Top 10 Notre Dame men’s basketball players according to ChatGPT

Let’s see what AI knows about Irish men’s hoops.

For the past few months, I’ve heard quite a bit about the AI information bot known as ChatGPT. It was the subject of an episode during this past season of “South Park”. More importantly, I’ve heard how it’s such a game-changer that writing jobs are done for. We’ll see about that as I’m not too worried about it, but then again, I’m sure newspaper employees said the same thing about the internet in the mid-1990s.

When our editor Nick Shepkowski decided to ask ChatGPT what it thought Notre Dame’s 10 best football players were, I decided to follow suit and ask the same question but for the 10 best men’s basketball players instead. Keep in mind that even the bot knows this list is subjective:

“Please note that there are many other outstanding players who have played for Notre Dame and could also be included on this list.”

So keep that in mind as you go over the following list, which also includes ChatGPT’s description of each player:

The top NBA performances by a rookie player on Christmas Day

From LeBron James to Wilt Chamberlain, Rookie Wire took a look at some of the best Christmas Day performances by first-year players.

The 2022-23 season marks the 75th edition of the NBA on Christmas Day with five games set to tip off on Sunday across ABC and ESPN in the United States.

LeBron James is poised to play in his 17th game on Christmas Day, which will surpass Kobe Bryant for the most appearances in history. James is also the all-time leader in points (422), field goals (150) and 3-pointers (28). He is tied with Dwyane Wade for the most wins with 10.

Players have put up some incredible performances over the years in the annual showcase. Several of the best to ever play own various career records on the holiday, including Bill Russell (rebounds), Oscar Robertson (assists), Shaquille O’Neal (blocks) and Russell Westbrook (steals).

Some have even had great efforts in their rookie seasons.

Rookie Wire sifted through the archives and took a look at some of the biggest performances by a rookie player on Christmas Day, several of which would go on to make the Hall of Fame.

Notre Dame legend Adrian Dantley snubbed for NBA 75th Anniversary Team

Did the NBA get this wrong?

It’s been 75 years since the NBA tipped off, so the league is going all out in celebrating. Just as it did for its 50th anniversary, the NBA has released a list of its best players, one for each year of its existence. With the list out, the debate about who should have made the cut but didn’t began. One graphic from “Inside the NBA” listed a name familiar to longtime Notre Dame fans:

Yes, Adrian Dantley had quite the NBA career after leaving Notre Dame as the program’s second-leading scorer and a two-time first-team All-American. It was good enough that he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. In fact, he’s the only Hall of Famer to play in the NBA after going through South Bend.

Here are some of his NBA achievements over a 15-year career:

  • 1977 Rookie of the Year
  • Six-time All-Star
  • Two-time scoring champion
  • Two-time All-NBA Second Team member
  • 10th all-time in free throws (6,832)
  • 18th all-time in scoring average (24.3)
  • 29th all-time in points scored (23,177)
  • 35th all-time in field-goal percentage (.540)

So yeah, Dantley had the accolades to merit consideration. Maybe a championship would have put him over the top? However, it’s more likely that the competition just had too many achievements for him to compare to. He’ll have to settle for being one of the players many feel should have listed among the best of the best.

Notre Dame athletes who have won medals at the Summer Olympics

These Notre Dame products have done well on sports’ biggest stage.

After being delayed by one year, the 2020 Olympic Games are underway in Tokyo. Notre Dame has a record 20 current and former student-athletes seeking that coveted gold medal in this competition and the Paralympics. You can keep track of all of them here. With all of those names, the chances of at least one of them winning any medal are extremely high.

Notre Dame’s Olympic history goes back to 1912. While not every Olympian to go through South Bend has won a medal, quite a few of them have done just that. A few even won medals while representing countries other than the U.S. It’s a testament to how Notre Dame leaves no stone unturned when it comes to recruiting talent for its athletic program.

As we prepare to cheer on this year’s Olympians who have donned the Irish uniform, let’s look back at those who have made it to the podium in previous summer competitions:

“I was a sophomore (at Mackin) when he …

“I was a sophomore (at Mackin) when he was a senior, and I went to every game,” said Butch McAdams, the longtime head coach at Maret, and a local radio and podcast host for nearly 30 years. “Austin was a four-year varsity player. He was just special from the very beginning. He was like a perimeter version of AD (fellow local great Adrian Dantley) – there was no shake and bake, no crossovers. He was just so efficient, and he could shoot the lights out. I think the reason you don’t hear it is that, unfortunately, he had a rash of injuries at the NBA, and couldn’t reach his full potential at the NBA level as he did in high school and college … if he were playing in the era of the 3-point arc, I think you could conservatively – conservatively – add another 15 points (per game) to his average.”

This millennium, Prince George’s …

This millennium, Prince George’s County, Maryland — a relatively small, mostly African American enclave just east of Washington D.C. — has sent more than 25 players to the NBA. That collection of talent has included one No. 1 overall pick and three players selected second overall; an unusual occurrence that can’t be limited to or be explained by one common link. “Basketball County: It’s In the Water,” is a documentary that debuts Friday on Showtime and attempts to break down what makes PG County the home for so much basketball talent, including Oladipo, Cook, Michael Beasley, Markelle Fultz, Adrian Dantley, Jeff Green, Marissa Coleman, the late Len Bias and, of course, the most accomplished player to emerge from the area, Kevin Durant.

How much did Michael Jordan outscore fellow NBA legends in their matchups?

Even if not the top scorer in NBA history, Michael Jordan is probably the best scorer we’ve seen on a basketball court. It was not very often that an opponent (or a teammate) put more points on the board than him.

Actually, only one player outscored MJ in their matchups during his Chicago years. And then he did it again when His Airness was a member of the Wizards…
