WATCH: Sam Darnold’s mad dash gives Jets their first lead of 2020

Sam Darnold runs for a 46-yard touchdown to give the Jets their first lead of 2020.

Sam Darnold’s legs have given the Jets their first lead of the 2020 season.

On third and seven from Denver’s 46-yard line, Darnold had pressure coming his way, avoided the sack and took off for the endzone. He juked Denver’s Justin Simmons on his way to a 46-yard touchdown to give the Jets a 7-0 edge in the first quarter.

Darnold’s run was the longest ever by a Jets quarterback.

On the Jets’ first drive of the game, Darnold converted two other first downs to keep the drive alive and it resulted in a touchdown. With the Jets still thin at wide receiver, Darnold has to do what he can in order to jumpstart an offense that has struggled mightily this season.

Maybe Darnold’s touchdown run will give the offense a spark the rest of the way.

Jets make 6 roster moves before Thursday’s game vs. Broncos

The Jets made a handful of roster moves ahead of Thursday’s game against the Broncos.

The Jets made a handful of roster moves ahead of Thursday night’s game against the Denver Broncos.

New York announced it has activated wide receiver Jeff Smith off of injured reserve, signed defensive back Javelin Guidry from the practice squad and promoted wide receiver Lawrence Cager and defensive back Lamar Jackson to the active roster. The Jets also released quarterback Mike White and cornerback Nate Hairston.

Smith was getting first-team reps in training camp before going down with a shoulder injury. With Smith and Jamison Crowder back, Sam Darnold will have some better options to throw to on Thursday.

As for Guidry, the Jets really liked how he performed in training camp and signed him to their practice squad. He had the second-fastest 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine behind WR Henry Ruggs.

Cager played against the Colts last week and had two catches for 35 yards in his NFL debut. Thursday will be Jackson’s NFL debut if he gets in on the action. With Hairston being released and two cornerbacks being added to the roster, it looks like the Jets will make some changes to their struggling secondary.

The release of White means Joe Flacco will be Darnold’s backup on Thursday. Flacco missed the first three games, as he was coming back from offseason neck surgery.

Jets injury report: Jamison Crowder, George Fant to return vs. Broncos

Jamison Crowder and George Fant are expected to play Thursday night against the Broncos.

The Jets are getting some reinforcements back from injury for Thursday’s game against the Denver Broncos.

Jamison Crowder (hamstring) and George Fant (concussion) are expected to make their return Thursday night. Crowder was limited in practice all week, while Fant practiced fully on Wednesday. Crowder is listed as questionable for Thursday’s game.

Other players listed as questionable include Jordan Jenkins (shoulder), Chris Hogan (ribs/knee), John Franklin-Myers (knee) and Mekhi Becton (shoulder). All are expected to be available, though.

Jordan Willis (ankle) and Ashtyn Davis (concussion) are listed as doubtful, while Breshad Perriman (ankle) is out.

As for the Broncos, Drew Lock (shoulder) is out as expected, as is Jeremiah Attaochu (quadriceps). Phillip Lindsay (foot) and Davontae Harris (hamstring) are questionable.

Report: Jets RB Le’Veon Bell hopes to return Week 5 vs. Cardinals

Le’Veon Bell has his eyes set on Week 5 to return from his hamstring injury.

Le’Veon Bell wants to play as soon he’s eligible to come off of short-term injured reserve.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Bell would like to return to the Jets’ lineup in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals. Bell is eligible to be removed from short-term IR and rejoin the Jets’ active roster in Week 5.

Bell injured his hamstring in Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills. He went out for a pass and slipped, causing him to injure his hamstring late in the first half. Bell came back out for the second half; Adam Gase decided to pull the plug on him in the third quarter. After the game, Gase said he wished he had not put Bell back in the game.

The 28-year-old running back was highly motivated entering the 2020 season. He felt this year was going to be the best year of his career. Bell used the entire offseason to get his body in better shape after he admitted that he didn’t feel great in 2019.

The Jets desperately need some playmakers on offense. While Bell isn’t nearly the same player he once was, he’s still better than what the Jets have been running out there over the past couple of weeks. Frank Gore has been carrying the load in Bell’s absence, but there’s only so much a 37-year-old running back can do at this point in his career.

So if Bell does indeed return in Week 5, it should be a big boost to the Jets offense.

Jets injury report: New York gets good news on Mekhi Becton’s shoulder

Mekhi Becton’s MRI came back better than expected and there’s a chance he’ll play on Thursday against Denver.

The Jets finally caught an injury break, and not a literal one.

Adam Gase said Monday that Mekhi Becton’s MRI on his shoulder came back better than expected. Becton is considered day-to-day and there’s a chance he can play on Thursday against the Denver Broncos. If Becton can’t go, Connor McDermott will start at left tackle for the Jets. Either way, this is better news than expected after Becton left’s Sunday’s game against the Colts and didn’t return.

Elsewhere, Jordan Jenkins is also day-to-day with a shoulder injury. Like Becton, there’s a possibility Jenkins plays on Thursday. Gase said that it will be hard to hold Jenkins out.

As for Jamison Crowder (hamstring), he’ll go through walkthroughs this week and the Jets will make a determination on his status after that. Breshad Perriman (ankle) is still out.

George Fant and Quincy Wilson are still in concussion protocol. They will have to clear protocol in order to play on Thursday. Ashtyn Davis (groin) could go through walkthroughs this week, while Jordan Willis (ankle) is unlikely to play on Thursday.

Mekhi Becton out for remainder of game vs. Colts

Mekhi Becton is for the rest of the Jets’ game against the Colts with a shoulder injury.

The Jets don’t have a lot of things going for them in 2020, but Mekhi Becton was the one sure thing. He is now injured.

New York announced that Becton is out for the rest of Sunday’s game against the Colts with a shoulder injury. Connor McDermott is in at left tackle for the injured Becton.

The Jets now have both their backup tackles in the game with Chuma Edoga in for George Fant, who was ruled out before the game with a concussion.

Becton has been one of the few positives for the Jets this season. He’s been an absolute stud at left tackle in his first couple of games in the NFL. Becton has made highlight-reel pancakes and has done a solid job protecting Sam Darnold’s blindside.

Becton’s loss is huge for the Jets, even if it’s just the rest of this game. All the Jets can hope for is that it’s a minor shoulder injury and Becton won’t be out for too long.

Jets only NFL team without a lead through 2 games

The Jets are the only team in the NFL to not have a lead in a game this season.

No NFL team can say they’re doing what the Jets are doing offensively through the first two games of the regular season. That’s not a credit to Gang Green, though.

The Jets are the only team in the NFL to not have a lead in a game so far this season, as noted by ESPN’s Rich Cimini. Every other NFL team has had a lead at one point or another, but not Adam Gase’s squad.

That little factoid speaks volumes as to how bad the Jets have been. In the Jets’ first game against the Bills, they quickly fell behind 21-0 and failed to crawl back into the game. They got as close as 10 points, but the final score, 27-17, made the result look better than the performance.

In Week 2 against the 49ers, the Jets only trailed 7-3 after the first quarter. However, it got ugly after that, with the 49ers scoring two second-quarter touchdowns to go up 21-3 at the half. The Jets did score 10 points in the second half, but it was too little too late, as the 49ers throttled the Jets, 31-13.

New York can’t keep putting itself in deep holes to open up games. The Jets simply don’t have a good enough offense to make up points in a hurry. The Jets have averaged 15 points in their first two games, which is 31st in the NFL.

The Jets have to get off to faster starts in Sunday’s contest against the Colts. They may not win the game in the end, but at least they can say they had a lead at some point in a game if they begin the game by getting some quick points on the board.

Jets sign WR Josh Malone to active roster, place CB Arthur Maulet on IR

The Jets have signed Josh Malone to the active roster and placed Arthur Maulet on injured reserve.

After being called up from the practice squad twice, the Jets officially signed Josh Malone to the active roster.

New York announced on Tuesday that it has signed Malone to the 53-man roster and placed CB Arthur Maulet on injured reserve. In addition, the Jets released Paul Worrilow from their practice squad.

Under the new practice squad rules, the Jets were allowed to bring Malone up to the gameday roster twice and then send him back down to the practice squad without him being subject to waivers. Since Malone has played two games though, he was subject to waivers.

The Jets now have three healthy wide receivers on the active roster. Along with Malone, the Jets have Chris Hogan and Braxton Berrios. Jamison Crowder is still a question mark for this week with a hamstring injury, while Breshad Perriman is week-to-week with an ankle injury.

As for Maulet, he has to miss at least the next three games under the new injured reserve rules. So the Jets are down to four healthy cornerbacks with Quincy Wilson having a concussion.

The Jets could promote a cornerback from the practice squad to take Maulet’s spot. Javelin Guidry, Lamar Jackson and Zane Lewis are the three cornerbacks on the Jets’ practice squad.

Jets WR Breshad Perriman week-to-week with sprained ankle, Chris Hogan avoids serious injury

Breshad Perriman is week-to-week with a sprained ankle.

The New York Jets will be without their No. 1 wide receiver for at least a couple of weeks.

Breshad Perriman suffered a sprained ankle on Sunday against the 49ers and is considered week-to-week, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Perriman exited Sunday’s game in the second quarter with two receptions for 12 yards.

This is Perriman’s second injury since joining the Jets. He suffered a knee injury in training camp that kept him sidelined for a few weeks. Perriman signed a one-year deal worth $8 million with New York in the offseason.

Despite their recent string of bad luck on the injury front, the Jets seemed to have caught a break with Chris Hogan. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Hogan left Sunday’s game with a rib injury, but nothing is broken and all indications are he will be good to go against the Colts this weekend.

With Hogan avoiding a serious injury, the Jets are down to three healthy wide receivers. Along with Hogan, New York has Braxton Berrios and Josh Malone. Jamison Crowder missed Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury and it is unknown if he will return in Week 3.

The Jets’ options are limited in terms of adding a wide receiver. On the practice squad, they have Lawerence Cager and D.J. Montgomery. Donte Moncrief is also on the practice squad, but is currently dealing with an injury that landed him on the practice squad injured reserve.

Quinnen Williams’ 2-sack afternoon makes him Jets Wire’s Player of the Game vs. 49ers

Williams was the lone bright spot of a Jets defense that looked underprepared, undisciplined, and outright overmatched.

Quinnen Williams was just about the only Jet that showed up for New York’s 31-13 loss to the 49ers on Sunday.

Williams was the lone bright spot of a Jets defense that looked underprepared, undisciplined and outright overmatched against San Francisco. So, with few other players to choose from, Williams is Jets Wire’s Player of the Game for Week 2.

Williams led the Jets defense with two sacks, the most he’s ever recorded in a game in his young NFL career. He also added seven total tackles, two of which were for a loss.

The 22-year-old said this past week that he expects a lot more out of himself after a disappointing opening game against the Bills. Williams said that he was going to be “unstoppable” before the season after he used the entire offseason to get his body in better shape.

Williams is certainly getting off the ball a lot quicker this season. He is making plays in the backfield against the run and when the quarterback drops back for a pass, as we saw on Sunday. It was his sack that hurt 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo and eventually knocked him out of the game.

Last season, Williams was hampered by an ankle injury that negatively impacted his play. He didn’t have that same explosiveness that people raved about during his time at Alabama. That’s what earned him the No. 3 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, but he hardly met expectations last year.

For Williams, the hope is that Sunday’s game will serve as a confidence booster. The Jets aren’t getting much out of their defense at the moment, so to have a legit pass rusher in Williams would certainly be a big relief going forward.
