West Virginia (3-1) vs Texas Tech (1-3) Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

Not everything has been perfect, and there’s a loss to Oklahoma State on the record, but the team is 3-1 and playing far better overall than it did in Year One under head coach Neal Brown.

It helps that there’s an offense.

The pass rush has been fantastic, the run defense has been a rock, and the D is one of the best in the nation at coming up with third down stops. That’s all great, but can the team handle big-time passing games?

It hasn’t faced anything like Texas Tech’s air show yet, but the pass rush is strong enough to at least hurry things up a little bit. Texas Tech – by its style and very nature – doesn’t allow a whole slew of sacks, but it helps to hurry things up a bit.

CFN Experts Picks: College

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Alright Henry Colombi, let’s see what you can do.

The junior quarterback from Florida started out his career with Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells at Utah State, and transferred over to the Red Raiders after not seeing a whole lot of work last year with the Aggies.

With Alan Bowman banged up, Columbi has been able to step in and make the O go, hitting 74% of his passes for 359 yards and three scores, and he adds a little bit of a rushing element to the mix.

No matter who’s been at quarterback, the offense has worked, turnovers haven’t been a huge problem, and the team was one key defensive stop away from being 2-2 with a win over Texas. However …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Texas Tech defense has been awful.

How do you want to move the ball? Give it a shot, and it’ll probably work.

West Virginia’s ground game is good enough to take over right away – it at least has to give it a shot – but Jarret Doege and the passing attack have been good, too. Unlike last year, the Mountaineers are better equipped to keep up.

Texas Tech desperately needs the home win, but West Virginia is too good on the defensive front and will be too strong at controlling the clock. The Mountaineers will go on long enough marches to keep Columbi and company on the sidelines.

Kansas (0-3) vs West Virginia (2-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Kansas Will Win

So what is Kansas doing right?

It’s been a rough run all the way around over the first three games, but there is a running game there that has to keep being fed. It’s not hitting four yards per carry, but there’s talent in the backfield with Velton Gardner and Pooka Williams who need the ball in their hands.

Run, keep running, and try to control the clock. Kansas isn’t getting hammered in the time of possession battle and it’s not turning the ball over enough to matter, but …

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Kansas lines have been awful.

The offensive front isn’t consistently doing enough for the excellent backs, it’s not doing much of anything in pass protection, and the defensive front isn’t getting into the backfield. The Jayhawks have generated just three sacks and 15 tackles for loss so far – they’re just not generating enough big plays.

KU is dead-last among all Big 12 teams in total offense, West Virginia leads the conference in total defense. The pass rush is solid, the secondary has been great, and there won’t be the passing game from the Jayhawks to be a problem.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas hasn’t had any fun, with the biggest problem the health of head coach Les Miles after he tested positive for COVID-19. He’s doing okay, but he obviously has had more important things to deal with.

On the field, Kansas doesn’t have enough pop to the offense to push through a Mountaineer defense that’s 2-0 when allowing 75 rushing yards or fewer and gave up 203 yards in the loss to Oklahoma State.

Kansas isn’t getting to 200 yards and it’s not going to be able to control the game like it’ll need to.

Baylor (1-0) vs West Virginia (1-1) Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

With the “it was against Kansas” caveat, Baylor was terrific in the opener of the Dave Aranda era after getting into a groove in the second half.

Yes, the passing game could’ve been a little crisper, and yes, the running game wasn’t amazing, but the defense lived in the Jayhawk backfield and clamped down on everything after getting down 7-0 in the 47-14 win.

It’s still going to be a process with all of the new parts, but as last week’s West Virginia loss to Oklahoma State showed, the other side isn’t exactly rolling, either.

There’s little to no Mountaineer running game to worry about. Leddie Brown ran for 104 yards against the Cowboys, but that was offset by a whole slew of sacks and other issues. As long as Baylor can keep QB Jarret Doege from getting into a comfortable groove, the D will be just fine.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why West Virginia Will Win

West Virginia has to come out slinging.

Kansas was able to get a wee bit of a passing game going, but not enough of one. The Mountaineers have the receivers and Doege is a decent veteran passer, and at home they all have to click from the start.

Winston Wright and TJ Simmons are a strong receiving tandem, and for all the problems the O line had against Oklahoma State, Leddie Brown really was strong.

This is a better West Virginia team than the one that showed up in Stillwater last week.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Can the West Virginia offensive line hold up? It was swarmed over by Oklahoma State last week, there were way too many penalties, and the defensive front had too many problems against the run.

It’ll be a fun, tight game with West Virginia coming up with just enough explosive plays to offset all the problems against the Bear defensive front.

West Virginia (1-0) vs Oklahoma State (1-0) Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Oklahoma State offense that was expected to be among the nation’s most dangerous stalled out of the gate. Starting QB Spencer Sanders was knocked out early against Tulsa with an ankle injury, and it took a 13-point fourth quarter to get by 16-7.

Meanwhile, West Virginia rolled up 42 first half points in a blowout scrimmage over Eastern Kentucky with all the parts working just fine.

It was EKU, but it was still a good showing by a Mountaineer offense that needed to show that it could actually do something like it did two weeks ago. Defensively, West Virginia has the defensive front to keep OSU RB Chuba Hubbard from going off, and again, the quarterback situation is a question mark.

Week 4 Expert Picks: College Football

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Oklahoma State is better than that.

It was a rocky opening in a weird year, and it took a whole lot of work to get by an okay Tulsa team, but the Cowboys played poorly and still got the win.

Chalk it up to an opening day funk.

West Virginia’s offense has the experience and talent to be far better, but it’s still going to have to prove it can produce against a good defense. Lost in the rough performance against the Golden Hurricane was a strong day from the Oklahoma State D that held down a dangerous attack.

On the positive side, PK Alex Hale hit all three of his field goals, promising young QB prospect Shane Illingworth was great after being thrown into the fire, and the talent is still there to explode.

But …

Week 3 Expert Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Hubbard was held to 106 yards and no touchdowns – the only time all regular season he didn’t score – in a 20-13 Oklahoma State win, and this year’s West Virginia team is a whole lot better.

West Virginia will press and make things even tougher for Oklahoma State than Tulsa did, but the Cowboy offense will be a whole lot sharper and crisper. It’ll have to win in the fourth quarter again, but it’ll get it done in a fun battle.

West Virginia (0-0) vs. Eastern Kentucky (0-1) Game Preview

Why Eastern Kentucky Will Win

Making lemonade time out of a 59-0 loss – Eastern Kentucky got a game under its belt to work out the kinks.

There wasn’t any luck defensively against Marshall – and the offense couldn’t get anything going – but this is a far better team than it showed in Huntington.

The hope has to be for the West Virginia offense that struggled throughout last year – to be kind to the Big 12’s worst O – to need a little while to get the offensive front going, and it has to hope for the running game that did next to nothing to continue to sputter.

CFN Preview 2020: Every Team Preview, Rankings, Predictions

Why West Virginia Will Win

This should be a much, much better Mountaineer team than last year’s version.

The defense shouldn’t have any problems with a Colonel offense that managed just 166 total yards and three first downs against the Thundering Herd – the defensive front will live behind the EKU line – but it’ll be the offense that wakes up.

QB Jarret Doege will push the ball down the field to stretch things out a bit – this was a big, big problem last year – and there really will be a ground game after only coming up with more than 100 yards twice.

West Virginia will run for over 200 yards for the first time in the last 17 games.

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 2

What’s Going To Happen

Again, Eastern Kentucky is better than whatever that was that showed up against Marshall – but it’s not going to show it against West Virginia.

It’ll take a few drives for the Mountaineers to look like a whole new team under head coach Neal Brown in his second year. It might be against an FCS team, but after struggling so much throughout last season – and after going 5-12 in the last 17 games – the West Virginia fans will enjoy the moment.

College Football 2020: 5 (Potentially) Stupid Big 12 Predictions

Five bold, crazy, stupid, daring, wacky Big 12 college football predictions for the 2020 season.

Five bold, crazy, stupid, daring, wacky Big 12 college football predictions for the 2020 season.

5 (Potentially) Stupid Big 12 Predictions

As if everything we’re going through in the college football world – and in real life – isn’t stupid enough, let’s take it all down a few levels.

What if you were told last year at this time that Baylor was going to play for the Big 12 Championship?

What if you were told that Jalen Hurts would be one of the most efficient passers in the history of college football? What if you were told that eight of the ten teams – including Texas – would fail to hit the nine-win mark for the season?

[jwplayer 8TZC4fkD]

What if you were told last year at this time that Matt Rhule would have an NFL job – hardly a shocker – but Lincoln Riley was still going to be in Norman?

They’re the wild and wacky curveballs that make each season fun. Enough safe and sane, it’s time for dumb and dangerous with five (potentially) stupid predictions thrown at the wall to see if they stick.

To keep this fun, this entire Stick To Sports piece is in a safe, COVID-19-free bubble.

5. The Big 12 will lose two non-conference games

It’s going to take some work for the Big 12 to biff two or more of their Plus-1 games.

Each Big 12 team gets one non-conference tune-up game before diving into the nine-game conference run, and let’s just say no one is exactly pushing the envelope.

Let’s just give Texas Tech (Houston Baptist), West Virginia (Eastern Kentucky), TCU (Tennessee Tech), Texas (UTEP), and Oklahoma (Missouri State) the benefit of doubt and chalk up wins for all of them.

And that’s fine. With no preseason, all college teams are insane to not schedule a winnable game to work out all the kinks. Unless something crazier than even 2020 can throw at the Big 12, assume 5-0 out of that group.

And 3-2 from the other five.

2020 Big 12 Preseason Rankings

Tulsa has a potentially amazing offense that might come up with something special on the right day against Oklahoma State, but nah – the Cowboys will win that. However …

Be very, very careful of the opening of the Dave Aranda era at Baylor with a dangerous Louisiana Tech team coming into Waco.

Ha ha ha, Kansas gets Coastal Carolina to start. Yeah, the Chanticleers won 12-7 on its trip last year to Lawrence.

Arkansas State absolutely has the chops to pull off something fantastic in Manhattan against Kansas State, and watch out for a dangerous Louisiana team with the offense, coaching and firepower to upset Iowa State.

NEXT: The quarterbacks …
