College Football 2020: 5 (Potentially) Stupid Big 12 Predictions

Five bold, crazy, stupid, daring, wacky Big 12 college football predictions for the 2020 season.

Five bold, crazy, stupid, daring, wacky Big 12 college football predictions for the 2020 season.

5 (Potentially) Stupid Big 12 Predictions

As if everything we’re going through in the college football world – and in real life – isn’t stupid enough, let’s take it all down a few levels.

What if you were told last year at this time that Baylor was going to play for the Big 12 Championship?

What if you were told that Jalen Hurts would be one of the most efficient passers in the history of college football? What if you were told that eight of the ten teams – including Texas – would fail to hit the nine-win mark for the season?

[jwplayer 8TZC4fkD]

What if you were told last year at this time that Matt Rhule would have an NFL job – hardly a shocker – but Lincoln Riley was still going to be in Norman?

They’re the wild and wacky curveballs that make each season fun. Enough safe and sane, it’s time for dumb and dangerous with five (potentially) stupid predictions thrown at the wall to see if they stick.

To keep this fun, this entire Stick To Sports piece is in a safe, COVID-19-free bubble.

5. The Big 12 will lose two non-conference games

It’s going to take some work for the Big 12 to biff two or more of their Plus-1 games.

Each Big 12 team gets one non-conference tune-up game before diving into the nine-game conference run, and let’s just say no one is exactly pushing the envelope.

Let’s just give Texas Tech (Houston Baptist), West Virginia (Eastern Kentucky), TCU (Tennessee Tech), Texas (UTEP), and Oklahoma (Missouri State) the benefit of doubt and chalk up wins for all of them.

And that’s fine. With no preseason, all college teams are insane to not schedule a winnable game to work out all the kinks. Unless something crazier than even 2020 can throw at the Big 12, assume 5-0 out of that group.

And 3-2 from the other five.

2020 Big 12 Preseason Rankings

Tulsa has a potentially amazing offense that might come up with something special on the right day against Oklahoma State, but nah – the Cowboys will win that. However …

Be very, very careful of the opening of the Dave Aranda era at Baylor with a dangerous Louisiana Tech team coming into Waco.

Ha ha ha, Kansas gets Coastal Carolina to start. Yeah, the Chanticleers won 12-7 on its trip last year to Lawrence.

Arkansas State absolutely has the chops to pull off something fantastic in Manhattan against Kansas State, and watch out for a dangerous Louisiana team with the offense, coaching and firepower to upset Iowa State.

2020 Preseason CFN Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year

RB Chuba Hubbard, Jr. Oklahoma State
Texas QB Sam Ehlinger, Iowa State QB Brock Purdy, and maybe there’s a shot for Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler to rise up fast – this is a quarterback league and there are plenty of options to step up and be the star of the season.

But it’s Hubbard who should be the signature star for an Oklahoma State team that should be in for a massive season. The 6-1, 207-pound back has to hold up after handling the ball over 350 times last season, but he’s tough, fast, and he should get a whole lot more national exposure coming off a 2,094-yard, 21 touchdown campaign.

2020 Preseason CFN Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year

DT Darius Stills, Sr. West Virginia
Or Dante Stills. Flip a coin between the two Stills, and you might have the strongest defensive player in the Big 12. No matter what, West Virginia has a whale of an interior between these two.

The 6-3, 295-pound Dante came up with seven sacks with 11.5 tackles for loss, and Darius made 47 tackles with seven sacks and a team-high 15 tackles for loss. They’re both active, they’re both going to show off next-level skills and they’re both going to be in for big seasons.

Texas Longhorns Sweep Their Way Through PV Tournament

The Texas Longhorns softball team finished the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge with their perfect record intact.

The Texas Longhorns softball team swept a triple-header on Friday in the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. Texas was back on the mound for a double-header that included an exhibition match against the Mexican National Team. They dropped that game 5-4 after a wild eight inning. Texas had the bases loaded but hit into a triple-play to end that strong effort. They gave up a sac fly in the bottom of the eight for the walk-off.

In the night cap of the double-header, Texas would take on the Ole Miss Rebels. Miranda Elish took the ball and proceeded to pitch a complete game where she gave up just one unearned run in the 7th. Elish improved to 4-0 on the season giving up just three hits and striking out seven.

Kaitlyn Washington’s RBI ground out in the second got Texas on the board, Kaitlyn Slack singled to drive in Mary Iakopo to make it 2-0. In the third inning the Longhorns extended the lead to 4-0 when Iakopo single that scored two unearned runs. Texas is now 10-0 on the season and three players picked up some tournament hardware.

The Longhorns will host the North Texas Mean Green on Wednesday ahead of the Texas Invitational next weekend.

Texas Softball Sweeps Triple Header, Hands Utah First Loss

The Texas Longhorns softball team remain red hot, sweeping a triple header and improving to 9-0 on the season.

The Texas Longhorns game into the weekend riding a 6-0 start. They would face California Baptist in their first game of the day. Red hot Miranda Elish would cool down going 0-3 in the first game, leaving two on base. Courtney Day would take the mound in this game and would go the distance. She pitched seven scoreless innings for the Longhorns striking out four and allowing four hits.

Caitlyn Lloyd would hit a triple but wasn’t ever able to get home. Day scored the first run for Texas in the second inning when catcher Colleen Sullivan drove her in. Sullivan wouldn’t be done there as she came in clutch in game two. Leadoff hitter Reagan Hathaway drove in two more runs in the fourth and came around to score on a Janae Jefferson double. The Longhorns win the first of two, 4-0. Day improved to 2-0.

The first time this season the Longhorns found themselves in the hole in a game. The Utah Utes were able to get to starter Shealyn O’Leary in the 4th inning. Due to a throwing error, the Utes got one run across the plate to give the Longhorns their first real deficit of the season. Again in the 5th inning, the Utes scored another unearned run to go up 2-0, the Longhorns were held scoreless heading into the 7th inning.

Kaitlyn Slack got the scoring starting with a home run off starter Halle Morris who had pitched six scoreless inning up to that point. Hathaway followed up with another home run to tie the game off relief pitcher Sydney Sandez. Sullivan came to the plate with Jefferson on second to walk it off in the bottom of the 7th to remain perfect on the season.

In their third game on the day, Miranda Elish would dominate the 12th ranked Tennessee Volunteers. Elish didn’t much run support in this game but received more than she needed in the first inning. After scoring just seven combined runs in the first two game, the offense exploded for an eight-run bottom of the first. Vols starting pitcher Kiki Milloy lasted just 0.2 of an inning giving up six runs on four hits.

Courtney Day would hit her first home run on the season to put Texas up 10-0, they added another run in the third on a RBI single by Shannon Rhodes to go up 11-0, Elish handled the rest. She pitched five scoreless innings and the game was run ruled to give Elish her third victory. Texas finished the day with a 9-0 record.

College Softball Rankings: Texas currently top 10 team in nation

Texas softball is off to a hot start with an undefeated record, positioning them as a Top 10 team in the nation.

Texas softball is off to a hot start with an undefeated record.

According to the 2020 USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll, Texas is ranked the No. 6 team in the nation. This particular poll is voted on by 32 NCAA Division I head coaches, one from each conference.

These particular records reflect games played through Feb. 10, 2020.

No. 1 – Washington – 5-0

No. 2 – Oklahoma – 4-0

No. 3 – UCLA – 6-0

No. 4 – Arizona – 5-0

No. 5 – Florida State – 5-0

No. 6 – Texas – 6-0

No. 7 – LSU – 5-0

No. 8 – Florida – 4-1

No. 9 – Alabama – 1-3

No. 10 – Kentucky – 4-0

While Texas remained at the same spot as the preseason poll, they are just one point away from jumping Florida State for the No. 5 spot.

Texas hosted six games last week for the Texas Classic. Led by senior pitcher Miranda Elish, the Longhorns have surrendered just eight runs while outscoring their opponents 60-6 in the process.

Elish was named Big 12 Player of the Week, leads the conference with 17 RBIs. Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech are the only four Big 12 teams to crack the Top 25 rankings.

Way Too Early 2020 Big 12 Predictions

UT will be expected to be at the top of the Big 12 in 2020. Here are some way too early predictions for how the conference will shake out.

The 2019 Big 12 season ended the same way it did for the past five years, with Oklahoma winning the conference. This year, it was against Baylor in the conference championship game, after facing TCU and Texas in previous seasons. While much might not change at the very top, there should be some shakeup throughout the rest of the Big 12.

Four different coaches will be in their second year at their respective programs, as most teams were in a rebuilding year last season. Baylor will be on the only team with a brand new coach this season, as the other four teams (Kansas, Kansas State, Texas Tech, and West Virginia) will be wanting to take the next step under the coaches. As for experienced coaches, Tom Herman, Matt Campbell, and Gary Patterson will be looking to reach the level Lincoln Riley has been at during his tenure in Norman.

Texas will be expected to compete at the very top of the conference in 2020. The goal is to make the Big 12 championship game at the very least, especially after missing out in 2019. Returning a lot of talent and hiring brand new coordinators, Herman will need to perform in order to have a successful fourth season in Austin.

Here are some way too early predictions for how Texas and the rest of the Big 12 will shake out in the 2020 football season.
