Wisconsin vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Wisconsin Will Win

The defense continues to be incredible.

The entire Badger offense owes the other side a cookie for keeping the season alive, holding Illinois to 93 total yards two weeks ago and stuffing Army for 179 rushing yards last week in a way-too-tight 20-14 win.

For all of the team’s problems, it’s No. 2 in the nation in total defense behind Georgia, the team is fourth in the country in time of possession, and it’s third against the run.

Purdue doesn’t run, and even though it controls the clock, it’s not going to win the time of possession battle against this team. However …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Purdue Will Win

The Wisconsin defense has an Achilles heel. It’ll do everything right, but try three big pass plays, and two will work. That’s enough to get by considering how miserable the Badger offense is.

You don’t get to be as good as the Wisconsin D is without knowing how to take away the opposing main guy, but it’s going to have a problem with David Bell, who has four 100-yard receiving games in five outings and all but ruined the Iowa season last week with 11 catches for 240 yards and a score.

Even more than that, Purdue has a defense, too.

As Iowa found out, this is a different Purdue team. The offense is fine, but it’s the other side that takes over game – it hasn’t allowed 300 yards of total offense in the last three games.

However …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers.

Wisconsin’s offense is like clockwork in its ability to give the ball away, but Purdue’s defense – four takeaways against Iowa aside – doesn’t force turnovers.

The Badger offense can’t throw at all.

Graham Mertz has – let’s be kind here; he’s a college kid – struggled, and now he’ll have to deal with Purdue DE George Karlaftis jumping on his head for a full four quarters. But all Mertz has to do is not royally screw up.

Mertz will turn it over twice, the passing attack won’t go anywhere, and Bell and the Purdue air show will connect on two big home runs, and …

It’s all going to come down to defense and control of the clock.

Wisconsin does both of those things better.

Penn State vs Illinois Game Preview

Why Illinois Will Win

Did Bret Bielema light a fire under his Illini or did he throw his team under the bus?

He ripped the team, the former coaching staff, and the program in general for not having enough talent on the 2021 team. He’s actually sort of right, but a college head coach isn’t supposed to say the quiet part out loud.

He’s got veterans across the board, the team had two weeks off to rest up, and now the running game that destroyed Charlotte needs to at least be functional early on. No, Illinois isn’t going to rip through the Nittany Lions, but Wisconsin, Auburn, and Iowa were at least able to get a few decent gains to keep everyone honest.

The real question for Illinois is whether or not Penn State starting quarterback Sean Clifford is able to go after getting hurt against Iowa. The Nittany Lions are working with the backups to get ready for this, but …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Penn State Will Win

Yeah, the run defense.

Wisconsin was able to rip off a few nice runs, and Auburn had a couple of moments, but the Nittany Lions are allowing three yards per carry on the year, haven’t allowed more than 100 yards to anyone other than the Badgers, Tigers, and Hawkeyes, and they aren’t going to be gashed by the Illini.

The offense that couldn’t do anything right when Clifford went out against Iowa isn’t going to come out humming, but as long as the D is doing its job, Penn State’s attack will have plenty of chances and good field position.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t be stunned if Illinois all of a sudden plays out of its depth for a little while.

No, the talent isn’t there. Yes, Bielema has a rebuilding job to do. But the defense has’t been all that bad and it should be able to keep this from getting out of hand.

The offense, though, is going to to a whole lot of nothing against a rested Nittany Lion D. As long as the turnovers aren’t flowing like they did in Iowa City, there won’t be a problem.

Michigan vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Northwestern Will Win

There’s the Northwestern defense.

The offense showed up in the 21-7 win over Rutgers and wasn’t bad, but it was the pis of the defense in one of its best performances of the year that might have been the pivot needed after the disaster against Nebraska two weeks earlier.

It was the first halfway decent win of the year – and pump the brakes on this next stat considering the other two victories were against Indiana State and Ohio – but Northwestern is 3-0 when allowing fewer than 200 rushing yards, and 0-3 when allowing more.

The run D has to be great, and QB Ryan Hilinski has to keep playing well. The former South Carolina Gamecock has thrown for over 260 yards in each of the last two games and three touchdowns with no picks, but …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Michigan Will Win

Michigan ain’t Rutgers, or Indiana State, or Ohio.

The Wolverines struggled through the win at Nebraska, but it was looking and playing like a team that could’ve used a week off, and they got it.

Even though it was a fight against the Huskers, the running game still rolled for over 200 yards. Forget about running against Wisconsin – Michigan didn’t, and it still won – and the Rutgers run D is hit-or-miss good.

Against Northwestern, the formula is simple. Don’t turn the ball over and give up easy points – Michigan leads the nation in fewest turnovers with two – run well enough to control the tempo, and don’t worry about a Northwestern offense that isn’t going to hang 50 on the board if you do the first two parts correctly.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan will run well from the start at home, but it’ll take a quarter to get back up to speed. The offensive line will get it all going in the second quarter and Northwestern won’t have enough pop and consistency to turn a few decent drives into points.

West Virginia vs TCU Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

So what’s going right on this ship?

It’s been a rough three-game losing stretch with losses to Texas Tech and Baylor to go along with a 16-13 fight to a pre-Caleb Williams-starting Oklahoma. However, the defense continues to be a killer against the run.

The pass defense had its worst day of the year against Baylor, and it’s allowing 220 yards or more in every game against FBS teams, but the defensive front has been a rock with no one getting past 171 yards.

TCU likes its balance, and it needs it with a defense that gets gouged.

The Horned Frogs are going through a defense-optional season, allowing 525 yards or more in three of the last four games, and losing to Texas in the one outlier. But …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why TCU Will Win

The TCU offense has been terrific.

QB Max Duggan is gutting it out through a foot injury, but the attack is still rolling with over 430 yards in every game but the loss to Texas and a season-high 529 yards last week against Oklahoma.

The O is doing just about everything about as right as possible, dominating on third downs, owning the offensive line, and it’s not turning the ball over enough to matter.

West Virginia doesn’t have the offensive pop to keep up if the Horned Frogs can get up fast.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can the TCU defense do anything to come up with a few stops to let the offense take over?

Can the West Virginia offense do anything to go on enough good drives to let the defense win the game?

Basically – throwing out the game against Long Island – the West Virginia offense stalled in the second half of the season-opener against Maryland, and it hasn’t quite been all to get it back. The TCU offense will come up with a few early scores, and the Mountaineers won’t be able to chase them down.

Oklahoma State vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Yeah, Iowa State appears to be getting back to the team that we all thought we were getting when the season started, but let’s relax on this just a wee bit.

It’s not time to start holding parades for beating Kansas and Kansas State.

Oklahoma State is battle-hardened at the one team to beat Baylor – the Bears got by Iowa State a few weeks ago – and pulled off a terrific win over Texas helped by the continued rise of Jaylen Warren.

Everyone might be fawning over Bijan Robinson of Texas, and Breece Hall is the star back in this, but Warren is the hottest back in the Big 12 with four straight 100-yard games with a 193-yard performance against the Longhorns.

He’s been great, the defense has been fantastic, and the Cowboys have the makeup and the style to be exactly what’s needed to match what Iowa State does because …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Iowa State Will Win

The Iowa State defense showed up from the start.

The offense was the problem early on, but that rebounded fast with four straight games of well over 400 yards. That side is humming – the balance is there with 200 yards passing and rushing in the last three games – but it’s the other side that’s dominating.

It allowed over 300 yards in each of the last two games, but it’s not getting gouged, it’s the best in the conference against the run, fifth in pass defense, and overall the D is third in the nation.

Oklahoma State has to be ready to get into a slugfest, and …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma State’s defensive front is going to take over.

The Iowa State offense is playing better overall now than the Cowboy attack, but the fantastic OSU pass rush, the ability to come up with stops on third downs, and yeah, overall, the attitude of still not being respected enough will come through.

It’ll be a tight game coming down to the last few possessions. Brock Purdy will have one last shot to pull it off, but the Cowboys will get the stop.

Kansas State vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

Can the running game get going again?

It’s not all that hard with Kansas State. It has to be in control of games by running the ball, it can’t rely on the passing attacks, and it has to keep things moving to help a defense that’s bad on third downs.

Texas Tech doesn’t care about the time of possession, and that’s Step One for the Wildcats. Step Two is to make sure that ball control matters by running and running some more, and Texas Tech allowed over 300 rushing yards in two of the last four games.

Kansas State is 3-0 when running for 200 yards, and 0-3 when going under.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Back to the third down thing – Kansas State has a hard time getting its defense off the field.

The offense doesn’t control third downs as much as it has to with a defense that allows offenses to convert 45% of their chances. After doing a good job early, K-State has allowed teams to convert 47% or more of their tries in each of the last four games.

The Texas Tech offense is a tad hit-or-miss, but when it converts its third down chances – it connected on 9-of-11 in the win over Kansas and it good on 49% of its chances on the year – it wins. The team is 4-0 when getting to 40%, and 0-2 when it doesn’t.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech will hit its third down conversions.

The offense has started to run better. The passing game is still the main mode of transportation, but the offense has mixed it up a bit over the last two weeks with Henry Colombi under center with over 200 yards on the ground.

It’ll be a fun back-and-forth game with the home side being a bit more effective and stronger at doing what it does.

Oklahoma vs Kansas Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

This is what we were all waiting for.

It might be a wee bit late for the Heisman race, but it’s not crazy to think that Caleb Williams could be the most important and signature player of the 2021 season if he’s able to keep this up.

Shot out of a cannon on a fourth down run that flipped the Texas game, he took all the pressure of being the new starter and hit TCU for 295 yards and four touchdowns – connecting on 78% of his throws – with 66 yards and a score.

He’s running the offense better, RB Kennedy Brooks hit the 150+ mark on the ground for the second game in a row, and it’s all finally working.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Kansas Will Win

Oklahoma has a bizarre way of only playing for about 38 minutes. Those minutes might be spread out, or they might come early, but this team just can’t seem to maintain its focus and consistency for a full 60.

Whether it was starting slow against Texas, or letting TCU hang around last week, or almost collapsing against Kansas State and Tulane, the Sooners let down, and they’ll certainly going to it in what should be a breather of a week.

Kansas might not be playing all that well – to be kind – but the O worked against Duke, the backfield has a few decent options if they can get any room, and …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma will call its shot.

Kansas will surprise with an early score, but the Sooners will go on a big scoring run with the running game tearing off home run after home run. It’ll be over at halftime.

Coastal Carolina vs Appalachian State Game Preview

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

The machine marches on.

There was a good fight against Buffalo, but that’s been it with three straight blowout wins thanks to an offense that went from great to totally unstoppable.

How good have the Chanticleers been? Okay, so UMass, Arkansas State, and ULM might night seem all that great, but ULM just whacked Liberty. Coastal Carolina beat those three by a combined score of 165 to 29 with the nation’s No. 2 offense behind Ohio State, the No. 1 most efficient attack, the No. 1 scoring offense, the No. 1 best O on third downs, and it keeps rolling on from there.

The defense has been great, too.

On the flip side, for all of the good things Appalachian State has done, it was just okay on third downs before cranking up an 0-for-11 day in a puzzling disaster of a performance last week against Louisiana.

The talent is there on the Mountaineers, and the defensive front is good enough to get into the Coastal Carolina backfield, but there are way too many holes in the game. However …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Appalachian State Will Win

Coastal Carolina doesn’t take the ball away. Start there, because it’s a big thing for Appalachian State.

The Chanticleers have just three takeaways on the year, and the Mountaineers could use the break after giving it up four times against Louisiana and nine times in the last four games.

More than any one thing Appalachian State can do, though – and when the ground game is on, it can run very, very well – is the competition. This team is battle-hardened, and Coastal Carolina isn’t.

ASU might have lost to Louisiana last week, but that’s a good team on the road. Marshall is solid. East Carolina will go bowling. Miami is struggling, but it’s still Miami, and Georgia State on the road isn’t all that bad a win.

Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina has faced one team in Buffalo that has a realistic shot of going bowling. The opponents Coastal Carolina has faced are a combined 11-26 and only 3-3 ULM doesn’t have a losing record.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Appalachian State is much, much better than the 41-13 loss to Louisiana, but can it keep up with a Coastal Carolina attack that’s hit the 200-yard mark in both rushing and passing in every game?

This is a massive step up in competition on a weird Wednesday night game, but the Chanticleers are more rested with 13 days off, the offense has been too sharp, and they’ll overcome a strong day by the Appalachian State running game to take total control of the Sun Belt race.
