Fantasy football: Where to draft New Orleans Saints WR Chris Olave

Analyzing New Orleans Saints WR Chris Olave’s 2022 fantasy football ADP and where you should target him in your drafts.

The New Orleans Saints have struggled to get their feet under their offense in the post-Drew Brees era, but when healthy they have some deadly talents including quarterback Jameis Winston, running back Alvin Kamara and wide receiver Michael Thomas. Given Thomas’ recent injury history, the Saints front office felt it had to hedge its bets and took Chris Olave with the 11th pick of the 1st round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Below, we look at Chris Olave‘s 2022 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Olave was a star at Ohio State and has a skill set that translates well to transitioning to the NFL. Where is he currently ranked, he could be one of the top sleeper candidates deep into the back end of fantasy drafts.

Chris Olave’s ADP: 114.22

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated at time of this publishing – ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

Olave’s positioning (the 44th ranked wide receiver) puts him in the middle of the WR5 crop in 10-player leagues. This is an area where savvy owners who have depth at the top of their wide receiver roster feel comfortable rolling the dice on a player with breakout potential and Olave is one of those guys.

His ADP puts him in the middle of a group of players on teams with fantasy questions at quarterback. He is slightly behind Robert Woods (Tennessee Titans) at 103.19 and Chase Claypool (Pittsburgh Steelers) at 110.97 and a little ahead of DeVante Parker (New England Patriots) at 115.40 and D.J. Chark (Detroit Lions) at 118.05.

Chris Olave’s 2021 stats at Ohio State

Games: 11

Receptions: 65

Receiving yards: 936

Receiving touchdowns: 13

Where should you draft Olave?

When you get this deep in a fantasy draft and you’re looking to fill out your wide receiver roster there are typically 1 of 2 avenues fantasy owners take — grab a veteran guy with some gas left in the tank that provides a “name” player who makes a fantasy owner feel confident when forced to play him. or swing for the fence on a young talent who could be a breakout hit.

Olave has elite speed and his role early on is expected to be the designated deep threat. Given the defensive attention Thomas will receive if he’s healthy, many of Olave’s deep routes are going to be in single coverage. Winston has never been shy about throwing the deep ball and Olave could be the perfect receiver for his style of play.

When you’re looking at the players that would be in the WR5 range you need to ask yourself who in that grouping is most likely to make a big jump to where his ranking will be in 2023? For money, Olave as at the head of that list.

Fantasy football: Where to draft Seattle Seahawks RB Rashaad Penny

Analyzing Seattle Seahawks RB Rashaad Penny’s 2022 fantasy football ADP and where you should target him in your drafts.

There may be no more interesting a player in fantasy drafts this year than Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny. He was expected to be headed out the door in Seattle after being a colossal bust as a 1st-round draft pick. In his first 3 seasons (27 games), he rushed for just 823 yards and had only 17 receptions. It was going to be a quiet end to his Seahawks career – and quite possibly his NFL career.

Then came the last 5 games of the 2021 season.

In the final 5 games of last season, Penny led all NFL running backs with 92 carries for a mind-boggling 671 yards and 6 touchdowns — one of the most dominant 5-game streaks in recent history. After four years, he finally lived up to the promise he had given the organization when he was taken with the 27th pick in 2018 and now he’s back on a 1-year deal to prove it wasn’t a fluke.

Below, we look at Rashaad Penny‘s 2022 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Rashaad Penny’s ADP: 72.29

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated at time of this publishing – ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

Fantasy owners aren’t completely buying into Penny’s crazy-good finish to 2021. He is ranked as the 28th running back, which makes him a RB3 in 10-player leagues that is likely going to be counted on to play several weeks during the 2022 season.

His ranking puts him in the category of players fighting to hold on to their starting jobs and new faces in new places. Penny’s ADP puts him behind Antonio Gibson (Washington Commanders) at 68.44 and Devin Singletary (Buffalo Bills) at 2.03 and ahead of fast-rising Dameon Pierce (Houston Texans) at 76.45 and Chase Edmonds (Miami Dolphins) at 80.71.

Where should you draft Penny?

It’s clear that the new-look Seahawks are going to run the ball more because their quarterback cupboard is pretty bare, but to have Penny ranked as a critical player on a roster is asking too much.

He’s never made it through a full season without missing time due to injury during his 4-year career. He’s played in just 37 games and missed 28 games with various ailments. Can you count on a guy you’re going to need at a minimum when your top two RBs are on their bye week? I’m not.

Seattle went to the draft well this spring to use the 41st pick on running back Kenneth Walker III. Seeing as some of the top-rated quarterbacks in the draft were still available at this time, that’s a statement move for a team trotting out stiffs like Geno Smith and Drew Lock under center.

Throw in that coach Pete Carroll has never been loyal to running backs not named Marshawn Lynch and Penny has no leg up heading into the season. It will only be a matter of time until Walker supplants him — whether through more consistent play or another Penny injury. Walker has missed time in the preseason but is expected to be good to go in Week 1, where the in-house competition begins.

If you’re considering taking Penny here, take someone else and grab Walker as your RB4 three rounds later. You will get more production at a cheaper cost.

Fantasy football draft-day rules to live by

These rules are in no particular order, and they apply to all levels of experience among fantasy owners. Just as important as the “what you should do” to create a winner in fantasy drafting, avoiding simple pitfalls is a must.

1) Living in the past: Assuming successes and failures from last year automatically will carry over to this year’s results is a quick trip to Loserville. Each year is brand new and requires a reset of the old memory bank.

2) Stay sober: While it may seem silly, don’t let one draft of hard boozing affect an entire season of fantasy football. Party it up after the draft and celebrate your soon-to-be championship roster.

3) No one likes a homer: Well, except for that Homer. Heavily drafting players from your favorite team tends to lead to an entire season of hangover-filled mornings. This also includes taking a specific player over a better option just because that player is on your favorite team. Be objective.

4) Draft by the rules: Not knowing your league’s scoring structure, lineup composition, and/or bylaws generally results in utter failure. At a minimum, it translates into lost points.

Fantasy football: Where to draft Carolina Panthers QB Baker Mayfield

Analyzing Carolina Panthers QB Baker Mayfield’s 2022 fantasy football ADP and where you should target him in your drafts.

The NFL career of Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield has taken many twists and turns, the most recent being his banishment from Cleveland after the Browns mortgaged their future with the acquisition of former Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson in a blockbuster trade that sent a slew of draft picks to Houston and the largest guaranteed contract in NFL history to Watson.

Below, we look at Baker Mayfield‘s 2022 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Mayfield showed promise early in his career with the Browns, but seemed to regress after a strong start — especially last season. He threw for a career-low in passing yards (3,010) and had almost as many interceptions (13) as touchdowns (17). Considering that has never offered much in the run game, when your points are almost exclusively earned by throwing and you post career-worst numbers, the bandwagon isn’t taking on passengers.

Baker Mayfield’s ADP: 146.21

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated at time of this publishing – ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

Mayfield’s ADP has him ranked as the 23rd fantasy quarterback, which has him at the very end in 12-player leagues and being undrafted in 10-player leagues. Coming into a new system may have Mayfield amped for a comeback, but fantasy owners aren’t buying into the hype.

His ADP has him in the middle a slew of former 1st round quarterbacks that have either struggled or haven’t had much of an opportunity to shine. He finds himself behind Justin Fields (Chicago Bears) at 137.63 and Mac Jones (New England Patriots) art 141.17 and ahead of Jared Goff (Detroit Lions) at 153.11 and Daniel Jones (New York Giants) at 153.99.

Where should you draft Mayfield?

While many drafters are down on Mayfield, he has some solid weapons in the passing game, including star running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receivers D.J. Moore, Robbie Anderson and Terrace Marshall. With such a strong supporting cast, I think Mayfield is ranked too low.

I’m not a huge fan of him, but I would definitely put Mayfield ahead of Jones and likely ahead of Fields for the simple fact that neither of them has a strong supporting cast around them. The only issue I see with Mayfield is that there is another No. 1 overall pick on the Panthers’ roster — Sam Darnold — who could end up having Mayfield looking over his shoulder if he struggles.

Mayfield is at a crossroads in his career and will likely need to have a big season to get a contract that isn’t just a 1- or 2-year deal with the Panthers or someone else moving forward. He has the talent to be an NFL starter, but the pressure will be on in 2022 for him to prove it.

Fantasy football: Where to draft Atlanta Falcons WR Drake London

Analyzing Atlanta Falcons WR Drake London’s 2022 fantasy football ADP and where you should target him in your drafts.

The Atlanta Falcons have transformed from one of the best wide receiver rooms in the league to a room with more questions than answers over the last 18 months.

While wide receiver Drake London wasn’t the consensus pick to be the 1st wide receiver drafted in 2022, Atlanta jumped on the mismatch-making USC standout with the 8th pick of the draft. That opened the door for him to be the No. 1 wide receiver in an offense continuing to rebuild without longtime star WR Julio Jones or suspended WR Calvin Ridley.

Below, we look at Drake London‘s 2022 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

The combination of London and tight end Kyle Pitts are the building blocks for the Falcons’ future, but it may take some doing to get there quickly. It didn’t help matters that London suffered a knee injury in the first preseason game and, despite head coach Arthur Smith telling the media in the aftermath that the injury was minor, London hasn’t practiced since.

Drake London’s ADP: 101.36

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated at time of this publishing – ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

London is the 40th ranked wide receiver by ADP, which puts him as the top of the end of the WR4 grouping and between other fantasy prospects with either questionable quarterbacks or new locations.

He checks in behind Christian Kirk (Jacksonville Jaguars) at 96.39 and Elijah Moore (New York Jets) at 97.94 and in front of DeVonta Smith (Philadelphia Eagles) at 101.93 and Robert Woods (Tennessee Titans) at 103.19.

[the_huddle]

Drake London’s 2021 stats

Games: 8 (at USC)

Receptions: 88

Receiving yards: 1,084

Receiving touchdowns: 7

Where should you draft London?

For me, a rookie with a suspect journeyman quarterback — Marcus Mariota is very qualified by that standard- – is always a light red flag. A rookie who suffered a knee injury in Week 1 of the preseason and hasn’t been on the field since is a blood red flag on Draft Day.

Players get hurt during the season. Those are the breaks. When you’re selecting players, you don’t want too many negative boxes checked. A substandard QB is a big box. Check. Didn’t get reps in his first preseason. Check. Coaching staff sketchy about a prognosis. Check.

As a late-WR5 in the event that the coaching staff was telling the truth and a solid front cast of wide receivers previously drafted in front of him, London makes sense. His ability to catch a ball thrown to a spot is exceptional. The ability of Mariota to get it to that spot? Not so much.

If you’re in this spot in a redraft league and London is calling, take DeVonta Smith instead and move on.

How to budget for your fantasy football auction

Fantasy football auctions let you obtain any player – just not every player.

A fantasy football auction is the most fun way to seed players onto fantasy teams. Hands down. And if you are new to bluffing and bidding, then congratulations. You can finally own any player that you want. It is true. You can own Christian McCaffrey, or Travis Kelce, or Davante Adams, or Patrick Mahomes. But you cannot have them all and need to carefully craft the optimal fantasy team.

And so enters the value of a budget.

You know what a budget is. It is that thing that your family finances rely on between Sunday and Thursday. It’s why they love you at work but cannot, um, actually prove it this fiscal year.

But how do you do that? How to determine player value? The reality is that a player’s value will change in every auction. It’s more about what you can pay for a position and fitting in the best players you can.

Let’s consider a 12-team league that uses 18-man rosters and a $200 salary cap with a minimum bid of $1. The starters are QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, TE, PK, and DEF. Standard performance scoring with one point per reception. Here are our assumptions:

  • Quarterbacks score well, but with one starter, there is less “bang for the buck” by spending big on a top quarterback. A middle tier sort of player will be fine.
  • Running backs are going to cost the most. They always do. This is also the position that gets injured the most, so depth is a very good thing.
  • Wide receivers also score well in this format and there are three starters. It is also the deepest fantasy position.
  • There are only three or four tight ends who demand high dollars, then maybe three more that have upside. And then there are just a lot of dollar players.
  • Unless the scoring rules make either kickers or defenses unusually valuable, then paying up for them makes almost no sense given their year-to-year volatility and marginal fantasy points.

Before you create a budget, decide which of the three auction styles you want to use:

Go Big – This means buying two or three superstars. Like paying up for Jonathan Taylor, Dalvin Cook, and Davante Adams. And after paying maybe $150 for those three, you have to buy 15 more players for a total of $50. You better be good at finding value for $2 or $3 per player.

Go Wide – This is the most common and treats the auction as if it were a draft. You can array the player costs and it looks like what would result from a draft. One great player, several really good ones, some “have potential” players, and then a string of depth players.

Go Deep – A personal favorite, but not a comfortable style since it entails likely watching the first 30 or 40 highest-paid players get taken before winning a bid. The intent is to let everyone else burn up the big bucks on the top players and then being able to rule the middle of the auction when you have cash to spend on all the middle-tier players. This is like getting to build your team by using all fourth and fifth-round players. One problem – if anyone else also does this you just overpay in a bidding war.

Let’s create a sample budget for “Going Wide.” It is easy enough to move the values around to employ any of the three above styles.

  1. Decide on how much each position should cost overall.
  2. Take those amounts and spread to cover a starting lineup.
  3. Final version to spread out over all 18 positions
1. Positions 2. Starters 3. Final
QB1 $16 QB1 $16 QB1 $12
QB2 QB2 QB2 $3
RB1 $100 RB1 $40 RB1 $40
RB2 RB2 $40 RB2 $30
RB3 RB3 $20 RB3 $20
RB4 RB4 RB4 $5
RB5 RB5 RB5 $5
RB6 RB6 RB6 1$
WR1 $70 WR1 $30 WR1 $30
WR2 WR2 $30 WR2 $25
WR3 WR3 $10 WR3 $10
WR4 WR4 WR4 $3
WR5 WR5 WR5 1$
WR6 WR5 WR6 $2
TE1 $10 TE1 $10 TE1 $9
TE2 TE2 TE2 $2
PK $2 PK $2 PK $2
DEF $2 DEF $2 DEF $2
Total $200 Total $200 Total $200

By using the budget, I know how much I can spend on any position. By no means is this more than a guideline. You’ll find plenty of reasons to throw a few more dollars into a position than budgeted, but you can easily decide where that money is deducted. Remember – depth is good, but that starting lineup should take up a major chunk of your money. Often the back half of an auction is mostly just players going at the $1 bidding minimum.

DO NOT HAVE MONEY LEFT OVER

Spend it all. You’ll pull up short on many players that end up going for just a dollar or two more. If you end up with unspent money, your roster could have been better. You just constantly adjust on the fly, spending more or less on the positions. When you target your RB2 for $40 but get the guy for $35, then another remaining position just found $5 more to be spent on.

The auction cheat sheets on the site are in percentages of the salary cap, so for a $200 cap just double the percentages to derive the dollar amounts. Compare the above budget against the cheat sheet values to see what team you could build. The values are derived from what position and player costs were from actual auctions.

Play around with the numbers on your budget and compare it to our auction cheat sheet or other actual auctions this summer. The Huddle’s annual Expert League Auction results can offer a feel for what to expect.

Fantasy football draft strategy: Must-have players after Round 8

Come away from your draft with these late-round sleepers.

While fantasy football leagues can be won and lost in the early draft rounds, it tends to be the latter half of the selection process where savvy owners separate themselves from the pack.

Average draft position (ADP) figures can vary wildly from service to service, so we’re using an aggregate of four prominent sites to establish as close to a uniform valuation as possible.

Let’s dive into the top-12 targets for success after Round 8 in conventional PPR redraft leagues.

Fantasy Football: 5 important handcuff running backs for 2022

Alexander Mattison is the clear choice to top this list of running back handcuffs to target in fantasy football.

There are some NFL backfields with two fantasy-relevant running backs who have standalone value in fantasy football even if both RBs stay healthy.

And there are other backfields that feature a backup who doesn’t offer much standalone value but is still a must-roster player due to the workload he’d assume if the starter went down. That’s a handcuff running back, or an insurance running back, and these are five of the top candidates you should consider this season.

Will fantasy owners capitalize on an investment in Tyler Allgeier?

A late-round selection could pay off nicely for those willing to take a chance.

Despite not being chosen until the fifth round, Atlanta Falcons running back Tyler Allgeier, the 12th of 23 RBs selected, drew some offseason buzz from fantasy football owners because he was stepping into a potentially advantageous situation. Now that training camp and the preseason are in the rearview mirror, however, it’s time reexamine Allgeier’s outlook for 2022.

One of the things that jumped off the page for fantasy owners was Allgeier’s role at BYU as a true workhorse type of back — to that end he carried the ball 276 times as a senior and led FBS in rushing touchdowns with 23. He’s also strong in pass protection, which should make him a viable option in the Falcons backfield regardless of down and distance. Allgeier is a tough, physical runner that drew some comps to Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner.

We have more than a quarter-century track record of creating fantasy football champs. Sign up for The Huddle today to gain an award-winning edge on the competition!

The rookie didn’t exactly shine during camp or the preseason, however, carrying the ball 17 times for 68 yards and a touchdown. That included an eight-carry stint in the finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars when both Cordarrelle Patterson and Damien Williams were held out. If the Falcons had seen what they felt they needed to see of out Allgeier to that point, he likely would’ve joined them on the sidelines, which is what we saw with the Houston Texans and fellow rookie running back Dameon Pierce.

At this point, the depth chart has Patterson, who converted from receiver to running back last year, at the top. That was always to be expected, but the team’s most versatile weapon is never going to be a down-in, down-out grinder who runs between the tackles. He had 1,166 offensive yards and 11 combined TDs on 205 total touches a year ago, and it’s hard to imagine they’ll ask much more than that in 2022.

Where Allgeier disappointed is in failing to surpass Williams, a legit journeyman playing for his fourth team in the last five years, for the backup job. By far Williams’ best years came with the Kansas City Chiefs, which included 2019 when he set career highs in carries (111), yards (498), and touchdowns (five), but the 30-year-old did little with the Chicago Bears a season ago. This figures to be one of those occasional situations in which the depth chart won’t match the fantasy depth chart should Patterson get injured. Allgeier is physically better equipped to handle a larger load than Williams.

Fantasy football outlook

Expect the Falcons to mix and match will all three of their top backs, at least initially, with Patterson getting the majority of the touches, while Williams and Allgeier divvy up the more physical work. The BYU product could move into a more advantageous spot if either of the backs ahead of him, both of whom are on the wrong side of 30, break down. Whether that possibility is enough to justify carrying the rookie on your bench depends on the size of your league. He is worthy of an RB4 or No. 5 spot in any design of at least 12 teams and 16 players on a roster.
