Chiefs wish head coach Andy Reid a happy 66th birthday

The #Chiefs wished head coach Andy Reid a happy 66th birthday on Tuesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs made one of the most consequential moves in the franchise’s history by hiring veteran head coach Andy Reid in 2013.

Under his watch, Kansas City has grown into a perennial contender, and secured three Super Bowl victories over the last five years.

On Tuesday, Reid celebrated his 66th birthday, and the Chiefs took to Twitter to wish him well on his big day:

While Reid is among the oldest head coaches currently in the NFL ranks, his youthful demeanor and excitement on the sideline captivate audiences around the country every time he is shown on television broadcasts.

One of the most accomplished coaches in football, Reid has cemented his place in league history with the impressive run of success that Kansas City has accomplished in recent seasons.

Expect fans and commentators around the country to join the Chiefs in wishing the long-tenured skipper a happy birthday on Tuesday.

Chiefs fans wish star RB Isiah Pacheco a happy 25th birthday

#Chiefs fans wished RB Isiah Pacheco a happy 25th birthday on Saturday.

The Kansas City Chiefs leaned on running back Isiah Pacheco during their run to Super Bowl LVIII. His tenacity with the ball in his hands and ability to gain yards on tough runs has endeared him to fans in Western Missouri and helped him make a name for himself in the NFL.

Pacheco turned 25 on Saturday, just weeks after the Chiefs’ latest Super Bowl victory. His outstanding performance in the playoffs cemented Pacheco’s status as one of the league’s best rushers.

With plenty of time left in his career, it wouldn’t be a stretch to think that the Rutgers product could earn a place in Kansas City’s franchise record books over the next few seasons. The consistency he has brought to the Chiefs’ running game has been a boon for Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, who have been able to rely on Pacheco to pick up gritty yards on the ground to keep Kansas City’s offense balanced.

Users on Twitter helped Pacheco celebrate on Saturday by wishing him a happy birthday.

Chiefs OL Jawaan Taylor celebrates 26th birthday ahead of matchup vs. Raiders

#Chiefs OL Jawaan Taylor celebrated his 26th birthday ahead of Kansas City’s matchup against the #Raiders in Week 12.

Kansas City Chiefs tackle Jawaan Taylor was a key addition to the team’s offense in the offseason, and despite a rocky start to his 2023 campaign has managed to become a valuable asset for Patrick Mahomes in pass protection.

The fifth-year lineman celebrated his 26th birthday on Saturday as Kansas City looks ahead to its Week 12 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, and will hope to give himself another reason to celebrate with a Chiefs win on Sunday.

Taylor’s presence on Kansas City’s offensive front shouldn’t go underrated. Though he struggled with penalties earlier in the season, Taylor has proven to be a competent and capable competitor for the Chiefs through his first 10 games with the team, and with three years left on his contract after 2023, figures to be a key piece of Kansas City’s offense moving forward.

Expect Taylor to put together an excellent outing against the Raiders as he endeavors to help the Chiefs earn their eighth win of the season in Week 12.

Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend celebrates 27th birthday

#Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend celebrated his 27th birthday on Sunday, November 12.

The Kansas City Chiefs special teams unit has been one of the best in the NFL this season, and punter Tommy Townsend’s efforts to flip field position have played a large part in the squad’s success in 2023.

Townsend, now in his fourth year with the Chiefs, celebrated his 27th birthday on Sunday, marking yet another trip around the sun for the All-Pro punter.

A consistent presence for Kansas City on Sundays, Townsend has cemented himself as one of the league’s top punters in recent seasons and is known as one of the Chiefs’ most coveted assets on special teams.

In addition to his role as Kansas City’s punter, Townsend also serves as the team’s holder on field goals and has been stellar in his time helping Harrison Butker nail three-point tries since joining the Chiefs as Dustin Colquitt’s successor in 2020.

Though he won’t be on the field in Week 10 as Kansas City takes its bye, fans can expect to see Townsend back in action against the Philadelphia Eagles on November 20.

Matt LaFleur on releasing Jonathan Garvin on birthday: ‘This business never stops’

The Packers released Jonathan Garvin on his 24th birthday on Friday. Coach Matt LaFleur: “This business never stops.”

The Green Bay Packers released outside linebacker Jonathan Garvin on his 24th birthday on Friday. The transaction looked especially cruel after the social media team wished Garvin a happy birthday on social media a few hours before his release.

Coach Matt LaFleur bemoaned the timing but said the business of the NFL doesn’t stop, even for birthdays.

“Unfortunately, sometimes it’s time to move on,” LaFleur said before Saturday’s practice. “I understand the timing wasn’t great, in terms of it being his birthday. You guys know, this business never stops.”

Garvin, a 2020 seventh-round pick, was attempting to move from edge rusher to defensive line, likely in a last-ditch effort to maintain a roster spot. The Packers are deep at edge rusher in training camp, leaving little opportunity for Garvin to make the 53-man roster.

It’s clear the transition wasn’t going to plan. Could the Packers have waited until Saturday to make the move? Probably, but getting released was going to sting for Garvin regardless of whether the transaction arrived Friday or Saturday.

Garvin played in 38 games for the Packers over three seasons. He’ll have a chance to catch on with a new team relatively early in training camps across the league.

Garvin’s release opens a roster spot on the 90-man roster for the Packers, who didn’t immediately announce a new addition.

Packers release OLB Jonathan Garvin on his birthday

The Packers celebrated Jonathan Garvin’s birthday on social media Friday morning, and then released him a few hours later.

Roughly three hours after posting a tweet celebrating his birthday, the Green Bay Packers released fourth-year outside linebacker Jonathan Garvin before Friday’s practice, per Ryan Wood of PackersNews.com.

Garvin, a seventh-round pick of the Packers in 2020, turned 24 years old on Friday.

The business of football is a cold and cruel one.

Garvin played in 38 games for the Packers between the 2020 and 2022 seasons. He produced 32 tackles, 1.5 sacks and seven quarterback hits.

The Packers were working Garvin with the defensive linemen during the early parts of training camp, possibly in a last-ditch effort to find a place for him on the roster long-term.

The Packers are deep at outside linebacker behind starters Rashan Gary and Preston Smith, especially after retaining Justin Hollins and drafting Lukas Van Ness in the first round.

Chris Olave represents the Saints on PFF’s ‘top 25 under 25’ list

Chris Olave reps the Saints on this top 25 under 25 list from Pro Football Focus. The playmaker is younger than many of his rookie teammates:

Pro Football Focus analyst Trevor Sikkema highlighted the NFL’s top 25 players who have yet to celebrate their 25th birthday — and only one New Orleans Saints standout made the cut. Second-year wide receiver Chris Olave represented the Saints on Sikkema’s list, clocking in at No. 23. Here’s what Sikkema wrote of Olave:

“Olave finished his 2022 rookie campaign with an 82.9 receiving grade. He recorded 24 explosive plays of 20 yards or more, which was a top-10 mark among players under 25. His 14.9-yard average depth of target was one of the higher marks in the league, which showcases his deep-threat ability.”

The Saints will be leaning on Olave in a big way this year; it’s no sure thing that Michael Thomas will remain healthy often enough to lead the charge offensively with him, and Rashid Shaheed needs to show he can continue to produce on a heavier workload. Olave has already put in work with his new quarterback Derek Carr to prepare for an important season.

Olave just turned 23 years old a month ago on June 27, so he’s younger than many of his rookie teammates (including 24-year-old quarterback Jake Haener). He’s started his career strong and looks like a building-block for the Saints for years to come. It’s on him to keep up the momentum and meet that expectation.

Notre Dame great Rick Mirer through the years

Happy birthday to Notre Dame great, @rickmirer!

Before the game of football became as pass-heavy as it has, Rick Mirer was busy helping lead Notre Dame to three straight major bowl games in the early 90’s with both his arm and his legs.  Mirer won 29 games he starred for Lou Holtz and Notre Dame between 1990 and 1992 and his 18 touchdown passes in 1991 were a then-school record.

After leading Notre Dame Sugar Bowl and Cotton Bowl victories over Florida and Texas A&M respectively, Mirer was the second player to have his name called in the 1993 NFL draft.  That remains the highest a Notre Dame player has been taken in the NFL draft since, something Kyle Hamilton hopes to match next month.

Mirer never won a national title at Notre Dame but he was the star quarterback on some fantastic teams.  Celebrate his birthday, which he shares with other Irish greats Julian Love and Quenton Nelson, by taking a look at some of his best photos at Notre Dame.

Here’s to 37

Thank you for being a bright spot of year 36 for me.

I was excited a few weeks back when key Notre Dame target [autotag]Justin Smith[/autotag] of Chicago announced he would be making his commitment on his birthday, January 31.  I thought it meant good things for Notre Dame but it also meant I had another birthday buddy out in this world.

Smith later came out and declared that he didn’t want to rush things and instead will be holding off on making a commitment to any school anytime soon.  Shucks, that would have been fun.  I do hope he’s enjoying his birthday despite it being literally -2 when I woke up this morning.

Anyway, 37 years ago today I came into the world on what was a pretty big week.

To review –

  • Sunday that week, the ’85 Bears put a bow on their season by roughing up the Patriots in one of the most lopsided Super Bowls to date.
  • Tuesday saw an American tragedy play out on live television as Space Shuttle Challenger blew up just after lifting off, killing all of the crew.
  • And I Friday I decided to show up a couple weeks early from when I was supposed to see the outside world.

If you’re doing the math at home that makes me 37.  In full disclosure, 36 brought one incredible joy as my son born this past summer.   The other positives of the past year could probably all be counted on one hand, however.

With that said, I just want to take a moment on my birthday to thank each of you for visiting this site and making it take off like you all have.  I’m excited for what’s to come with a few plans the team and I have come up with for this next year.

  • A podcast is in the works, recordings are in fact already taking place.  We’ll post it here for your consumption when we stack a few more episodes.
  • More in-person coverage at games is to come, something we’re all excited about.
  • And what about a Fighting Irish Wire tailgate before a Notre Dame home game this year – is that something you’d be interested in?

Thank you all for making this site work as it’s become more than just a hobby for me and instead a passion that I look forward to working on each day.  A big shoutout to my team of Jeff Feyerer, Geoffrey Clark, Michael Chen, and John Kennedy as well.  These guys make this site go with their ideas and passions and I can’t thank them enough (even if Mike is trying to pull a James Laurinaitis and head home to Buckeyes Wire).

Thank you all again as well and in my Mike Anello year (the greatest special teams player in Notre Dame history…I’m not kidding), I look forward to shaking down the thunder with all of you some more.
