The Dallas Cowboys assault on the middle tier of the NFL’s Top 100 for 2020 continues. Ater two placements in the No. 100-71 group on Sunday (Jaylon Smith at 88 and Tyron Smith at 76) three more players have been identified in the ranking from their peers.

Right guard Zack Martin was named No. 55 and then WR Amari Cooper checked in at No. 49. Now, quarterback Dak Prescott has been announced as the No. 46 player in the league heading into the new season after the best season of his career and one of the best in Cowboys history.

Prescott threw for 4,902 yards and 30 touchdowns, both career highs, in 2019. He was also sacked the least amount of times in his career (23) while setting career highs in yards per attempt, yards per completion and net yards per attempt. He also led the NFL in defense-adjusted yards above replacement, a metric that measures how well a player did while accounting for game situation and opponent strength.

Playing under the final year of his contract, Prescott proved he belonged in the upper tier of NFL quarterback and was slapped with the exclusive franchise tag, earning him a $31.4 million salary for 2020.

With new head coach Mike McCarthy taking over, Prescott will have the chance to show he can thrive in multiple systems, which would only lead to a more lucrative payday next offseason.

NFL Top 100: Cowboys WR Amari Cooper is a Top 50 talent

The Dallas Cowboys now have four members of the NFL’s top 100, with 48 slots remaining. Wideout Amari Cooper joins LB Jaylon Smith (No. 88), LT Tyron Smith (No. 76) and RG Zack Martin (No. 55) as the members of the 2019 team who have been honored by …

The Dallas Cowboys now have four members of the NFL’s top 100, with 48 slots remaining.

Wideout Amari Cooper joins LB Jaylon Smith (No. 88), LT Tyron Smith (No. 76) and RG Zack Martin (No. 55) as the members of the 2019 team who have been honored by their peers so far.

Cooper had an extraordinary start to the 2019 season that would’ve ended up ranking him higher if not for his fade down the stretch.

Player through a myriad of lower-body injuries, Cooper put together the best season of his five-year career, amassing career bests with 1,189 receiving yards and  eight touchdowns. He started all 16 games for the first time in his career.

Cooper had four 100-plus receiving yard games in the first nine contests of the season, including a dazzling 226-yard performance in Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers. A rainy-day game against the New England Patriots was the low point when he was held without a catch on two targets. Cooper never surpassed 90 yards in a game down the stretch of the season as Dallas finished 8-8 and out of the playoffs.

The season highlighted a weird trend for Cooper that sees a big discrepancy in his performance in front of the home crowd and on the road.

Even with the road woes, though, Cooper is one of the league’s preeminent talents at the position. The Cowboys, who traded their 2019 first-round pick in the middle of the 2018 campaign to acquire him, signed him to a five-year, $100 million deal this past offseason to ward off the higher bidding Washington franchise.

Together with second-year receiver Michael Gallup they formed one of the leagues 1,000-yard receiving duos. This past offseason, Dallas drafted Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb to join the team and take the offense to new heights under new head coach Mike McCarthy.

Cooper could see an improvement on the ranking made by his peers in 2020.

Formula Has Notre Dame Just Outside Pre-Season Top 10

OddsBreakers has released it’s “Not Too Early Top 12” for the 2020 college football season and Notre Dame makes the cut.  Barely, but they make it.

Before we look at the rankings and who Notre Dame is ahead of, trails and by how much, let’s first look at how they go about compiling these scores that the rankings reflect.

Their exact quote on how the scores are determined is as follows:

We have a lot of information available at our disposal to make the necessary adjustments from last year’s performance indicators.   Some of that information includes, but is not limited to returning production, returning starters, offensive and defensive schemes, the last 3 years of performance history, prior recruiting classes, and coaching changes.   Here is the top 12 teams along with my current power ratings.  Each point factor represents where each team stands above the average team rounded to .25.    The average team has a point factor of 0, so for example, Ohio State is 31.5 points better than the average team according to my ratings.  Please also remember that power ratings change throughout the year and especially after the first few games that are played.   My information on returning production is from Bill Connelly of ESPN, (formerly from SB Nation) and recruiting rankings are from 247 Sports.

So with that in mind, here is how they have the top-12 rated out.  We’ll also share their brief write-up on Notre Dame when we get there.

1. Ohio State (31.5)
2. Alabama (26)
3. Clemson (25)
4. Auburn (21)
5. Georgia (20)
6. Florida (18.5)
7. Wisconsin (18)
8. Penn State (17.75)
9. Oklahoma (17.5)
10. LSU (17)
11. Notre Dame (16)
12. Texas 15.5

OddsBreakers says of No. 11 Notre Dame:

Notre Dame lost a lot on defense but they still retain some good talent on offense minus WR Chase Claypool. The Irish always recruits well.  Ian Book is returning for his senior year and that is a good thing due to so many top tier QBs entering the draft.  Notre Dame will have a new secondary for the most part and 2 new linebackers.   I do like the Irish’s upside this year but their schedule is pretty hard playing Wisconsin in Lambeau Field, Clemson and of course USC.  If they somehow get through that gauntlet unscathed, then expect them to reach the playoffs.  Returning Production:  O66% D51%.  Recruiting: ’17 – 10th ’18 – 10th ’19 – 16th.

Just a couple of things to look at here:

Claypool is a huge loss but so is Kmet.  Maybe the writer is limited on amount of words but that’s a concern for me even if tight ends seem to produce year in and year out for Notre Dame.

It’s nice to see someone throw praise Ian Book’s way.  I know the guy is easy to shoot down and complain about but think about where your thoughts on this team would be if he wasn’t part of it and an unproven and inexperienced quarterback was starting in his spot.

The secondary is interesting to me.  Alohi Gilman was a fan favorite for good reason, when a huge play was needed he often provided it.  I’d be lying if I said I felt better about him and Kyle Hamilton together in coverage than I do about Hamilton, Isaiah Pryor and potentially Houston Griffith playing together.  That said, the loss of Troy Pride, Jr. is significant and one Notre Dame has to not let be massive.

And yes, if Notre Dame is to get wins over top-ten Wisconsin, likely pre-season number one Clemson and at USC then I also like their chances to make the College Football Playoff.

Notre Dame’s Highest “Top Early Top 25” Ranking We’ve Seen

The Irish also come in one spot behind Florida who is fresh-off an Orange Bowl victory and 11-2 season.

We tend to react when national college voices weigh in on Notre Dame gets mentioned, whether it’s good or bad.

This week you’ve seen us post a few different “Too Early Top 25” rankings that various college football writers have offered.  We reacted to one by considering firing it into the sun while the other we dissected, we pretty much fell in line with.

Now we have one that has ranked Notre Dame higher than any we’ve seen this week.

From Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde:

9. Notre Dame

There are two attractive but difficult additions to the schedule: Clemson at home and Wisconsin at Lambeau Field. Those are in addition to games at USC and Pittsburgh. But with Ian Book and most of the offensive line returning, Brian Kelly has some building blocks. There are a lot of good players to replace on defense. The recruiting consistency of the Fighting Irish will come into play there.

Notre Dame coming in at nine placed them a spot ahead of national champion LSU which may come as a shock to some.  The Irish also come in one spot behind Florida who is fresh-off an Orange Bowl victory and 11-2 season.

Three 2020 Notre Dame opponents show up on the list with Clemson being top-rated in the nation and Wisconsin checking in at 13 and USC at 16.  Simple logic leads you to understand why the November 7 showdown with Clemson could very easily be the biggest game at Notre Dame Stadium since The Game of the Century versus Florida State in 1993.
