Texas offers Lebbeus Overton, the No. 1 player in 2023 recruiting class

Texas is finally getting in the game for the No. 1 prospect in the ’23 class. On Monday, UT offered five-star strongside DE Lebbeus Overton.

Texas is finally getting in the game for the No. 1 prospect in the 2023 recruiting class. On Monday, the Longhorns offered five-star strongside defensive end Lebbeus Overton.

Much like quarterback target Quinn Ewers, Overton is rated a perfect 1.000 on the 247Sports composite. Overton has been the No. 1 player ever since the 2023 class rankings debuted in August 2020.

To say family connections go against the Longhorns would be… generous. Overton’s father, Milton, played college football across the Red River from 1991-1994. Five years later, he was the Associate Athletic Director at Texas A&M until 2009. One 247Sports crystal ball has been inserted for Overton in favor of the Sooners.

Pete Kwiatkowski’s scheme would see Overton project more as a defensive tackle than a defensive end. He is about 20 pounds lighter than Alfred Collins coming out of high school but is only a sophomore and will have plenty of room to grow. Overton is athletic as well, even playing tight end last season.

Texas tight end Gunnar Helm works out with five-star quarterback Arch Manning

On Friday, a current Texas player got in on the Arch Manning recruitment. TE Gunnar Helm posted a picture with Manning after a workout.

No prospect is going to be coveted more in the 2023 cycle than quarterback Arch Manning. The composite five-star will be making college visits throughout the month of June. Alabama, Clemson, SMU, and Texas will all have their opportunities to impress.

Running back commit Rueben Owens has been going after Manning the most. The two met with each other in New Orleans, while Owens once again mentioned the quarterback after a track and field meet. Texas’ sole member of the 2023 class is making sure the top players in the country are interested in Austin.

On Friday, a current Texas player got in on the action. True freshman tight end Gunnar Helm posted a picture with Manning on Twitter after a workout. The two flashed a ‘Hook ’em’, letting fans overreact as to what it means.

Helm was a player who stood out to Steve Sarkisian during spring practice. Even in a jam-packed tight end room, the former three-star prospect could sneak his way up the depth chart throughout the year.

As for Manning, his recruitment will be drawn out for quite a while. He and his family have been through the process multiple times, all being high-stakes recruitments. Academics will play a role as well.

Sarkisian built a relationship with Manning going back to his time in Tuscaloosa. If any non-SEC schools are going to be in the race, it is Clemson and Texas.

Where Texas targets land in the updated 247Sports 2023 rankings

247Sports updated their rankings on Wednesday for the 2023 class. Here are where UT’s top targets land, including commit Rueben Owens.

Recruiting has begun to pick up with the 2023 class. With the COVID-19 pandemic slowly fading away, prospects are going to be allowed to visit college campuses for the first time since March 2020. Virtual tours have been conducted over the past year, but nothing beats seeing something in person.

Texas is going to have a weekend dedicated to the 2023 class this June. Steve Witflong of 247Sports reported Arch Manning would be on campus the weekend of June 11. Other recruits such as Rueben Owens are expected in Austin at the same time. A huge opportunity for Steve Sarkisian and his staff to impress early in the cycle.

247Sports updated their rankings on Wednesday for the 2023 class. After California finished their delayed spring season, some west coast prospects got a bump, along with national recruits showing out on the 7v7 scene and in camps.

Here are where Texas’ top targets land in the 2023 class updated rankings:

Report: Five-star quarterback Arch Manning is visiting Texas in June

247Sports caught up with the Manning family, laying out their visit schedule. He reports they will be on UT’s campus the weekend of June 11.

No name is going to be bigger in the 2023 recruiting scene than five-star quarterback Arch Manning. The latest prospect out of the famous family will send shockwaves throughout the country whenever his decision is made.

Manning is taking the next step in his recruiting process — taking visits to campuses. Since the COVID-19 pandemic has taken over the globe, no prospects have been able to see schools in person. With the NCAA dead period being lifted, coaches are preparing for top recruits to be in their cities.

The five-star only has reported 11 offers according to 247Sports. Texas is among those and according to a recent report, Manning will be in Austin this summer.

Steve Witflong of 247Sports caught up with the Manning family, laying out their summer schedule. Witflong reports they will be on Texas’ campus the weekend of June 11 after a trip to see SMU in Dallas during the week.

Alabama, Clemson, and Georgia will also receive visits during the month of June.

Check out Manning’s sophomore year highlights below.

Rueben Owens has been hot on the trail for Manning as well. The five-star running back remains the sole commit in Texas’ 2023 class. The two were together in New Orleans this past April. Having the soon-to-be No. 1 running back and No. 1 quarterback in the country would be quite the start to a recruiting cycle.

The only issue regarding the Longhorns’ pursuit of Manning is the continuing recruitment of 2022 prospect Quinn Ewers. Landing both generational quarterbacks is unlikely. There are pros and cons to both spending their college days on campus, a debate that will rage on for Texas fans over the upcoming months.

Texas offers No. 1 player from Washington in defensive end Jayden Wayne

On Tuesday, Steve Sarkisian and Texas offered strongside defensive end Jayden Wayne. The 247Sports composite five-star has begun to explode.

Steve Sarkisian is once again attempting to build good recruiting relationships in his former home state. The former Washington head coach has kept his west coast connections, even after moving to the other side of the Mississippi before landing in Austin.

On Tuesday, Sarkisian offered strongside defensive end Jayden Wayne. The 247Sports composite five-star has begun to explode, receiving three offers on Tuesday alone. Alabama and Miami joined the party as well.

Wayne is a member of the 2023 recruiting class, one Texas is trying to capitalize on early in the process. Four-star running back Rueben Owens has already shut down his recruitment and has now become a recruiter for the Longhorns.

With how highly ranked Wayne is, he will have options from across the nation. Pete Kwiatkowski also knows the pacific northwest well, coming straight from Washington. The defensive coordinator should be a huge factor in Wayne’s recruitment if Texas wants to stay in it.

The top 10 in-state 2023 prospects on the 247Sports composite

As usual, the state of Texas is full of talent in the 2023 class. Here are the top 10 players in the cycle and their notable offers.

As usual, the state of Texas is full of talent in the 2023 recruiting class. Seventeen players rank inside the top 100 nationally per the 247Sports composite.

Of the top 10 within the state, only one player has committed. Four-star running back Rueben Owens locked down his recruitment in late February, committing to Texas and coach Stan Drayton. Owens has already been looking to add to the class and even met with five-star quarterback Arch Manning recently.

Five-star defensive end Anthony Hill headlines the group, coming in as the No. 8 player in the country. Offense and defense are split within the top 10, with Shiner’s Dalton Brooks projected to play safety.

Here are the top 10 in-state players in the 2023 class and their notable offers:

LOOK: Texas commit Rueben Owens poses with five-star quarterback Arch Manning

Nobody has been working harder on Arch Manning publicly than UT’s sole ’23 commit Rueben Owens. The two posted a photo together on Saturday.

No name is going to be discussed more in the 2023 class than Arch Manning. Son of Cooper, uncle of Peyton and Eli, one of football’s biggest royal families is once again the topic of the recruiting world.

Manning is one of four players in the ’23 cycle Rivals has already ranked as a five-star prospect. On the 247Sports composite, he is the No. 3 player in the country and the top quarterback, regardless of being a pocket passer or dual-threat.

Texas is squarely in the running for the New Orleans native, much in thanks to Steve Sarkisian. The Manning family connected with him during his time in Tuscaloosa and have expressed interest in a school not in the SEC – something we have never seen before.

Nobody has been working harder on Manning publicly than Texas’ sole 2023 commit Rueben Owens. His goal is to bring the top quarterback in the country to Austin with him.

Owens connected with Manning on Saturday, posting a picture on Twitter and tagging Director of Recruiting Brandon Harris. The running back pulled a Kirk Cousins, saying “you like that ?”.

Harris indirectly responded, saying he was more than fine with the two connecting. Shannon Sharpe seemed okay with it as well.

Texas’ future quarterback room is still up in the air. Hudson Card and Casey Thompson are still battling it out for the starting job this season, while Maalik Murphy is the current quarterback commit of the 2022 class. Since he is seen as a developmental project, another quarterback will be needed.

Of course, there is always a certain blonde-haired prospect from Southlake Carroll. Is anything going to come from that camp? Sarkisian has until December to do so.

Whenever Arch Manning decides to shut down his recruitment, it will be the biggest story in the sports world. Nothing moves the needle in the football world quite like the Manning family.

If Texas ends up being the choice, you have to believe the ’23 class will take off.

Four-star 2023 defensive end Ashton Porter picks up offer from Texas

Texas offered four-star DE Ashton Porter on Wednesday. It is the fourth program to offer Porter, just behind ASU, Colorado, and SMU.

Defensive end is a position Texas has fallen behind on in the 2022 recruiting class. Omari Abor and Ernest Cooper, two of the best within the state, have moved on from the Longhorns in favor of other national programs. If Bo Davis wants to land a top in-state defensive end, it will have to be from the 2023 class.

The seventh offer to a 2023 defensive end was made on Wednesday to four-star Ashton Porter.

Texas is the fourth program to offer Porter, behind Arizona State, Colorado and SMU. Cypress is in the greater Houston area, meaning Texas A&M will be in the mix sooner rather than later.

In Porter’s sophomore season, he recorded 32 tackles, 11.5 of which were for a loss. Four sacks and two fumbles led to him being unanimously named  Texas 16-6A first-team all district.

247Sports is the only recruiting website to have Porter ranked. Listed as a strong side defensive end, he is the No. 23 player at his position. Nationally, Porter lands at No. 178 and is ranked as the No. 21 prospect within the state of Texas.

With the NCAA dead period potentially being lifted, recruits are going to be allowed on campuses to see when they would possibly be spending the next three to four years of their lives. Four-star running back Rueben Owens, Texas’ only 2023 commit, has begun to round up names to see Austin.

Texas Football Recruiting: 2023 four-star WR DeAndre Moore puts Texas in top schools

Four-star WR DeAndre Moore announced his top 12 schools on Monday, with Texas making the list. He ranks as the No. 1 WR in the ’23 class.

April 2021 is way too early to put any stock into a 2022 prospect, let alone a 2023 recruit. However, Texas is beginning to make early strides within the class. Four-star running back Rueben Owens committed in February, while Texas has picked up its pursuit in five-star quarterback Arch Manning.

Steve Sarkisian is going to love recruiting out west due to previous ties during his time at Washington and USC. Las Vegas is one of the biggest hotspots in the Pacific Time Zone and Texas has made the cut for one of their top 2023 prospects.

Four-star wide receiver DeAndre Moore announced his top 12 schools on Monday and the Longhorns made the list. Arizona State and USC are the only two Pac-12 programs remaining, with national programs and Texas A&M still in contention.

In 247Sports’ latest rankings update, Moore is the No. 1 player in the state of Nevada and the No. 3 wide receiver.

Where Texas’ top 2023 targets land after 247Sports update rankings

It’s never too early to look ahead at the 2023 class. Here are UT’s top junior targets and where the 247Sports rating update placed them.

Despite being in the midst of the 2022 recruiting class, it is never too early to look ahead at the rising juniors. Once again, it is a loaded class within the state of Texas, with 18 players ranked inside the top 100 on the 247Sports composite.

As for the 247Sports rankings themselves, the lead recruiting website updated where players stand on Wednesday morning. Texas’ lone commit, running back Rueben Owens, fell 11 spots but remained the No. 2 running back in the country.

Plenty of other Texas targets were included in the update, headlined by quarterback Arch Manning. Rivals named the son of Cooper a five-star on Monday. On Wednesday, Manning was named the No. 1 quarterback in the country by 247Sports.

Here are the rest of Texas’ top 2023 targets and where the 247Sports rating update placed them.
