Why West Virginia Will Win

The Oklahoma State offense has gone weird.

It was great over the first half of the season with lots of yards and without a ton of mistakes. The team was 6-1, everything was in place to be in the Big 12 Championship mix, and then it all went wrong.

Over the last month the Cowboys have gone 1-3, the offense hasn’t scored more than 20 points after not scoring fewer than 34 in the first six games, and  the turnovers kicked in with 13 in four weeks.

West Virginia’s defense hasn’t been anything special, but the offense has a decent balance, there’s no problem controlling the clock, and great things happen when the running game works.

The team is 4-0 when it runs for 200 yards or more …

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

And West Virginia is 0-7 when it doesn’t get to 200 yards. Oklahoma State allowed over 200 rushing yards just three times, and it’s 6-0 when it allows fewer than 150.

But now it’s time for the Cowboy offense to get going.

Again, the yards are there, but the points aren’t. The West Virginia defense allowed 31 points or more in six of the last seven games, and most importantly for OSU, the takeaways aren’t there with just three in the last five games.

To keep harping on this, giveaways are the massive problem. Oklahoma State can’t stop screwing up – it’s 0-3 when giving it up more than twice, but all three were on the road.

This is at home, the offense will come up with over 400 yards, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma State will get an uneven – but fun – win.

The offense might still have problems closing out drives, and the attack will stall a bit too much, but there won’t be the mistakes of the last several weeks to screw everything up.

West Virginia will keep up the pace with a good day from the passing game, but the defense won’t be able to hold on.

The Cowboys will close out the regular season 7-0 at home.

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Oklahoma State offense that was expected to be among the nation’s most dangerous stalled out of the gate. Starting QB Spencer Sanders was knocked out early against Tulsa with an ankle injury, and it took a 13-point fourth quarter to get by 16-7.

Meanwhile, West Virginia rolled up 42 first half points in a blowout scrimmage over Eastern Kentucky with all the parts working just fine.

It was EKU, but it was still a good showing by a Mountaineer offense that needed to show that it could actually do something like it did two weeks ago. Defensively, West Virginia has the defensive front to keep OSU RB Chuba Hubbard from going off, and again, the quarterback situation is a question mark.

Week 4 Expert Picks: College Football

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Oklahoma State is better than that.

It was a rocky opening in a weird year, and it took a whole lot of work to get by an okay Tulsa team, but the Cowboys played poorly and still got the win.

Chalk it up to an opening day funk.

West Virginia’s offense has the experience and talent to be far better, but it’s still going to have to prove it can produce against a good defense. Lost in the rough performance against the Golden Hurricane was a strong day from the Oklahoma State D that held down a dangerous attack.

On the positive side, PK Alex Hale hit all three of his field goals, promising young QB prospect Shane Illingworth was great after being thrown into the fire, and the talent is still there to explode.

But …

Week 3 Expert Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Hubbard was held to 106 yards and no touchdowns – the only time all regular season he didn’t score – in a 20-13 Oklahoma State win, and this year’s West Virginia team is a whole lot better.

West Virginia will press and make things even tougher for Oklahoma State than Tulsa did, but the Cowboy offense will be a whole lot sharper and crisper. It’ll have to win in the fourth quarter again, but it’ll get it done in a fun battle.

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

On a nice run of three wins in the last four games – with the only loss to Baylor – the Cowboys are finding their groove after losing eight in nine.

How are they doing it? They’re crushing teams on the boards. This was an okay team on the glass earlier in the year, but they’ve been hitting it hard over the last two weeks.

With a good inside presence and solid D from three, they have the right mix to stop a West Virginia team that doesn’t do a whole lot from the outside and live on rebounding margin.

Why West Virginia Will Win

Don’t get too hung up on the three-game losing streak. The Mountaineers lost to – arguably – the two best teams in the country in Baylor and Kansas, and that’s coming off a loss at Oklahoma.

Yeah, Oklahoma State is doing a great job on the boards lately, but West Virginia rebounds at a whole other level – it leads the Big 12.

OSU doesn’t move the ball well enough to overcome the WVU D that forces a whole lot of turnovers. Points in transition will be a big deal, and the home team will get more of them.

What’s Going To Happen

At home, West Virginia will get past its rough run with a strong performance on the defensive side to turn things back around. The forced mistakes will take their toll as the game goes on.
