Three takeaways from Texas’ season-ending loss to Purdue

This season was a step in the right direction for Texas basketball.

The 2021-22 Texas basketball season ended at the hands of Purdue in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The Boilermakers got to the free-throw line often and hit clutch shots down the stretch to take down the Horns 81-71.

The Longhorns displayed a high level of intensity and toughness but just fell short of pulling off the upset. Playing in a meaningful March Madness game was a nice refresher for a Texas program that had not been in that spot since 2014.

Chris Beard had nothing but proud remarks about his team in his postgame press conference.

Every season ends like this unless you win the final Monday night game. Just super proud of our guys. It’s not all the normal coaching clichés, but I mean it. These guys overcame a lot.

Texas accomplished a lot in Beard’s first season and Longhorn fans have lots of reasons for optimism going forward.

Here are three takeaways from Texas’ season-ending loss in the round of 32.

How to watch, listen and stream Texas vs. West Virginia on Saturday

No. 17 Texas will host West Virginia to open Big 12 conference play.

Big 12 conference play has arrived as the No. 17 Texas Longhorns (10-2) will host West Virginia (11-1) to start the new year.

In the last matchup between these two programs a season ago, West Virginia left Austin with a victory after erasing a 19-point first half deficit.

West Virginia should be well rested as they have not played a game for almost a week and a half while Texas is coming off a 78-33 win over Incarnate Word on Tuesday.

The defense has been the strength of this Texas team so far this season. The Horns lead the nation in scoring defense allowing just over 50 ppg.

For Texas to win this game they must find a way to slow down West Virginia’s dynamic duo Taz Sherman and Sean McNeil. Sherman is averaging 21 points per game on the young season while McNeil averages 14 points per game himself.

Getting off to a win to start the gauntlet of the Big 12 schedule would be massive for both teams.

Here is how to tune in for Texas’ conference opener:

Big 12 basketball power rankings heading into conference play

Where does each Big 12 team rank ahead of conference play?

The Big 12 is arguably the best conference in college basketball top to bottom.

The conference has five teams ranked inside the AP Poll’s Top 25 rankings with two others barely missing the cut.

The Big 12 and the Pac-12 are the only two conferences with three top-10 teams. No. 1 Baylor looks fantastic again after winning their first national title a year ago. No. 6 Kansas reloaded well in the offseason and No. 8 Iowa State has been one of the bigger surprises of the season.

No. 17 Texas and No. 25 Texas Tech round out the rest of the Big 12 schools in the top 25. Texas Tech took down No. 14 Tennessee in overtime earlier in the season to jump into the rankings and has not lost since.

Oklahoma and West Virginia are on the outside looking in but have looked very good at times this season.

With conference play starting up this week, here is a look at our updated Big 12 basketball power rankings:

Updated look at Texas basketball’s roster under Chris Beard

Chris Beard was tasked with a total rebuild. Now, there are eight players on the 2021-2022 roster.

Chris Beard made a couple of things clear during his introductory press conference. First, the only expectation at the University of Texas is winning on a consistent basis.

“We fear no one,” Beard said. “We don’t think we’re better than anybody. We’re going to have that University of Texas swagger and confidence, but we’re going to have that humbleness to win at the highest level as well.”

Second, the former Texas Tech man was adamant there was not going to be a rebuilding season in his first year on the Forty Acres. Beard faced the challenge of attempting to build a new roster after Texas’ round of 64 exit in the NCAA Tournament.

Four players have announced they will return. Brock Cunningham, Jase Febres, Andrew Jones and Courtney Ramey will play for Beard this upcoming season.

Two major decisions loom as well. Greg Brown and Jericho Sims are still flirting with the NBA and have yet to announce their future plans.

The transfer portal has been hit hard. The Longhorns have already brought in four players from different schools. To add a flare to the rivalry with Texas Tech, Beard even brought along four-star forward Jaylon Tyson with him.

WATCH: Mark Cuban says the idea of an in-season NBA tournament is ‘so dumb’

As the NBA continues to discuss changes for the 2021-2022 season, many involved in the league continue to speak out against the idea of an all-30 teams ‘in-season tournament.

As the NBA continues to discuss changes for the 2021-2022 season, many involved in the league continue to speak out against the idea of an all-30 teams’ in-season tournament.

Tuesday, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban spoke trashed the idea that the NBA would reward the in-season tourney winner with an extra first-round pick.

Cuban called the idea “so dumb,” responding to a tweet by New York Times sports reporter Marc Stein, which said that the NBA teams were sent a memo, “detailing a proposed $15 million pot for the championship team and $1.5 million for the winning coaching staff, ‘incentives for teams and fans’ were listed as ‘to be determined.'”

In full, Cuban wrote “What will teams that are in the tax going outdo, tank the tournament because they don’t want the pick? Or teams trying to build a cap room? Be forced to trade it? Draft and stash ?,” continuing his disagreement with the idea in a second and third tweet saying, “And to create incremental financial incentives to play games just sends so many wrong messages. Free agency recruitment will change. ‘Hey, we can’t compete for a ring, but we go all out for the TBT, so sign with us and u could make another $1m,’ and “Or the convo if the TBT winner doesn’t make the playoffs. This is like the MLB trying to add drama to the All-Star game by using it to assign home-field advantage. How did that work out? I can’t hate an in-season winner take all tournament enough. Hopefully, TBT has a patent.”

The commentary regarding the impact on NBA cap and the way that the extra first-round pick would change and the already-complicated process is particularly strong. All things considered, there seem to be more details that players and coaches can find wrong with the proposal at this point than they have been able to compliment regarding the idea.
