Steelers vs Niners: Nick Bosa signs massive new contract with San Francisco

It looks like the Steelers will face Nick Bosa on Sunday.

Well, any hope that the Pittsburgh Steelers wouldn’t have to see EDGE Nick Bosa on Sunday when the Steelers take on the San Francisco 49ers is probably lost. According to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport,

This contract makes Bosa the highest-paid pass rusher in the league, passing up Steelers EDGE T.J. Watt.

Bosa has held out for all of training camp and the preseason while his representatives and the Niners negotiated this deal. This is very similar to how the Steelers and Watt were the year previous with his new contract.

Bosa’s new contract resets the market for pass rushers. If Watt comes back better than ever from his injury in 2022, you can bet he will have an eye on this sooner rather than later if he decides he deserves a raise.

PFF calls former Sooner Trent Williams the best No. 4 overall draft pick since 2006

Former Sooner Trent Williams listed as the best No. 4 draft pick since 2006.

One of the most successful former Oklahoma Sooners in the NFL doesn’t even play a skill position. Trent Williams spent the 2006-2009 seasons with the Crimson and Cream. During that time he was named to first-team All-Big 12 in 2008 and 2009. He was also named a unanimous All-American in 2009 before being selected with the No. 4 pick overall in the 2010 NFL draft. That year he joined Sam Bradford and Gerald McCoy as three of the top four picks in the draft.

He spent 2010-2019 with the Washington Football Team before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers prior to the 2020 season. He recently inked a new deal to remain in the Bay area with the Niners. From 2012-2018, Williams was named to the Pro Bowl seven times and again in 2020. He was also second-team All-Pro in the 2015 season.

Pro Football Focus highlighted the former Sooner as one of the best draft picks since 2006 at particular slots. For Williams, he was the best at the No. 4 spot.

No. 4 Overall: Trent Williams, Washington Football Team

James Lang-USA TODAY Sports

When at his best, Williams is the gold standard at left tackle in the NFL. He’s peaked with seasons of 91.8 (2013), 92.7 (2016), and 91.9 (2020) overall grades over his career. If he continues that level of play over his contract in San Francisco, Williams will have put together a Hall of Fame resume.

Giants select Everson Griffen in 2010 NFL re-draft

In Bleacher Report’s 2010 NFL re-draft, the New York Giants select DE Everson Griffen with Jason Pierre-Paul already off the board.

At the 2010 NFL Draft, the New York Giants were coming off an 8-8 campaign in 2009 and were retooling their roster to make another Super Bowl run, which they did in 2011.

They held the 15th overall selection in the draft and were still trying o find a viable replacement for Michael Strahan, who retired after the Giants’ remarkable upset of the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII in 2007.

They chose South Florida defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, a raw but insanely gifted athlete, with the 15th pick. JPP, as he would come to be known, would make an immediate impact on the Giants’ defense and became an All-Pro in 2011 when he recorded 16.5 sacks.

Along with Justin Tuck, JPP became one of the leaders on the Giant defense that defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. He continued to excel for the next several seasons.

Then, in the summer of 2015, things changed. JPP suffered a severe hand injury as the result of a July 4 fireworks accident and lost partial use of his right hand. He played the second half of that season with his had in a club-like bandage and a protective glove. He wasn’t the same player.

The Giants still believed, however. General manager Jerry Reese signed JPP to a four-year, $62 million deal in March of 2017. Most fans a experts panned the move.

When Reese was fired later that year, incoming general manager Dave Gettleman evaluated the situation and decided to trade Pierre-Paul and his huge cap hit. He traded JPP to Tampa Bay for a third round pick and an exchange of fourth rounders.

In his re-draft of the 2010 NFL Draft, Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport has JPP going off the board to Jacksonville at No. 10 and the Giants taking USC defensive lineman Everyone Griffen at 15. Griffen, incidentally, was taken in Round 4 by Minnesota.

Everson Griffen hasn’t had the monstrous years Jason Pierre-Paul has occasionally produced. He hasn’t been quite as consistent over the past decade as Carlos Dunlap. And at the moment, he’s still looking for work.

But over 10 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, Griffen piled up 74.5 sacks. He’s had three seasons with 10 or more sacks, has made four Pro Bowls (including last year) and sits fourth in franchise history in sacks, trailing just Hall of Famers John Randle and Chris Doleman and Jared Allen

As plan B’s go, it’s a pretty danged good one.

Griffen would have been a nice pick for the Giants, sure, but JPP brought the excitement, intrigue and a Super Bowl to New York.

Taylor Mays named 49ers biggest 2nd-round bust of last 20 years

The 49ers took a big swing on Taylor Mays in the 2nd round of the draft, and he became their biggest 2nd-round bust of the last 20 years.

Draft busts are part of life in the NFL. While failed first-round picks tend to get the ‘bust’ label, picks from the second round that fail can have an equally adverse impact. Our friends at Touchdown Wire took a look at the worst second-round bust for each team since 2000.

For the 49ers, it was USC safety Taylor Mays.

San Francisco selected Mays No. 49 overall in the 2010 draft. Mays blew up the combine with a 4.31 40-yard dash, a 41-inch vertical and a 125-inch broad jump. He did all of that at 6-3, 220 pounds.

During his days at USC, Mays looked the part of a future Hall of Famer. The workout numbers only confirmed that.

San Francisco was on the edge of playoff contention in 2010, and Mays appeared to be the player that was going to help elevate their defense to an elite level.

He wound up starting only six games, and his most notable play came in a loss to Atlanta his rookie year when he recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown.

The 49ers wound up trading Mays to the Bengals for a 2013 seventh-round pick before his second season.

San Francisco wound up going to the NFC championship game the three years after trading Mays, so the swing and miss wasn’t a huge organizational setback.

However, Mays’ athleticism and failure to translate that to success in the NFL was extremely disappointing.

On a list that includes LaMichael James, Chilo Rachal and Tank Carradine, Mays stands out above them all.

Gerald McCoy sends best wishes to ‘future stars of the NFL’ ahead of the draft

Former Bucs DT Gerald McCoy took to Instagram today to post a video and send best wishes to players ahead of Thursday’s NFL draft.

Gerald McCoy is now a member of the Dallas Cowboys, after spending last season in Carolina with the Panthers. Before that, however, he spent the first nine years of his career as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Bucs selected McCoy out of Oklahoma with the third pick in the 2010 NFL draft, and he was a staple for the franchise for nearly a decade. While McCoy won’t be a part of the revamped Tom Brady-led Bucs, he’ll always be thought of first and foremost as a Buccaneer.

McCoy took to Instagram today to post a video of his draft moment back in 2010, while sending blessings to all the future stars of the NFL ahead of Thursday’s virtual draft.

Fun fact: The player selected ahead of McCoy in 2010 was current Bucs DT Ndamukong Suh, who went second overall to the Detroit Lions.

Off to the NFL Draft

Utah State junior linebacker David Woodward is giving up his final year of eligibility and is declaring for the NFL Draft.

“I want to thank my family, teammates, coaches and friends who have helped me during my football career,” said Woodward. “After spending four great years at Utah State University it is time for me to move on and chase my dream of playing professional football. Therefore, I will forgo my senior season and declare for the 2020 NFL Draft.”

“David Woodward is a tremendous football player and he gave everything he had to the program and his teammates during his time here,” said USU head coach Gary Anderson. “David will be successful in whatever he chooses to do in life. Go Aggies!”

Woodward’s 2019 season was cut short after seven games due to a knee injury and played only seven games. Despite appearing in just over half of the games he put up numbers good enough to earn first-team All-Mountain West, plus he led the team with 93 tackles to go along with a pair of sacks and five tackles for a loss.

Woodward broke out in his sophomore where he was one of the best linebackers in the country in 2018, per Pro Football Focus.

For his career in Logan, Woodward earned a team-best 256 tackles, which includes eight sacks and an impressive 20.5 tackles for loss. He also forced six fumbles, and he posted 15 double-digit tackle games in his career.

He follows in the footsteps of his teammate quarterback Jordan Love who also is entering the draft and will not be back in 2020.
