Big 12 Predictions: New additions open conference play with big tests

New Big 12 additions face stiff challenges in a full week of conference action. Here are this week’s Big 12 predictions.

It was a rough go for the Big 12 last week. Iowa State lost to Ohio, Kansas State lost to Missouri, Cincinnati lost to Miami (OH.), and Oklahoma State lost to South Alabama.

The conference did pick up big wins, with BYU beating Arkansas and West Virginia taking down Pitt in the Backyard Brawl.

TCU got the first conference win of the season when they beat Houston. This week, three of the new Big 12 squads face significant tests, with Cincinnati hosting Oklahoma, BYU traveling to face Kansas, and UCF in Manhattan to take on Kansas State.

We’ll find out a lot more about the Big 12 and how each team stacks up after this weekend.

Here are this week’s Big 12 predictions.

Week 3: 8-5

2023 Overall: 29-12

Big 12 opener, Backyard Brawl, Big 12-SEC matchups highlight Predictions for week 3

Big 12 play begins in week three but an in-state battle highlights this week’s conference picks.

This week in the Big 12, there are some really intriguing matchups.

There are four in-state contests taking place, two Big 12-SEC matchups, the renewal of the Backyard Brawl, a border rivalry game, and two Big 12 squads looking to pick up their first wins of the season.

How have we done through the first two weeks of the season? Well, after a rough week one, we rallied in week two.

Week 2: 12-2

Overall: 21-7

Get ready for Saturday with this week’s Big 12 predictions.

Final game-by-game predictions for the Texas football season

Let’s predict the 2023 season for Texas after offseason developments.

There’s only one more Saturday without college football before the 2023 season kicks off. Our opinions are starting to solidify.

We recently shared our standings prediction, but given Iowa State’s betting scandal our prediction changes. We don’t think the Cyclones will beat the Longhorns without an experienced starting quarterback. And there’s a real possibility that’s what Iowa State will be up against when game planning to defeat Texas.

There are only a handful of games Texas could lose given roster depth and talent advantages. The Longhorns’ most likely losses would come against Alabama, Baylor and TCU on the road, Oklahoma on a neutral site and Kansas State and Texas Tech at home. Some of those games are still extremely unlikely losses.

Let’s predict the 2023 season for Texas.

Past failures indicate Texas’ 2023 hopes fall on offensive efficiency

Efficiency is all that stands between Texas and a Big 12 title.

Texas lost five games last year on the football field. Each loss was uniquely its own in style. Continue reading “Past failures indicate Texas’ 2023 hopes fall on offensive efficiency”

Looking at how Texas football will navigate a tough November slate

A tough November could determine whether or not Texas reaches 10 wins this season.

The Texas football program begins a crucial 2023 season in just over three months. In many ways this has to be the year the Longhorns break through. For starters, Texas’ Steve Sarkisian has yet to win 10 games as a head coach. More than that, he has a program loaded and ready to win now.

We’ve written extensively on what Texas returns, but less about what the program could lose after this season. While the offense could lose a good amount of upperclassmen, it should be in good hands after this season. The defense could be a different story.

The Longhorns’ secondary is comprised of four seniors with Jalen Catalon, Ryan Watts, Jerrin Thompson and Jahdae Barron. The experience is a huge advantage for the current squad, but one that could cause next year’s team to struggle. For that reason, Texas needs to win now. To do so, the team needs to make it through a tough November slate.

It’s very possible Texas starts the season 8-0. I’ve predicted as much and believe the team matches up well enough with the first eight teams to secure wins. After that comes the gauntlet of potential upsets. Texas hosts Kansas State and Texas Tech while traveling to TCU and Iowa State.

Let’s break down each of the final four matchups of the year.

Josh Pate: “Texas looks like the best team in the Big 12”

“They are the odds on favorite to win the Big 12 this year. And they SHOULD be the favorite this year.”

Don’t overthink the Big 12. Texas is the best team in the conference. Continue reading “Josh Pate: “Texas looks like the best team in the Big 12””

College football analyst leans toward Texas to win the Big 12 in 2023

Texas is the Big 12 favorite, but who is the biggest challenger?

Talking season is ramping up another level as spring football nears its end. The Texas Longhorns are just a week away from the Orange and White game.

Texas is a trending conference title pick for the conference though many will have reservations in choosing the team. As recently as 2020, the Longhorns were tabbed as contenders to unseat the Oklahoma Sooners. Behind veteran stars in quarterback Sam Ehlinger, left tackle Sam Cosmi and edge rusher Joseph Ossai the team looked like a clear contender. Texas started 2-2 and ultimately missed the Big 12 title game.

Unlike that team, there are two identifiable holes (linebacker and edge rusher) for Texas heading into 2023. We anticipate Anthony Hill and David Gbenda to answer the linebacker question. One analyst isn’t too concerned about the Longhorns’ roster either.

Ian Boyd of Inside Texas is leaning heavily toward the Longhorns to win the Big 12 this season. The question is, who will challenge the team from earning the title?

Texas returns 10 of 11 starters on offense. The team now boasts elite talents in wide receivers Xavier Worthy, AD Mitchell and Isaiah Neyor along with two dangerous chains movers in Ja’Tavion Sanders and Jordan Whittington. They can also claim perhaps their best offensive line in a decade and a half.

Here are a few of Boyd’s thoughts on the league.

Combined Big 12 football predictions have Texas as the 2023 favorite

We combine three Big 12 standings predictions to see where Texas lands.

There’s strength in numbers. That phrase is true in multiple facets of life, but certainly in forming informed opinions in college football. Continue reading “Combined Big 12 football predictions have Texas as the 2023 favorite”
