Notre Dame suffers first loss on Maryland buzzer-beater

That was gut-wrenching.

There are ways to pick up your first loss of the season that don’t break your heart. That won’t be the case for this year’s Notre Dame squad thanks to how its final ACC-Big Ten Challenge game ended. No. 20 Maryland’s Diamond Miller scored the final two of her game-high 31 points on a pull-up jumper near the left elbow off a screen just as time expired. The basket gave the Terrapins a 74-72 win and prompted Miller to shush the Purcell Pavilion crowd.

It was a game that went back and forth until the very end. [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag] completed a three-point play with 48 seconds left to give the No. 7 Irish (6-1) a 70-69 lead. Miller immediately followed that with a basket in the paint, prompting [autotag]Niele Ivey[/autotag] to call a timeout. After the huddle broke, Miles missed a layup that [autotag]Lauren Ebo[/autotag] couldn’t rebound cleanly, and the Terrapins (7-2) called a timeout to maintain possession.

Miller was fouled after the subsequent inbound pass, but she only was able to split two free throws. Ivey called her final timeout to draw up a play to tie the game or potentially give the Irish the lead. Miles inbounded the ball and found a wide-open [autotag]Sonia Citron[/autotag] for a game-tying layup. The Terrapins took a timeout after that, setting the stage for Miller’s heroics.

Miller did a lot more than hit the game-winner at the buzzer. In addition to being the game’s leading scorer, she had a game-high 12 rebounds and a team-high five assists. Only Shyann Sellers joined Miller in double-digit scoring with 17 points.

Citron completed a double-double for the Irish with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Miles scored 14 and had a game-high seven assists. [autotag]Kylee Watson[/autotag] scored 10 and blocked three shots.

Notre Dame football: 5 things to know for Dec. 1, 2022

It’s always a good day when you beat Michigan State the night before!

And just like that you’ll never get to witness another game in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge again!  If you didn’t stay up with it last night, Notre Dame routed No. 20 Michigan State to move to 6-1 on the young basketball season.  It was a night that [autotag]Cormac Ryan[/autotag] won’t soon forget as he was 6-of-7 from beyond the arc and led all scorers with 23 points.

So the men’s basketball team dominated a ranked opponent last night and the unbeaten women’s squad hosts No. 20 Maryland tonight.  Those and a few other stories and ideas headline your five things to know for December 1, 2022!

Notre Dame Izzowns No. 20 Michigan State, 70-52

The Irish Izzowned Sparty on Wednesday night

This is the same Notre Dame team that last time out fell to St. Bonaventure by a dozen, but welcome to college basketball.  Notre Dame closed out their portion of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge with a home drubbing of No. 20 Michigan State, 70-52 on Wednesday.  Cormac Ryan was a force for the Irish as he was 6 of 7 from beyond the arc leading all scorers with 23 points.

Behind Ryan’s huge first half where he scored 20 of those 23 points, Notre Dame burst out to a 42-24 lead at the break.  It was also an incredibly clean game by the Irish as they didn’t commit a turnover until 17 minutes into the contest.  JJ Starling added 14 points and Dane Goodwin scored 12 for Notre Dame.

The win moves Notre Dame to 6-1 on the year as the Irish get a preemptive start to their ACC season as they welcome 3-4 Syracuse to town this Saturday.  Michigan State falls to 5-3 on the year and is now just 2-2 over their last four.

Notre Dame’s win was the ACC’s eighth in this year’s challenge which clinched the conference bragging rights for good as the series is being done away starting next year.  ACC teams will instead challenge SEC opponents.

Five takeaways from Notre Dame’s blowout win over Michigan State

The Irish needed this one and got it.

Notre Dame was in search of its first quality win of the season. It needed one after a disappointing loss to St. Bonaventure that it never really was in. As it turned out, playing a shorthanded No. 20 Michigan State team in the final ACC-Big Ten Challenge was just what the doctor ordered as the Irish won, 70-52, to clinch the challenge for the ACC. In fact, they never trailed aside from the Spartans scoring the game’s first basket.

The Irish (6-1) jumped out to a big lead in the first half and never looked back. Although there wasn’t as much offense in the second half, there was just enough for the Irish to maintain their dominance over the Spartans (5-3), who were missing Jaden Akins and Malik Hall.

Here are five takeaways from this big victory:

Photos from last Notre Dame-Michigan State game at Purcell Pavilion

This was a memorable game in a memorable season.

As Notre Dame prepares to welcome Michigan State to Purcell Pavilion, one can’t help but think of the last time these programs met there. It was the 2014 ACC-Big Ten Challenge, and fans filled the seats to witness the first meeting between the teams since Magic Johnson’s Spartans eliminated the Irish in the 1979 NCAA Tournament en route to the national title. Also helping was the great reputation Tom Izzo had long established by then.

The game lived up to the billing as the Irish won a 79-78 overtime thriller. [autotag]Jerian Grant[/autotag] played the entire game, scoring a career-high 27 points and dishing out six assists. [autotag]Demetrius Jackson[/autotag]’s 22 points also set a career high, though he would pass that mark five times after this game. The Irish also got 11 points apiece from [autotag]Pat Connaughton[/autotag] and [autotag]Steve Vasturia[/autotag].

Before these programs battle in the final ACC-Big Ten Challenge in 2022,  take a look back at this memorable 2014 contest. Don’t miss the rather festive photo of [autotag]Digger Phelps[/autotag] while you do:

Notre Dame’s all-time records against SEC programs

A preview of programs the Irish could be playing in the distant future.

In case you haven’t heard, the ACC-Big Ten Challenge is going away after this week. It will be replaced with the ACC-SEC Challenge beginning in 2023. Notre Dame will get a preview of the yearly meeting with the conference when it faces Georgia on Dec. 18 in Atlanta. That will be it for the two sides this season unless they cross paths again in the postseason.

With this new event, it only makes sense to see how the Irish have stacked up against the SEC. Against current members, they have an all-time record of 47-66. That does not include the following programs that they never have played: Auburn, Florida and Mississippi State. Here’s how the Irish have done when facing everyone else, including future conference members Texas and Oklahoma:

ACC-SEC Challenge replacing ACC-Big Ten Challenge in 2023

Time for a new challenge.

If you’re a fan of the annual ACC-Big Ten Challenge, make sure you enjoy every bit of it this year. That’s because beginning in 2023-24, the annual event will be replaced by the ACC-SEC Challenge. The event also is replacing the SEC-Big 12 Challenge.

Although the ACC-Big Ten Challenge has been around for 23 years, Notre Dame only has experienced since joining the ACC a decade ago. The men have a 4-5 all-time record in the event and can break even if they beat Michigan State on Wednesday. The women have fared much better at 7-1 and will face Maryland on Thursday.

It’s a shame to see an event college basketball fans have become used to for a generation go away, but at least the ACC has partnered with another power conference in which to do a yearly battle. Hopefully, this new challenge with the SEC lasts at least as long. Any interconference rivalry is exciting, and this will create new memories and opportunities for all schools involved.

Notre Dame to play Maryland in ACC/Big Ten Challenge

Looking forward to this matchup?

Notre Dame will welcome Maryland to Purcell Pavilion this upcoming season for the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge. It should be one of the better matchups in this year’s iteration as both programs are coming off Sweet 16 appearances. The Irish have the slimmest of leads in the all-time series, 5-4. The teams last met during a 92-victory in the 2014 edition of this event.

The Irish have a 7-1 all-time record in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. A win in this game, which will be played Dec. 1, would make the Terrapins the second program they’ve beaten twice in this event alongside Iowa. The other Big Ten opponents to fall to the Irish are Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State.

While this game is worth looking forward to, it will be far from the all-time series’ highest stakes. Twice, the Irish have downed the Terrapins in the NCAA Tournament. The first time happened in the 2012 regional finals, and the second during the 2014 national semifinals.

2022 ACC/Big Ten Challenge matchups announced

Besides the one involving the Irish, which game most interests you?

Few things draw more excitement during the early part of the college basketball season than the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Every team from one power conference matches up against one from the other. Whether the opponent is good or bad, it also is nice for these teams to see how well they do against a similar level of competition. It definitely is one of the major tuneups for when the conference schedule begins.

The 2022 matchups have been announced, and the ACC would like to change its luck. The conference won this series, which began in 1999, in each of its first 10 seasons. Since then, its only wins have come in 2016 and 2017, the latter of which saw it post a series-best 11-3 record. The Big Ten has had the upper hand in each of the past three years, so a changing of the guard is overdue.

Here are the matchups for this year’s edition:
