Is Ohio State getting snubbed in the polls?

We had our first look at the AP and Amway Coaches polls since the Big Ten came back. Is Ohio State and getting snubbed? It’s complicated.

One of the conversations over the weekend included the major college football polls and Big Ten teams — specifically Ohio State. Why were the Buckeyes were not in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll after it was announced the conference was back in the fray? If not now, when? And where would Ohio State be included when the Big Ten will presumably be eligible during the next release?

It befuddled many when the Buckeyes and their conference brethren were left out. Then there was the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY. It did include OSU, but down at No. 10. That’s a far cry from the preseason No. 2 ranking it had when we last saw Ohio State before the Big Ten season was shelved amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

First things first. Let’s debunk the MIA status when it comes to the AP Poll. Sure, the Buckeyes are undoubtedly one of the best 25 teams in the nation. However, since they have not played a game yet, and won’t until October 24, the AP decided to wait until next week to have the Big Ten teams eligible. No harm, no foul. We’ll see where the Buckeyes land next Sunday before we bring down the ax of judgment.

Now, about the Amway Coaches Poll. While seeing Ohio State at No. 10 is a bit curious to say the least, there’s still the little problem of OSU not playing a game for another month and a shortened eight-game regular-season. It’s apples to oranges, or buckeyes to well — whatever mascot, fruit, or namesake you want to pick.

But wait, what about the SEC? It hasn’t played any games either. Well, those teams start this week, so while the conference hasn’t played any games yet either, a few missed games isn’t quite the same as a month of missed games. The pollsters are including the Big Ten but are likely taking a wait and see approach until some things smooth out a bit.

So for a few weeks we probable we won’t see the Buckeyes or any Big Ten team up where we would expect in the major polls. Until voters know games are played, or they get closer to starting, there are just too many unknowns. Really, it is the only fair way to do it, as much as we all hate seeing it.

But here’s the good news. The AP and Amway Coaches Poll are just fodder anyways. The poll that really matters is the College Football Playoff rankings and those don’t come out until November 17. By that time, Ohio State will have played four games. That’s enough for the CFP Committeed to get some gauge on the Buckeyes. If they look fantastic, the whole “four best teams” thing comes into play.

So hang in there. After all, it is 2020, and this is par for the course.

New Amway Coaches Poll drops, Big Ten included after one week absence

In the latest Amway Coaches Poll, Big Ten teams were brought back in after a one-week absence.

[jwplayer W4ONB6vg]

Last week, the Big Ten was left out of the Amway Coaches Poll while their season was still in limbo. This week, after the Big Ten season was announced to return in late October, the Big Ten was added back to the poll. No surprise here, but Michigan State did not make the top 25. Expectations aren’t that high for Mel Tucker and his squad so they will have a lot to prove once the season kicks off.

While the Big Ten was reintroduced to the poll this week, they didn’t exactly have the best showing in this week’s poll, likely because no games have been played yet in the conference. The highest ranked Big Ten team was Ohio State at No. 10, which seems low for a team that should be in the National Championship picture.

The Florida Gators remain just on the outside looking in at No. 6, while the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Auburn Tigers, Texas Longhorns and Ohio State Buckeyes top off the top-10.

By that count, the Southeastern Conference has half of the top-10 teams in the poll, with the Texas A&M Aggies at No. 11 and Tennessee Volunteers at No. 21 to cap off the SEC schools in the top-25. The Kentucky Wildcats had been No. 20 in the previous poll but dropped out this week without playing.

New Amway Poll is out, Ohio State well below preseason expectations

Ohio State is in a surprising spot in the latest ranking of the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY. Time to prove the coaches wrong.

The newest version of Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY is out and Ohio State has a beef. Remember when the preseason poll came out, OSU was ranked No. 2. Now, despite not playing any games, and despite others above them still not playing a game (SEC), the Buckeyes make an appearance back in the poll at … wait for it … No. 10.

Okay?

It really makes no sense. If Ohio State is the same team it was before it dropped out (spoiler — it is), then why have some voters changed their mind and treated the Buckeyes as a less superior team. And that’s with the news that both Shaun Wade and Wyatt Davis are looking to rejoin the team after initially opting out.

Maybe some of the coaches didn’t get the memo that the Big Ten is playing again. Or maybe they are operating under wait and see mode.

Anyway, onward and upward as they say. And really, it doesn’t matter much at this point anyway.

Clemson is No. 1, followed by Alabama at No. 2, and a tie for third between Oklahoma and Georgia. LSU, Florida, Notre Dame, Auburn, Texas, and the Buckeyes round out the top ten.

Here’s a look at the complete poll

Irish steady as Big Ten is back in Amway Coaches Poll

The newest Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports was released, the Irish find themselves holding steady after a blowout win on Saturday.

Doesn’t it feel nice waking up after the Irish demolished South Florida to a tune of 52-0? You bet your ass it does, but as we all prepare to watch Notre Dame alum getting paid to play, in the back of our minds were wondering how the polls will react to the Big Ten rejoining fall football.

The Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports gave the Irish some hope, as our midwestern neighbors once again shook things up. Dropping 52 on South Florida didn’t impress the coaches enough though, as the Irish didn’t see change at all from their No. 7 ranking.

Clemson remained at the top spot, while Miami made a big jump to No. 14. The U is “back,” although we have seen this proclamation before. Have them beat a top 10 team handily, then we can talk. Until then the Hurricanes’ will ride high on the prime time win over then No. 16 Louisville, who dropped out of the poll entirely.

The Big Ten as a group was ranked again, although their top team, Ohio State, was just No. 10 after holding a preseason rankings of No. 2. Interesting take by the coaches to include them when their first game won’t happen for over a month.

Here is the rest of the coaches poll, with ACC teams in bold and last weeks ranking in parentheses.

3 Oklahoma (3)

Week 3 Amway Coaches Poll: Texas drops one spot, Big Ten added back

Going into Big 12 play, Texas will be ranked No. 9 in the Coaches Poll. Auburn has yet to play a game but jump Texas in the latest poll.

After getting a dominant win against UTEP in Week 2, Texas had a bye week before Big 12 plays begins. Only one Power Five conference, the ACC, had a full slate of games.

Going into the Texas Tech matchup, Texas will be ranked No. 9 in the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. Despite the fact that Auburn has yet to play a game, they jumped Texas in the latest poll.

As for the rest of the Big 12, Oklahoma stays put at No. 3. Oklahoma State fell six spots to No. 18 after a nervy performance against Tulsa. Baylor, who was No. 24, fell out of the top 25.

Thanks Pac-12 not playing football this season, teams from the conference have been left out of the poll. With the Big Ten restart coming on Oct. 24, they are back ranked in the coaches poll.

Alabama stays at No. 2 in latest Amway Coaches Poll

Alabama stayed at No. 2 in the Amway Coaches Poll despite the Big Ten’s return to action. Ohio State surprisingly checked in at No. 10.

The Alabama Crimson Tide stayed put at No. 2 in the latest Amway Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY Sports, following Week 2 of college football action.

The news isn’t overly shocking, but it is shocking that the return of the Big Ten, and Ohio State in particular, didn’t automatically equate to those top 25 teams assuming the spots they were originally given.

For example, the Buckeyes ranked No. 2 in the original preseason Amway Coaches Poll back in early August, but with the return, they’re only sitting at No. 10.

Below is how the rest of the poll shook out following the Big Ten’s decision and Week 2 of college football.

1. Clemson
2. Alabama
3. Oklahoma
4. Georgia
5. LSU
6. Florida
7. Notre Dame
8. Auburn
9. Texas
10. Ohio State
11. Texas A&M
12. North Carolina
13. Penn State
14. Miami
15. UCF
16. Cincinnati
17. Wisconsin
18. Oklahoma State
19. Michigan
20. Memphis
21. Tennessee
22. Minnesota
23. BYU
24. Virginia Tech
25. UL-Lafayette

There were seven SEC teams who made the top 25 following the Big Ten, Pac-12 drop off.

Gators News: September 14, 2020

The second week of college football is officially complete, bringing Florida closer to its opening weekend coming up at the end of the month

[jwplayer Zplm1Sf4]

The second week of college football is officially complete, bringing the Gator Nation closer to its opening weekend coming up at the end of the month. Until then, ACC and Big 12 action will have to suffice for Florida’s fans in the meantime.

At the top of the news, the first regular-season Amway Coaches Poll of 2020 reflects more turnover than usual from the preseason rankings, even though there haven’t yet been many upsets in the reduced schedule. Other than Clemson at the head of the pack, the rest of the top 10 is dominated by the SEC.

Here in Florida, images of fans not wearing masks at Florida State football’s home opener on Saturday draw criticism from the fans and media alike. It wasn’t the look college administrators and politicians probably wanted to see as the deadly coronavirus pandemic continues to disrupt lives.

Finally, Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade announced in a tweet Monday morning that he was declaring for the NFL draft, opting out of a postponed football season in the Big Ten. Wade became the Buckeyes’ second player in four days to forgo a potential season this fall to begin training for the draft, following offensive lineman Wyatt Davis.
