Rams’ red-zone woes give Lions 24-23 Wild Card win

The Lions were 3-for-3 in the red zone while the Rams went 0-for-3, leading to the Lions’ 24-23 win.

The Detroit Lions have won a playoff game for the first time in over 30 years. In what was a very evenly played game, the Lions beat the Los Angeles Rams 24-23 at Ford Field in Detroit Sunday night.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford threw two touchdown passes, finished with 367 passing yards and didn’t turn the ball over, and the Rams outgained the Lions 425-334, but the Rams went 0-for-3 in the red zone, settling for three field goals, while the Lions scored touchdowns on all three red-zone trips.

They took a 14-3 first-quarter lead behind a pair of rushing touchdowns.

Lions quarterback was 22-for-27 passing for 277 yards and a touchdown in the win over his former team.

The Lions will host the winner of the Eagles-Buccaneers game next Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.

On this day: Maxwell, McHale drafts; Clyde, Shannon born; Brightman passes; G3 2008 Finals

On this day, Boston drafted Cedric Maxwell and Kevin McHale, Earl Shannon and Ben Clyde were born, Al Brightman passed, and Game 3 of the 2008 NBA Finals was lost.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team drafted small forward Cedric Maxwell out of UNC Charlotte with the 12th overall pick of the 1977 NBA draft, their sole selection of note.

Maxwell would play eight seasons for the Celtics, averaging 13.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, and would win two championships with Boston in that stretch (in 1981 and 1984), winning Finals MVP in 1984. After losing his starting role to forward Kevin McHale after an injury, the North Carolina native would be traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for legendary sixth man center Bill Walton.

Maxwell maintains a close relationship with the Celtics and their fans to this day, hosting an eponymous podcast and making frequent appearances on local sports media.

Vikings vs. Bills: First injury report has four names

The Vikings could be without three players on Sunday

The Minnesota Vikings are getting ready to face the Buffalo Bills in New York on Sunday afternoon. The game could be marred by injuries as Bills quarterback Josh Allen has his status up in the air.

For the Vikings, they had four players on their first injury report with only one of them seeing any practice time.

Dalvin Tomlinson and Cameron Dantzler are not surprises to see not practicing. Tomlinson missed Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders and Dantzler left the game against the Commanders and was seen in a walking boot.

Garrett Bradbury left the game in the second quarter with an ankle injury but did return at the start of the third quarter.

Adam Thielen ended up limited with an ankle injury. He did appear to get banged up against the Commanders but this is something to monitor.

Tomorrow’s injury report will give us more information.

Twitter reacts to Brian Kelly’s debut loss at LSU

OK, how we doing, @lsutigerswire?

The 2021 football season started for Brian Kelly with his highly ranked Notre Dame team surviving a scare against Florida State and moving to 1-0 with an overtime victory.

A year later Kelly again opened the season against Florida State but this time it was in his debut as LSU’s head coach in a game played in the Louisiana Superdome.

And this time Kelly wasn’t able to sneak away with a victory, with his Tigers instead falling 24-23.

As you can probably expect, a lot of Notre Dame fans had the ex-girlfriend thing going on with Kelly’s LSU debut and kept an eye on the game, many even feeling the need to take to social media during it.  Here are some of the best Twitter reaction to Kelly’s debut loss with the Bayou Bengals.

Notre Dame to renew rivalry with Boston College

Go Irish, beat Eagles

Notre Dame will close out the non conference portion of its schedule by playing host to Boston College at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at Compton Family Ice Arena in a makeup game after the teams’ first semester meeting was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the BC program.

The Fighting Irish are 7-2-0 in non conference play this season and 9-4-0 at Compton Family Ice Arena.

Notre Dame is coming off a two-game road series at Ohio State (Jan. 14-15), where it took game one in overtime, 3-2, before falling in game two, 4-1.

Spencer Stastney had that overtime game winner for his fourth goal of the season, while Landon Slaggert figured in all the scoring with a goal and two assists for a career-high three points.

The Eagles were most recently swept in a home-and-home series with New Hampshire (Jan. 14-15), losing game one on the road, 3-2, before dropping game two at home, 5-2.

The game against the Eagles will close out a busy start to the second half for Notre Dame, including seven games in the first 19 games of January.

Max Ellis leads the Irish with a career-best 24 points on a team-high 14 goals and 10 assists.  Ellis’ 14 goals rank tied for seventh in the country (tied for second in the Big Ten).

Ellis and Cam Burke are tied for the NCAA lead with two shorthanded goals this season.

Burke and Ryder Rolston lead the Irish with three game-winning goal apiece.

Burke now ranks second on the Irish with eight goals (he had seven goals in his previous three seasons combined ).

Balanced attack: all told, 15 Notre Dame players have scored this season, while 12 players have at least 10 points on the season.

The Irish are 11-1-0 when scoring first this season.

Notre Dame’s penalty kill is 81-for-88 on the season (.9205), which ranks second in the NCAA and trails only Quinnipiac (.9310).

The Irish also have five shorthanded goals this season (Ellis 2, Cam Burke 2, Spencer Stastney), which ranks tied for second in the country (first in the Big Ten).

Notre Dame has made each of the last five NCAA Tournaments, the longest streak in program history, and eight of the last 11 NCAA Tournaments overall.

The five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances is the second-longest active streak in the NCAA, trailing only Minnesota Duluth (6), with Minnesota State (3) and St Cloud State (3) tied for third.

As the No. 4 seed, Notre Dame had been set to face top-seeded Boston College in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament in the Albany Regional, but the Irish were removed from the tournament due to COVID-19 protocols..

Next – Notre Dame – Boston college all-time…
