Big Ten notebook: Illinois extends March Madness run, Michigan State falls to North Carolina

Updating how the Big Ten has looked in the NCAA Tournament.

On Saturday, the Big Ten had an uneven day in March Madness. Michigan State and Illinois were in action, but only Illinois won. Entering play on Sunday, three teams in the conference still have a shot at a national title.

After pulling off an upset against Mississippi State in the first round, Michigan State could not replicate its success. They took on No.1 North Carolina and did not take care of the basketball. In an 85-69 loss, the Spartans lost the turnover battle 11-5 and were outrebounded 37-32.

While Michigan’s season came to a disappointing end, there were a few bright spots, including Tyson Walker. The Westbury native scored a team-high 24 points, finishing the tournament with 43 total points.

Following their elimination, No.3 Illinois gave Big Ten fans a reason to celebrate with an 89-63 win over No.11 Duquesne. The Fighting Illini built a large lead early on that they would not relinquish, which included a 50-point first half.

As the Big Ten champions punched their ticket to the Sweet Sixteen, they were led by Terrence Shannon Jr. The Chicago native added 30 points to his resume and was hard to stop, shooting 71.4 percent from the field. Through his first two games of the tournament, the talented guard has 56 points.

After a few days off, Illinois will be back in action on Thursday afternoon. They will take on No.2 Iowa State at TD Garden.

Michigan State basketball SG Tyson Walker named Second team All-Big Ten

Michigan State basketball shooting guard Tyson Walker had one of the best individual scoring seasons of the Tom Izzo era at MSU, and for his efforts, was named Second team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and media.

I will take a little umbrage to this selection, as Tyson was also on the second team last season, and this year, they actually expanded the first team to include six players, which was strange. The expanded first team included Jahmyr Young, Maryland’s excellent point guard. The issue I have with including Young over Walker is that their numbers are similar, but Maryland went 7-13 in the Big Ten and had a disappointing year (much more-so than MSU).

While it has been a bit of an up-and-down season for Tyson Walker, if you look at it as a whole, he is still having one of the best individual scoring seasons in recent Michigan State basketball history. Walker continue to gets recognition for his performance this year nationally, and on Tuesday, was named as one of five finalists for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award.

Walker is averaging 18 points per game this year and has scored in double figures in every single game.

3 good and 3 bad takeaways from Michigan State basketball’s loss to No. 2 Purdue

3 good and 3 bad takeaways from MSU’s loss to No. 2 Purdue

Michigan State has lost its third straight game on Saturday, dropping a matchup with No. 2 Purdue, 80-74, inside of Mackey Arena.

While the loss isn’t what any Spartan fan wanted, the team showed some really good things in this game, while also showing some inconsistencies that have killed this team all season long.

At the end of the day, it ends up being a loss for MSU, dropping the team to 17-12 (9-9 B1G) on the season. If there is any hope of keeping Tom Izzo and the school’s NCAA Tournament streak alive, there is work that desperately needs to be done.

Let’s take away at 3 good and 3 bad takeaways from MSU’s loss to Purdue:

WATCH: Tom Izzo, Juwan Howard, and Michigan State basketball players’ media sessions following MSU’s win over Michigan

On Saturday night, Michigan State basketball earned one of their most satisfying wins of the season, taking down their rival, Michigan, in Ann Arbor 73-63.

This was an important one for MSU for many reasons. This team now has won three conference road games, something that has been extremely hard for them, and many other teams, to come by this season.

It also featured another dominant performance from Malik Hall (18 points), who, along with Tyson Walker (19 points), led the Spartans in scoring. This has been extremely encouraging sign as Michigan State approaches March.

After the game, Tom Izzo, A.J. Hoggard, Tyson Walker and Malik Hall all spoke to the media, and you can find each of those interviews below, which were recorded and posted on YouTube by SpartanMag.com. Juwan Howard, Tarris Reed Jr. and Nimari Burnett also spoke to the media, and their session was recorded by UMHoops.com.

3 Takeaways from Michigan State basketball’s win at Penn State

3 Takeaways from Michigan State’s win at Penn State

Michigan State went on the road and got a huge victory over Penn State, taking down the Nittany Lions, 80-72.

While a convincing performance, you can tell Tom Izzo wasn’t entirely satisfied, but all in all, a win is a win and the Spartans made it relatively stress free for Spartan Nation.

The win also posed as a huge Q2 victory for MSU, further bolstering their NCAA Tournament resume, something that needs to continue to improve for the Spartans to feel good on selection Sunday.

Check out three takeaways from MSU’s big win:

Izzo: Michigan State basketball star Tyson Walker dealing with groin injury

Michigan State basketball star Tyson Walker dealing with groin injury

While he’s still been productive, Michigan State basketball star shooting guard Tyson Walker hasn’t quite been the same the last few weeks, and now we know why. According to Tom Izzo, Walker has been dealing with an injury of late.

While he didn’t give an exact time frame, this does fill in some blanks for what has been a dip in performance for the preseason All-American. Izzo did say that Walker isn’t expected to miss any time from the injury, playing through it to help the Spartans reach the NCAA Tournament.
