Texas A&M vs South Carolina Game Preview

Why South Carolina Will Win

The Gamecocks have a whole slew of issues as they scratch and claw their way through the season, but the defense has been able to hold its own.

That was supposed to be one of the relative strengths. The defensive front is doing its part, even if it’s not quite getting to the quarterback enough – at least when it’s not playing Tennessee. Now it gets a Texas A&M offense that’s found a groove over the last two weeks, but it’s not rocking with the passing game.

The Aggies came up with their best game of the year through the air against Alabama, but it’s been struggling with its accurate, it hasn’t hit 160 yards in three of its last four games, and the big plays down the field haven’t been there – Bama game aside – after a decent start.

However, there’s a reason A&M didn’t bomb away last week …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas A&M Will Win

The running game rocked Missouri.

You and everyone at the McDonald’s drive-through line could run for 200 yards against Mizzou, but A&M is averaging over five yards per carry in three of the last four games – the Bama game being the outlier.

South Carolina’s run D hasn’t been bad, but give it a shot – run the ball 40 times – and the 200+ yard day will be there.

A&M has the right style to squeeze the life out of this game if it gets up quickly. South Carolina has to keep this low scoring and close, but it’s not built to keep up. With top QB Luke Doty out for the year with a foot injury, can Zeb Noland really get the job done?

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Noland is going to be under a whole lot of pressure against an A&M defensive front that should live in the backfield.

The Gamecocks will get enough defense to keep this from getting out of hand, but the Aggies will like the grind until the big home run on the ground tears this open.

Alabama vs Tennessee Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

The offense keeps on rolling.

It took a while to get going, and then … kaboom.

The Vols ran for close to 460 yards against Missouri, it was well balanced in the win over South Carolina, and the 467 yards in the wild, crazy, and problematic in the close loss to Ole Miss.

They’ve hit 200 yards rushing and passing in four of the last five games, and they’re going to need to be as versatile – and as fearless – as possible against a Tide defense that figured out the running game after getting cranked by Florida a month ago.

Combine the offensive speed and quickness with a devastating pass rush that should hurry Bryce Young, and the Vols might just have the formula to make this interesting.

Alabama allowed over 300 yards twice this year. Once was in the close call against Florida, and second was in the loss to Texas A&M. Tennessee has yet to come up with fewer than 374.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Alabama Will Win

Who’s the Tennessee quarterback?

Hendon Hooker makes this offense fly, but he’s hurt and iffy at best. Joe Milton has all the tools and upside, but he’s not all that accurate and he’s way too inconsistent.

Either way, Tennessee – despite the hurry-up style that tries to gas opposing defenses – is awful at keeping the quarterback from getting popped. Part of that is because Hooker and Milton move, but it’s also because the O line – while fantastic for the running game – simply allows a whole lot of sacks.

Alabama will have no problems getting into a shootout.

Texas A&M posed a strange problem for the Tide with it’s somewhat controlled style – which wasn’t totally on display in the win, but it was able to grind the game out a bit. That’s really, really not Tennessee.

Alabama is perfectly equipped to get into a back-and-forth fight, with Bryce Young playing at a Heisman level, Brian Robinson rising up as one of the better backs in college football, and the offense averaging close to 550 yards over the last four games.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Bama has won 14 straight going back to 2006, and the 12-10 victory in 2009 was the only close battle. At least this year’s Tennessee team seems like it has  more ammunition to bring.

Just how sharply focused is Alabama? It got everything back to normal against Mississippi State, and it was almost flawless early on against Ole Miss to put the game away with a 35-0 start.

Can Tennessee withstand the early punch? No, and it’ll cause a whole slew of problems.

The Vols will score enough to at least make the Tide keep pushing, but the interceptions and turnovers will come – Bama leads the SEC in turnover margin – just as the running game takes over full-time.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Mississippi State vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Vanderbilt just doesn’t have enough offense.

It was able to stay close in a loss to South Carolina, and it came up with a win over UConn, but it’s struggling to get past 300 yards of total O and doesn’t have enough of a running game to worry about.

That’s part of the issue – can the Commodores deal with the short-to-midrange passing game? Not really.

They’re last in the SEC in pass defense, getting hit for an average of over 300 yards per game over the last four outings. Now they get to go against a Bulldog passing attack that might not hit anything big down the field, but has hit the 300-yard mark in every outing except the 294-yard day against NC State.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

No, really. Mississippi State doesn’t do a thing with its passing game down the field. It’s dead last in the nation in average yards per completion, averaging a mere 8.65 yards per pop.

There’s absolutely no running game – the Bulldogs are also last in the nation on the ground, averaging just 47 yards per game – so the Commodores have just one job. If they can tackle after the midrange throw, they’re fine.

Vandy might not be cranking up the offense, but it’s good at controlling the clock and it’s not bad at getting the defense off the field.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Bulldog QB Will Rogers is hurting with a shoulder injury, but he was able to get through the Alabama game. The Mississippi State passing game will go off no matter who’s under center – to a point.

It’ll hit 300 yards, but it’ll be the Bulldog defense that takes over by stuffing the Vanderbilt running game to around 100 yards, but turnovers will matter.

The Commodores have come up with eight takeaways in the last three games, and it’ll get two here to keep the game from getting out of hand. It won’t be enough to make up for the struggling O.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

LSU vs Ole Miss Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

Anything interesting happening with the LSU football program?

There are two ways this can all go.

The first is that it’s all over, the Ed Orgeron era is done in a few games or maybe a few months, and 2022 will be a reboot with new coaches, new parts, and a new direction. The NFL talents on the Tigers might be checking out – at least the ones that aren’t already hurt.

But it sure didn’t look that way last week against Florida.

The other way this can go is full steam ahead – the pressure is off. It’s not going to be a national championship season, but there aren’t any expectations going forward, and on the flip side, the SEC Championship is still there for the taking by winning out and expecting a few tumbles from Auburn.

It’ll be somewhere between both things, but start with the basics – LSU showed last week that the offense still works, the ground game is great, and now it all gets to go against an Ole Miss defense that allowed over 1,500 yards in the last three games.

Throw in a banged up Matt Corral on the Rebel offensive side, and there’s a shot at pulling off something big.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Ole Miss Will Win

It’s not like the LSU defense did a whole heck of a lot to stop the Florida offense.

Check that; there were four massive takeaways to offset the season-high 488 yards allowed. Corral has only thrown one pick so far.

But Corral got beaten up last week against Tennessee – 30 carries for the franchise guy who can’t get hurt might have had something to do with that – but the offense should be able to produce no matter what.

The Rebels have the backs in Snoop Conner, Jerrion Ealy, and Henry Parrish Jr. to rotate for a ground game that should have more success than Florida did.

Kentucky ran for 330 on the Tiger D and UCLA ripped off 210. The Tiger defensive front is good enough to lock down, but the Rebels work quickly enough to keep everyone moving.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Ole Miss is playing with fire.

It got out alive on the final play against Arkansas, and there but for a wee bit more accuracy by Joe Milton – and maybe not running out of bounds at the very end – Lane Kiffin and the Rebels would’ve had to deal with fans on the field instead of just thrown golf balls and mustard bottles.

Both defenses will struggle, both teams will run the ball, and both teams will go back-and-forth in a high-octane shootout that goes down to the last drive.

Ole Miss will win a third straight game by holding on for dear life.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Arkansas vs Arkansas-Pine Bluff Game Preview

Why Arkansas-Pine Bluff Will Win

The Golden Lions can get behind the line just enough to be annoying.

The run defense is just okay, but the pass rush is solid and the team is among the best in the FCS at generating tackles for loss.

It brings the heat from all sides – eight different players have three or more plays behind the line – and should generate a few nice stops against a Hog O line that’s been hit-or-miss at keeping the backfield clean.

On the flip side, Arkansas isn’t generating enough of a pass rush to matter with no sacks in the last three games, but …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

Why Arkansas Will Win

The Golden Lions don’t do enough offensively.

The passing game isn’t efficient, the running attack stalls a bit too much, and controlling the ball and the clock isn’t working.

Arkansas might be coming off three straight losses, but the offense is still running well – it cranked out close to 600 yards over the last two games and close to 1,200 yards overall – and it should take just a few drives to get this done.

CFN Week 7 NFL Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

The Hogs need a rest.

They went from 4-0 as one of the hottest teams of 2021, to 4-3 and in need of something positive fast with Mississippi State, at LSU, and at Alabama up next.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff will score a little bit against the Hog backups, but this is more about getting everything back in sync for the finishing kick.

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 9

College Football News bowl projections and the predictions for the College Football Playoff after Week 9

The College Football News bowl projections, and the predictions for the College Football Playoff after Week 8.

We have the bowl schedule now. A few notes this week …

1. The Bahamas, Celebration, Fenway, Hawaii, Holiday, Quick Lane, and Redbox bowls won’t be played this year, and the Montgomery Bowl will take the place of the Fenway.

2. The Las Vegas Bowl is questionable. It might go, but if it doesn’t, that’s a killer for the Pac-12. If you’re looking for your Pac-12 team, the league lost the Redbox, Holiday, and now probably the Vegas.

5. New York Jets at Kansas City

LINE: Kansas City -19.5
ATS PICK: Kansas City
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

If you’ve read the college side of this over the years, you’d know there’s a certain theoretical threshold that you just don’t cross.

If someone wants to give you 40 or more points walking into the stadium, you take them. If someone wants to set a point total in the mid-70s, you take the under, and be happy the game was a fun shootout if you’re wrong. Do both of those things every time there’s an opportunity, and you’ll be up over the long haul.

Don’t take an NFL team giving away 20 points.

Ever.

Kansas City opened as a 21-point favorite at home against the Jets, and that was totally ridiculous. This is still an NFL team full of NFL players coming into Arrowhead Stadium, and no one things it’s going to win. But keeping it within three touchdowns? That’s what any NFL team is supposed to do, and …

Take Kansas City. The line dipped down to 19.5, so let’s just throw the principles out the window.

The Jets haven’t scored more than ten points in any of the last three games and haven’t scored more than 17 in any game but the 37-28 loss to Denver. Worse yet, the Jets have lost four of its last six games by 20 points or more.

No, you never take an NFL team giving away 19.5 points no matter what …

Take Kansas City.

Philadelphia Eagles (2-4-1) vs Dallas Cowboys (2-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Philadelphia Will Win

Dallas losing Dak Prescott was more than just losing its star quarterback and leader. That seemed to take away everything for a team that – to put this nicely – doesn’t seem all that focused on playing professional football.

There’s no running game whatsoever, the passing game has gone bye-bye, and the scoring defense is still the worst in the NFL.

Get up early, take away any gameplan of pounding away with Zeke Elliott, and rely on the multiple turnovers that are almost sure to come. As long as the Eagles can limit the mistakes, they’ll be fine.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Dallas Will Win

Philadelphia is having major problems against the run.

Don’t get cute, Dallas.

Run Zeke. Then run him again. And then keep running the ball and keep on doing it against a defense that’s allowed well over 100 yards in each of the last four games.

The Cowboys have to keep things simple and easy for Ben DiNucci. Obviously the Eagles are going to load up against the run, but run it anyway.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

WR Travis Fulgham, Philadelphia
With a bevy of receiving options hurt for Philly – DeSean Jackson, Zach Ertz, Alshon Jeffery, Miles Sanders – Fulgham has averaged a hefty 11 targets over the past three games. Anything less than 75 yards and a TD will be a disappointment against the leaky secondary.

What’s Going To Happen

Until Dallas shows something different, and until it can show any sign of life, keep thinking it’s a lost season that’s not about to get any better.

This is when you’d normally rely on your defense that can step it up and the running game that can take over, but neither of those things will happen. Philadelphia can’t make anything easy, but it’ll get up just enough early on to not have too much drama.
