Mississippi State vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Vanderbilt just doesn’t have enough offense.

It was able to stay close in a loss to South Carolina, and it came up with a win over UConn, but it’s struggling to get past 300 yards of total O and doesn’t have enough of a running game to worry about.

That’s part of the issue – can the Commodores deal with the short-to-midrange passing game? Not really.

They’re last in the SEC in pass defense, getting hit for an average of over 300 yards per game over the last four outings. Now they get to go against a Bulldog passing attack that might not hit anything big down the field, but has hit the 300-yard mark in every outing except the 294-yard day against NC State.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

No, really. Mississippi State doesn’t do a thing with its passing game down the field. It’s dead last in the nation in average yards per completion, averaging a mere 8.65 yards per pop.

There’s absolutely no running game – the Bulldogs are also last in the nation on the ground, averaging just 47 yards per game – so the Commodores have just one job. If they can tackle after the midrange throw, they’re fine.

Vandy might not be cranking up the offense, but it’s good at controlling the clock and it’s not bad at getting the defense off the field.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Bulldog QB Will Rogers is hurting with a shoulder injury, but he was able to get through the Alabama game. The Mississippi State passing game will go off no matter who’s under center – to a point.

It’ll hit 300 yards, but it’ll be the Bulldog defense that takes over by stuffing the Vanderbilt running game to around 100 yards, but turnovers will matter.

The Commodores have come up with eight takeaways in the last three games, and it’ll get two here to keep the game from getting out of hand. It won’t be enough to make up for the struggling O.

Mississippi State (1-4) vs Vanderbilt (0-4) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Vanderbilt doesn’t score.

The Commodores are last in the SEC in total offense, partly because the line has major problems keeping defenses out of the backfield. There’s no real running game, the third downs aren’t happening, and the O is dead last in the SEC in first downs.

They put up 21 last week against Ole Miss and still lose by 33. In the previous three games, they scored 26 points total, and now they have to deal with a Mississippi State defense that might have had problems with Alabama last week, but has been solid overall.

Vandy will look like its running in sand compared to the Crimson Tide.

However …

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Mississippi State doesn’t score.

It’s early, it will be better in time, and eventually all of the right pieces will be in place, but this Mike Leach thing really, really, really isn’t working.

Everyone remembers the O exploding on LSU, but it only scored 30 points over the last four games, failing to score a touchdown in two of the last three games. There’s no downfield passing game, the running game is non-existent – especially with Kylin Hill going pro – and this is a game for a Vandy D to catch a little bit of a break.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

Vanderbilt doesn’t pick off passes, coming up with just one interception on the year. As rough as the season has been for the Commodores, they’re finally going to be in good battle they can win, but the Mississippi State mid-range passing attack will be just effective enough to get by.

The first one to score might just win this.

Mississippi State (0-1) vs Arkansas (1-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Mississippi State Will Win

623 yards, five touchdowns.

No, the Mississippi State 44-34 win over LSU wasn’t perfect, but in the first game in the Mike Leach era, and with a new quarterback trying to run an offense based on timing and precision, beating the defending national champ with a record-setting performance was good enough.

Arkansas has veterans on defense that know what they’re doing, but they don’t have the star defensive backs needed to slow down the machine. The D will generate a little bit of a pass rush to get to KJ Costello, but not enough of one to matter.

The Hogs can’t hang punch-for-punch with the Tigers, and they’re not built to grind out long drives – star RB Rakeem Boyd only ran for 21 yards in the 37-10 loss to Georgia.

However …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Arkansas Will Win

Feleipe Franks is a veteran SEC quarterback who isn’t going to be fazed by a Mississippi State defense that gave up 345 passing yards and three scores to Myles Brennan.

Arkansas has offensive weapons to potentially keep up. It’s not that LSU didn’t move the ball last week; it’s that MSU did it a whole lot better when it had to.

Georgia struggled to run the ball on the Arkansas defensive front, and things might have been a whole lot closer had there not been three key turnovers.

Win the time of possession battle, stop with the penalties and giveaways, bother Costello enough to make him have to keep going to his first read.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Arkansas will engage in the shootout.

It’ll take about a quarter for the Mississippi State machine to warm up, and the Hogs might be up early on, and then comes the run. Just when it seems like something big might happen, and just when Twitter starts to go Twitter …

21 straight points, ball game.
