Wisconsin vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Wisconsin Will Win

The defense continues to be incredible.

The entire Badger offense owes the other side a cookie for keeping the season alive, holding Illinois to 93 total yards two weeks ago and stuffing Army for 179 rushing yards last week in a way-too-tight 20-14 win.

For all of the team’s problems, it’s No. 2 in the nation in total defense behind Georgia, the team is fourth in the country in time of possession, and it’s third against the run.

Purdue doesn’t run, and even though it controls the clock, it’s not going to win the time of possession battle against this team. However …

Why Purdue Will Win

The Wisconsin defense has an Achilles heel. It’ll do everything right, but try three big pass plays, and two will work. That’s enough to get by considering how miserable the Badger offense is.

You don’t get to be as good as the Wisconsin D is without knowing how to take away the opposing main guy, but it’s going to have a problem with David Bell, who has four 100-yard receiving games in five outings and all but ruined the Iowa season last week with 11 catches for 240 yards and a score.

Even more than that, Purdue has a defense, too.

As Iowa found out, this is a different Purdue team. The offense is fine, but it’s the other side that takes over game – it hasn’t allowed 300 yards of total offense in the last three games.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers.

Wisconsin’s offense is like clockwork in its ability to give the ball away, but Purdue’s defense – four takeaways against Iowa aside – doesn’t force turnovers.

The Badger offense can’t throw at all.

Graham Mertz has – let’s be kind here; he’s a college kid – struggled, and now he’ll have to deal with Purdue DE George Karlaftis jumping on his head for a full four quarters. But all Mertz has to do is not royally screw up.

Mertz will turn it over twice, the passing attack won’t go anywhere, and Bell and the Purdue air show will connect on two big home runs, and …

It’s all going to come down to defense and control of the clock.

Wisconsin does both of those things better.

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Can D’Metik Trice possibly keep it all going?

The senior guard went wacko late against Illinois hitting three after three after three on the way to 29 points as he almost brought the team back against a Big Ten power player. It wasn’t enough, but he was fantastic.

Wisconsin needed that pop.

Purdue might be playing well lately, but it hasn’t played a who’s who of Big Ten teams since losing to Michigan in late January. Wisconsin’t defense is still good against the mediocre teams, and the offense is hitting enough from three to keep pushing, but …

Why Purdue Will Win

Mr. Trice aside, the Badgers have gone brutally cold from the field and isn’t hitting from three. They only hit 40% or more from three once in their last 13 games, the’ve only hit 40% from the field once in the last five games, and worst of all, the defense has sort of stopped.

Iowa and Illinois were able to fire at will, and Michigan didn’t have any problems scoring when it had to.

No, Purdue hasn’t played a slew of killers, but it’s shooting incredibly well lately and the defense is doing what Wisconsin’s is supposed to.

The Boilermakers can stop the three, and the Badgers can’t.

What’s Going To Happen

Wisconsin just can’t pull up out of the nosedive – at least against the decent teams. However, again, Purdue has pulled off wins lately against the mediocre, and it’s not doing anything special against the great teams because there haven’t been any on the slate for a while.

Wisconsin, though, is currently one of those mediocre teams. Purdue’s defense will outplay the Badger D in a bit of a slugfest.

It’s a streak Purdue would rather forget. It’s been 13 straight games that Wisconsin has beaten the Boilermakers. It will be a tall order for Purdue to win on the road against No. 14 Wisconsin. Last year’s game was a thriller, with Wisconsin winning 47-44 in triple overtime.

Purdue (4-6, 3-4) has to win its final two games to qualify for a bowl game. Two years ago in Madison, the Boilermakers forced multiple red zone turnovers and even blocked a punt, but scored just nine points. With injuries at key positions, backup quarterback Aidan O’Connell leads the offense. He went 34-for-50 with 271 yards and two touchdowns vs. Northwestern in a 24-22 win last weekend. The Boilermakers outscored the Wildcats 17-6 in the second half. Wide receiver David Bell, who leads the Big Ten with 65 catches, had 14 catches for 115 yards.

For Wisconsin (8-2, 5-2), it’s all about winning its final two games to make it to the Big Ten Championship game. While the Boilermakers depend on their passing game, it’s all about running the ball for the Badgers. The team is averaging 235.1 rushing yards per game due in large part to Heisman hopeful Jonathan Taylor. His 5,634 rushing yards are the most all-time by an FBS player before their senior season. Wisconsin beat Nebraska 37-21 last weekend after quarterback Jack Coan passed for 162 yards and one touchdown and Taylor ran for 204 yards on 25 carries. Taylor has rushed for 540 yards in two games against Purdue, including a hefty 321 last year.
