Notre Dame on list of fan bases that don’t care for college basketball

Do you care for Irish hoops?

It’s no secret the past couple of years have been rough for Notre Dame basketball fans. The Irish vastly underachieved last year, and a new roster and coaching staff this year meant the program had to start from scratch. That doesn’t exactly draw interest from fans.

Whatever the reason though, Irish fans simply don’t care about college basketball. At least that’s the opinion of Big Game Boomer, a college list aficionado on social media who decided to include Notre Dame among a group of college fan bases that allegedly could care less about college hoops:

First of all, Irish basketball fans haven’t had much to cheer about over the past few years. Secondly, while football rules supreme at Notre Dame and always will, that doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t care about the second-most popular sport at the college level. Finally, Purcell Pavilion is about two-thirds full for an average game just as it was a year ago.

It really makes you wonder what criteria Big Game Boomer used to create this list. Then again, maybe this shouldn’t be taken seriously. After all, this is the same person who thinks MLB, the NFL and, yes, the NHL all need teams in Honolulu.

Whatever. Irish fans will support the basketball team in droves when it’s really good again. We just need to be patient. The time will come.

Check the yardage book: Waialae for the 2024 Sony Open on the PGA Tour

StrackaLine offers a hole-by-hole course guide for the Sony Open in Hawaii and Waialae Country Club.

Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, site of the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii, originally was designed by famed golden-era architect Seth Raynor and opened in 1927 alongside Kāhala Beach.

The private course has undergone multiple reconstructions, mostly in the 1960s as a hotel was added to the property. Architects Robert Trent Jones Sr., Desmond Muirhead and Rick Smith made changes to the course over the decades, and most recently Tom Doak has worked to restore some of Raynor’s original design concepts.

The layout, which first hosted the PGA Tour in 1965, will play to 7,044 yards with a par of 70 this year. Of note: The standard routing is altered for the Sony Open, with the nines reversed to better take advantage of the scenic sunsets. The nines are presented below in the order in which they are played during the Tour event.

Plate lunches, mai tais and Pearl Harbor among where to eat, what to do Honolulu/Waikiki edition for Sony Open in Hawaii

A complete look at this week’s PGA Tour host.

Oahu is known as the “gathering place” for good reason – it’s the home of the state government, the financial and business center and nearly three-quarters of the state population – and it’s where the PGA Tour gathers this week for the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club.

As Hawaii’s capital and largest city, Honolulu is the point of entry for most visits to the islands. The city alternates as a beach resort, urban center, commercial hub, international port and living landmark of Hawaiian history.

Waikiki, the southeastern quarter of the city, is one of the most famous tourist destinations of the world, a magical mile of beachfront hotels, shops, restaurants, and endless entertainment, especially at the modern International Market Place and bustling Kalakaua Avenue. It is also one of the city’s busiest areas.

Waikiki Beach is the general name that refers to any and all of the beaches on the south shore of Oahu, beginning on the Waikiki side of the Hilton Lagoon in the west and stretching all the way to the fringes of Diamond Head Crater. During the day the beaches are awash in aquatic activities as surfers paddle between catamarans, canoes paddle around snorkelers and swimmers jostle into each other. It’s also prime people-watching territory. Here’s some of the places to see, stay and things to eat.

Nebraska recruiting Hawaii’s top player for 2025

The No. 1 player in the state of Hawaii for the class of 2025 is receiving interest from the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

The No. 1 player in the state of Hawaii for the class of 2025 is receiving interest from the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Interior offensive lineman Houston Kaahaaina-Torres is a three-star prospect from St. Louis High School in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Nebraska has had recent recruiting success in the state. The Cornhuskers recently received the commitment of interior offensive lineman Preston Taumua, the No. 1 ranked player in Hawaii for 2024.

He’s been receiving heavy interest from the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, the Utah Utes and the Huskers. It’s unknown how the conference realignment for Utah from the Pac 12 to the Big 12 will affect his recruitment, if at all.

Aggressive shark halts girls’ surfing competition in Honolulu

A large and aggressive shark was spotted just feet from girls at a surfing competition Friday in Hawaii, prompted officials to postpone the event.

A large and aggressive shark was spotted just feet from girls at a surfing competition Friday in Hawaii, prompting officials to postpone the event.

The 12-foot shark, which might have been preying on a turtle, appeared near the lineup as 11-year-old girls were competing at Ala Moana Bowls Invitational State Championship in Honolulu.

Kiki Oshiro Kaneshiro, 12, told Hawaii News Now that she had just paddled in from her heat before the shark sighting.

“It was super scary,” she said. “I feel really bad for those girls. I really hope they’re okay and not really traumatized by anything, because I’m scared right now talking about it.”

KHON2 reported that the shark was thrashing at the surface just feet from two competitors.

Andrew Rossiter, Waikiki Aquarium Director, told KHON2 that the shark most likely was “trying to break off a piece of meat, probably a shell.”

Rossiter added: “I would also guess this shark was eating a turtle and trying to break off a semi-circle of shell and meat.”

Green sea turtles are a common prey item of tiger sharks.

The competition was canceled as Ocean Safety lifeguards posted warning signs and cautioned surfers at nearby spots.

The Hawaii Surfing Assn. informed competitors on its website to be prepared to resume competing in the Ala Moana Bowls Invitational on Saturday.

Honolulu surfer in serious condition after shark attack

A 58-year-old surfer was hospitalized in serious condition Sunday after a shark bit his right leg at Kewalo Basin in Honolulu.

A 58-year-old surfer was hospitalized in serious condition Sunday after a large shark bit his right leg at Kewalo Basin in Honolulu.

KHON2 reports that friends of the surfer might have saved his life by using a surfboard leash as a tourniquet. The man, a regular at the surfing spot, was transported to a nearby trauma center after the dawn incident.

The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources stated in a news release that an 8-foot tiger shark was believed responsible for biting the surfer.

The DNLR added: “When others came to the man’s aid they report that a shark returned and was acting aggressively.”

A dive boat with 30 passengers left the area soon after being told about the incident.

Warning signs were posted and the area was ordered closed to swimming and surfing until at least noon Monday.

Check the yardage book: Waialae Country Club for the PGA Tour’s 2023 Sony Open in Hawaii

StrackaLine offers hole-by-hole maps for Waialae Country Club and this week’s Sony Open in Hawaii.

Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, site of the 2023 Sony Open in Hawaii, originally was designed by famed golden-era architect Seth Raynor and opened in 1927.

After the PGA Tour started its year at the mountainous Kapalua Plantation Course last week, Waialae offers a much flatter test – the course features only about 10 feet of elevation changes – while still providing ocean views to get many of us stuck on the mainland tuning in.

The private course alongside Kāhala Beach has undergone multiple reconstructions, mostly in the 1960s as a hotel was added to the property. Robert Trent Jones Sr., Desmond Muirhead and Rick Smith made changes to the course over the decades. In recent years Tom Doak has worked to restore some of Raynor’s original design concepts.

2022 ACC/Big Ten Challenge matchups announced

Besides the one involving the Irish, which game most interests you?

Few things draw more excitement during the early part of the college basketball season than the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Every team from one power conference matches up against one from the other. Whether the opponent is good or bad, it also is nice for these teams to see how well they do against a similar level of competition. It definitely is one of the major tuneups for when the conference schedule begins.

The 2022 matchups have been announced, and the ACC would like to change its luck. The conference won this series, which began in 1999, in each of its first 10 seasons. Since then, its only wins have come in 2016 and 2017, the latter of which saw it post a series-best 11-3 record. The Big Ten has had the upper hand in each of the past three years, so a changing of the guard is overdue.

Here are the matchups for this year’s edition:
