Raiders to hire former Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin as senior offensive assistant

Antonio Pierce brings on Joe Philbin as senior offensive assistant, adding another former head coach to his ranks

Another veteran NFL coach and former head coach is joining Antonio Pierce’s staff in Las Vegas. Former Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin is coming aboard the Raiders staff as a senior offensive assistant.

Philbin last coached in the NFL with the Cowboys where he had been the team’s offensive line coach for three seasons.

He entered the NFL in 2003 with the Packers, working his way up to offensive coordinator in 2007 and spent five seasons in that role before taking the head coaching job in Miami.

Philbin spent four seasons from 2012-15 as the head coach of the Dolphins. Since then he has had stints as the offensive line coach with the Colts and Cowboys with a single season as the OC back in Green Bay in between.

All told, Philbin brings two decades of NFL coaching experience into the building.

Pierce is surrounding himself with veteran coaching minds like Philbin and Marvin Lewis, who is a defensive minded coach and the team’s assistant head coach.

Raiders hire former Broncos, 49ers assistant Rich Scangarello as QB coach

Former Broncos OC, 49ers QB coah=ch Rich Scangarello hired as Raiders QB coach

The Raiders continue filling out their coaching staff. New offensive coordinator Luke Getsy has named his QB coach. He is former 49ers QB coach and Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello.

It’s an interesting side note that Scangarello was recently helping to prepare top draft prospect Caleb Williams. Considering the Raiders are in the market for a quarterback and could very well look to jump up in the draft to get one. Though if they want Williams, it would likely mean they’d have to trade all the way from 13 to number one overall.

Scangarello’s first job as a QB coach in the NFL came with the 49ers in in 2017-18. Since then he’s had one-year stints as offensive coordinator with the Broncos in 2019, a senior assistant with the Eagles in 2020, back as a QB coach with the 49ers in 2021, and last season as the OC and QB coach at Kentucky.

It’s tough to really judge Scangarello by his track record. Considering his quarterbacks as either a QB coach or OC have been Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Mullens, Jimmy G again, Joe Flacco, Drew Lock, and Brandon Allen.

Raiders to hire former NFL RB Carnell ‘Cadillac’ Williams to be running backs coach

Former NFL RB Cadillac Williams to be Raiders running back coach

A few weeks ago it was former NFL RB DeShaun Foster who was set to take the running backs coach job in Las Vegas. But Foster got the opportunity to be head coach at UCLA and took it. So, now it’s another former NFL running back who is getting the Raiders RB coach job. Former Buccaneers first round pick Carnell ‘Cadillac’ Williams.

Jon Gruden made the Auburn product the fifth overall pick by the Buccaneers in the 2005 draft. He played seven NFL seasons, six in Tampa and the final season with the Rams.

The past five years Williams has been the running backs coach at his alma mater.

In 2022, he was named the interim head coach after the firing of Bryan Harsin, Williams went 2-2 over the final four games of that season and was retained as associate head coach and running backs coach by Hugh Freeze when he was brought on as head coach last season. Williams resigned after the season.

Raiders to hire former 49ers assistant James Cregg to coach offensive line

Raiders snatch a 49ers assistant, hiring Asst OL James Cregg to be their OL coach

For the first time this offseason, the Raiders actually have hired more offensive coaches than they had decommit. With Luke Getsy as the team’s new offensive coordinator, his first hire is James Cregg to be offensive line coach.

Cregg comes over from the San Francisco 49ers where he was the assistant offensive line coach the past two seasons. This is his first ever job as an offensive line coach at the NFL level.

His first NFL job came in 2007 when he was the Raiders assistant offensive line coach for two seasons. He has also served as an assistant OL coach for the Broncos and Chargers and had stints as OL coach at Tennessee, USC, and LSU.

Former longtime NFL EDGE Andre Carter to join Raiders as pass rush specialist

Former longtime NFL EDGE Andre Carter to join Raiders as pass rush specialist

For 13 seasons in the NFL, Andre Carter was a force off the edge. One of those seasons he spent with the Raiders. Now he is expected to rejoin the Silver & Black as pass rush specialist according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

The Cal alum was the seventh overall pick in the 2001 NFL draft by the 49ers. After five seasons in San Francisco, he spent the next five seasons in Washington before finishing out his career with two stints in New England with one season in Oakland in between.

Since he retired from football following the 2013 season, Carter spent a couple seasons as assistant defensive line coach in Miami and a couple seasons as the DL coach with the Jets. Then he went back to the college ranks in 2021 to coach the defensive line for LSU.

The Raiders already have their defensive line coach in Rob Leonard, who is currently in Mobile Alabama coaching linebackers at the Senior Bowl.

Last season it was Matt Edwards who held the title of pass rush specialist for the Raiders, so we will see if he returns to the team and, if so, what his role will be.

Raiders to hire Marvin Lewis as assistant head coach

Raiders to hire Marvis Lewis as assistant head coach

Multiple reports out right now are saying Antonio Pierce will be naming longtime former NFL head coach Marvin Lewis is assistant head coach.

On the same day the news broke that the Raiders are expected to name former Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury their offensive coordinator, they have landed another former head coach for Pierce’s staff.

The 65-year-old Lewis spent 16 years (!) as the head coach of the Bengals, his last season being in 2018. He had a career winning record of 131-122 in Cincinnati.

Prior to that he was a defensive coordinator in Baltimore for six years an Washington for one year.

Ten times in his career as either a DC or a head coach his team had a defense ranked in the top ten. He was an advisor for the Raiders late last season when they had the league’s best defense over the final nine games.

Raiders DC Patrick Graham could stick around with all HC jobs he interviewed for now filled

Raiders DC Patrick Graham could stick around with all HC jobs he interviewed for now filled

The only part of the Raiders that was really working this season was the defense. That was especially true once head coach Josh McDaniels was fired and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham was given the chance to do things his way.

Over the final nine games of this season, Graham led the best defense in the league.

This success put him on the radar for teams who were looking for new head coaches this offseason.

There were reports of two teams that interviewed Patrick Graham ifor their head coach opening — the Chargers and Seahawks.

The Chargers had their sights set on Jim Harbaugh and got him. The Seahawks — who even called Graham back for a second interview — took longer to fill the job.

Today, they got their man.

The Seahawks named former Baltimore Ravens DC Mike MacDonald their new head coach.

MacDonald led the best defense in the league over the entire season in Baltimore. So, the Seahawks clearly had a type. It was just a matter of waiting for the Ravens to finish with the playoffs, which they did last Sunday when they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game.

This leaves just one remaining head coach opening in the NFL. That’s in Washington where they had their sights set on Lions OC Ben Johnson before he said ‘thanks, but no thanks’ and decided to run it back in Detroit after a run to the NFC Championship game.

What this could mean for the Raiders and Patrick Graham is that his best option is to stick around with head coach Antonio Pierce and see if they can continue to have one of the league’s top defenses next season.

That’s certainly what the Raiders are hoping is the case.

Raiders DL coach Rob Leonard joins coaching staff at Senior Bowl

Raiders DL coach Rob Leonard joins coaching staff at Senior Bowl

Each year you see players from the senior bowl who go to teams that had coaches on staff to get up close and personal looks at them. The Raiders have one of their coaches on hand in Mobile as well. They sent defensive line coach Rob Leonard there to coach linebackers as Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports.

Leonard coached the Raiders defensive line last season. Prior to that he had coached either outside linebackers or defensive linemen since 2017.

As the Raiders defensive line coach last season, he saw the emergence of Malcolm Koonce along with Maxx Crosby’s best season as a pro.

Raiders request interview with Buccaneers QB coach Thad Lewis

Raiders request interview with Buccaneers QB coach Thad Lewis

The success of the Buccaneers this season has caused a lot of other teams to take notice. And it’s leading to the expected poaching of their coaches. Mostly from the offensive side of the ball, where they shocked the NFL with journeyman Baker Mayfield at quarterback, making it all the way to the Divisional Round before just falling short to a tough Lions team.

Friday the Panthers nabbed Bucs OC Dave Canales as their new head coach. A short time later, news broke via the Tampa Bay Times that the Raiders have requested an interview with QB coach Thad Lewis.

The Raiders have several interviews lined up this week to fill their offensive coordinator position on the staff after a disappointing season under former head coach Josh McDaniels, OC Mick Lombardi, and then interim OC Bo Hardegree.

And like many Raiders hires of late — including head coach Antonio Pierce — Lewis is a former NFL player.

While the Bucs offense was just 20th in points and 23rd in yards, Mayfield had easily his best season, passing for 4044 yards with 28 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions. You can see how a lot of teams would want that for their quarterbacks in their offense.
