Here’s to 37

Thank you for being a bright spot of year 36 for me.

I was excited a few weeks back when key Notre Dame target [autotag]Justin Smith[/autotag] of Chicago announced he would be making his commitment on his birthday, January 31.  I thought it meant good things for Notre Dame but it also meant I had another birthday buddy out in this world.

Smith later came out and declared that he didn’t want to rush things and instead will be holding off on making a commitment to any school anytime soon.  Shucks, that would have been fun.  I do hope he’s enjoying his birthday despite it being literally -2 when I woke up this morning.

Anyway, 37 years ago today I came into the world on what was a pretty big week.

To review –

  • Sunday that week, the ’85 Bears put a bow on their season by roughing up the Patriots in one of the most lopsided Super Bowls to date.
  • Tuesday saw an American tragedy play out on live television as Space Shuttle Challenger blew up just after lifting off, killing all of the crew.
  • And I Friday I decided to show up a couple weeks early from when I was supposed to see the outside world.

If you’re doing the math at home that makes me 37.  In full disclosure, 36 brought one incredible joy as my son born this past summer.   The other positives of the past year could probably all be counted on one hand, however.

With that said, I just want to take a moment on my birthday to thank each of you for visiting this site and making it take off like you all have.  I’m excited for what’s to come with a few plans the team and I have come up with for this next year.

  • A podcast is in the works, recordings are in fact already taking place.  We’ll post it here for your consumption when we stack a few more episodes.
  • More in-person coverage at games is to come, something we’re all excited about.
  • And what about a Fighting Irish Wire tailgate before a Notre Dame home game this year – is that something you’d be interested in?

Thank you all for making this site work as it’s become more than just a hobby for me and instead a passion that I look forward to working on each day.  A big shoutout to my team of Jeff Feyerer, Geoffrey Clark, Michael Chen, and John Kennedy as well.  These guys make this site go with their ideas and passions and I can’t thank them enough (even if Mike is trying to pull a James Laurinaitis and head home to Buckeyes Wire).

Thank you all again as well and in my Mike Anello year (the greatest special teams player in Notre Dame history…I’m not kidding), I look forward to shaking down the thunder with all of you some more.

Photos: Danielle Kang through the years

The two-time U.S. Amateur Champion, six-time LPGA Tour winner and 2017 Women’s PGA Championship winner is celebrating a milestone.

Two-time U.S. Amateur Champion, six-time LPGA Tour winner and 2017 Women’s PGA Championship winner Danielle Kang turned 30 on October 20, 2022.

Kang’s rookie year on the LPGA Tour came in 2012 after gaining status through Q-School. After five seasons, Kang finally broke through in a big way when she won the 2017 Women’s PGA Championship.

Getting her first LPGA win and first major out of the way in one fell swoop, the floodgates seemingly opened for Kang. She won events in 2018, 2019 and 2020 — even taking home the Vare Trophy for lowest scoring average during the latter season.

After a title drought in 2021, Kang returned to her winning ways at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions.

Following the 2022 U.S. Women’s Open, Kang announced a hiatus from golf due to a tumor on her spine. Upon her return in August following treatment, Kang nearly won the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G.

Losing on the second playoff hole to Atthaya Thitikul, Kang left the tournament with tears of joy. After nearly losing the game she so loved, she competed with the world’s best.

Here’s to your thirties, DK!

WATCH: Alabama football team surprises Nick Saban with early birthday celebration

An early birthday celebration for the GOAT!

Alabama football has become synonymous with success. The program is the ‘Gold Standard’ in college football, and while the Crimson Tide strives for national championships, other teams just look to take down Alabama. At the helm of it all sits Nick Saban.

Saban’s birthday is just a few days away, on Oct. 31. The legendary head coach will be turning 70 years old, but still has plenty of gas left in the tank.

Today, the Crimson Tide football team surprised coach Saban when he waked into the team’s meeting room. There, the whole team was gathered, with sunglasses on and noisemakers filling the room. The team even sang him ‘Happy Birthday.’

Chiefs celebrating top 26 Patrick Mahomes moments on QBs 26th birthday

The #Chiefs are celebrating Patrick Mahomes’ top 26 “Mahoments” on his 26th birthday. Which moment is your favorite, #ChiefsKingdom?

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes turned 26 years old on Friday.

The phenom has accomplished more in his young career than some of the saltiest veterans to ever play in the league. He became the fastest player in NFL history to reach 10,000 passing yards, doing so after he’d already become league MVP, a Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl MVP. The kid has done some legendary things and all before he’s even entered the prime of his career.

In order to celebrate Mahomes’ 26th birthday, as well as the greatness that is Mahomes, the Chiefs’ social media team shared the top 26 moments of his NFL career so far. It includes in-game performances like his most recent comeback win against the Cleveland Browns. It also includes things that Mahomes has done off the field, like establishing the 15 and the Mahomies foundation.

Check it out:

It’s hard not to choose the Super Bowl LIV win against the San Francisco 49ers as Mahomes’ top moment with the team. Really, that entire playoff run should be in its own category of special moments. If I had to choose one moment that might be listed too high here, it’d be the no-look pass against the Ravens. It’s entirely understandable based on the insurmountable wave of hype that throw caused, but it feels like there could be other moments that take precedence.

Be sure to share your thoughts on this countdown of Mahomes’ top 26 moments with us on Facebook and Twitter. Did they leave any memorable moments out of the list? Do you agree with the top Mahomes moment?

Sixers star Ben Simmons buys his brother, Sean, a brand new car

Philadelphia 76ers guard Ben Simmons bought his brother a car for his birthday.

Family is always an important factor in anybody’s life. For Philadelphia 76ers star guard Ben Simmons, he showed his brother, Sean, just how much he means to him on his birthday on Tuesday as he gifted him with a big surprise for his special day.

Simmons was on Instagram live with his brother to wish him a happy birthday and everything that came with that and he then took the phone out to the garage. He then flipped the camera around to a new car and he told his brother that it was for him as his gift. His brother then broke down and cried happy tears in a wholesome moment.

At the end of the day, family is what will always be there for you. That is something that was really taught to everybody during the past year or so. It is nice to see Simmons gift his brother with something really cool and it’s clear that it meant a lot to Sean.

LOOK: Taysom Hill announces the birth of his son

New Orleans Saints quarterback Taysom Hill had a great explanation for missing two days of training camp practice: the birth of his son Beau

[jwplayer b7VcnCYu-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints were without Taysom Hill for two days of practice in training camp, and now we know why: Hill’s family just added one more. Hill and his wife Emily announced the birth of their son Beau Nixon Hill on Saturday in a post from the quarterback’s official Instagram account.

It’s the latest and biggest move for Hill’s household, following the one-year contract extension he signed earlier this summer. Hill, who will be celebrating his 30th birthday on Sunday, spent his offseason preparing to compete with Jameis Winston for the right to back up Drew Brees, and maybe set himself up to start under center as soon as 2021.

But asking whether Hill will be up to the task is a question for another day. For now, he’s focused on being a great father, and we’re certainly wishing the best to him and his young family.

Russell Wilson announces birth of son

There is a new addition to the Wilson family

July 23rd, 2020 is now a special day for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and his young family.

On Friday morning, Russell Wilson announced on his Twitter the birth of his son, Win Harrison Wilson, had happened the day prior. Wilson shared a photograph of himself, his wife Ciara, and their newborn child.

Wilson announced in January he and his wife were pregnant with another child to their family, and revealed in April the gender would be a boy.

Win Harrison Wilson is now the third child in the Wilson family.. Joining older brother Future Zahir, Ciara’s son with rapper Future, and older sister Sienna Wilson, who was born in 2017.

Of course, this is all in spite of Sienna’s best efforts to thwart having a younger sibling.

While 2020 has been a difficult year for many people, for the Wilson family there is now legitimate joy to be had. We at SeahawksWire wish Win a happy belated first birthday, as well as rest for his parents in the days to come.

Listen: Terron Armstead releases new single ‘My Zone’

New Orleans Saints left tackle Terron Armstead took a break from Pro Bowl trips and coaching clinics to record a fiery hip-hop single.

[jwplayer AqGdbp3Y-ThvAeFxT]

If this whole football thing doesn’t work out for two-time Pro Bowl left tackle Terron Armstead, then the New Orleans Saints’ blind side protector might have a future in music. Armstead celebrated his 29th birthday by announcing his first adventure into the world of hip-hop.

Armstead’s debut track is titled “My Zone,” which is available for streaming on Apple Music and iTunes. It does contain some coarse language, so be advised before blasting some tunes across your office.

It’s been an interesting offseason for Armstead. He’s taken an active interest in work off the practice field, speaking at an NFL offensive line clinic as one of its more experienced participants while funding the construction of community centers in his Cahokia, Ill. hometown and his new community in New Orleans, and somehow found time to indulge his other interests by spitting fire on a three-minute single. Good for him.
