West Virginia vs TCU Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

So what’s going right on this ship?

It’s been a rough three-game losing stretch with losses to Texas Tech and Baylor to go along with a 16-13 fight to a pre-Caleb Williams-starting Oklahoma. However, the defense continues to be a killer against the run.

The pass defense had its worst day of the year against Baylor, and it’s allowing 220 yards or more in every game against FBS teams, but the defensive front has been a rock with no one getting past 171 yards.

TCU likes its balance, and it needs it with a defense that gets gouged.

The Horned Frogs are going through a defense-optional season, allowing 525 yards or more in three of the last four games, and losing to Texas in the one outlier. But …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why TCU Will Win

The TCU offense has been terrific.

QB Max Duggan is gutting it out through a foot injury, but the attack is still rolling with over 430 yards in every game but the loss to Texas and a season-high 529 yards last week against Oklahoma.

The O is doing just about everything about as right as possible, dominating on third downs, owning the offensive line, and it’s not turning the ball over enough to matter.

West Virginia doesn’t have the offensive pop to keep up if the Horned Frogs can get up fast.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can the TCU defense do anything to come up with a few stops to let the offense take over?

Can the West Virginia offense do anything to go on enough good drives to let the defense win the game?

Basically – throwing out the game against Long Island – the West Virginia offense stalled in the second half of the season-opener against Maryland, and it hasn’t quite been all to get it back. The TCU offense will come up with a few early scores, and the Mountaineers won’t be able to chase them down.

Why TCU Will Win

The Horned Frogs were pesky in the first meeting a week ago in the 74-66 loss to the Mountaineers.

They shot well, weren’t bad from three, and they clamped down defensively from the outside make it a fight. That’s what they do.

They’re good at coming up with blocks and their style is solid a keeping scores low and games relatively close, but only if they’re hitting their shots. As long as they’re making 40% from the field – and that comes from moving the ball around well – they’re in this.

They came up with a 2021-high 19 assists, but …

Why West Virginia Will Win

TCU played well and West Virginia still won.

The Mountaineers are shooting fine, they’re coming up with a whole lot of assists, and the defense has been able to rise up and clamp down on the right times – other than in the overtime loss to Baylor.

TCU has been way too flaky from the field. Yeah, it might have been fine against West Virginia, but it only hit 40% or better in two of the last six games.

What’s Going To Happen

The Mountaineers haven’t lost a Big 12 game in regulation – dropping the recent dates with Oklahoma and Baylor in overtime – since early January, and they’re not going to whiff now.

They’re playing like a top ten team that’s pushing for a No. 2 seed, and they’ll make a strong statement against a Horned Frog offense that’ll be a bit punchless.

West Virginia (15-6) vs TCU (11-9) Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Mountaineer offense has geared it up for the finishing kick.

It was good from the start of the season but it went through a wee bit of a midseason lull scoring around 70ish per game, but everything cranked up over the last seven games, scoring 80 or more in six of them.

What’s different? The competition has stepped up and the Mountaineers have to keep up, but the shooting has been good, the team has been great at getting to the free throw ling, and it’s the best team in the Big 12 at coming up with offensive rebounds.

TCU doesn’t have the defense to force the turnovers it needs, but …

Why TCU Will Win

The team knows how to hit the boards. When it dominates on the glass, it wins games.

The defense has been solid at defending the three, there are enough blocked shots to be intimidating at times, and when things are working, the team has a way of grinding things down to a stop when needed.

The West Virginia defense hasn’t been as strong as it usually is under Bob Huggins, however …

What’s Going To Happen

TCU doesn’t score enough to keep up. West Virginia’s offense really has been amazing, and TCU struggled to get to 70 points even when things are working well. It might be a semi-dangerous focus game against a desperate team, but the Mountaineers will shoot their way through it.

Why West Virginia Will Win

TCU isn’t very good at college basketball at the moment.

It’s on a rough run of nine losses in its last 11 games thanks to an offense that doesn’t seem all that interested in scoring. It can’t hit free throws, and it’s not pumping in enough points despite leading the Big 12 in three point attempts.

It’s going to get slaughtered by the Mountaineer killers who crush it on the offensive boards, but there might not be a whole lot of big misses considering there isn’t enough defense to bother any of the outside shooters.

West Virginia doesn’t do much from three, but when it needs to, the points should be there.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why TCU Will Win

West Virginia doesn’t have the consistency from three to get excited about.

TCU has to get hot early and it has to keep making it rain. It’s not afraid to keep chucking it up. In WVU’s last 15 games, it’s 11-4 when allowing teams to connect on fewer than 33% of their three – 0-4 when teams hit more.

TCU connects on 33.7% from beyond the arc.

The Mountaineers will turn the ball over early and often if pressured. TCU has to force easy points, and again – just to hammer this home – it has to connect from the outside.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not going to be the brutal blowout the 81-49 Mountaineer win was back a few weeks ago, but TCU won’t do enough offensively to keep up.

WVU seemingly hit everything from the field in the first matchup, and it’ll generate a whole slew of easy points again with enough steals and enough easy chances to survive a good Horned Frog effort.

West Virginia (4-7) vs. TCU (5-6) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Mountaineers might be on a brutal run of six losses in its last seven games, but they’ve at least been interesting with more offensive pop once Jarret Doege took over.

The former Bowling Green quarterback hit Kansas State for three touchdowns in the win two weeks ago, and threw for over 300 yards with just a little more happening – but not enough – in last week’s loss to Oklahoma State.

Most of all, he’s not making any big mistakes, and that’s big against a TCU defense with eight picks in the last five games.

On the other side, the West Virginia defense has been able to do just enough to keep the team in games. It’s getting defense pressure up front, and the TCU offensive line is struggling in pass protection for an air attack coming off a 65-yard day against Oklahoma.

Scoring matters. TCU has lost the last five times when it failed to hit the 30-point mark – the Mountaineers haven’t allowed more than 20 in three of the last four. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why TCU Will Win

West Virginia isn’t scoring.

Doege has been a plus, but there’s absolutely no running game and the downfield passing game isn’t good enough, currently ranking last in the Big 12 in yards per completion.

Yes, TCU is struggling when the offense isn’t hitting 30, but it’s far better equipped and far better when it’s able to take over by moving the chains. Time of possession is almost everything to the Horned Frogs, able to hang on to the ball for over 33 minutes a game.

West Virginia doesn’t control the clock or the tempo.

With no running game, the midrange passes have to keep things moving, but the Horned Frogs are terrific on third downs on both sides of the ball, WVU is dead last in the Big 12 in third down conversions, and this should be a bit of a grind.

At home, and with a bowl game on the line, TCU should have everything turned up a few notches, however …

What’s Going To Happen

West Virginia was able to beat the best team in the Big 12 in time of possession – Kansas State – and it’s going to give the Horned Frogs a fight.

TCU’s defense, though, will keep the Mountaineers to under 50 rushing yards, Doege and the passing game won’t be able to move the chains, and it’ll be the sixth win needed for the home side – even if there’s nothing pretty about it.
