signing with the Wildcats originally as part of their 2019 recruiting class out of Gould Academy School in Bethel, Maine. In each of his four seasons thus far, Buie has averaged 10+ points including 14.1 in 2021-22 and his career-high 17.3 this past season.

Not only has he been a force offensively but he’s also been a quality player defensively for the Wildcats, improving his defensive efforts each season. This past season, Buie averaged 1.1 steals per game while posting a defensive rating of 101.2, the best of his career.

Buie returning will mean the Wildcats return at least one of their two top scorers from last season. Fellow guard Chase Audige also declared for the NBA Draft this offseason. Audige averaged 14.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists over this past season. He’ll have until June 1 to withdraw from the draft.

Entering play on Sunday, the Scarlet Knights have posted a 2-5 record in their past seven games. However, they will have a shot at redemption against Northwestern.

The game starts at 7:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on the Big Ten Network.

Penn State stuns Northwestern at the buzzer in overtime

Penn State picked up a much-needed win on the road in exhilarating fashion at Northwestern

It is now March. It’s time for the best basketball of the season to be played right now.

After Penn State’s heartbreaking collapse at home on Sunday versus Rutgers, it seemed like their NCAA Tournament hopes were all but over. Coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] stressed after the game that he had confidence in his team to be able to respond on the road against Northwestern in their Senior Night game.

That was a high vote of confidence considering Penn State’s road struggles this season and Northwestern’s success at home with only four prior losses.

Shrewsberry was right. His team responded and pulled off a huge road upset in overtime.

Senior guard [autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] was sensational. He scored a game-high 24 points with four threes. His most important one of the night came at the buzzer in overtime.

[autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] missed a fadeaway with eight seconds left. Freshman forward [autotag]Evan Mahaffey[/autotag] outhustled three Wildcats and corralled the offensive rebound. He then threw a pass back to [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag] who found Wynter in the corner for an open three.

Dagger. Game winner.

It wasn’t easy for the Nittany Lions. They started the game slow, scoring five points in the first eight minutes of the game. With over seven minutes left in the first half they were in a 10-point hole.

The offense eventually came late in the half. They scored 14 points in the last five and a half minutes to go into the locker room down four.

Two minutes into the second half, Penn State took their first lead of the game since it was 5-3 in the opening minutes. After that, this game was a dogfight.

It felt like Northwestern was going to pull away at any point. The patented home Big Ten team run was right around the corner. But every time they started to pull away, a Penn State player would hit a big shot to keep them in the game.

There were three ties and five lead changes in the second half, including the last minute being tied at 61.

Right at the end of regulation Funk had a wide-open look to win it at the buzzer, but the three rimmed out.

After the poor shooting from seniors Funk and [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] on Sunday, they responded with big-time shots on the road. Each player hit four threes and combined to go 8-18 from deep. Funk finished with 17 points and eight big rebounds. Lundy finished with 14 points and six rebounds of his own.

But it was Wynter time in this one. The senior guard has been on a tear lately, averaging 18ppg in his last four games. This was his most important game in a Penn State uniform, keeping their March Madness dreams alive.

Pickett had a quiet scoring night, but finished with 11 assists and set the Penn State all-time record for assists in a season. Northwestern senior guard [autotag]Boo Buie[/autotag] finished with 20 points. Sophomore guard [autotag]Brooks Barnhizer[/autotag] added 19 off the bench.

Penn State’s next game will be at Noon on Sunday against Maryland. This will be their Senior Night game where they honor the seniors in the program.

The game will air on Big Ten Network.

Wisconsin falls to Northwestern 54-52 on Sunday

The Badgers lost a close game to Northwestern on Sunday, falling short 54-52 in the contest.

The Badgers lost a close game to Northwestern on Sunday, falling short 54-52 in the contest. The loss was Wisconsin’s seventh in their last nine games and they were swept by the Wildcats in the two-game season series for the first time since 1996.

Wisconsin continued to struggle to produce on the offensive end, shooting 38 percent from the floor (19-50 FG), though they were able to compile nine three-pointers. Most of their production from deep came from freshman guard Connor Essegian, who registered 15 points (5-14 FG, 5-11 3Pt, 0-1 FT). In addition to Essegian’s offensive output, Chucky Hepburn scored a game-high 17 points (6-15 FG, 3-5 3Pt, 2-2 FT).

Outside of the two guards that combined for 32 points, the rest of the Badgers’ starting lineup struggled greatly Sunday. Tyler Wahl (5 points), Max Klesmit (6 points) and Steven Crowl (5 points) all made only two shots each in the loss.

On the opposite side, Boo Buie and Chase Audige combined to play 79 minutes, unsurprisingly leading the Wildcats in scoring. Buie pitched in 13 points (4-10 FG, 1-5 3Pt, 4-5 FT) including four clutch free throws in the final 31 seconds. Audige played all 40 minutes in the victory and scored 11 points (5-13 FG, 1-3 3Pt) while also recording seven rebounds, three assists and a block.

Overall, the game came down to the final few possessions and Wisconsin had consecutive offensive opportunities thwarted with Hepburn attacking the rim. The sophomore point guard got blocked at the rim and then left a mid-range fadeaway short on back-to-back offensive sets. Northwestern was able to control the final moments with Buie nailing home four straight attempts from the charity stripe.

The game came to an end on an intentionally missed free throw by Max Klesmit, which didn’t come without some sort of controversy. Two Wildcat players came down with the rebound at the same time, but the refs failed to make a travel call, which all of the Kohl Center was hoping for.

With the defeat, Wisconsin saw their season record sink even further to 13-9 and 5-7 within the Big Ten. The Badgers will look to right the ship when they return to action Wednesday on the road at Penn State (7:30 PM).

Northwestern continued their surprisingly successful campaign, improving to 16-7 on the year and 7-5 in conferences games. They’ll take on Ohio State (11-12) in Columbus on Thursday.

2 Northwestern basketball players engaged in hilariously painful friendly fire

Ouch!

These two Northwestern basketball players engaged in one of the most painful examples of friendly fire you could come up with.

During the Wildcats’ Monday night tilt with Wisconsin, Northwestern senior forward Robbie Beran had to contort his body a bit to snag a rebound. However, his foot flew in the air during the board attempt and landed right in the groin of his teammate, senior guard Boo Buie.

As you could imagine, getting a swift kick to the, erm, lower body is just not what anyone wants to experience during a basketball game, particularly when it comes from a teammate.

Ouch. We’re sure that Beran and Buie will be laughing about this later, but in the moment, it’s not the kind of encounter you want to have with your fellow Wildcat.

Northwestern edged Wisconsin during the contest, 66-63. That’s likely to take out some of the sting of Buie’s injury … well, y’know, as much as it can.

A look at the Big Ten basketball assists leaders in 2020-2021

This article will look at the Big Ten Conference season leaders in assists, who are some of the best players in not only the Big Ten this…

As the 2020-21 men’s basketball season is nearing its end, we begin to look back at the Big Ten Conference and the great individual performances from this season.

Despite a senior season that had its fair share of difficulties, Wisconsin guard D’Mitrik Trice was able to make the top 10 among very impressive players such as Illinois guard Ayo Dosunmu, Michigan guard Mike Smith and Iowa guard Jodan Bohannon. These players have been the most dominant at their position this season, and it is no surprise to see them leading the Big Ten in such an important category that shows their ability to create plays for their team in addition to their electric scoring.

It will be interesting to see how the Badgers will attempt to replace the playmaking ability of D’Mtrik Trice at the point guard position going into next year, especially with the entrance of backup point guard Trevor Anderson into the transfer portal.

Below are the top 10 leaders in assists from the Big Ten Conference 2020-21 season. Players from Wisconsin, Iowa, Penn State, Northwestern, Michigan, Ohio State and Minnesota have all made the list.
