Raiders former 7th overall pick EDGE Tyree Wilson enters first minicamp trying to block out expectations

Tyree Wilson has a fellow former 7th overall pick on staff to help him block out expectations

As much as players and coaches like to preach that it doesn’t matter where you’re drafted in the NFL, it does. Certainly great players can come in any round or even undrafted. But where a player is drafted can either be used as motivation or carry the burden of expectations.

For Tyree Wilson, it was the latter that weighed on him as a rookie. His defensive line coach noticed Wilson was affected by the expectations that come with being selected 7th overall in the draft.

“You try to say your mind needs a bubble when you walk in this building but they’re young guys,” said Rob Leonard. “They know what’s being said. It’s the same thing I told Jaelon Phillips when he was a rookie, I said ‘it’s not your fault. God made you this way, you were built this way, and you were drafted seventh overall and expectations come with it.’… But his approach, his mentality is right on par with what you want.”

Though this is Wilson’s second season, it’s his first offseason because he missed OTA’s and minicamp while rehabbing a foot injury. He was considered a raw talent that would take a bit of time to get up to speed even if he’d been healthy. Ultimately it led to Wilson never really finding his way as a rookie.

This season, Wilson has the benefit of a host of mentors on the team. From Maxx Crosby and Christian Wilkins on the field, to former players like head coach Antonio Pierce and pass rush specialist Andre Carter on the staff.

Carter in particular has been able to impart his wisdom as a former 7th overall pick himself who had a 13-year NFL career.

“Obviously he was a high draft pick and you’re trying to do everything right, trying to do everything perfect,” said Carter. “I said I just want you to play football. And what does football incorporate? Playing fast. Well, how do you play fast? By practicing fast. And you see that now incorporating going into his second year and I spoke to him and said ‘look, you know the individual drill work. Now take the individuals to team (sessions). You now understand that you’re working with Wilkins, Maxx Crosby – learn and pick on their brains – Adam Butler who’s been an elite pass rush specialist for six-seven-eight years plus. Those are the guys that you really need to be on their hip. And I feel like it’s paying off for him.”

Should Wilson make the second year leap, he would give the Raiders one of the better edge rush rotations along with Crosby and Malcolm Koonce. As it happens, neither of whom had to worry about living up to high pick expectations as they were both mid-round selections.

Panthers 2024 post-combine meetings tracker

Does anybody need a list of 2024 draft prospects the Panthers have spoken with thus far? We got you.

The 2024 scouting combine is now in the books. 40s have been dashed, 20s have been shuttled, benches have been pressed and vertical and broads have been jumped.

Oh, and there were plenty of talks to be had.

Among the annual activities at the combine are the meetings between prospects and potentially interested teams. And as far as the Carolina Panthers are concerned, we may have to pay a bit more attention to who they’re talking to since their first pick doesn’t pop up until the second round.

So, we’ll help you out.

Here are all the known players—whether they were at the combine, Senior Bowl, Shrine Bowl or even the College Gridiron Showcase—the Panthers have spoken with to this point:

Former longtime NFL EDGE Andre Carter to join Raiders as pass rush specialist

Former longtime NFL EDGE Andre Carter to join Raiders as pass rush specialist

For 13 seasons in the NFL, Andre Carter was a force off the edge. One of those seasons he spent with the Raiders. Now he is expected to rejoin the Silver & Black as pass rush specialist according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

The Cal alum was the seventh overall pick in the 2001 NFL draft by the 49ers. After five seasons in San Francisco, he spent the next five seasons in Washington before finishing out his career with two stints in New England with one season in Oakland in between.

Since he retired from football following the 2013 season, Carter spent a couple seasons as assistant defensive line coach in Miami and a couple seasons as the DL coach with the Jets. Then he went back to the college ranks in 2021 to coach the defensive line for LSU.

The Raiders already have their defensive line coach in Rob Leonard, who is currently in Mobile Alabama coaching linebackers at the Senior Bowl.

Last season it was Matt Edwards who held the title of pass rush specialist for the Raiders, so we will see if he returns to the team and, if so, what his role will be.

Know your foe, Indiana: Which Hoosier players Ohio State needs to focus on

Do any of these Hoosiers make the Buckeyes nervous? #GoBucks

[autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] opens it’s season on the road with a conference matchup against Indiana.

The Hoosiers are most likely going to go through a transitional season. They lost a majority of their top performers either to graduation, (quarterback [autotag]Connor Bazelak[/autotag] and running back [autotag]Shaun Shivers[/autotag]), or transfer, (linebacker [autotag]Dasan McCullough[/autotag]).

Indiana doesn’t reload like the Buckeyes, but that doesn’t mean head coach [autotag]Tom Allen[/autotag]’s crew will completely roll over on Saturday afternoon. There will be more than a few players in the Hoosiers’ home opener that will want to establish themselves this year. Find out five Hoosiers that could potentially give Ohio State some problems this weekend.

Vikings 90-man roster player profile: EDGE Andre Carter II

The Vikings prioritized EDGE Andre Carter II as an UDFA, but is he ready to play as a rookie?

Welcome to the beginning of our 2023 season preview content!

Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at each player on the roster in-depth with backgrounds and how they currently project forward on the Minnesota Vikings roster.

What is the best-case scenario? What is the worst-case scenario? What should we expect from them during the preseason and beyond? We will break all of that down here.

As a staff, all of us at Vikings Wire ranked the entire 90-man roster 1-90 and will be releasing player profiles in reverse order.

Breaking down the Vikings UDFA signings

The Minnesota Vikings brought in 15 UDFA signings. @TheKevinFielder provides an introduction with a brief synopsis of all 15.

While hearing their name called during the NFL Draft is the dream of every college prospect, some don’t get that luxury.

With just 259 draft picks, more players find themselves waiting after Saturday’s conclusion to find their chance. Often forgotten, these undrafted free agents come into the NFL with limited expectations but high hopes.

Over the years, a laundry list of undrafted free agents have carved out long careers, including former Minnesota Vikings Hall of Fame defensive tackle, John Randle.

This season, the Vikings signed 15 players to an undrafted free-agent deal. These players will go through the off-season program, hoping to make the team’s 53-man roster before the regular season begins.

Here are each of those signings.

One edge rusher for the Eagles in every round of 2023 NFL Draft

We’re looking at one edge rusher for the Philadelphia Eagles in every round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

The NFL draft will kick off in less than a week, and as the world descends on Kansas City, the Eagles will look to reload at critical positions.

Philadelphia had one of the NFL’s defensive lines in 2022. Still, Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham return, but Ndamukong Suh, Linval Joseph, Robert Quinn, and Javon Hargrave all exited via free agency.

With the NFL’s top offense returning with a few new additions, Howie Roseman will undoubtedly look to upgrade the defensive line via the NFL Draft.

With the draft just six days away, here’s one edge rusher the Eagles in every round.

Panthers pair new franchise QB with dynamic WR in ESPN’s 3-round mock draft

Along with a new franchise QB, the Panthers come away with a game-breaking WR and a promising pass rusher in ESPN’s latest three-round mock draft.

If the Carolina Panthers are investing the 2023 NFL draft’s first overall pick in a new franchise quarterback—and they are—then they’ll have to invest right back into him. Let’s take the latest mock from ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay as an example of that.

In their new set of projections, the draft guru duo takes turns making selections throughout the first three round of the event. Kiper Jr. just so happened to get each of Carolina’s picks, and starts off with what’s become the likely choice atop the board—University of Alabama’s Bryce Young.

He writes:

I’m doing this mock draft to fill needs — within reason. My No. 1 overall prospect? Defensive tackle Jalen Carter. The Panthers have to get a quarterback, though, and they can get their choice of them at No. 1. Young has superstar potential.

Kiper Jr. then tries to push along that superstar potential at the 39th overall pick, with University of Tennessee wide receiver Jalin Hyatt.

When the Panthers traded away wide receiver DJ Moore to move up to the No. 1 pick, I was worried for the quarterback they were going to draft. Their pass-catcher depth chart was barren. Now, after signing veteran Adam Thielen in free agency and taking a speedy wideout in this projection, Bryce Young would have a much better chance as a rookie.

An Irmo, S.C. native, Hyatt is one of the fastest and most athletic wideouts of the class. The six-foot, 176-pounder registered a 4.40-second 40-yard dash at the combine and, given his game-breaking speed, can be the vertical downfield threat this offense still needs.

As for the third and final pick of the mock for Carolina, Kiper Jr. goes for another need with Army pass rusher Andre Carter II.

Carter has some stiffness, but he looked like a first-rounder in 2021, when he had 15.5 sacks. Last season? He struggled with more attention from blockers, finishing with three sacks. With a 6-foot-6 frame, he is worth a flier as an edge rusher in Round 3. NFL coaching will really help him blossom.

Carter could blossom into the outside backer the Panthers have been looking to pair Pro Bowler Brian Burns with. And if he does, Mel has one heck of a blueprint for Carolina here.
