Wake Forest vs Army Game Preview

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Wake Forest offense should have enough consistent pop to force Army out of its comfort zone.

WKU didn’t get its passing game going until late, Wisconsin didn’t get its passing attack going at all, and no one else on the slate has shown enough offense to bring a whole lot of push.

Wake Forest has been a 400-yard total offense machine after shutting it down after getting up big in the opener against Old Dominion. The attack works fast and should be able to push the Army secondary for a full 60 minutes.

The Demon Deacon defense is outstanding at getting into the backfield, it’s excellent at forcing takeaways, and …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Army Will Win

The Army ground game will work.

Wake Forest gave up 354 rushing yards in the tough win over Syracuse, and allowed over 200 yards to the Louisville ground game the week before.

Army might have had a hard time running against the killer Wisconsin run defense, and the team lost when it didn’t dominate Ball State, but it should be able to control the clock – it’ll hold the ball for at least 38 minutes – and it’ll own third downs, but …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

For this all to work, Army really has to dominate on the ground.

It’s 4-0 when running for 250 yards or more, and 0-2 when running for fewer.  Wake Forest has only allowed more than 210 rushing yards once, and it has the passing attack to strike quickly and keep the Black Knight offense on its toes.

Syracuse vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Syracuse Will Win

Can the Syracuse running game get going on the Hokies?

Virginia Tech’s defense hasn’t been all that bad, and it’s been great against the run up until allowing a season-high 208 yards in the loss to Pitt last week.

The Orange were kept in check by Clemson in last week’s loss, and they struggled against Rutgers, but they rolled on the ground against everyone else behind the 1-2 punch of RB Sean Tucker and – lately – QB Garrett Shrader.

Combine the ACC’s best rushing attack with a solid pass defense got hit hard by Wake Forest but held firm against everyone else – helped by a terrific pass rush – and Syracuse has a good combination to pull this off. However …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Syracuse passing game against Clemson was just plain sad.

Shrader isn’t awful at throwing the ball, but he’s more of a runner and he’s not consistent. Moving the chains isn’t easy for this bunch, and third down conversions appear to be a chore.

Virginia Tech’s defense is terrific on third downs and it can crank up a little bit of a pass rush, too.

This isn’t a team built to get into high-powered shootouts. It’ll be more than content to keep this in the 20s and take its chances at home in a grinding game …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

And that’s exactly what the Hokies are going to do.

Don’t expect a whole lot of big pass plays. Both teams will rely on their run defense, field position, and trying to take advantage of the opportunities to capitalize when there’s a chance.

It won’t be anything scintillating, but it’ll be a tight, entertaining game that stays close late.

Clemson vs Pitt Game Preview

Why Clemson Will Win

The defense still works.

The offense has a few issues, but the defensive side has yet to allow 400 yards, the run D has been great, and the pass defense only got hit for 300 in the loss to NC State.

For all of the disappointments and all of the problems across the board, the Tigers are still No. 1 in the ACC in pass efficiency defense, they’re great at holding up in the red zone, and they’ve only allowed more than 14 points once.

On the other side, as bad as the O has been, and as mediocre as the line has been for the running game, it’s not giving up a ton of plays behind the line. Pitt can be bombed on, but …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Pitt Will Win

No, really, the Clemson offense …

It’s all just a puzzling mess. There’s a ton of talent still there, but the ground attack just doesn’t go anywhere – even though it had a nice day against Boston College – and this thing just doesn’t score.

On the flip side, Kenny Pickett and the Pitt passing game have been tremendous. He’s coming off his worst game of the year – throwing for 2-3 yards after throwing for over 300 against everyone else – and the O should stretch out and test the Clemson D from the start.

The Panther defense is good enough. It’s been a tad inconsistent, but the pass rush is once again a killer and it’s nasty on third downs against an offense that can’t get the chains moving.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

While it goes against every fiber of being to pick against Clemson in an ACC game …

Pitt is playing too well.

Pickett won’t go off, but the Panther defense will keep the Tigers to their normal 17ish points whether they need them or not.

Clemson has been walking a tightrope in way too many games, and this time it’ll be just barely on the other side.

San Jose State vs UNLV Game Preview

Why San Jose State Will Win

The Spartans are trying to recapture the 2020 magic, and they almost got there last week against San Diego State in a tough overtime loss.

The offense hasn’t been consistent, but downfield passing game hasn’t been bad no matter who’s at quarterback. Nick Starkel wasn’t bad, but it was Nick Nash who was pushing the offense over the last few games.

The run defense has been tough and the pass rush hasn’t been bad – even if it’s not as strong as last year’s version.

Speaking of inconsistencies. UNLV can’t figure out how to win.

The offense hasn’t been able to move the chains, the defense has been worse at stopping third down tries, and the team can’t seem to get over the hump in close loss after close loss. But …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UNLV Will Win

The Rebels are SO due.

They haven’t won a game since the end of the 2019 season, but four of the six games this year were losses by eight points or fewer, and a few of them were against strong teams. The chances were there against Fresno State and UTSA, and the blowouts were against Arizona State and Iowa State.

Charles Williams continues to be one of the best backs in the Mountain West, the offense is coming up with a few more explosive plays, and the O is scoring when it gets its chances in the red zone.

Now the quarterback play has to be healthy and steadier, but …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Rebels keep a quarterback in one piece?

Doug Brumfield has had a back injury, Cameron Friel was starting to get rolling but got banged up late against Utah State, and Justin Rogers has had his own career injures, but …

The offense will finally get it done.

San Jose State’s O hasn’t been crisp enough, but if it’s mistake-free, it pulls off the win. That’s not a given, though – the team is one of the nation’s worst in turnover margin, being a -10 over the year.

The 2020 Spartans only lost the turnover battle once in seven games before the bowl game debacle against Ball State with a slew of players were out with covid concerns. This year they have yet to win the turnover battle in any of the seven games.

UNLV has its own turnover problems, but for once, the other side is going to have it a little worse.

SMU vs Tulane Game Preview

Why Tulane Will Win

So why is everything going so wrong?

There’s talent on Tulane, it was able to push Oklahoma early on, and there hasn’t been a whole lot of luck or fortunate breaks.

What’s going so wrong? Five tough games – at Oklahoma, at Ole Miss, UAB, at East Carolina, Houston. The Green Wave should’ve been able to hang with ECU a bit better and should’ve beaten Houston, but to be very, very, very fair, the program had hurricane issues to deal with over the first part of the season.

There’s enough of an offense to keep up against SMU.

The Tulane pass rush has the talent and pop to bother Tanner Mordecai and the SMU passing game that gets the ball out of his hands in a hurry, and the Green Wave passing attack will hit at least 200 yards against an SMU secondary that had issues with just about everyone who could throw.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why SMU Will Win

Mordecai has been just that good.

The former Oklahoma quarterback had a few interception issues – he threw three against TCU and two against North Texas – but he’s also hitting 71% of his passes and two or more touchdown passes in every game.

No, Tulane isn’t getting a whole lot of luck, but it’s not creating its own positivity, either. It’s getting destroyed in turnover margin – giving it away three times or more in three of the six games and being a -7 overall.

And yeah, playing Oklahoma and Ole Miss will skew the stats, but East Carolina went off for 52 points – helped by a ton of takeaways. The Tulane D has allowed 40 points or more in four of the six games, and …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

SMU will keep it going.

Tulane doesn’t run a triple-option like Navy does, but there are plenty of the same principles, and SMU was able to hold down the ground game. It’ll keep the Green Wave running attack from going off, but it’s not going to be easy.

Expect a whole lot of points, over 600 passing yards between the two attacks, and watch out for a whole lot of fun.

Florida Atlantic vs Charlotte Game Preview

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

The passing game should be fine

It sputtered against Air Force, and the offense as a whole struggled in the loss to UAB – N’Kosi Perry threw three picks – but the Charlotte defense that gave up 466 yards through the air to FIU and got rocked by Middle Tennessee is going to get thrown on.

The Owl offense is great at keeping the chains moving. They’ve got the balance to move on the ground to go along with 240 yards or more through the air in every game but one. Overall, the 400+ yards will be there, but …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Charlotte Will Win

Charlotte should be able to run the ball.

It’s not a consistent team – both losses game when the O failed to hit 300 yards – but when the ground game is working, everything is okay.

Florida Atlantic’s defense got run over by Florida and Air Force, but those are obvious outliers. The pass D is just okay against quarterbacks that can get into a rhythm, and Chris Reynolds can do that – he’s hitting over 70% of his passes over the last three games, and that’s what the Owls have to worry about.

It that happens, the running game is effective enough to control the game, but …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a bit feast-or-famine for the Florida Atlantic offense, but it’s done what it was supposed to against the mediocre defenses on the slate.

Charlotte has been able to survive when it allowed a ton of yards, though – beating Duke, Middle Tennessee, and FIU when allowing over 500 yards.

That’s not going to work out against Florida Atlantic.

Louisiana vs Arkansas State Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

Is that the real Louisiana?

It had a rough start in the loss to Texas, and it didn’t exactly rip through an easy part of the early slate with close win after close win – the blowout over Ohio aside.

But the running game was okay as the first half of the season went on, and the wins were there to mask the other problems, and then, out of the blue … bam. The Ragin’ Cajuns pulled off their best performance of the year by a mile, rolling through Appalachian State 41-13 in a game that was over about six minutes in.

By the way, Arkansas State is totally miserable against the run.

Everything started out fine against Central Arkansas, but everyone else came up with 200 rushing yards or more in the five-game losing streak.

If it’s possible to hit the 200-yard rushing mark on the first drive, Louisiana might do it against this D. But …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Arkansas State Will Win

It’s not like Louisiana has faced a who’s who of top passing attacks after starting the season against Texas.

The offenses that could throw a little bit were able to do it, but there were issues against South Alabama and a Nicholls State attack that rolled for close to 360 yards through the air.

No, Arkansas State doesn’t do much on D, but the passing game would be able to start bombing and keep going against a Ragin’ Cajun secondary that’s been good, but is about to be pushed harder than it has all year.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not like Arkansas State doesn’t have talent.

Yes, the defense has been bad, and yes, it’s been a rough start to the Butch Jones era with five straight losses after the opener. But there might be a reason for that …

Memphis, at Washington, at Tulsa, at Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina.

The Red Wolves either played teams that were better, or lost a tough road game, or both.

That doesn’t excuse a D that’s had such a rough time, but as good as Louisiana has been, it’s playing someone its own size at home.

It’ll be a good battle, but the Arkansas State defense won’t be able to get the job done when it needs a few big fourth quarter stops.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Ohio State vs Indiana Game Preview

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Indiana offense isn’t there.

It was fun against Idaho, and it worked okay against WKU, but in Big Ten play it scored a grand total of 21 points in three games. Granted, the Hoosiers faced Iowa, Penn State, and Michigan State, but it’s not like Ohio State is a week off – even with its mediocre D.

On the flip side, the Ohio State O is the most productive in college football. It was five yards away from 500 in the opener against Minnesota and cranked up well over five bills against everyone since.

QB CJ Stroud has settled in. He’s playing at a Heisman-level stat-wise, TreVeyon Henderson might be the best running back in college football, and Indiana doesn’t have any prayer of keeping up any sort of pace if the Buckeye machine gets going early.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Indiana Will Win

The Ohio State defense is a whole lot better now that it’s not dealing with Oregon, but it’s still a bit suspect.

Granted, most teams are throwing to try keeping up the pace – and not doing a good job of it – but Akron is the only team that couldn’t get to 200 yards through the air.

IU can’t make this any sort of a shootout, and time of possession won’t matter that much since the Buckeyes can go on a one-play scoring drive at almost any time, but controlling the clock as much as possible matters.

The Hoosiers are good in the time of possession battle, overall the defense has done its part to keep games alive. No one has gouged them yet, with Cincinnati being held to just 328 yards and getting key points from the special teams. And …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Indiana is incredibly plucky.

It hasn’t been able get the season going thanks to a slate with four top ten-caliber teams in the first six outings.

It couldn’t do anything offensively against Penn State, but even in the 24-0 loss the game never got out of hand. The Iowa loss was over fast thanks to turnovers and a big early offensive hit, but the Michigan State game was a close fight and Cincinnati was there for the taking.

Yeah … this one won’t be that close.

The rested Buckeye offense will need a little while to stretch its legs, and then the big play drives will come. The IU offense won’t be able to keep up the fight after the midway point of the third. Then it’ll open up.

Maryland vs Minnesota Game Preview

Why Maryland Will Win

The program really, really, really needed to take a breath.

The first four games were fun. There was a decent win over West Virginia, and the win over Illinois on the road was interesting, and then came the dates with Iowa and Ohio State. 117-31 later, the Terps got a week off to rest up and recharge against a weird Minnesota team.

The offense only sort of works.

The backfield is banged up, the offense failed to get to 300 yards against Bowling Green and Purdue, and then it almost hit 400 last week against Nebraska.

The Gophers don’t really have much of a passing offense – QB Tanner Morgan picked a great time to come up with one of his best games of the year – and the Terps have too good a pass rush and a decent enough run D to get hit too hard. However …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Minnesota Will Win

Minnesota has become one of those teams that figures it out … sort of.

You don’t suffer one of the worst losses by any Power Five team this year – dropping a strange game to Bowling Green 14-10 – if everything is going well, but the Gophers were able to beat the Purdue team that just beat Iowa, and they were able to get by a desperate Nebraska last week.

Throw in the blowout win over Colorado, and a victory of a Miami University team that’s in the thick of the MAC race, and everything is okay despite the losses at running back, the loss to Ohio State, and whatever that was against Bowling Green.

The run defense continues to be great – it hasn’t allowed more than 136 yards since the opener against the Buckeyes – the offensive line is powering through for whatever back is healthy, and Maryland has a massive turnover problem that should help the cause.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Terps get their groove back?

If the offense works, they have the speed and upside to set a pace the Gophers can’t keep up with.
