Former four-star prospect Anquin Barnes transfers to Colorado after three seasons at Alabama

Another transfer out of the SEC is coming to Colorado

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders pulled in quite the transfer portal haul on Sunday.

Four total players committed to the Buffs: wide receiver Cordale Russell (TCU), defensive end Quency Wiggins (LSU), quarterback Walter Taylor (Vanderbilt) and defensive lineman Anquin Barnes (Alabama). Considering how much help the Buffs’ D-line needs between the tackles, Barnes might be the most important player of the bunch.

The 6-foot-5, 315-pound Alabama native was a four-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class but hasn’t seen much action during his three years in Tuscaloosa. This past season, he appeared in only two games and didn’t record any statistics.

Barnes was recruited to Alabama by current Colorado defensive coordinator Charles Kelly, according to 247Sports.

With the addition of Barnes and three others on Sunday, Colorado now has 15 incoming transfers, the most among Big 12 schools.

Nationally, Colorado’s transfer class is still ranked second to Ole Miss, per 247Sports.

Former Alabama DL Anquin Barnes announces transfer destination

After three years with the Alabama football program, defensive lineman [autotag]Anquin Barnes[/autotag] announced his decision to enter the transfer portal and continue his career with Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes. The Buffs need a lot of help on both sides of the line so it is a very good addition for Prime, and for Barnes, he will have a chance to be an immediate impact player.

Barnes recorded no stats during his time with Alabama so it was clear that finding a new home was likely his best decision. Coach Saban is usually very open and honest with players about what is best for their careers and I am sure this was an amicable and mutual decision.

According to 247 Sports composite rankings, Barnes was a three-star recruit out of high school. He was the No. 55 DL in the class and the No. 453 player overall so he could be a really nice piece for Colorado.

Wisconsin offers a former Alabama defensive lineman

Wisconsin offers a former Alabama defensive lineman

Wisconsin has been on a transfer portal blitz over the last few weeks. Luke Fickell, along with every other coach in the sport, is required to act fast if he has any hope of improving the roster entering 2024 and, in many cases, make up for the players that were lost.

One of the biggest areas of needed improvement is at defensive line. Wisconsin’s schedule is only getting tougher, and with those games comes a greater need a dominating inside.

Signaling this, Fickell and his staff recently extended an offer to former Alabama transfer defensive lineman Anquin Barnes.

Barnes joined the Crimson Tide as a four-star recruit in the class of 2021. He was ranked as the No. 44 defensive lineman in the class and No. 16 recruit from the state of Alabama.

Despite the high billing, he appeared in only two games during his three years in Tuscaloosa: this past season against MTSU and Chattanooga.

Wisconsin is looking to replace the dependability and production of redshirt seniors Gio Paez and Rodas Johnson. While the line wasn’t necessarily dominant this past season, it wasn’t a massive weakness.

Fickell’s team will need reinforcements at that position, along with at linebacker and elsewhere if it wants to improve upon its 7-5 2023 record.

Alabama reserve DL Anquin Barnes to enter NCAA transfer portal

Barnes becomes the fifth Alabama player to enter the transfer portal.

With Nick Saban and the Alabama football getting prepared for another run in the College Football Playoff, the Crimson Tide has been one of the few teams to not see a mass exodus of players into the NCAA transfer portal.

On Monday, reserve defensive lineman Anquin Barnes announced his intentions to enter the portal and see if he can find more playing time elsewhere.

Barnes, a redshirt sophomore from Montgomery, becomes the fifth Alabama player to enter the portal. Joining Barnes in the portal are Ja’Corey Brooks, Thaiu Jones-Bell, Isaiah Hastings, and Tyler Buchner.

At 6-foot-5, 315 pounds, Barnes will have plenty of teams knocking at his door for his services.

Barnes announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Alabama football countdown to kickoff: 59 days

We are now just 59 days away from the start of Alabama’s 2023 football season!

The Alabama Crimson Tide will take the field for the 2023 college football season in 59 days, as Middle Tennessee State visits Bryant Denny Stadium on Sept. 2.

Here at Roll Tide Wire, we will be counting down the days until [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and his team take the field.

Today, with just 59 days remaining, we will look at a former Alabama player who wore No. 59, Antione Caldwell.

Caldwell played along the Alabama offensive line from 2005-08. Caldwell was a consensus All-American during the 2008 season and would become a third-round selection in the 2009 NFL draft.

Redshirt sophomore Anquin Barnes Jr. currently wears No. 59 for the Crimson Tide.

Post-spring depth chart projections for Alabama’s defensive line

Projecting Alabama’s defensive line depth chart post-spring!

Now that spring football has officially wrapped up and the 2023 NFL draft is complete, it is time to shift our focus to the offseason.

Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide have a ton of questions marks exiting spring and fans are chomping at the bit for answers.

So as we dive into the dog days of summer, I thought we could take a look, position by position, and project the possible depth chart for the 2023 Alabama football team post-spring.

We have already taken a look at the quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, and the offensive line. Now that we have completed the offensive side, let’s shift our focus to the defensive side of the ball and look at the defensive line.

BREAKING: Alabama lands commitment No. 20 for 2021

Alabama landed commitment No. 20 for the 2021 class on Saturday morning in defensive tackle Tim Keenan, a 3-star prospect out of Birmingham.

Alabama held on to the No. 1 ranking in the 2021 recruiting class for a short period of time, but the Ohio State Buckeyes managed to take it back with a recent commitment from defensive tackle Tyleik Williams.

Well, the Crimson Tide matched on Saturday morning with a commitment from another interior defensive lineman. Tim Keenan, a three-star defensive tackle from Birmingham (Ala.), made his announcement to join Alabama’s 2021 class.

The 6-foot-2, 330-pounder out of Ramsay High School is commitment No. 20 for the Crimson Tide. He joins a strong defensive line class for Nick Saban and company, joining the following prospects:

Keenan is rated as the nation’s No. 362 overall player, No. 22 defensive tackle and No. 9 player from the state of Alabama, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

He is the fourth in-state player to commit to the Crimson Tide, tying the state of Alabama with Texas for the second-most commitments — the state of Florida currently has five players committed to Alabama.

It will be interesting to see where this lands Alabama’s class in relation to Ohio State’s, so keep a close eye on those recruiting rankings today.

Breaking down Alabama’s 2021 commitments: DT Anquin Barnes

Defensive tackle Anquin Barnes is the next man up on Roll Tide Wire’s list breaking down Alabama’s 2021 recruiting class.

After a rocking start, the Alabama Crimson Tide is steadily climbing up the recruiting rankings for the 2021 class. As things stand, that class is 25th (No. 7 in the SEC) according to 247Sports and 29th (No. 8) according to Rivals.com.

With eight commitments, Roll Tide Wire decided to break those pledges down player-by-player for you. Next up on the list is defensive tackle Anquin Barnes out of Montgomery, Alabama.

Anquin Barnes, Defensive Tackle

Height: 6-5 / Weight: 299

High School: Robert E. Lee High School, Montgomery, Alabama

Ranking (247Sports com): 3-star / No. 487 overall / No. 32 DT / No. 17 AL

Ranking (247Sports): 3-star / N/A overall / No. 25 DT / No. 13 AL

Ranking (Rivals): 3-star / N/A overall / No. 33 DT / No. 23 AL

Ranking (ESPN): 4-star / N/A overall / No. 24 DT / No. 13 AL

Analysis: Anquin Barnes is only rated as a three-star prospect according to all the major recruiting services other than ESPN, who has him as a four-star but rated outside the ESPN top 300.

Still, the 6-foot-5, 299-pound defensive tackle out of Montgomery was a target that the Crimson Tide wanted to get, and it’s easy to see why. He’s got the size and length needed to play in multiple spots along Alabama’s 3-4 base defense, but he’s also a good mover that can work his way up and down the line of scrimmage.

With all the success that Nick Saban and company has had bringing in three-star prospects and developing them into top NFL talent (Josh Jacobs, Marcel Dareus and Terrance Cody, for example), don’t be surprised if Barnes is able to work his way into a role at some point down the line — even if it’s not necessarily early in his career.

Alabama lands in-state commitment from 3-star DT

The defensive tackle attended Robert E. Lee high school in Montgomery and decided to stay in state by choosing Alabama over Auburn…

Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide have landed their second commitment for the 2021 class from three-star defensive tackle from Montgomery, Alabama, Anquin Barnes.

Barnes is the second recruit to commit to Alabama as they landed four-star linebacker Deontae Lawson, another in-state recruit.

Barnes was given three stars from 247Sports, but is expected to eventually be bumped up as a four-star recruit.

The defensive tackle attended Robert E. Lee high school in Montgomery and decided to stay in state by choosing Alabama over Auburn. Barnes also received other SEC offers from the University of Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and had interest from Mississippi State.

He made his announcement via Twitter.

It didn’t seem to be a difficult decision for him, as he mentions in his commitment statement that Alabama is a school he’s had his eyes on since he knew about football.

Lawson and Barnes have combined to bring Alabama to be ranked No. 55 in the country for the 2021 recruitment cycle. However, it is still early and the Crimson Tide is expected to climb the rankings rather quickly.
