BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN: Alabama basketball stat leaders from 81-74 loss to Tennessee

No. 14 Alabama suffered its ninth loss of the season to No. 4 Tennessee on Saturday night. Roll Tide Wire takes a look at Alabama’s stat leaders in the loss.

The Alabama men’s basketball team suffered a gut-wrenching loss to No. 4 Tennessee on Saturday night. The Crimson Tide had spurts of success and droughts on both ends of the floor. At the end of the day, Alabama did not do enough to come away with a victory inside Coleman Coliseum.

Nate Oats’ squad had its share of ups and downs. This game had a lot on the line in terms of regular season championship implications. However, there is at least four games left this season for the Crimson Tide.

Several Alabama players stepped up in big ways while others struggled at times.

Roll Tide Wire takes a look at Alabama’s stat leaders from its 81-74 loss to Tennessee.

Alabama vs. Tennessee: Predictions and analysis

Check out analysis and predictions for the Tennessee vs. Alabama men’s basketball showdown in Tuscaloosa.

With SEC regular season championship implications on the line, what Alabama team will show up? Will it be the Alabama team that knocked off ranked opponents in Florida and Auburn or the Alabama team that gave up 117 points on the road against Kentucky?

The Crimson Tide is tasked with taking on a scorching-hot Tennessee squad. The Volunteers are ranked as the No. 4 team in the country. Rick Barnes’ squad is led by senior and SEC Player of the Year candidate Dalton Knecht. Knecht is averaging 20.8 points per game and shooting 48.2% from the floor. That is remarkable to say the least.

He is the heart and soul of the Tennessee basketball program. That is not to say that the Volunteers do not have a good supporting cast, because they do. Jonas Aidoo, Zakai Zeigler, and Santiago Vescovi are each experienced players in the SEC and are known to have good games as well.

When Alabama and Tennessee faced off earlier in the season, the Volunteers defeated the Crimson Tide by 20 points. Will that be the case again on Saturday?

It seems unlikely given the fact that Alabama has the luxury of playing in front of a sold-out crowd inside Coleman Coliseum. Alabama seemingly plays better when sporting the home whites. Nate Oats’ squad has scored over 100 points in nine games this season.

The chances of Alabama scoring 100 points on a stingy, Tennessee defense seems unlikely to happen. Can it? Of course, it can happen.

Alabama will have to be able to penetrate the paint and create shot opportunities for its shooters. Tennessee did a great job in the previous matchup of making Alabama drive and limiting the Crimson Tide from beyond the arc. Alabama shot 4-21 from distance.

That will not be the case on Saturday night, however. I fully expect Alabama to apply the pressure early on by knocking down threes and forcing Tennessee to respond. I don’t think that the Volunteers will be able to match the Crimson Tide’s intensity level for 40 minutes.

For those reasons, my prediction is that Alabama picks up a statement win. I like Alabama to defeat Tennessee 94-88.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest regarding the Alabama men’s basketball program.

Will a Pac-12 team make the College Football Playoff?

.@ZacharyCNeel of @Ducks_Wire asked us about the #Pac12 and the College Football Playoff. Let’s start with this: Root for @VolsWire’s Tennessee team vs Alabama.

Ducks Wire editor Zachary Neel asked Trojans Wire if we thought a Pac-12 team would make the College Football Playoff.

Here’s what I have to say on the subject:

In my unbiased opinion, no, a Pac-12 team won’t make the playoff. Every Pac-12 team will lose at least once, so if we have a 2021-style situation with Georgia and Alabama having only one loss, those two teams are getting in over a 12-1 Pac-12 champion.

Alabama easily could have lost a game by now, but it didn’t. Alabama could still lose to Tennessee this week, but as long as the Tide lose only once in the second half of the season, they should still be fine. Same with Georgia. UGA didn’t get in in 2018 because it lost twice.

A one-loss SEC runner-up almost certainly gets in. Clemson was a team we didn’t know about heading into the season.

The Tigers have passed their big tests and look set to make the playoff again. That’s a killer for the Pac-12, which was hoping Clemson would lose.

The Tigers were taken to overtime by Wake Forest, but the Demon Deacons couldn’t close the sale. It’s very unfortunate.

Alabama vs Tennessee Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

The offense keeps on rolling.

It took a while to get going, and then … kaboom.

The Vols ran for close to 460 yards against Missouri, it was well balanced in the win over South Carolina, and the 467 yards in the wild, crazy, and problematic in the close loss to Ole Miss.

They’ve hit 200 yards rushing and passing in four of the last five games, and they’re going to need to be as versatile – and as fearless – as possible against a Tide defense that figured out the running game after getting cranked by Florida a month ago.

Combine the offensive speed and quickness with a devastating pass rush that should hurry Bryce Young, and the Vols might just have the formula to make this interesting.

Alabama allowed over 300 yards twice this year. Once was in the close call against Florida, and second was in the loss to Texas A&M. Tennessee has yet to come up with fewer than 374.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Alabama Will Win

Who’s the Tennessee quarterback?

Hendon Hooker makes this offense fly, but he’s hurt and iffy at best. Joe Milton has all the tools and upside, but he’s not all that accurate and he’s way too inconsistent.

Either way, Tennessee – despite the hurry-up style that tries to gas opposing defenses – is awful at keeping the quarterback from getting popped. Part of that is because Hooker and Milton move, but it’s also because the O line – while fantastic for the running game – simply allows a whole lot of sacks.

Alabama will have no problems getting into a shootout.

Texas A&M posed a strange problem for the Tide with it’s somewhat controlled style – which wasn’t totally on display in the win, but it was able to grind the game out a bit. That’s really, really not Tennessee.

Alabama is perfectly equipped to get into a back-and-forth fight, with Bryce Young playing at a Heisman level, Brian Robinson rising up as one of the better backs in college football, and the offense averaging close to 550 yards over the last four games.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Bama has won 14 straight going back to 2006, and the 12-10 victory in 2009 was the only close battle. At least this year’s Tennessee team seems like it has  more ammunition to bring.

Just how sharply focused is Alabama? It got everything back to normal against Mississippi State, and it was almost flawless early on against Ole Miss to put the game away with a 35-0 start.

Can Tennessee withstand the early punch? No, and it’ll cause a whole slew of problems.

The Vols will score enough to at least make the Tide keep pushing, but the interceptions and turnovers will come – Bama leads the SEC in turnover margin – just as the running game takes over full-time.

Alabama (22-6) vs Tennessee (18-7) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Tennessee Will Win

Tennessee got tough.

It beat Florida 78-66 by getting nasty on the boards and doing a great job of getting to the basket with lots and lots of good ball movement. The Vols had 21 assists and the Gators had just seven – that has to continue against the Bama D.

The Crimson Tide are great at forcing steals and mistakes, but if Tennessee can keep the turnovers to under 15, the other parts should work. In the first and only meeting – a 71-63 Tide win in early January – Tennessee only turned it over nine times, so it’s possible. If it can just shoot a little better than 32% – that was an anomaly – it can hang around.

Why Alabama Will Win

That’s what’s called a statement performance.

Alabama ripped off a 47-19 first half run against Mississippi State on the way to a 85-48 victory, forcing a ton of Bulldog mistakes, hitting 49% from the field, and keeping the pressure on with great ball movement all game long.

Tennessee might have the ability and upside to keep up if this gets into a high-scoring fight, but its way too flaky – it’s just as likely to hit just 35% from the field as it is to make half of its shots.

To harp on this, it’s going to come down to mistakes. Bama has come up with double-digit steals in each of its last four games, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Tennessee leads the SEC in fewest turnovers.

Bama took its game to a whole other level against Mississippi State, but it’s generally not that strong a shooting team and it’s more prone to turnovers than the Vols are.

Can Tennessee ramp up the intensity like it did against the Gators? It’s got the ability to match Bama on the boards and play just enough defense to pull it off. It’ll shoot better than it did back in January.

Halftime Report: Alabama vs. Tennessee

Alabama has looked great through the first half as they lead Tennessee 28 to 10 heading to halftime.

Star wide receiver Jalen Waddle suffered what looks to be a pretty serious ankle injury on the opening kickoff and that’s all Alabama fans can think about right now. It was hard to see Waddle being loaded into an ambulance, and losing him will be a hard pill to swallow.

Unfortunately, it looks like Waddle will miss the remainder of the season, according to Alabama head coach Nick Saban,

After Waddle went down, the Crimson Tide showed its depth at the receiver position by plugging in sophomore Slade Bolden, who came in and contributed immediately. He and John Metchie lead Alabama in receiving yards heading at halftime.

Metchie has three receptions for 88 yards and Bolden has four receptions for 81 yards. Metchie made an outstanding catch in the second quarter that led to a touchdown.

Mac Jones has looked terrific thus far. He’s completed 13 of 15 passes for 254 yards. Jones also snuck in a touchdown at the one-yard line for Alabama’s second touchdown of the day. The first touchdown of the day came from Najee Harris who has had an outstanding game himself. He’s rushed for 49 yards on 11 carries and a pair of touchdowns.

Alabama’s defense looked great to start the game but showed weakness in the second quarter allowing the Vols to sustain two long drives that resulted in a field goal and a touchdown. The Vols touchdown came on a touchdown pass from Jarrett Guarantano to freshman receiver Jalin Hyatt. That’s was Hyatt’s first catch of the game and the first touchdown of his career.

Alabama leads Tennessee 28-10 heading into halftime and the Tide have truly dominated this game from the start. Jones has picked apart this Tennessee defense all first half and I don’t see that changing in the second half. The defense will need to review a few things at halftime as Guarantano has made a couple of big plays throughout the first half.

Roll Tide Wire will keep you updated on all things Alabama Football as the second half of Alabama vs. Tennessee is set to kickoff soon.

BREAKING: Jalen Waddle leaves Tennessee game with ankle injury

Star receiver Jalen Waddle suffered an ankle injury on the opening kickoff against the Tennessee Volunteers and is questionable to return.

Alabama’s Star wide receiver Jalen Waddle suffered an ankle injury in the opening kickoff and is questionable to return. The junior’s ankle was caught underneath a Tennessee defender and he was seen immediately limping off the field.

Waddle was then seen being helped to the locker room by Alabama trainers.

If Waddle isn’t able to return, sophomore Slade Bolden will see addition reps at both wide receiver and as a return man. Bolden caught a 12-yard pass from Mac Jones on Alabama’s opening drive and has shown flashes when given the opportunity.

Fellow wide receiver DeVonta Smith is in line for another big day if Waddle is unable to return. Smith caught 11 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns against Georgia, and he could be in line for the same type of game against Tennessee.

Sophomore John Metchie III should be in line for more targets as well.

Let’s hope the injury to Waddle isn’t too serious and he is able to return later in the game.

Alabama’s secondary looking to build upon success against Tennessee

Alabama’s secondary looks to build upon continued success against a struggling Tennessee offense.

It was a rough start to the season for the Alabama secondary, but last week’s second half against Georgia showed there’s a reason for optimism. The Crimson Tide was able to keep the Bulldogs scoreless through the final two quarters and the secondary had a lot to do with that.

Malachi Moore and Daniel Wright were both able to pick off Stetson Bennett in plays that proved to be real game-changers for the Tide.

Alabama can make a real statement to the rest of the country with a strong showing from its secondary against Tennessee. That shouldn’t be much of a problem as the Vols offense has looked terrible as of late. Last week against Kentucky they were only able to put up 7 points in a blowout loss to the Wildcats.

Tennessee’s starting quarterback Jarrett Guarantano has really struggled to start the 2020 season. After two pick-sixes against Kentucky, he looks to be in real trouble of losing the starting job. The Volunteers have a bye next week and could use that week to get freshman Harrison Bailey ready to take over if Guarantano has another bad showing against Alabama.

Getting Guarantano rattled early should be a point of emphasis for the Alabama defense. If they can capitalize on that it should be easy pickings for cornerbacks Josh Jobe, Patrick Surtain, and Malachi Moore all game. Safties Daniel Wright and Jordan Battle should be able to make big plays as well, as Guarantano is known for putting a little too much on his deep passes.

It’s setting up perfectly for Alabama’s secondary to have a big game against Tennessee, and it couldn’t come at a better time. It’s taken some time, but this secondary is ready to turn the page and make this unit a strength instead of a weakness for the 2020 season.
