LSU vs Ole Miss Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

Anything interesting happening with the LSU football program?

There are two ways this can all go.

The first is that it’s all over, the Ed Orgeron era is done in a few games or maybe a few months, and 2022 will be a reboot with new coaches, new parts, and a new direction. The NFL talents on the Tigers might be checking out – at least the ones that aren’t already hurt.

But it sure didn’t look that way last week against Florida.

The other way this can go is full steam ahead – the pressure is off. It’s not going to be a national championship season, but there aren’t any expectations going forward, and on the flip side, the SEC Championship is still there for the taking by winning out and expecting a few tumbles from Auburn.

It’ll be somewhere between both things, but start with the basics – LSU showed last week that the offense still works, the ground game is great, and now it all gets to go against an Ole Miss defense that allowed over 1,500 yards in the last three games.

Throw in a banged up Matt Corral on the Rebel offensive side, and there’s a shot at pulling off something big.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Ole Miss Will Win

It’s not like the LSU defense did a whole heck of a lot to stop the Florida offense.

Check that; there were four massive takeaways to offset the season-high 488 yards allowed. Corral has only thrown one pick so far.

But Corral got beaten up last week against Tennessee – 30 carries for the franchise guy who can’t get hurt might have had something to do with that – but the offense should be able to produce no matter what.

The Rebels have the backs in Snoop Conner, Jerrion Ealy, and Henry Parrish Jr. to rotate for a ground game that should have more success than Florida did.

Kentucky ran for 330 on the Tiger D and UCLA ripped off 210. The Tiger defensive front is good enough to lock down, but the Rebels work quickly enough to keep everyone moving.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Ole Miss is playing with fire.

It got out alive on the final play against Arkansas, and there but for a wee bit more accuracy by Joe Milton – and maybe not running out of bounds at the very end – Lane Kiffin and the Rebels would’ve had to deal with fans on the field instead of just thrown golf balls and mustard bottles.

Both defenses will struggle, both teams will run the ball, and both teams will go back-and-forth in a high-octane shootout that goes down to the last drive.

Ole Miss will win a third straight game by holding on for dear life.

Why Ole Miss Will Win

It’s not like the LSU defense is working.

It has a pass rush, and it’s been great on third downs, but it’s been roasted way too easily. Giving up 650 yards to Alabama and 609 to Florida in back-to-back weeks is one thing, but the Tigers have allowed over 400 to everyone other than Vanderbilt and Texas A&M – that was a strange performance by the Aggies.

Ole Miss has everything working with the passing game. It’s been a while since it’s been able to play, but the O cranked out close to 1,900 yards over its last three games, the big plays are coming in bunches, and now there won’t be any rest for the the Tiger secondary.

Third in the nation in total offense, averaging close to 15 yards per pass, and with ability to strike quickly, the Rebels are going to keep pressing for a full four quarters. But …

Why LSU Will Win

There’s the LSU offense.

The Tigers just won the Gator Bowl with one of the biggest stunners of the season, taking out Florida 37-34. There’s no real bowl game this year for LSU, and this is it. The team showed great fight, it got through adversity of a rough game, and it might have found a quarterback.

TJ Finley has the skills and tools to get every shot at the gig going forward, and Myles Brennan is the almost-certain starter once he’s back and healthy next year, but Max Johnson looked great when he got his chances over the last three games. He had some down moments against Florida, but he threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns with no picks.

Ole Miss is miserable defensively on third downs, there’s no run defense, and the team is dead last in the nation in total defense, allowing 529 yards per game. The LSU offense should have some fun.

What’s Going To Happen

Can LSU really do it again? It can’t, but it won’t.

Ole Miss has been on a nice three-game winning streak – albeit against Vanderbilt, South Carolina and Mississippi State – with the offense playing well enough to overcome the almost non-existent defense.

This will be a good shootout with plenty of big plays for both sides. Ole Miss does the offensive thing better, with more explosion, and more consistency.

LSU-Ole Miss odds: No. 1 Tigers overwhelming road favorites

Previewing Saturday’s LSU at Ole Miss college football matchup, with NCAA football betting odds, picks and best bets

Fresh off a win over Alabama, the No. 1-ranked LSU Tigers (9-0, 5-0 SEC) will take on the Ole Miss Rebels (4-6, 2-4) in Oxford, Miss., on Saturday night. Kickoff from Vaught-Hemingway Stadium will be at 7 p.m. ET. We analyze the LSU-Ole Miss odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

LSU at Ole Miss: Three things you need to know

1. The Tigers have beaten four teams ranked in the top 10 at the time in Texas, Florida, Auburn and Alabama. Still undefeated, they have the best resume in college football and are fourth in the country in scoring at 46.7 points per game.

2. LSU will, however, be without LT Saahdiq Charles (coach’s decision) on Saturday — the fifth time this season he will sit for that reason. RT Austin Deculus is a game-time decision with an undisclosed injury. He sounds unlikely to play.

3. Ole Miss RB Scottie Phillips is questionable to play due to an ankle injury. He’s the Rebels’ second-leading rusher this season, racking up 542 yards and 5 TDs.

Prediction

LSU 35, Ole Miss 17

Moneyline (ML)

There’s very little doubt that the Tigers are going to win this one outright. That doesn’t necessarily mean you should touch the moneyline (-1250), though. A $10 bet on the LSU moneyline will only net you $0.80 — not worth the risk, in my mind.

Stay away from the moneyline in this one because of the lopsided nature of the matchup. Yes, LSU should win — and most likely will — but there’s such little upside that it’s not worth the risk.

Against the Spread (ATS)

The Tigers enter this game as 20.5-point favorites on the road. They looked dominant in the first half against Alabama and held on for the win, and that emotional victory could have some lingering effects on this one.

They’re 4-1 ATS against Ole Miss in their last five meetings, but the Rebels are 5-1 ATS in their last six games this season, so they’ve done a good job of covering despite their 4-6 overall record. Take the points with OLE MISS (+20.5, +105).

Over/Under (O/U)

It’s hard to see the Rebels scoring enough to push this game over 64.5 points, and LSU could be without both of their offensive tackles. The total has gone under in four of Ole Miss’ last five games, including each of the last three. The under is 2-1 in the Tigers’ last three games, too.

Bet the UNDER (-110). That total of 64.5 is too high.
