Walk-on quarterback Gavin Kuld leaving Colorado for transfer portal

Colorado has lost a quarterback to the transfer portal

Following one season with the Colorado Buffaloes, walk-on quarterback Gavin Kuld announced Thursday that he entered his name into the transfer portal.

Kuld’s next program will mark his fifth at the college level. A native of Spencer, North Carolina, he spent time at Monterey Peninsula College, Trinity Valley Community College and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College before joining the Buffs.

Kuld appeared in two games during his lone season at Colorado. In the Buffs’ blowout loss to Washington State, the 6-foot-6, 215-pound junior completed one pass for 22 yards and threw an interception.

Behind starter Shedeur Sanders, Colorado’s QB room has undergone a few changes this offseason. Transfers Destin Wade and Walter Taylor III joined the Buffs in December, and freshman Kasen Weisman found a new home at Florida Atlantic. Ryan Staub, who impressed in last season’s finale against Utah, is well-positioned to be Colorado’s No. 2 QB.

Colorado picks up massive offensive tackle out of transfer portal

Colorado’s offensive line picked up another big body out of the transfer portal

Only two days after entering the college football transfer portal, former Michigan State Spartans offensive tackle Ethan Boyd announced Thursday that he’s headed to the Colorado Buffaloes.

The literal biggest thing that stands out about Boyd is his size. At 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds, he would’ve been the tallest player on the Buffs’ spring football roster. Fellow CU offensive linemen Ben Reznik and Kahlil Benson are both close, however, at 6-foot-6.

Boyd enjoyed somewhat of a breakout season in his third and final year at Michigan State. After playing primarily on special teams in 2021 and redshirting in 2022, the East Lansing native saw time in all 12 games, including three starts at right tackle, for the Spartans this past season.

According to 247Sports’ Stephen Brooks, Boyd was “not seen at MSU’s spring practices during periods open to the media.”

Boyd, a former three-star prospect (per 247Sports), becomes the ninth transfer offensive lineman to join the Buffs this offseason.

Arkansas transfer RJ Johnson commits to Deion Sanders, Colorado Buffaloes

Colorado picked up a commitment from Arkansas transfer RJ Johnson

Colorado’s secondary picked up another intriguing transfer on Wednesday as former Arkansas Razorbacks safety RJ Johnson announced his commitment to the Buffs.

Johnson, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound freshman, played in one game last season for the Razorbacks and did not record any statistics. After taking a redshirt, the McDonough, Georgia native entered the transfer portal on Tuesday.

Johnson played his high school football at Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy, the same program that produced recent Buffs commits Zack Owens and Colton and Brandon Hood.

247Sports rated Johnson as a three-star prospect in the 2023 recruiting class.

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders now owns five defensive back transfers, including former Auburn Tigers cornerback Colton Hood. Herman Smith, D.J. McKinney and Preston Hodge committed to the Buffs earlier this offseason.

Wednesday also saw the Buffs lose two defensive players to the transfer portal: linebacker Victory Johnson and cornerback Isreal Solomon, according to Jake Schwanitz of DNVR Buffs. Both spent only one season at Colorado.

Offensive tackle transfer Zechariah Owens commits to Colorado

Another big offensive lineman has committed to Colorado

One of my takeaways from Colorado’s spring football game on Saturday was how much bigger the offensive and defensive linemen were for the Buffs. Well, Colorado is getting even bigger as Clemson transfer offensive tackle Zechariah “Zack” Owens committed to CU on Sunday.

Nicknamed “Flapjack” for his ability to hand out pancake blocks to defensive linemen, Owens is a massive college athlete. Tipping the scales at 6-foot-6, 375 pounds, he spent one season at Clemson, getting playing time in two games while maintaining four years of eligibility via a redshirt.

Owens appears to have the ability to play either guard or tackle, depending on how he develops as a pass protector.

According to 247Sports, Owens was a four-star prospect and a top-200 player in the 2023 recruiting class. A mauler in the run game, Owens stands as an excellent addition to the Buffs who could develop into a starter for years to come.

Rashad Amos joins Colorado’s running back room

Colorado has rebounded nicely at running back

Just a short time ago, the Colorado Buffaloes had players such as Dylan Edwards and Sy’veon Wilkerson competing for carries at the running back position. But after Ohio State transfer Dallan Hayden joined the fold, Wilkerson and Edwards both entered the portal.

On Friday, the Buffs rebounded nicely by securing the commitment of Miami-Ohio transfer RB Rashad Amon.

Amos has bell-cow written all over him as he’s listed at 6-foot-2 and 234 pounds. Playing for the Redhawks last season, he thundered his way to 1,075 and 13 touchdowns on 210 carries, good for an average of 5.1 yards per carry. A former class of 2020 four-star recruit, Amos spent his first three seasons with the South Carolina Gamecocks, seeing spot action in the SEC.

Given his physical makeup, Amos should thrive in short-yardage situations, especially in the red zone.

Amos joins a running back room that includes Hayden, true freshman Micah Welch and walk-ons Charlie Offerdahl and Christian Sarem.

Amos was committed to Mississippi State before flipping to Colorado on Friday.

Colorado earns commitment from veteran Villanova transfer Wyatt Hummel

Interior offensive lineman Wyatt Hummel is transferring from Villanova to Colorado

Former Villanova offensive lineman Wyatt Hummel announced his commitment to Colorado football on Friday, giving the Buffaloes another experienced body up front.

Hummel spent five seasons at the Football Championship Subdivision level with the Wildcats and played in over 1,000 snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. This past season, the 6-foot-6, 315-pounder saw time at right tackle, right guard and left guard, but he’ll likely continue to be used mostly on the interior.

A former two-star prospect (247Sports) out of Dallas, Hummel joins the Buffs as a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility remaining. After entering the portal in mid-December, he reported offers from San Diego State, UNLV, Duke, Liberty UCF, Colorado State and other Division I programs.

Hummel visited CU earlier this week, according to his X account.

Colorado also received commitments from Miami-Ohio running back transfer Rashad Amos and class of 2025 four-star cornerback Alex Graham on Friday.

Shelomi Sanders finds new home in transfer portal

Shelomi is returning to the SWAC

After one and a half seasons at Colorado, Shelomi Sanders is headed back to the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

The former Jackson State guard announced her commitment to the Alabama A&M Bulldogs on Thursday. Sanders, the daughter of CU football head coach Deion Sanders, played in five games this past season for the Buffs as a walk-on.

Hopefully, Sanders’ move back to the SWAC will allow her to see increased minutes. Alabama A&M went 15-16 last season (10-8 SWAC) but will enter next year led by new head coach Dawn Thornton.

Other Colorado women’s basketball transfers who’ve found new homes include Aaronette Vonleh (Baylor) Mikayla Johnson (Pitt), Ruthie Loomis-Goltl (Idaho) and Brianna McLeod (SMU). Jaylyn Sherrod and Quay Miller have both signed WNBA contracts while Sophie Gerber has retired from basketball to pursue her goal of becoming a surgeon.

In an interview with DNVR Buffs last week, Deion Sanders was asked about his daughter Shelomi entering the transfer portal:

Top-ranked transfer portal DL Derrick Harmon to check out Colorado’s spring game

Four-star transfer Derrick Harmon is reportedly checking out Colorado this weekend

Former Michigan State defensive lineman Derrick Harmon is planning to visit Boulder this weekend for Colorado’s spring football game, according to 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz.

Harmon, the top-ranked uncommitted defensive lineman in the transfer portal (per 247Sports), spent three years at Michigan State before entering the portal on Tuesday. This past season, the 6-foot-5, 320-pound Detriot native tallied a career-high 40 total tackles while starting in 10 of Michigan State’s 12 games. He also had 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble.

With Colorado seemingly set in terms of edge rushers/defensive ends, Harmon would provide some needed help on the inside.

Harmon, a three-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class, is navigating the transfer portal for the second time this offseason. His name was previously in the portal for about three weeks in December.

Zenitz reported that Harmon is set to visit USC on Thursday, Colorado this weekend and Miami on Monday.

Former Colorado tackle Savion Washington heads to Syracuse

Savion Washington has found a new team

Former Colorado football starting right tackle Savion Washington has found himself a new home.

The 6-foot-8, 320-pound transfer announced on social media Tuesday that he has committed to the Syracuse Orange.

Washington started his college career at Kent State before transferring to Colorado last offseason to reunite with former Golden Flashes coaches Sean Lewis and Bill O’Boyle. The Akron, Ohio native played in ten games with the Buffs, including nine starts at right tackle, while battling injuries. Pro Football Focus gave him a 69.4 pass-blocking grade last season in 660 total snaps.

Washington should be competing for a starting offensive line spot at Syracuse, which will be looking to protect new quarterback Kyle McCord.

With Washington officially out of Boulder, Houston transfer Kahlil Benson should have the inside track at right tackle, although Colorado is actively pursuing other targets in the transfer portal.

Colorado target Nikhai Hill-Green nearing transfer decision

Colorado target Nikhai Hill-Green is currently deciding between four schools

Colorado football’s recent transfer portal acquisitions have all been impressive, but the Buffs remain in desperate need of linebackers. During a press conference last week, head coach Deion Sanders made that quite clear, stating that multiple linebackers are “gonna come in.”

Former Charlotte standout Nikhai Hill-Green could be the first. On3’s Pete Nakos reported Wednesday that the 49ers transfer is currently focusing his recruitment on four schools: Colorado, Arkansas, Louisville and Missouri. According to Nakos, Hill-Green plans on announcing his commitment to one of those four programs on Monday.

Hill-Green, who was briefly committed to UCF earlier this offseason, visited Boulder this past weekend and was left impressed.

“The experience with Coach Prime and his staff was a class act,” Hill-Green told BuffsBeat. “Everyone treats each other with respect, everyone cares a lot about the team being as good as possible and Boulder is a unique and special place.”

After spending the first two years of his college career at Michigan, Hill-Green totaled 73 tackles, nine TFLs and two sacks last season at Charlotte.
