Newly-signed Broncos practice squad WR reacts to being waived by Saints

Newly-signed Broncos practice squad wide receiver A.T. Perry reacts to being waived by Saints: ‘I was released just for them to bring another o-lineman in’

New Orleans Saints fans weren’t the only ones surprised to see A.T. Perry get waived last week. The wide receiver was blindsided, too. Perry signed with the Denver Broncos practice squad after clearing waivers, and the former sixth-round draft pick reacted with words of criticism upon being let go.

“It was kind of a shock that I was released just for them to bring another o-lineman in,” Perry told the Denver Post’s Parker Gabriel.

That lineman the Saints brought in was Connor McGovern, who played 24 snaps at center on Monday night against the Kansas City Chiefs after Lucas Patrick suffered a collarbone injury. When Patrick returned to the lineup in the second half, he went to left guard while McGovern remained at the pivot.

And those 24 snaps McGovern played were more than Perry totaled through the first four games this season. Obviously this was a disappointing turn of events, but the writing was on the wall when rookies like Mason Tipton and Bub Means were getting on the field and Perry wasn’t.

“It was kind of confusing for me,” Perry continued, speaking with Gabriel. “Just wanting to play in that offense — (Derek Carr) was throwing the ball around and I wanted to be part of that. Unfortunately, I wasn’t. I was on the active roster but inactive (on game days) each week. They said it was my hand.”

Perry was listed with a hand injury on the injury report for the first two weeks, but minor ailments continued to trip him up after that. He was limited by an illness in Week 3 and a hamstring injury slowed him down in Week 4. Then he was let go.

So while injuries may have played a factor, the bigger issue was Perry’s poor performance at practice. He only caught one pass from Carr in team drills throughout all of training camp. When speaking about the decision to start Spencer Rattler this week while Carr is dealing with an injury, offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak may have inadvertently shared some insight to Perry’s situation: “I haven’t met a lot of gamers. Usually, what people do in practice is what they do in games.”

Good luck to Perry in Denver, where he’s reunited with Pete Carmichael and some other familiar faces. If he can quickly learn their playbook he might get on the field next Thursday when Sean Payton makes his return to New Orleans. No one questions his physical gifts and athletic talents. It’s just a shame he couldn’t put them to use in an offense lacking someone with his skills at wide receiver. It’s why the Saints are working so hard to trade for Davante Adams.

4 new Broncos players pick their jersey numbers

New Broncos players OL Dieter Eiselen (70), OT Cam Fleming (71), WR Kaden Davis (81) and WR A.T. Perry (87) picked their jersey numbers.

The Denver Broncos had a busy week making changes to the practice squad, bringing in four new players. Those new arrivals have now picked their jersey numbers.

Broncos center/guard Dieter Eiselen picked No. 70, which hasn’t been worn by a Denver player in a regular season game since former tackle Bobby Massie in 2021.

Returning tackle Cam Fleming picked No. 71, the number he wore with the New England Patriots to begin his career. He later switched to No. 75 with the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants and then wore No. 73 with the Broncos from 2021-2023.

Returning wide receiver Kaden Davis picked No. 81, which was previously worn by receiver Tre’Quan Smith last fall and by Tim Patrick before that.

New receiver A.T. Perry picked No. 87, which was famously worn by former receiver Ed McCaffrey and most recently worn by receiver David Sills.

Check out these highlights of new Broncos WR A.T. Perry

New Broncos WR A.T. Perry ran a 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds at the NFL combine. Here are his highlights from his time with the Saints.

The Denver Broncos signed ex-New Orleans Saint wide receiver A.T. Perry to their practice squad on Wednesday as part of a flurry of personnel moves.

Who exactly is A.T. Perry? Perry is a second-year wideout from Wake Forest, who was drafted by the Saints in the sixth round (195th overall) of the 2023 NFL draft. This is a very interesting move, especially ahead of the Broncos’ Week 7 Thursday Night Football matchup against head coach Sean Payton’s former team.

In 2023, the 6-5 Perry played in 10 games for the Saints, starting three. He was targeted 18 times, catching 12 passes for 246 yards and four touchdowns. That comes out to an impressive 20.4 yards per catch, according to Pro Football Reference.

Before entering the league, Perry ran a 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds at the NFL combine in 2023.

Perry adds more size, speed and youth to an already young wide receiver room that features Courtland Sutton, Josh Reynolds, Lil’Jordan Humphrey, Marvin Mims and rookies Troy Franklin and Devaughn Vele.

Broncos’ updated 17-player practice squad after flurry of roster moves

Here’s a look at the Broncos’ updated 17-player practice squad following a flurry of roster moves this week.

The Denver Broncos made a flurry of roster moves this week, including seven changes to the practice squad.

First, the Broncos promoted inside linebacker Levelle Bailey from the practice squad to the active roster. To fill Bailey’s former spot, Denver signed wide receiver A.T. Perry.

The Broncos also signed offensive tackle Cam Fleming, center Dieter Eiselen and wide receiver Kaden Davis to the practice squad. To make room for those three players, Denver released running back Salvon Ahmed and defensive back Quinton Newsome and placed offensive tackle Will Sherman on the practice squad/injured list.

The 17-player practice squad and 53-man roster are now both full.

The NFL’s standard practice squad size limit is 16 players, but there’s an exception that allows an extra international player to not count against the limit. For Denver, Australian tight end Thomas Yassmin is an exception, giving the Broncos a 17-player practice squad.

So here’s the full list of 17 players on the squad after the recent moves.

Broncos 17-player practice squad

  1. WR Michael Bandy
  2. WR David Sills
  3. WR Kaden Davis
  4. WR A.T. Perry
  5. TE Donald Parham
  6. TE Thomas Yassmin

  12. DL Matt Henningsen
  13. OLB Andrew Farmer
  14. LB Kwon Alexander

Two players can be elevated from the practice squad each week.

Broncos officially sign wide receiver to practice squad

The Broncos officially signed wide receiver A.T. Perry to their practice squad on Wednesday.

The Denver Broncos officially signed wide receiver A.T. Perry to their practice squad on Wednesday, coach Sean Payton announced after practice.

Perry is a former New Orleans Saints player who was cut last week. He was sidelined for the first five games of the season with hand and hamstring injuries but is now healthy.

Sean Payton was coaching in Denver when the Saints used a sixth-round draft pick to select Perry in last year’s draft, but Broncos VP of Player Personnel Cody Rager was part of New Orleans’ front office when they drafted Perry.

Pete Carmichael, a senior offensive assistant in Denver, also served as the Saints’ offensive coordinator last season. So while Payton does not have past experience coaching Perry, members of Payton’s staff are certainly familiar with the wide receiver.

The Broncos had room for Perry on the practice squad after promoting linebacker Levelle Bailey to the active roster on Tuesday.

Perry (6-5, 205 pounds) hauled in 12 receptions for 246 yards and four touchdowns in 10 games (three starts) with the Saints last fall. The 24-year-old receiver played college football at Wake Forest.

Broncos signing ex-Saints WR A.T. Perry to practice squad

The Broncos are signing former Saints wide receiver A.T. Perry to their practice squad.

But wait, there’s more!

The Denver Broncos made seven roster moves on Tuesday, and another move is on the way.

The Broncos are set to sign former New Orleans Saints wide receiver A.T. Perry to their practice squad, according to a report from NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill.

Denver coach Sean Payton has had a habit of collecting former Saints players and coaches, but Perry isn’t one of the players Payton drafted in New Orleans. The Saints selected Perry in the sixth round of last year’s NFL draft out of Wake Forest while Payton was coaching the Broncos.

Perry (6-5, 205 pounds) appeared in 10 games with New Orleans last fall, totaling 12 receptions for 246 yards and four touchdowns. He was a healthy scratch for the Saints’ first four games this season before being waived on Oct. 4.

The 24-year-old receiver could get a chance to play against his former team when Denver travels to New Orleans for a Thursday Night Football showdown with the Saints in Week 7.

Sean Payton’s Broncos poached another Saints player, and he didn’t even draft them

Sean Payton’s Broncos poached another former Saints player, and he didn’t even draft this one. A.T. Perry is going to Denver:

This is getting silly. Sean Payton’s Denver Broncos signed another former New Orleans Saints player, but he didn’t even draft this one. Wide receiver A.T. Perry signed with the Broncos practice squad on Tuesday, per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill.

Perry had been waived after being a healthy scratch for each of the Saints’  first four games in 2024; they drafted him in the sixth round of the 2023  NFL draft, and he made some nice plays in spot duty during the second half of the season.

But he appeared to be a poor fit in Klint Kubiak’s offense and the Saints chose to let him go, though head coach Dennis Allen emphasized that the door was open for him to stick around. The Saints even opened a spot on their practice squad by promoting rookie guard Kyle Hergel to the 53-man roster on Monday.

But now Perry will be picking up a new playbook, or at least one similar to what he learned as a rookie. His former play caller Pete Carmichael is on staff with Payton in Denver as are some other familiar faces. And Saints fans  could see him as soon as next Thursday when Payton and the Broncos visit New Orleans for a prime-time game.

Recently-cut Saints WR is now a free agent after clearing waivers

A.T. Perry cleared waivers, and the Saints have an open spot on their practice squad. But what happens next might be up to him:

Now this is interesting. The New Orleans Saints waived wide receiver A.T. Perry last Friday, and when the waiver wire updated on Monday no team chose to pick him up, per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. Now Perry is a free agent, but what happens next may be up to him.

Saints coach Dennis Allen has already expressed an openness to keeping Perry around on the practice squad, and wouldn’t you know it but the team has a spot open after promoting rookie offensive lineman Kyle Hergel to the 53-man roster. But that’s not to say Perry doesn’t have options. He could choose to sign with another team’s practice squad and see if he has more success, depending on whether he’s received any offers.

You just have to wonder what’s out there. 32 teams saw his name on the waiver wire and decided they had better players on their rosters already; had someone claimed him, that team would’ve had to let another player go to make room. Swapping out rostered players with those on practice squads is a much lower-stakes affair.

Perry fell to the sixth round in last year’s draft for unquantifiable “character concerns,” and that may have played a part in the decision to not claim him. And his problems in New Orleans have been with picking up the playbook and executing his role on offense. Maybe that’s what scared off those teams in the first place. There’s a good chance Perry remains with the Saints on their practiice squad, but that’s no sure thing. Otherwise they wouldn’t have risked losing him on waivers at all.

Dennis Allen explains why the Saints cut wide receiver A.T. Perry

Dennis Allen explained why the Saints waived wide receiver A.T. Perry, and what the future may hold for him in the NFL:

The New  Orleans Saints surprised many of their fans this week by waiving wide receiver A.T. Perry, last year’s sixth-round draft pick out of Wake  Forest. Head coach Dennis Allen was asked about the decision during his regular press conference ahead of Monday night’s road game with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Allen says it was a combination of Perry’s underwhelming fit in the offense and the need for greater depth at other positions that forced their hand. Perry dealt with some minor injuries but was inactive for each of their first four games this season, and injuries had piled up along the offensive line.

“Probably the biggest thing that went into the decision, in terms of healthy inactives and guys we could create a spot with, we signed the offensive lineman (Connor McGovern, from the New York Jets practice squad). That’s really what that boiled down to,” Allen said Saturday.

When pressed, Allen continued: “Sometimes you make some moves because it’s roster management moves. I still think he’s got some ability. So we’ll see what happens, he’ll have to go through the waiver claim, which happens on Monday, and then we’ll go from there.”

Allen added that the Saints would “absolutely” like to re-sign Perry to the practice squad if he clears waivers, so there’s a chance we haven’t seen the last of him just yet. How strong those odds are depends on how the same teams that passed on Perry in the draft last year feel about him now. Everyone needs receivers, and there aren’t many players his size who move as smoothly as he does. He should garner some attention on the waiver wire.

Saints’ surprise roster cut could may suggest a big pickup is on the way

The Saints just opened a spot in the receiving corps and made the No. 17 jersey available. Could it pave the way to a Davante Adams trade?

The New Orleans Saints stunned their fanbase by making the decision to  waive wide receiver A.T. Perry on Friday, but many fans’ firs thoughts turned to another wideout after the shock wore off: Davante Adams. The six-time Pro Bowler has requested a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders, who this week began exploring their options.

Reports have had  the Saints near the top of Adams’ wishlist of destinations, and they could use more help at the position given their reliance on  youngsters Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. There really isn’t a veteran presence at wide receiver in New Orleans, and Adams could add a lot to the offense given his strong resume and past experience with Derek Carr.

But while it’s fun to speculate about Perry’s departure paving the way to an Adams trade, that feels more like wishful thinking than real dot-connecting. It’s not like Perry was taking up a ton of salary cap space, and if anything the Raiders may have liked to have him thrown in to the package of assets they would be getting back for Adams.

So maybe don’t rush to any conclusions based off this roster move. Perry could sign with the practiice squad after clearing waivers and the Saints needed to open a roster spot for running back Kendre Miller if he’s coming off injured reserve this week.

Still, it’s a curiously-timed roster move. And Adams would be able to pick up his favored No. 17 jersey if he does move to New Orleans. Stay tuned.
