CBS Sports writer picks Auburn to upset Georgia

The Tigers and Bulldogs face off in a top-10 matchup on Saturday in Sanford Stadium.

The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry is going to be a little weird with it being played in October instead of late in the season but the stakes are still high as No. 7 Auburn visits No. 4 Georgia in Athens on Saturday.

CBS Sports’ Barrett Sallee thinks an upset is brewing in Sanford Stadium.

No. 7 Auburn at No. 4 Georgia (-6.5): The wrong team is favored here. I don’t buy that JT Daniels is 100% following his knee injury last season or that he has the same ceiling as he did prior to it. Whether it’s Daniels or Stetson Bennett IV, Auburn’s defense won’t be threatened by an offense that struggled to find its sea legs. Auburn has its work cut out for it on offense, though. Quarterback Bo Nix looked better after some halftime adjustments last week, and there’s no doubt that coach Gus Malzahn and offensive coordinator Chad Morris held back much of the offense against Kentucky. Take those points, but you won’t need them. Auburn will win this game outright. Pick: Auburn (+6.5)

We tend to agree with Sallee here. While the arrival of Daniels will most likely give Georgia a better option at quarterback, the Tigers are coming off an impressive performance against Kentucky.

Who will Auburn face from Georgia at the quarterback position?

Georgia is keeping tight on whether J.T. Daniels will be the starter at quarterback for the Dawgs as Auburn battles them in Athens Saturday.

[jwplayer tDekBTFB]

If you are an Auburn fan, you just knew that somehow J.T. Daniels would immediately be cleared for this week’s top-10 matchup for Georgia. That was no question. But is he going to be the one the Tigers see when they take the field on defense on Saturday in Athens?

All signs point to yes but there is still a chance that Stetson Bennett, who replaced D’Wan Mathis in the opener against Arkansas and put up 211 yards and two touchdowns, could be the guy.

Bennett seemed to settle into the position as the game went along against the Razorbacks but Daniels is the guy that the Bulldogs have been waiting on to see on the field. The transfer from USC and former No. 2 overall quarterback in the 2018 signing class showed signs of what he is capable of as a freshman for the Trojans in 2018, throwing for 2,672 yards and 14 touchdowns but still put up 10 interceptions.

He was supposed to have a breakout season last year for Clay Helton’s team but that immediately took a wrong turn as he was injured in the season opener against Fresno State.

Bennett is more of a game-manager type quarterback while Daniels can be a star at the position. He’s not exactly Matt Stafford or Aaron Murray, two quarterbacks that Georgia has thrown at the Tigers in recent history, but the capability is there. You just have to wonder about the rust that has built up after not playing in a game for more than a year.

Luckily, Auburn has one of the top defensive coordinators in the country in Kevin Steele on staff and he will have his players ready for whatever Kirby Smart decides to do with the quarterback situation. Whether it is Daniels or Bennett, the Tigers will be ready.

Why Auburn Will Win

How much do you believe in the Georgia offense?

D’Wan Mathis struggled against Arkansas – to be very, very nice about it – and Stetson Bennett stepped in and was solid, throwing for 211 yards and two touchdowns. Now USC JT Daniels has been medically cleared to play to throw another wrinkle in the quarterback mix.

But there’s a running game to rely on, right?

42 carries, 121 yards – fewer than three yards per carry – in the 37-10 win over the Hogs.

Meanwhile, Bo Nix was solid in the 29-13 win over Kentucky, looking and playing like a guy with a year of starting experience under his belt. He’s still misfiring a bit too often, but with NFL-caliber receivers Seth Williams, Anthony Schwartz, and Eli Stove to throw to, the passing game worked early on.

However …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Georgia Will Win

Yes, the Bulldog offense might be a question mark, but the defense will continue to be a rock.

The Georgia secondary was terrific against Feleipe Franks and the Hogs – coming up with three interceptions including a pick-six from Eric Stokes – and the run defense was a rock. Arkansas didn’t have any room to move, and now the Bulldog defensive front gets an Auburn running game that didn’t work against Kentucky.

Bo Nix led the team with 34 rushing yards with the backs not doing enough to shake free. The Bulldogs defense isn’t going to get give up more than 150 yards on the ground – it’s going to be Nix or bust.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia might not be anything pretty, but it’ll be effective.

From the two turnovers, to the shaky quarterback play in the slow start, to the 12 penalties, it was a rough outing for a Bulldog team that was able to get by Arkansas just by being far more talented on D.

The Auburn defense will show up, too, keeping the game close. A few big plays from the Tiger receiving corps will keep the pressure on, but the Bulldogs will survive on a late score and a big defensive stop.

Everything Gus Malzahn said ahead of Auburn’s battle against Georgia

Auburn takes on Georgia in a top-10 matchup on Saturday evening in Athens.

Auburn battles Georgia in a top-10 matchup on Saturday night in Athens. Here is Everything Gus Malzahn had to say about his Tigers and previewing the game.

Opening statement… “We’re real excited to be playing Georgia, going there this year. You’re looking at a team that’s probably the most talented team overall in the SEC. They are very well coached. You look at them defensively, they’re very sound. They make you earn stuff. They don’t give up a whole lot of big plays. They’ve got most of their defense back that I thought was excellent last year. Their defensive coordinator does a great job, and obviously Kirby (Smart) has his hand on the defense. They’re one of the best in the country. Offensively, their OC Todd Monken is a guy that’s been successful in college and successful in the NFL. It’s a good big task for us, but I will say this — our guys are extremely excited to be going there and playing Georgia.”

On the challenges the Georgia secondary presents… “They are very sound; they have good cover guys and they know their answers. They do a good job of mixing things up and, if you put that with their front, which does a good job of pressuring the quarterback, they complement each other.”

Preparing for J.T. Daniels… “In a way, it’s like another first-game preparation; you’ve just got to be prepared to adjust. Last week, I thought our defense adjusted well in the second half. If they end up playing him it could be a period of time to adjust based on what the plan is.”

Georgia’s strengths in stopping the run… “Last year we played them late in the season and I don’t think they had given up a rushing touchdown all year and we got one on a quarterback run. They’ve got just about everybody back. You’re looking at not just one of the best rushing defenses, if not the best rushing defense in the country, but one of the best overall defenses. After last year, I felt that they were the best defense we played all year. They’ve got so many guys back and they make you earn it — that’s the key. They mix things up, they check when you check and they are a very sound unit.”

Preparing for Georgia’s special teams… “They’ve got a lot of talent. You watch them on special teams, they’ve got real speed and real talent on special teams. Any time you’re talking about speed on special teams, that’s usually the difference maker. We’re going to have to do a great job with speed, technique and everything that goes into that, to try to win this special teams battle.”

On the play of the secondary and Jaylin Simpson… “First of all, I thought Jaylin Simpson did a good job, especially his first time back — he played safety last year. I think overall it’s very good stuff. That’s a group you’ll see improve each game. (Looked like Simpson limped off) “Yeah, he’s good. We’re hopeful that we will have everybody to go to Georgia.”

About the development of the Auburn running game…  “Chad’s (Morris) got the playbook and he can do a lot of different things in the running game. You’ll see us each week improving the running game. Having a lot of different things you can do is good. The more we can settle in on five linemen as we talked about Sunday, that up front will help us as far as the running game goes.”

On Bo Nix’s pooch punts… “Last week he executed extremely well. I think we pinned them down more than one time and I think in that series we almost got a safety, it was close and they punted out of their end zone and then the other one was inside the 10-yard line. Bo did a really good job executing that. We’ll see what happens moving forward. Some games that’s good, some games it’s not. Last Saturday, it was a good weapon.”

On defensive adjustments… “The great thing is it’s his (Coach Kevin Steele) 5th year with us, too, so our players know the system, and they know after he makes changes, they know what to do and to execute it. Both of these factors combined are good.”

On Georgia’s secondary limiting receiving yards last year… “First of all, they have very good players, and they are very well coached, so it’s a combination of that. Like I said, they do I good job of mixing things up, but they also do a good job of keeping things in front of them. It’s tough to get explosive plays. Of course, that will be a key. We’re going to have to have some explosive plays in the passing game to be able to score points, so I think that’s important.”

Has limited seating capacity taken away some home-field advantage… “It’s a unique year; I think everybody is learning as they go. I do expect it loud over there and we’ll to be able to adjust to that. Each week, teams will learn; this will be our first road game. We were able to have a home game and I think our crowd did a really good job, like I talked about after the game. We expect it to be loud and we’ll learn after this first road game”

On his relationship with Dell McGee… “I was the coordinator here and Dell was the head coach in Georgia at a high school. He’s an Auburn guy, so I just kept my eye on him, got to know him. When I got the job in 2013, I felt really strong about hiring as many high school coaches (as I could). I was a high school coach that had the opportunity that I was given; I wanted to do the same thing for him. He was one of those guys that came onboard with us in 2013 and did an excellent job. He’s a really good person and I felt like he would have the chance to be successful at the college level, and he’s done that at the two stops he’s been at.” (Will he be a head coach some day?) “I think he’s a very talented guy. He’s on the rise and it doesn’t surprise me.”

On the defensive line’s play… “I was impressed [against Kentucky]. We were concerned going in; they had four returning starters and they led the league in rushing last year. I was impressed with our guys. We played a lot of different guys. You look at Georgia’s offensive line and they are a good offensive line, too. That group up front will have a chance to improve each week.”

Covid update…“Our latest testing, we had no positives again, so that’s a really good sign. It’s something that we have to continue. It’s a sacrifice that our guys have made. It’s one of those deals where you test three times a week and you kind of hold your breath each time. Not just for players, but for staff too. You just have to be ready for all the what-ifs. What-if this, what-if that. It’s just the nature of where we’re at this year. If our guys continue to do a super job like they have, that’s going to be a positive.”

On Bo Nix’s run performance…“I think you have to have everything available against a good defense, whether it’s run, pass or whatever. Bo [Nix] did some really good things last year. It was a tough loss. We were down by seven. We got our ball down there at the 19-yard line, completed one and then it was a tough overturn. I think it could’ve made a difference in the game, but I thought Bo did a really good job bringing us back. I felt that in the fourth quarter we had a really good chance with his leadership. He’s got a year under his belt; I think that’ll help him with this game playing them one other time before.”

Difficulty of playing in Athens, Ga.…“First of all, I think that’s one of the toughest places to play in the league. That’s just the facts of the matter. You have to play good football to have a chance to win. Then if it’s a close game, you have to find a way to make those plays to win. Like I said earlier, we’ll see about the crowd, but I do expect it to be loud. We’ll know more after the game as far as if it’s the same or not.”

On playing Georgia early in the season… “This year is so unique. It is what it is. It feels exactly as it would in November. We know how important it is. This game usually has a direct effect on the east and the west. It doesn’t matter if we’re playing today or in November or in March.”

On J.J. Pegues… “We thought he played well. He’s a guy that’s extremely talented and has great potential. We’ll see what that means moving forward but, for the first time, I’ll say all our freshmen we had out there did some good things. There’s nothing like a first game for a freshman. Like okay, that’s what it feels like, okay, that’s the speed — all those guys that played are really good players.”

About Tashawn Manning and Brodarious Hamm now in the starting lineup as cancer survivors… “It’s a great story. Both those young men have overcome so much. Then the fact this is the year you see a lot of people opting out around the country, and both those guys are hanging in there and played well Saturday — you know they’re veteran guys. They’re veteran guys, they’re tough guys, and they’ve both overcome a lot.”

On Nix’s ability to throw off his back foot and if it is a bit of a concern…“Yeah, I mean, you know, there are certain times that he had a little bit of pressure that he had to, but that was talking about the one he pump-faked off his back foot and he threw it about 40 yards across the field on a dime — I just told him good job. That was pretty good stuff. I thought he played real well. You’re always looking for things to improve on, but he keeps throwing dimes 40 yards down the field off the back foot, I’m going to give him a high-five, OK.”

On what makes the Auburn-Georgia rivalry special…“Well, I mean, you know it’s the oldest rivalry in the South, first of all. We recruit the state; I think a third of our team is from the state of Georgia. You can look at it since I’ve been at Auburn, it’s always been very, very important and the winner’s usually went on to do real well. So, it’s a big one.”

His impressions of J.T. Daniels…“He’s talented. That’s probably the best way to put it. We just know he’s talented.”

On Rhett Lashlee’s success at Miami…“What he’s done at Miami — what they were the last two years — what he’s done is unbelievable — probably the best coaching job in the country up to this point. But that doesn’t surprise me at all. He’s a real smart guy. He’s a great coach. He’s a relationship guy. His players believe in him. So, I’m real happy and he has a real offense going on right now. So, it’s exciting to watch.”

Georgia QB J.T. Daniels cleared for Auburn game

Auburn makes on Georgia in a top-10 matchup on Saturday in Athens.

(This post was originally published on UGA Wire.)

Former five-star recruit and USC transfer quarterback J.T. Daniels has officially been cleared for Georgia, heading into the season’s second game against Auburn.

Daniels suffered an ACL tear on Aug. 31 last year while with the Trojans and has been given the green light by doctors to resume his football career.

As a freshman in 2018, Daniels threw for 2,672 yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Georgia lost three-year starting quarterback Jake Fromm to the NFL draft this offseason as well as Wake Forest graduate transfer Jamie Newman, who opted out of the 2020 college football season due to COVID-19 concerns.

Head coach Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Todd Monken gave redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis the nod for the opener against Arkansas, but he was benched after poor play for junior Stetson Bennett. Bennett played an incredible game, completing 69 percent of his passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns in just three quarters.

Now that Daniels is cleared, there should be a massive quarterback battle for the Bulldogs. Mathis showed glimpses of greatness in his first career collegiate start while Bennett showed great poise and game management, securing the Georgia win.

It will be interesting to see who coach Smart names as the starter for the Dawgs’ home opener against the Auburn Tigers. Smart has made it clear the return of Daniels means the quarterback battle will be even tougher.

Georgia kicks off against Auburn this Saturday between the hedges at 7:30 p.m. EDT on ESPN.

Rodrigo Blankenship congratulates Georgia P Jake Camarda for winning SEC honor

Georgia football punter Jake Camarda’s earned himself SEC special teams player of the week honors and Rodrigo Blankenship was quick to congr

In Saturday’s win at Auburn, Georgia punter Jake Camarda’s performance earned him the honor of Southeastern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. Camarda isn’t the first recipient of the award to suit up for the Silver Britches this season.

His teammate, kicker Rodrigo Blankenship, is no stranger to the award and was among the first to congratulate Camarda this afternoon.

This is the fourth time this season that a Georgia Bulldog has been named the SEC’s Special Teamer of the week. The other three were awarded to Camarda’s hype man Blankenship.

Camarda was called to punt 11 times for the Dawgs against the Tigers, averaging 50.7 yards per attempt including an early 67 yard bomb that stuck Auburn at their own goal line.

Blankenship recently called for Camarda to be recognized as game MVP in the Bulldogs’ win on The Plains.

In a defensive struggle that 1) was heavily reliant on field position and 2) resulted in a division-clinching win for Georgia, it’s hard to argue with Hot Rod. Jake Camarda came up big.

What we learned from Georgia football’s win at Auburn

Defense again stole the show for Georgia on Saturday as the Dawgs picked up their SEC East-clinching win in a trip to Auburn.

Defense again stole the show for Georgia on Saturday as the Dawgs picked up their SEC East-clinching win in a trip to Auburn. The offense sputtered, but came through when needed. What did we learn?

Georgia’s defense is historically great, but has its flaws.

Oh no, Georgia gave up its first rushing touchdown of the season. It took ten games for any team to accomplish that against the Bulldogs.

What really hurt Georgia over the course of the game? Slant routes. Auburn simply abused Bulldog cornerbacks with quick 10 yard gains early on in drives, and while Georgia’s defense eventually stepped it up and forced several midfield punts and fourth down attempts, the Tigers’ offense out-gained and out-possessed Georgia’s offense on the day largely due to their quick chunk plays.

LSU still needs one more win to clinch the SEC West, but regardless of whether Georgia will meet Heisman hopeful Joe Burrow or an Alabama squad who recently lost its star quarterback, the Dawgs’ secondary will have to tighten things up in Atlanta when facing either one of two Western Division powerhouses that are ranked within the top ten nationally in total offense.

Switching to a soft zone defense late in the game when your defense has dominated all day may not be a good idea.

Georgia had all the momentum going into the fourth quarter. With a 21-0 lead, Georgia’s defense switched from their smothering man defense to a soft zone, presumably so as to not give up any home run plays.

However, Auburn then scored two touchdowns within the span of three minutes and found themselves driving to level the score in the game’s waning minutes.

All’s well that ends well, but switching to zone and nearly snatching defeat from the jaws of victory likely shaved some time off Georgia fans’ lifespans.

In a defensive battle, Jake Camarda can be the difference.

The Bulldogs’ punter has had a good season, not a great one. Yesterday on The Plains, however, Jake Camarda looked NFL-caliber. A certain special teams specialist even called him the game’s most valuable player.

He averaged just north of 50 yards per punt against the Tigers, including a booming 67 yarder that pinned Auburn at its own two yard line. In a matchup which your offense requires you to punt 11 times (including NINE three-and-outs), consistency is key in allowing your defense to control the pace of the game.

Georgia’s offense revolves around the offensive line.

Okay, maybe we knew this much earlier on. That being said, they looked stout against an Auburn front seven who came into the game averaging two and a half sacks per contest. Georgia allowed just one sack, which became only the sixth sack they’ve allowed all season.

Jake Fromm didn’t look as crisp as he’s looked in the past, but his pass protection provided by the Great Wall of Georgia allowed him all day to throw. Perfect blocking and a perfect throw gave Georgia a first quarter lead it would never relinquish.

Fromm would later toss two additional beautiful touch passes to Brian Herrien and Eli Wolf. D’Andre Swift recorded yet another 100 yard rushing performance. The offensive line continues to stand tall, literally and figuratively.

D’Andre Swift is not a human, he’s a tornado.

We’ve seen Swift with some mean tackle-avoiding spin moves before, but his latest is absurd. How quickly he managed to turn that full 360 degrees blows my mind, and with a hand in his face and a tackler closing in, he casually trotted for a first down.

Overall, what did we learn? Them Dawgs is hell.

Talk of the Barn: UGA Wire conducts Q+A with pair of Auburn students

UGA Wire interviews pair of Auburn students on Saturday’s upcoming game with Georgia

Georgia will renew a storied rivalry Saturday against Auburn on the Plains.

Before the Bulldogs and Tigers kick off, we wanted to give you a different perspective on the game. You’ve heard what the Georgia and Auburn media have to say and you probably know how your fellow Dawg fans feel heading into this contest.

But what about the Barners?

Credit: Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

(Barners are Auburn fans, by the way)

We talked to a pair of Auburn students, who you might remember from last winter’s basketball articles, on the big game.

Down on ‘the Plains’ we have Miles Espy who is a graduate student at Auburn University and a longtime Tiger athletics season ticket holder, while Frank Parker is an undergraduate student who also attends a number of athletic events at the Barn.

After a successful segment on the hardwood with these two last February, we decided to bring them back. Below, you will find all the information you need from two surprisingly confident Auburn fans heading into Saturday.

Let’s get to it.

We’ve heard a lot about Auburn’s daunting defensive front, including the almost irreplaceable Derrick Brown. Aside from the defense, what can we expect to be Auburn’s biggest strength on Saturday, specifically on offense?

Parker: “I think the biggest strength of Auburn offensively will be the depth at running back. The true freshman DJ Williams has proven himself to be a #1 back with his ability to run between the tackles and catch passes out of the backfield and when you pair that with Whitlow’s return from injury and the always sneaky Shaun Shivers we have a very talented and deep backfield that will give the Dawgs fits.”

Espy: “Auburn’s defense gets a lot of the credit as they should, but Auburn’s offense does have some things going for it. I would say a player to look out for when Auburn is on offense is Anthony Schwartz. A question Georgia fans need to ask themselves is ‘what does Gus Malzahn like to do on offense in big games?’ He loves to run a lot of gadget plays and trick plays. Anthony Schwartz has been on the receiving end of a lot of these classic Gus Malzahn trick plays. He runs on Auburn’s track team, is training for the summer Olympics in 2020, and has run the 100-meter dash in 10.07 seconds. Look for the Tigers to get him the ball in creative ways on Saturday.”

The Tigers have beaten Georgia and Alabama six times this decade, but only one of those wins came on the road (2010 Alabama). Following up on that, what is it that makes Auburn’s home field advantage so special? Not counting the 2010 championship season, almost every major Auburn win this decade has come at home or a neutral-site venue. How does Auburn make a stadium so similar in size to Georgia’s that much tougher to play at?

Parker: “Auburn’s home field advantage is unlike any other in the country. You can tell that the players really feed off the fans and when the student section is rocking and the fans are into it I don’t think any team can come in there and confidently say that they are going to beat this Auburn team.”

Espy: “I’ve attended several Auburn home games throughout the year, and I’ve seen Auburn play at Sanford Stadium four times, including our thrilling 31-30 victory in 2005. The biggest difference is the student sections. Sanford Stadium gets plenty loud, and their students love football just like Auburn students. However, Sanford Stadium has their students scattered throughout the stadium, whereas Jordan-Hare Stadium keeps all the students in one defined area. I believe this, as well as having the largest jumbo-tron in college football, makes Auburn a more intimidating place than Georgia.”

This Auburn team opened the season with a come-from-behind win over a very good Oregon team. After that, the Tigers dropped their two biggest games of the season to date, though they were on the road. The offense has its struggles, but the defense has proven it can keep them in big-time matchups for the majority of the game. With an extra week to prepare for the Bulldogs and a little home-cooking, will we see a difference in the Auburn offense on Saturday? Can Auburn figure out how to put 6’s on the board rather than 3’s?

Parker: “I think we will see Auburn get back to basics this week. Gus is determined to run the ball against this vaunted Dawgs defense and if Bo Nix can minimize mistakes and not have any turnovers Auburn has a great chance to win this game. The bye week certainly helps, considering Gus Malzahn is 8-0 after bye weeks since he has been at Auburn and he is outscoring opponents 282-180 after bye weeks. That extra week really helps round out the game plan.”

Espy: “I think so. I’m not saying Auburn will look like LSU on offense, but I think they look better than they did against Florida and LSU. Something you have to remember is while Bo Nix is an incredibly talented QB and has future Heisman potential, he is only a true freshman. I think the crowd noise at The Swamp and Death Valley gave him problems. He has played much better when the crowd is on his side. He has thrown for more than 300 yards in his last two home games, which were against SEC defenses. This should help Auburn get more touchdowns instead of field goals.”

Every year Kirby Smart has been at Georgia, the Bulldogs have dropped their annual SEC West road game in the middle of the season. With an embarrassing loss to South Carolina in October, playoff hopes are on life alert unless Georgia wins out. Do you think Auburn can catch Georgia off-guard like in 2017 or will the Dawgs be ready this time, after that terrible defeat to a head coach who works for Georgia?

Parker: “Kirby will definitely have his team ready for Saturday. They can’t afford to drop another game if they want their playoff hopes to remain alive. However, this Auburn team is hungry and would love to play spoiler for its rival. It’s gonna come down to which offense can get it going against these very tough defenses.”

Espy: “Georgia wasn’t caught off guard in 2017, and they definitely will not be caught off guard this year. Auburn is a hostile environment to play in and Auburn had a very good team in 2017 and has a very good team this year. As a matter of fact, I guarantee you UGA has had this game circled on their calendars. Players like Jake Fromm and D’Andre Swift remember getting embarrassed at Jordan-Hare two years ago, and they’d love nothing more than to get a win in their return visit.”

Of course we know who you want to win the game, but answering as neutral as possible, what is your score prediction for Saturday? Will the Dawgs clinch the East and head to Atlanta with playoff hopes still alive or will Auburn play the role of spoiler in Jordan-Hare?

Parker: “My score prediction for this weekend predicts an Auburn victory by a score of 17-13. I think it will be a hard fought, physical game where each of the defenses control the game. However, I believe the extra week off will give Auburn the edge so that they can come out on top.”

Espy: “I definitely see a low scoring game. Auburn’s offense has been slow against big time defenses, and Georgia’s offense has been a disappointment this year. Georgia will win the SEC East, but it will not be clinched this weekend! In a battle of two similar teams when it comes to talent, I’ll take the team with home field advantage. Auburn wins 20-10.”

If you could only pick 1 of your 37 mascots to be the official face of Auburn Athletics, which would it be? It’s kind of confusing with all of this Wartigerplainsmen stuff, ya know?

Parker: “I’m not going to entertain this question.”

Espy: “This is such a wonderful question and so beautifully asked. A simple google search would inform you that Auburn’s official mascot is Aubie the tiger. Aubie is a 9-time mascot national champion compared to Hairy Dawg, who has 0.”

(Seems a bit harsh Miles…)

Let’s say Georgia and Alabama beat Auburn, who ends up finishing 0-4 against the SEC elites. Is Gus’ job safe?

Parker: “If Auburn drops both games against UGA and Alabama, I still think Gus’s job is safe. With the highly ranked recruiting class coming in and a young quarterback who has the potential to be a star I don’t see the university letting go of Gus just yet.”

Espy: “I don’t see this happening, but if it does, certainly not. I’ll hate it if Gus is let go. Gus is a very good and underappreciated coach. He’s been more successful against Nick Saban than any other coach in the SEC. However, when your biggest rival has potentially the greatest coach in the history of college football, you’re constantly going to be compared to him.”

How do you expect each of these teams to finish the season? (Guess final record entering bowl season and their bowl or playoff destination.) Ex: Auburn goes 8-4 and makes the Outback Bowl.

Parker: “I think Auburn ends 9-3 and plays in the Outback bowl against Michigan. I think UGA ends 10-2 and winds up in the Orange bowl vs Wake Forest or the Cotton Bowl vs Memphis.”

Espy: “I see both teams ending with the same record in 10-2. Unfortunately, this will not be enough for Auburn to get in the college football playoffs, and I see the Tigers ending up ranked in the 5th spot. I think Georgia is not far behind in the final rankings in around the 7th. This will be good enough for both teams to go to quality New Years Six bowls and beat a team from a lesser conference. Auburn and Georgia finish 11-2.”

That’s all folks! Make sure to check back with UGA Wire throughout the weekend as we bring you extended coverage of Georgia-Auburn.
