Why Baylor Will Win

The passing game continues to be be terrific.

It might not bomb away like Texas Tech’s attack or be ultra-efficient like TCU’s, but it’s connecting on 70% of its throws with Blake Shapen doing a nice job of keeping everything moving.

It’ll all work for at least 200 yards against the Mountaineers, the running game will average well over four yards per carry, and everything else will be turned over to the run defense. The Bears are allowing fewer than 100 yards per game and they’re about to make West Virginia one-dimensional.

Why West Virginia Will Win

Here comes JT Daniels.

The West Virginia ground game was a killer over the first month of the season, but it couldn’t get going in the 38-20 loss to Texas. Daniels threw for 253 yards in yet another steady performance.

This is when the air attack has to take a few more shots.

It’s a home game on a Thursday night, and it gets to go against a shaky Baylor secondary that isn’t getting enough help from the pass rush.

As long as Daniels isn’t turning the ball over and assuming he gets time, he can take on more of the workload.

What’s Going To Happen

Is West Virginia really the 10th-best team in the league?

Actually, it might be Oklahoma, but this is a chance for the Mountaineers to get back in the hunt for a bowl game after the 2-3 start.

Baylor is still talented enough to go on a run after the loss to Oklahoma State a few weeks ago, but the pass defense on the road will be a letdown. This is when a jacked up West Virginia team shows up and pulls off something big.

It’ll be tight until the end, but Daniels will come through with two fourth quarter scoring drives to get the desperately needed win.

Why Baylor Will Win

With the “it was against Kansas” caveat, Baylor was terrific in the opener of the Dave Aranda era after getting into a groove in the second half.

Yes, the passing game could’ve been a little crisper, and yes, the running game wasn’t amazing, but the defense lived in the Jayhawk backfield and clamped down on everything after getting down 7-0 in the 47-14 win.

It’s still going to be a process with all of the new parts, but as last week’s West Virginia loss to Oklahoma State showed, the other side isn’t exactly rolling, either.

There’s little to no Mountaineer running game to worry about. Leddie Brown ran for 104 yards against the Cowboys, but that was offset by a whole slew of sacks and other issues. As long as Baylor can keep QB Jarret Doege from getting into a comfortable groove, the D will be just fine.

Why West Virginia Will Win

West Virginia has to come out slinging.

Kansas was able to get a wee bit of a passing game going, but not enough of one. The Mountaineers have the receivers and Doege is a decent veteran passer, and at home they all have to click from the start.

Winston Wright and TJ Simmons are a strong receiving tandem, and for all the problems the O line had against Oklahoma State, Leddie Brown really was strong.

This is a better West Virginia team than the one that showed up in Stillwater last week.

What’s Going To Happen

Can the West Virginia offensive line hold up? It was swarmed over by Oklahoma State last week, there were way too many penalties, and the defensive front had too many problems against the run.

It’ll be a fun, tight game with West Virginia coming up with just enough explosive plays to offset all the problems against the Bear defensive front.

Why Baylor Will Win

West Virginia is collapsing.

It was 18-4, and then it all fell apart with six losses in the last seven games, including a 70-59 clunker against Baylor on the road.

The Bears hit over half of their shots from the field and the defensive clamped down with a huge first half to take control early on. What’s WVU’s problem?

It’s not hitting anything from three, it’s not making its free throws, and it’s turning the ball over way too often. Baylor’s amazing defense isn’t the one to get healthy against. It leads the Big 12 and is sixth in the nation allowing fewer than 60 points per game, and on the other side, the offense doesn’t screw up enough to make things easier.

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Baylor defense hasn’t been able to clamp down lately. Kansas and Texas Tech hit 50% or better from the field, and Kansas State and TCU were able to shoot well, too.

West Virginia has to be able to generate easy points and score on the inside.

This is just an okay defensive rebounding Baylor team, and WVU owns just about everyone on the glass. At home in a game that can – at least, should – end any NCAA Tournament concerns, this should be a ramped up and active team that will be great as always as defending from three, and it should – unlike the first meeting – win the rebounding margin.

Baylor has been just shaky enough lately for West Virginia to pounce.

It might have been a rough run lately for the Mountaineers, but they pulled up out of the nosedive against Iowa State earlier in the week, and they’ll keep it all going with an inspired performance and an energized, fun win by dominating in key moments on the glass.

Can West Virginia get that defense going?

There might be a whole lot of misses, but the team owns the boards, leading the Big 12 in rebounding margin leading the nation on the offensive glass.

As good as Baylor might be, it’s just okay on the defensive boards. The bigger problem could be from the field, needing the three to help spark the offense. WVU’s defense is outstanding at stopping teams from the outside, and it’s 14th in the nation in points allowed. It’s great at grinding games down, but …

Why Baylor Will Win

The Mountaineer offense hasn’t done enough over the run of three losses in the last five games – including the loss to Kansas a few days ago – with nothing going on from three, too many turnovers, and a few rough drive spells.

Baylor is far better on the inside at both ends – even with WVU rocking and rolling on the offensive boards – and it doesn’t screw up enough to give away too many easy points.

The Mountaineers might be great at coming up with second chance points, but the Bears are right there – the two should be relatively even in the category.

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor will make it 22 straight by clamping down on the erratic WVU attack and not getting hammered on the boards. The Mountaineer defense will be good, but the Bears will be better, especially late in the second half.
