Arizona State WR Brandon Aiyuk could add dynamic element to Chargers’ offense

The Los Angeles Chargers should have this dynamic playmaker on their radar.

Speed kills.

That’s something that the Los Angeles Chargers have been lacking at the wide receiver position. The talent is there with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams highlighting the group, but they could be touted as one of the best corps in the league if they were to add a dynamic play-maker at the position.

Insert former Arizona State wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Aiyuk was a phenomenal wideout in his two years at Sierra College – a community college in Northern California. He totaled 2,499 all-purpose yards and 21 touchdowns in his two-year career. He had a few offers, including Alabama, Tennessee, Kansas and Arizona State.

But ASU was one of few schools that actually wanted him to play receiver and a return specialist, not a cornerback, so he elected to play for the Sun Devils. After two years of junior college, Aiyuk was immediately inserted into the wide receiver rotation upon arriving.

In 2018, he caught 33 passes that season for 474 yards and three touchdowns. Little did we know that Aiyuk was about to be in store for a monster senior season after the offense was more tailored to former teammate and current Patriots wideout N’Keal Harry.

Serving as freshman phenom quarterback Jayden Daniel’s go-to guy, Aiyuk was targeted 99 times in 2019, hauling in 65 of them for 1,192 yards and eight touchdowns. Dangerous with the ball in his hands, he was near unstoppable after the catch with 18.3 yards per reception.

In a league where getting open and stretching the field has become a must to have offensive success, there’s no denying that Aiyuk has a skillset that matches what is being needed in today’s NFL.

Listed at 6-foot-1 and 206 pounds, Aiyuk has been blessed with an uncommon blend of burst, agility and track-like long speed.

Aiyuk changes speeds and direction incredibly well. He makes dynamic cuts that showcase tremendous acceleration, putting his foot in the ground without losing any speed and exploding upfield.

Aiyuk, who’s expected to run in the low 4.4’s, is capable of blowing right by defensive backs on vertical routes if they play in off-man coverage or they simply don’t get their hands on him.

[wpvideo Z1d5TsGV]

He’s also explosive as a return specialist. He averaged 34 yards per kick return and 16 yards per punt return. That special teams ability could allow Aiyuk to make an immediate impact for the Chargers, knowing they have struggled to find a consistent return man.

The area where Aiyuk will have to improve in is being more consistent with using his hands to defeat press coverage. He needs to get better in contested catch situations as he doesn’t have the “go get it” mentality as much to extend throwing windows.

However, Aiyuk’s play-making athleticism is what would be the selling point for the Bolts.

The former Arizona State product is currently being viewed as a top-50 prospect, which means that the second-round is where they would likely have to draft him.

It seems a bit rich to address the wide receiver position that early even though it is a positional group that needs to be solidified. But general manager Tom Telesco could see this as an opportunity to give whoever is behind center another dynamic option.

The thought of Allen in the slot, Williams as the X, Aiyuk as the Z and tight end Hunter Henry would force defensive coordinators to really draw up an efficient game-plan to stop this prolific group on a weekly basis.

Frank Solich was bathed in french fries after Ohio won the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

Bowl season is giving new meanings to baths coaches get after their school is victorious. First, Herman Edwards was showered with Frosted Flakes after Arizona State won the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl. And, now, we have 75-year-old Frank Solich being doused with french fries, of course, following Ohio’s win over Nevada Friday in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

Have to think there are plenty of companies that will see this as an opportunity. The Olive Garden Pasta Bowl for starters sounds like a great and awful idea all at once. The Campbell’s Souper Bowl? A Starbucks Bowl or a Carvel Bowl could get sticky.

Quite sure some coaches would rather be bathed in cereal than the energy drink during the postgame celebrations in the winter.

Arizona State: How a reserve scored 43 of 56 points for the Sun Devils

This is the weirdest box score ever.

We saw what was easily one of the weirdest box scores ever on Wednesday night. The St. Mary’s Gaels beat the Arizona State Sun Devils 96-56, with Alonzo Verge Jr. scoring 43 of the Sun Devils’ 56 points off the bench.

It’s crazy impressive to see a player score 76% of his team’s points. What’s even crazier is that he did it off of the bench. Reserve players aren’t supposed to do that — especially on the college level.

How did this even happen? Let’s take a closer look at the film.

Verge was the entire offense

Verge took 29 of his team’s 64 shots yesterday. No one else had more than nine shots. Only two of his teammates scored in the game. He straight up took things over and wasn’t productive while he did it.

Verge was a -38 in the box score. That’s not good. After watching this highlight reel, you’ll see why.

There are lots of TOUGH buckets from Verge there. There are fantastic highlights and noteworthy moments… just coming from him alone.

He ran a ton of pick and roll and got going downhill in the half-court, but he only used his ability to penetrate to score for himself. He didn’t create much for his teammates — he had two assists next to five turnovers. That’s bad offense when you’re touching the ball that much.

On top of that, only six of Verge’s 29 attempts were from deep. The Sun Devils shot 22 total from long range and only made three. Meanwhile, the Gaels hit 16 of 26 attempts from three-point range. Simple math says that’s a blowout.

You still can’t blame Verge for shooting

None of this is Verge’s fault, by the way.

He’s always been a bucket. When his team was down big, he went back to what he knew. As the illustrious Jordan Crawford once said,  “who else gon’ shoot it?” Verge was just trying to win.

Head coach Bobby Hurley — yes, that Bobby Hurley — explained it best.

“Once he got going, we knew we had to keep riding him and give him the ball just about every time down the court. That was frustrating that you have that little of guys playing well that you have to resort to that tactic,” he told reporters after the game.

That’s kind of just it. Nothing too much to read into here. It’s not typically how things go — Verge only averages 9.9 shots per game. It probably won’t happen again.

But, man, was it ever weird.

Watch: Notre Dame Football Offers ’21 Safety

Xamarion Gordon, a defensive back that plays some corner and some safety.  His highlight film his junior year shows a player that’s more than happy to step up and make a tackle.

Even without Notre Dame taking the field this weekend they were still making news as they’ve offered a scholarship to try and help solidify their defensive backfield in the 2021 recruiting class.

Notre Dame’s 2021 recruiting class currently has seven commitments but only Gabriel Rubio (defensive tackle) of Saint Peters, Missouri is the only defensive commitment.

Gordon holds scholarship offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Oklahoma, Oregon State, San Jose State, USC, Utah and Washington State.

Notre Dame Football: Ole Miss Coaching Search Includes Irish Assistant

a Notre Dame assistant has now been linked to an SEC opening.
And it’s not Clark Lea.

We’ve been on the lookout for star Notre Dame defensive coordinator Clark Lea as coaching changes have been happening all around college football. The former Vanderbilt fullback won’t return to his alma mater since the Commodores didn’t make a coaching change but a Notre Dame assistant has now been linked to an SEC opening.

And it’s not Clark Lea.

247Sports is reporting that as of Tuesday night that Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chip Long has emerged as a candidate to fill the Ole Miss head coaching vacancy.

Long has been at Notre Dame since 2017 when he took over as offensive coordinator.

Long began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Louisville in 2007 before stays in various positions at Arkansas, Illinois, Arizona State and Memphis.

Long went to Memphis with Mike Norvell in 2016 and spent one season there before headed to South Bend to call Notre Dame’s offense which he has had great success with, helping guide the Irish to now three-straight 10-win seasons.

My initial thought is that yeah, you hate to break-up something that is working but in all honesty – what is Notre Dame’s offensive identity this year?

There is something to be said with being able to get by somewhat on the fly, but it’s hardly a unit that dominates in any one capacity.

My initial thoughts upon reading this are more “Thank goodness it’s not Lea” than it is “Don’t leave, Chip!”

Oregon at Arizona State odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Oregon Ducks at Arizona State Sun Devils betting odds and lines, with college football analysis, picks and best bets.

The Oregon Ducks (9-1, 7-0 Pac-12 North) and Arizona State Sun Devils (5-5, 2-5 Pac-12 South) meet Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Oregon-Arizona State odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Oregon at Arizona State: Three things you need to know

1. The Ducks look to keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive and cannot afford to be tripped up against the Sun Devils, or against Oregon State in the Civil War.

2. Oregon enters 4-1 against the spread in the past five Pac-12 battles, while the Sun Devils are 0-3-1 ATS in the past four league outings.

3. The Ducks rank 14th in the country with 37.8 points per game (PPG), and they’re 10th in the land defensively, yielding just 14.8 PPG.

Prediction

Oregon 34, Arizona State 13

Moneyline (ML)

The moneyline is just not worth the risk. Oregon (-667) is too expensive, and Arizona State (+445) just doesn’t have the consistent offensive attack to stay with the high-octane Ducks.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Oregon to win outright would return a profit of $1.50.

Against the Spread (ATS)

OREGON (-14.5, -105) is the play here, although I’d feel a lot more comfortable buying the line down under two touchdowns or playing this game as part of a large teaser.

Arizona State (+14.5, -115) is just 1-4-1 ATS in the past six at home, and 2-5 ATS in the past seven at home against the Ducks. Oregon is 8-3-1 ATS in the past 12 meetings overall in this series, too.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 52.5 (-110) is the play, going 12-4-1 in Oregon’s last 17 games on the road and 7-1 in its past eight on a grass surface. The Over is 4-1 in Arizona State’s past five overall, but the Under is 5-2 in the past seven following a non-cover in its previous outing.

Arizona State-Oregon State odds: Sun Devils small road favorite

Previewing Saturday’s Arizona State Sun Devils at Oregon State Beavers college football matchup, with NCAA football betting odds, picks and best bets

The Arizona State Sun Devils (5-4, 2-4 Pac-12 South), on the road for the final time this season, visit the Oregon State Beavers (4-5, 3-3 Pac-12 North) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET (on FS1).

We analyze the Arizona State-Oregon State odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Arizona State at Oregon State: Three things you need to know

1. ASU freshman QB Jayden Daniels will return to the starting lineup after missing the last game against USC.

2. The Sun Devils have lost three straight conference games.

3. The Beavers have only won once this season at home.

Prediction

Arizona State 31, Oregon State 20

Moneyline (ML)

Oregon State is suddenly playing better but still is a 4-5 team, having lost four of five at home. They offer value at +120, but the SUN DEVILS are the smarter bet at -143.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Arizona State returns a profit of $7.

Against the Spread (ATS)

The SUN DEVILS have not been a good bet against the spread. They are favored by 2.5 (-121) on the road, but have covered the spread only three times all season.

Oregon State, on the other hand, is 6-3 against the spread. However, the Arizona State defense should hold up and RB Eno Benjamin should be able to be the workhorse, as the Beavers allow over 192 rushing yards per game.

Lay the points with ASU.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total is set at 57.5 points, which is high. Both teams have hit the under in five of their nine games this season. The two teams combine to average 53 points. That is right about where Saturday’s game will end.

Take the UNDER (-115).
