No. 17 Georgia edges No. 4 Clemson 15-inning marathon

Clemson Baseball: Fourth-ranked Tigers fall in 15-inning marathon at No. 17 Georgia.

ATHENS, GA. – Paul Toetz scored on a wild pitch with one out in the 15th inning in No. 17 Georgia’s 4-3 win over No. 4 Clemson at Foley Field on Tuesday night. In a game that lasted five hours and 30 minutes, the Bulldogs improved to 30-10, while the Tigers dropped to 32-8.

The Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the second inning on Toetz’s two-out single, then Blake Wright extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-out, two-run triple in the third inning. Cannarella led off the fourth inning with his seventh homer of the year.

In the seventh inning, Corey Collins hit a run-scoring single to cut Clemson’s lead in half, then Collins blooped a one-out single in the ninth inning to tie the score. Alden Mathes’ throw to the plate on the play retired Charlie Condon to extend the game.

In the 15th inning, the Bulldogs took advantage of two walks and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases with one out. Then an errant pitch allowed Toetz to score the walkoff run.

Chandler Marsh (1-0) earned the win, while Chance Fitzgerald (0-1) suffered the loss. Ten Tiger pitchers combined to allow just three earned runs and eight hits, all singles.

The Tigers travel to Louisville for a three-game series, beginning Friday at 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.

Clemson moves two spots in new USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll

Clemson Baseball: Here’s a look at where the Clemson Tigers are ranked in this week’s USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll for the week of April 22.

The Clemson Tigers are back on the move in the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll, released Monday, April 22.

The Tigers (32-7 overall, 13-5 ACC) moved up two spots to land at No. 6 in this week’s poll after a 3-1 week that included victories in non-conference play against Charlotte and Pitt in ACC action.

Coach Erik Bakich’s club also moved up one spot to No. 5 in this week’s D1Baseball poll and stayed at No. 4 in Baseball America’s Top 25 rankings.

The top three spots in the coaches poll remained the same as last week. Texas A&M (35-5 overall) remained No. 1 with Arkansas (34-6) at No. 2 and Tennessee (33-7) at No. 3.

After Clemson at No. 4, Kentucky (32-7) rounded out the top five.

Other ACC schools ranked in the top 10 of this week’s coaches poll were No. 6 Duke and No. 9 Florida State. The ACC had seven teams ranked in the Top 25, including No. 11 Wake Forest, No. 12 Virginia, No. 14 North Carolina, and No. 23 NC State.

Other big movers in the coaches poll were Coastal Carolina, which climbed five spots to No. 15, and Oklahoma, who jumped into the Top 25 to land at No. 18. The Sooners have won seven straight games after a weekend sweep of BYU.

Georgia (29-10) moved up six spots from last week to land at No. 17. The Tigers will travel to Athens for a midweek game against the Bulldogs on Tuesday. First pitch from Foley Field is scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT. The game will be televised on ESPNU.

Clemson vs. Georgia updated early betting lines 2024 opener

Another look at the early betting lines for Clemson vs. Georgia 2024.

In 2023, Dabo Swinney and the Clemson football team showed some promise, but fans wanted more from the Tigers as they failed to reach the ACC Championship game.

The season ended with a thrilling win over Kentucky in the Gator Bowl. It was an awesome game and excellent way for the Tigers to end their season. Still, the 9-4 overall record, including 4-4 in the ACC, left some fans feeling disappointed. Now, everyone’s looking forward to what Clemson will bring in 2024.

Their journey starts with a big game against Georgia. Even though it’s months away, people are already talking about the betting lines. Especially with the recent news regarding Georgia running back Trevor Etienne. Below, check out the early odds for the matchup.

Clemson vs. Georgia Week in Atlanta projected to host College GameDay

Clemson could be a participant in the first College GameDay of the 2024 season.

Dabo Swinney and his team, the Tigers, are starting the 2024 season with a big game against the Georgia Bulldogs. The game will be at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

This game is going to be exciting because Clemson is seen as the team that might not win. But don’t think they won’t put up a fight. In the past, Clemson has done well in tough situations like this. This game is a great chance for them to show what they can do and get back on track.

The Bulldogs also have a lot of pressure on them. With all the attention on both teams, this game could be really important for the rest of the season. The result could change how both teams do for the rest of the year.

According to 247Sports, this matchup is the most likely to host College GameDay in Week 1.

College GameDay stayed home for UNC vs. South Carolina in Charlotte during last season’s opening weekend, but expect considerably more fireworks this time around with this battle of top 10 teams. Is Clemson back? Will Georgia be the preseason No. 1? Some of that will be answered in Atlanta, which is essentially the Bulldogs’ home away from home. LSU vs. USC in Las Vegas and Notre Dame traveling Texas A&M are two other choices for opening weekend that would not disappoint.

This game headlines Week 1 and should be the host of College GamDay. LSU vs. USC might steal it, and possibly Notre Dame traveling to face Mike Elko and Texas A&M in Elko’s first game at the helm, but do either compare to Clemson vs. Georgia? I don’t think so.

We should see Clemson and Georgia be the headliner of Week 1, including a College GameDay tag to the matchup.

247Sports early Week 1 projections expect a close game between Clemson and Georgia

Clemson vs. Georgia might be the most highly anticipated game of Week 1 in 2024.

Dabo Swinney and his Tigers are diving headfirst into the 2024 season with a thrilling kickoff against the formidable Georgia Bulldogs at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

This clash sets the stage for an electrifying start to the season, with Clemson stepping into the ring as the perceived underdog. But don’t count them out just yet. Historically, the Tigers have thrived in this role, and this matchup presents a golden opportunity for them to carve out a statement win and regain their momentum.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs aren’t without their own pressures. With the spotlight firmly on both teams, this showdown could very well be a pivotal moment in the 2024 season, with the outcome potentially shaping the trajectory of each program moving forward.

Recently, 247Sports released early Week 1 projections, with expectations of a close game between Clemson and Georgia.

Early leanGeorgia 24, Clemson 17

These two elites played a defensive slugfest a couple years ago in Charlotte to open the season and we could see more of the same this time around given the ample prep time each coaching staff’s going to have for the other. Can Cade Klubnik be a difference-maker and get Dabo Swinney’s team back to respectability as an annual playoff contender? Will Georgia be looking to make a statement after seeing its two-year reign atop the sport end last fall? There’s a number of factors to watch in this one.

They’re certainly not wrong here; there are a number of factors to watch. For Clemson fans, most of them will naturally revolve around Garrett Riley, Cade Klubnik, and the Tigers’ offense.

Clemson’s offense has struggled since Trevor Lawrence’s departure, but the Tigers’ offense has the potential to be great. Expectations were high for Riley’s first year with the Tigers and Klubnik’s first year starting under center, and it’s safe to say there were letdowns. Patience can be difficult, especially in the modern age of college football.

Year 2 for both Riley and Klubnik could see this Clemson offense explode.

Georgia running back Trevor Etienne’s possible suspension could significantly impact Clemson vs. Georgia

Georgia could be without one of their top offensive weapons for their season opener against Clemson.

Former Clemson star running back Travis Etienne’s younger brother Trevor is a star in his own right, transferring to Georgia in the offseason to bolster the Bulldogs offense even further.

As many of you likely know by now, the Tigers face Georgia for their season opener and Etienne’s status for that is in question. Over the weekend, Etienne was arrested on DUI charges, with a possible suspension on the way. This could seriously impact the matchup between Clemson and the Bulldogs.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart touched on the situation during a press conference Tuesday.

“As we also know, sometimes kids don’t make the best decisions,” Smart said. “The older you get, sometimes the tougher the consequences are for your mistakes. So, he’s not going to let this mistake define him. He’s embarrassed. He’s upset. He knows he made a mistake. It’s a teaching moment, and we hope he gets better from it.”

If disciplinary actions are taken, Etienne could miss the entire game. Without one of their top offensive weapons, the Tigers’ chances naturally increase. This will be a situation to monitor closely.

ESPN tabs Clemson’s matchup against Georgia as their season defining game in 2024

Clemson’s matchup against Georgia to start their 2024 season is as big of a non-conference game as it gets.

Dabo Swinney and his Tigers kick off their 2024 season with a thrilling start, hitting the road to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Their Week 1 showdown awaits against the anticipated No. 1 squad in the nation, the Georgia Bulldogs.

This season opener sets the stage for an electrifying kickoff, with Clemson stepping onto the field as the underdog with much to prove. Yet, history shows the Tigers thrive in this role, and this game presents a prime opportunity for them to make a resounding statement and regain momentum.

With both teams feeling the weight of expectations, the matchup carries immense significance. For Georgia and Clemson alike, this clash could determine the trajectory of their 2024 seasons, making it a pivotal moment for both programs. According to ESPN, this matchup is the Tigers season-defining game.

Clemson’s three toughest games are likely all in the first five weeks, including the season opener against Georgia, a home date against NC State and a trip to Tallahassee. But if we’re forced to pick one, let’s put the spotlight on Georgia. Clemson’s three worst seasons during Swinney’s run of success at the school have come in 2014, 2021 and 2023. The common thread? The Tigers lost their opener in all three years, including two to the Bulldogs. Georgia won’t define the Tigers’ ACC or playoff hopes, but it will be the ultimate litmus test to decide if Clemson is capable of getting back to contending for a national title. — Hale

Clemson’s mission to reclaim its status among the nation’s elite teams hinges on revitalizing its offense. Reflecting on their previous clash in 2021, which ended in a low-scoring 10-3 defeat against UGA, underscores the pressing need for offensive improvement that is still relevant in 2024.

The Tigers’ absence of offensive touchdowns in their last encounter underscores ongoing challenges. Now, the spotlight is on second-year offensive coordinator Garrett Riley and sophomore quarterback Cade Klubnik to spark a turnaround. With the offense under scrutiny, the potential for an upset looms if Clemson can ignite its firepower from the outset.

Clemson vs. Georgia named one of college football’s top five non-conference games for the 2024 season

247Sports listed Clemson vs. Georgia as one of the five best non-conference games for the 2024 season.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers open their 2024 season with a bang as they travel to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, for a Week 1 matchup against the expected No. 1 team in the country, Georgia Bulldogs.

It’s a wild way to start the season, and Clemson will head into this matchup as the underdog. The Tigers, more often than not, excel in the underdog role, and it’s a big opportunity for the program to make a statement and get back on track.

Georgia themselves have a lot of pressure heading into that matchup, and it may very well be a make-or-break game for both programs in 2024. According to 247Sports, this matchup is one of the 5 best non-conference games for the 2024 season

The Chick-fil-A Kickoff in Atlanta is the setting for another exciting Week 1 matchup between two perennial powers in the ACC and SEC. The Tigers are looking to re-establish themselves as national powers, and who better to do it against than Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs? Georgia lost 20 players to the transfer portal this offseason and has a lot of roster shuffling to do before Week 1. Dabo Swinney’s squad will be looking to pounce.

It is all about Clemson re-establishing itself as one of the country’s top teams; for that to happen, things start with the offense. The last time these two teams played in 2021, the final score was 10-3, with UGA picking up the win. There wasn’t an offensive touchdown scored in the game!

The offensive woes for the Tigers haven’t faded since then, putting a lot on the shoulders of second-year offensive coordinator Garrett Riley and second-year starting quarterback Cade Klubnik. An upset is possible if this offense comes out firing on all cylinders.

Among the prospects on hand for last Saturday’s game between Clemson and Georgia was one of the nation’s best athletes in the 2024 class, who hails from the Peach State.

Grayson High School’s Joseph Stone, Jr. is being recruited by both programs. He’s an in-state target for the Bulldogs, but he also comes from the same high school that Clemson safeties coach Mickey Conn was the head coach at for 16 years.

Stone was at the Dabo Swinney camp earlier this summer and talked with The Clemson Insider about his experience, his close relationship with Conn and how Clemson is his “dream school.”

TCI caught back up with Stone following Week 1’s marquee matchup, which he was in attendance for in Charlotte. He had a great time and lauded the environment and effort from both schools.

“UGA came ready!! From the fans in the stands to the coaches and down to the players as well,” he said. It was a well-played game and an amazing environment. It felt as if the fans were ready to play and they had no doubt that they were going to take home a win. I really enjoyed my time.”

Still, Stone made sure to praise Clemson as well, a school where he has many relationships with players on the team, including Phil Mafah, Dacari Collins and Nate Wiggins.

“Clemson also came with it,” Stone added.  Fighting the whole game and not giving up. Loved watching my guys from Atlanta touch the field and be great as just freshmen. Definitely, something I’m looking forward to. Clemson is great and will be great for a long time and I believe Clemson is still a top-tier school.”

Stone’s praise for the Tigers didn’t stop there. He experienced the culture of the program first-hand this summer and made sure to touch on it again after seeing it as a spectator in the stands at Bank of America Stadium.

“Although Clemson is a very big school I feel as if it’s a place of opportunity and hard work for anyone who is willing to be ‘ALL IN.’ I feel like Clemson is a place where men actually become better men and you can see by the fight and personality of the players on the team.”

While Stone is only just a sophomore, it’s clear that he’s already caught the attention of several marquee programs around the country.

Clemson fell just short against Georgia in a stout defensive matchup that featured two top-5 teams at the Duke’s Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

After the game, The Clemson Insider reached out to a number of prospects, who were in attendance, to get their reactions from the game and their overall experience at such a marquee game. Check out what they had to say:

Oscar Delp, 2022 4-star TE, Cumming, GA. (West Forsyth High School): “The game was awesome I had a great time. I loved what both teams did with the TE.”

Andre Greene Jr., 2022 4-star WR, Richmond, Va. (St. Christopher’s School): “We had a great time at the game. It was definitely a defensive battle. I’m sure I’ll get to see more games during the season to get a better idea of how I would fit into their offense. It was the first game of the season with two excellent teams.

Kelby Collins, 2023 4-star DE, Gardendale, Ala. (Gardendale High): “It was a great experience, both fan bases are crazy.”

Christopher Vizzina, 2023 3-star QB, Birmingham, Ala. (Briarwood Christian): “I had a lot of fun. It was a defensive game for sure.”

Joshua Miller, 2023 3-star OL, Colonial Heights, Va. (Life Christian Academy): “It was a good time, I enjoyed the atmosphere. The energy was through the roof all night.”

Jayden Bradford, 2024 4-star QB, Chapin, S.C. (Chapin High School): “It was a great game to go to and watch the Clemson fans were very passionate throughout the game and I feel like if they had a little more time they could’ve pulled it out.”

Hevin Brown-Shuler, 2024 4-star DT, Atlanta, GA. (Pace Academy): “The game was electric. The fan base from both organizations is crazy. I expected for it to be a tight game especially having two young QB’s who by the way did well. Although I have an offer from UGA and often get checked on by Clemson, I never had an expectation on who would win, I just wanted to see a great competitive game in which I did witness.”

Kam Pringle, 2024 OT, Dorchester S.C. (Woodland): “It was definitely a great experience! Seeing all the live high-speed action and physicality of two great teams is definitely a crazy experience! Really enjoyed my time and met some other cool recruits!”
