A look at snap counts and top grades from LSU-Ole Miss.

Not a whole lot to write home about following the LSU Tigers 31-17 loss to the Ole Miss Rebels. The 14-point margin doesn’t represent how one-sided the game actually was.

The Tigers snapped a five-game winning streak against Ole Miss and gave Ed Orgeron his first loss against the Rebels as the head coach. A look at the top grades according to Pro Football Focus and the snap count distribution from the game.

Five takeaways from LSU vs Ole Miss

LSU fought for about a quarter before falling apart offensively.

The Tigers didn’t have enough in the tank on Saturday.

LSU lost to Ole Miss 31-17, with Rebels quarterback Matt Corral playing the entire game even though it was speculated that he wouldn’t be healthy enough to play this weekend.

Garrett Nussmeier came into the game and went 7 for 12 for 103 yards and a touchdown. Could there potentially be some controversy brewing at the quarterback position, with Max Johnson having played inefficiently for two games now?

We will have to wait and see. I doubt with Orgeron heading out, he isn’t too desperate to win and make changes that could help that cause.

Here are five takeaways from LSU’s 31-17 loss to Ole Miss.

What went wrong for LSU against Ole Miss

We look at what went wrong for LSU against Ole Miss.

The LSU Tigers had a real opportunity to ruin the Ole Miss Rebels shot at a New Years Six bowl.

Unfortunately, after the first quarter, it was all Rebels on this Saturday at the Grove. The Tigers were down 17-7 at halftime and then 31-10 late in the fourth quarter. Garrett Nussmeier came into the game and led the team to two scoring drives after Johnson was pulled from the game.

Now LSU will take their off week and prepare for a matchup with the No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide on Nov. 6 in Tuscaloosa. It will be the final matchup between Ed Orgeron and Nick Saban as the LSU and Alabama head coaches. The Tigers won the last game against the Tide in Tuscaloosa.

Before we get to the game in two weeks, we review what went wrong in Oxford, Mississippi.

Halftime stats from LSU vs Ole Miss

Here are the first half stats between LSU and Ole Miss.

Well, the Tigers have managed to hold on.

It seems like LSU has taken a turn for the better now that Orgeron has been officially let go. I was interested to see how the team would respond knowing these are the last few games of the Orgeron era. It seems as though they have responded positively to the negative news.

LSU is only down 17-7 to the No. 12 Ole Miss Rebels at the half. Here are the halftime stats.

Players to watch: LSU vs Ole Miss

Which player do you think can make the most impact for LSU this Saturday?

LSU and Ole Miss face off this Saturday in what could prove to be a pivotal game in the SEC West standings.

The 12th ranked Rebels currently sit at 5-1, 2-1 in the SEC. If they were to lose this game, they would need to win out. If the Rebels win tomorrow, then they can afford to lose to Auburn and still make it to the SEC Championship if Auburn were to lose any game that followed.

LSU could seriously throw a wrench into Ole Miss’ plans. Especially with the unknown QB situation for the Rebels.

Here are six players to watch during LSU’s matchup with Ole Miss this weekend.

LSU vs Ole Miss: How to watch, listen, and stream the Tigers-Rebels game

Can LSU ruin Eli Manning Day in Oxford? How to watch the Tigers and Rebels on Saturday.

The LSU Tigers and Ole Miss Rebels will meet on the field for the mid-afternoon game on Saturday.

The Tigers come in off the win over Florida and are 2-2 in SEC play, 4-3 overall. On the other side, we have the Rebels with the 2-1 conference record, their only loss coming to Alabama. They were able to survive a crazy situation against Tennessee. They hope to keep their New Years Six bowl dreams alive against Ed Orgeron and company.

All the storylines for the last week have surrounded Orgeron leaving after the season and the possibility of Lane Kiffin replacing his old friend, colleague, and former employee. LSU needs two more wins on the season to become bowl eligible, while the Rebels become eligible with a win on Saturday.

Can LSU spoil Eli Manning Day in Oxford, where his nephew and No. 1 prospect for 2023 Arch Manning will be in town? If last year was any indication as to how this game will go, better bring your popcorn.

LSU vs Ole Miss: Staff predictions and expert picks

Staff predictions and expert picks for LSU-Ole Miss

There is a chance that Matt Corral doesn’t play in this game, there is a chance that Lane Kiffin isn’t being honest about the health of his quarterback. It is tough to tell what will actually transpire.

That has been how this season has gone for LSU. Just when you think you have a grasp on this team, they surprise you. No one really gave them an opportunity to win last week, yet they did.

As we march towards Saturday’s showdown with the Ole Miss Rebels, we weigh in with our staff predictions. Plus who are the experts taking in this SEC showdown in Oxford, Mississippi?

LSU vs Ole Miss: Quarterback Tale of the Tape

Max Johnson vs Matt Corral: Round 2.

It is the rematch of the offensive explosion in the season finale one year ago. The LSU Tigers survived the onslaught from Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels, 53-48. Based on the over/under expected in this game, we could be in for another wild shootout.

In recent weeks we had LSU survive a shootout with Florida 49-42, and Ole Miss needed a stop on a two-point conversion to beat Arkansas 52-51. Both teams can light up the scoreboard. The offensive explosion is less so for the Tigers who lost Kayshon Boutte, or so you would think. Last week they didn’t need him as the offense generated 42 points.

Looking at the passers, we examine the quarterback tale of the tape.

How do Johnson and Corral compare?

Max Johnson Category Matt Corral
6-5 Ht 6-2

Sophomore Class Junior
149.6 Passing Efficiency 169.2
149 Comp 122

61.3 Comp% 66.3
1,862 Yards 1,728
7.7 Yards/Attempt 9.4
20-4 TD-INT Ratio 14-1

Tigers quarterback Max Johnson might have better numbers from yards and touchdowns, Rebels quarterback Matt Corral has been more efficient. On Monday Lane Kiffin stated that it didn’t look good from a health perspective but Ed Orgeron wasn’t buying it, called it a “smokescreen.”

If the Ole Miss offense isn’t led by Corral, that could be a major issue for their offense. The Rebels offense goes as Corral goes. He is the leading passer and rusher for the team. The edge at quarterback does belong to the junior quarterback but if Ole Miss has to go with a backup, expect Max Johnson and the offense to shine brightest.

If Corral does indeed play, if LSU can force another awful game like last year you have to like their chances. They intercepted Corral five times in that game.

Quarterback Comp Att Comp % Yards YPA TDs INTs
Corral 15 27 55.5 251 9.3 3 5
Johnson 27 51 52.9 435 8.5 3 1

LSU vs Ole Miss Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

Anything interesting happening with the LSU football program?

There are two ways this can all go.

The first is that it’s all over, the Ed Orgeron era is done in a few games or maybe a few months, and 2022 will be a reboot with new coaches, new parts, and a new direction. The NFL talents on the Tigers might be checking out – at least the ones that aren’t already hurt.

But it sure didn’t look that way last week against Florida.

The other way this can go is full steam ahead – the pressure is off. It’s not going to be a national championship season, but there aren’t any expectations going forward, and on the flip side, the SEC Championship is still there for the taking by winning out and expecting a few tumbles from Auburn.

It’ll be somewhere between both things, but start with the basics – LSU showed last week that the offense still works, the ground game is great, and now it all gets to go against an Ole Miss defense that allowed over 1,500 yards in the last three games.

Throw in a banged up Matt Corral on the Rebel offensive side, and there’s a shot at pulling off something big.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Ole Miss Will Win

It’s not like the LSU defense did a whole heck of a lot to stop the Florida offense.

Check that; there were four massive takeaways to offset the season-high 488 yards allowed. Corral has only thrown one pick so far.

But Corral got beaten up last week against Tennessee – 30 carries for the franchise guy who can’t get hurt might have had something to do with that – but the offense should be able to produce no matter what.

The Rebels have the backs in Snoop Conner, Jerrion Ealy, and Henry Parrish Jr. to rotate for a ground game that should have more success than Florida did.

Kentucky ran for 330 on the Tiger D and UCLA ripped off 210. The Tiger defensive front is good enough to lock down, but the Rebels work quickly enough to keep everyone moving.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Ole Miss is playing with fire.

It got out alive on the final play against Arkansas, and there but for a wee bit more accuracy by Joe Milton – and maybe not running out of bounds at the very end – Lane Kiffin and the Rebels would’ve had to deal with fans on the field instead of just thrown golf balls and mustard bottles.

Both defenses will struggle, both teams will run the ball, and both teams will go back-and-forth in a high-octane shootout that goes down to the last drive.

Ole Miss will win a third straight game by holding on for dear life.

LSU vs Ole Miss: Lane Kiffin provided an update on the health of Matt Corral

Lane Kiffin wasn’t confident in the health of his QB on Monday.

On Saturday the LSU Tigers have a huge SEC West matchup with the Ole Miss Rebels. The game features two coaches that know each other very well from their time at USC together.

On Monday Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin addressed the health of his quarterback.

“He’s not in very good shape,” Kiffin said Monday. “He hasn’t been for the last two days. You guys know how we are on injuries. Hopefully he will play but I don’t feel good about that right now.” –per Clarion Ledger

When asked about preparing for Corral, Ed Orgeron stated that they expect Matt [Corral] to play.  “Knowing Matt and knowing coach Kiffin, he’s kind of throwing me a smokescreen.”

Corral was pretty banged up in the game against Tennessee but he was able to finish the game. It could be an instance of trying to rest the Rebels quarterback in preparation for the upcoming game. It will be interesting to see if Corral is able to go in the game on Saturday.

Kiffin’s quarterback has been in the Heisman Trophy discussion during the early going of the 2021 season. In six games Corral has thrown for 1,728 yards while completing 66.3% of his passes with 14 touchdowns. A season ago, he compiled 3,337 yards and 29 touchdowns.

If he isn’t able to play against LSU, that would be a major blow to the offense. Last year, both teams combined for 101 points and 1,151 yards of offense. LSU won 53-48 in the season finale.
