Wake Forest (8-3) vs. Syracuse (4-7) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Wake Forest Will Win

And there’s the Syracuse we all know and love.

The Orange played out of its gourd in a 49-6 win over Duke, and then Syracuse went Syracuse and didn’t stop a thing in a 56-34 loss to Louisville.

Wake Forest might be sliding a bit after losing star receiver Sage Surratt, but it has a shot at nine wins and one of the ACC’s better bowl games.

And the offense is still good.

The attack will keep the production going on third downs against an Orange defense that’s getting picked clean, but the bigger issue throughout the season for SU has been an offensive line that can’t handle anyone’s pass rush.

The Demon Deacons have one of their best days of the year getting into the backfield, generating five sacks against Duke.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Syracuse Will Win

At home in the season finale, here’s where the passing game needs to air it out.

The passing game worked against Louisville with Tommy DeVito having a solid day, and Clayton Welch filling in during a stretch and throwing for close to 100 yards.

It’s possible to push the ball deep on the Demon Deacon secondary that allowed nine yards per throw or more in four of the last seven games. Inside, this is the enough-is-enough game – it’s Syracuse’s bowl.

The team needs a few breaks, though.

Wake Forest isn’t bad when it comes to turnovers, but Syracuse is a +6 over the last six games with just two giveaways. This should be a shootout, and just one turnover might be the difference.

What’s Going To Happen

Syracuse will give it the true college try, and it’ll play at another level in the final game of the season. It’ll get enough offensive production to be interesting, but the Demon Deacons will be steadier for a full four quarters. Enjoy the passing games, enjoy the show … it’ll be fun.

Can UH win their ninth game on senior night?

No one celebrates senior night quite like Hawai’i as they honor 23 seniors this Saturday. The copious amount of flower and candy leis drowns the faces of the players as they take their last walk onto the field. If they can somehow beat Boise State the following week it will be the last time ever most of the seniors will take the field at Aloha Stadium.

But the seniors and the rest of the Rainbow Warrior football team will first solely concentrate on beating a tough Army team. This will be the fifth overall meeting between the two teams with UH leading the series 3-1 and 2-0 in Honolulu. The last meeting in 2018 Army squeaked by Hawai’i in West Point 28-21.

Hawai’i head coach Nick Rolovich said it best that this team only has three games left to play for each other, for the university and for the state. Meaning they will not rest starters in getting ready for the MW championship game unless they are still recovering from an injury. Let’s see how the ‘Bows can manage a victory over the Black Knights:

Chasing Chevan

We probably won’t know who the starter is for this game until game day but whoever starts needs to be effective either with their arm or legs and score points early. Hawai’i redshirt freshmen QB Chevan Coideiro led the ‘Bows down the field with his legs after Cole McDonald was pulled from the game in the third quarter of last week’s nail bitter win against San Diego State.

It will be tough for Army to prepare for both QBs and limit the big plays from WRs JoJo Ward, Cedric Byrd and yards after catch from Jared Smart and Jason- Matthew Sharsh.

If one element of the run and shoot clicks the other elements will be effective and I still believe running the ball with Miles Reed will open up the QB run or pull the LBs forward giving more open space for Hawaii’s receivers.

Doing their 1/11th

The proven way to stop a triple-option team is each defensive player is responsible for their guy. You need to be focused every down otherwise it just takes one missed assignment and the ball carrier will score from sixty yards out. The Army offense can be plain and simple but effective averaging 302 yards on the ground. It’s pounding you with the RB/FB in Connor Slomka(572 rush yds) or QB keep with the leading rusher Kelvin Hopkins Jr(619 rush yds.)

It’s been impressive to see the defense has stepped up in the last three games and keeping the last two opponents to just 7 and 11 points per game. Yes the last two opponents had subpar offenses but it seems they are playing better through communication and tackling. I don’t see as much blown coverages or missed tackles as much as the first half of the season and so it looks promising for the team overall that when in close games the defense can step up seal the victory.

I’m looking for senior LB Solomon Matautia and senior CB Ikem Okeke to have big games this Saturday.

Rumble on the rock

There were only 21,000+ at last week’s game but it sounded like 35,000. The team really fed from the crowd’s energy especially on 3rd down defense. With this last game guaranteed to be played at Aloha Stadium it might be the last chance the fans can should show up in numbers to support a team that is giving their all and not giving up. When the ceiling in the locker rooms rumble from the crowd stomping the team feels it. I’m not sure if a 7:30pm kickoff will affect the attendance but UH hopes for a big turn out to celebrate the seniors and the ‘Bows ninth victory.

Prediction

It may be closer to most Hawai’i fan’s liking but I predict UH offense will put up more points than the past two games and the defense will make a final stop to Army’s last drive.

Hawai’i 28 Army 21

Game Day Preview: No. 20 Boise State heads to Colorado State to Finish the Regular Season

Broncos Seek their First Undefeated Season in Mountain West Conference Play

Contact/Follow @MWCwire

Boise State vs. Colorado State is the finale.

Boise State heads south to Fort Collins for the last game of the 2019 regular season.  The Broncos have already clinched the Mountain Division while Hawaii has locked up the West Division, setting up a rematch from earlier in the year on the Blue Turf for the Mountain West Championship Game next week.

The Broncos do have some business to attend to before that championship game in the form of the Colorado State Rams. The Rams have had a disappointing season and were eliminated last week from bowl eligibility by the Wyoming Cowboys.

Colorado State has never defeated Boise State in football before so knocking off the Mountain West’s premier franchise will be extra sweet in their final game of the year if the Rams can pull off the upset. Meanwhile, Boise State will look to finish 8-0 in conference play which would be a first for the Broncos since joining the Mountain West in 2011.

Head to Head Record: Boise State 8 wins, Colorado State 0 wins

Bronco/Ram History Rewind

Colorado State began football play in 1893 and were an independent until joining the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 1909 before moving to the Mountain State Conference in 1938 and finally the Skyline Conference in 1948.  The Rams returned to independency in 1962 before making the jump to the Western Athletic Conference in 1968.

Boise State would join the ranks of the Western Athletic Conference in 2001 but Colorado State had departed the WAC for the Mountain West Conference in 1998.  Boise State would themselves join the MWC in 2011.

Despite the relatively close proximity between the schools, Colorado State and Boise State did not meet on the football field until they became conference mates in 2011. The Broncos and Rams have played every year since then and were both placed in the Mountain Division in 2013 when the conference expanded to 12 teams.

Boise State has won all 8 matchups since 2011 and many have them been by lopsided scores.  However, the 2017 game was quite memorable. Colorado State jumped out to a 28-3 lead but due to the heroics of Cedric Wilson and Alexander Mattison, Boise State was able to rally and force overtime when they were able to score a stunning victory with a final margin of 59-52.

Colorado State Season Rewind

The fifth season under Mike Bobo has not gone according to plan for Colorado State. After getting smoked by in state rival Colorado, the Rams got in the win column by defeating an FCS opponent at home. The Rams proceeded to lose the next 4 games and slipped to 1-5 at the midway point of the year. To make matters worse, Colorado State would lose their starting quarterback Colin Hill for the year during this period.

Coach Bobo and company would finally stop the hemorrhaging with a road trip to New Mexico where the Rams were able to knock off the Lobos.  Colorado State carried the momentum over to score a stunning upset victory on the road at Fresno State and followed that with another win at home over UNLV.  During this time, new quarterback Patrick O’Brien distinguished himself with solid play on the field and the Rams looked to have a hope of getting to a bowl game in 2019.

The good times would quickly come to a halt though.  Colorado State would lose to instate rival Air Force by 17 points and then get defeated in the Border War by Wyoming by 10 points and fall to 4-7.  Without any postseason hopes remaining, Coach Bobo and Patrick O’Brien will throw everything they have at the Broncos and look to end the year on a positive note.

Rankings

In the College Football Playoff Rankings, the Broncos held fast at 20th despite their blowout victory last week. Meanwhile in the traditional polls, the Broncos find themselves also at 20th in the AP Poll and 19th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Colorado State is not receiving votes in either poll.  Jeff Sagarin’s computer rankings have the Broncos checking in as the 26th best team in division 1 football and the Rams find themselves at 109th.

Virginia Tech (8-3) vs. Virginia (8-3) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Virginia Will Win

Okay, Bryce Perkins. Now it’s on.

The Virginia star quarterback failed to hit half of his passes in last year’s game against Virginia Tech, but he was still brilliant with 259 passing yards, three touchdowns, 112 rushing yards …

And one very, very big fumbled handoff that ended last year’s insane 34-31, Hokie win in overtime.

Now it’s Perkins’ time for redemption.

He’s had an okay year, but not a special one. Even so, been stronger on the ground – with two 100-yard rushing days before the blowout win over Liberty – and with no picks in his last three games. He’s playing his best all-around ball of the year at just the right time.

On the other side, the great Cavalier pass rush has to be effective from the start. The Virginia Tech offensive line is doing a good job, but it struggled a bit against the outstanding pressure from the Pitt D, allowing three sacks and ten tackles for loss. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies still beat the Panthers 28-0.

Freshman quarterback Hendon Hooker was so bothered by the Pitt pass rush that he averaged close to 12 yards per pass with two touchdowns, no picks, and connected on ten of his 13 throws.

The guy has been unflappable.

He’s not making mistakes, he’s taking what the defenses are giving him, and he’s providing a downfield element that might just change around the Hokie program.

Virginia Tech has won six of its last seven games – Hooker wasn’t able to go against Notre Dame.

He’s been great, and the defensive side has stepped up its play, too. The Hokie run defense has been a wall, allowing fewer than 65 rushing yards in each of its last three games, and fewer than 100 in five of its last seven after gettin ripped up by Duke.

Virginia’s ground game has stepped it up with 16 touchdown runs in the last five games, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever (pause to take breath) ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER mess with a college football streak.

Most of the players in this game were barely running around the last time Virginia was able to get by Virginia Tech.

2003. 15 straight years. This time around, the ACC Coastal title is on the line with the winner going off to face Clemson next weekend.

This Virginia team is good, it’s playing well, Perkins is terrific, the linebacking corps is a killer – with the parts to bother Hooker the Hokie all game long – and the game is in Charlottesville.

Virginia Tech is playing better, Hooker is that good, the defense is coming up with two straight shutouts, and …

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever …

Florida (9-2) vs. Florida State (6-5) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Florida State Will Win

A two-game-winning streak is a two-game winning streak.

There might be a slew of problems for the next Seminole head coach to worry about, but for now, the team is playing with a bit more bounce thanks to a passing game that got big play after big play from James Blackman.

Beating Boston College and Alabama State might not be any big deal, but with a bowl game on the line and needing to win the last two games before dealing with this trip down the road, the team stepped up after the Willie Taggart firing and produce two straight 300-yard games through the air.

Blackman hit BC or 346 yards and two big scores, and enjoyed the scrimmage against ASU with three touchdown passes and more big bombs.

The Gators have NFL talent in the secondary, but it’s possible to throw on this group.

Joe Burrow took target practice in LSU’s win, and Jake Fromm came up with a sharp day in Georgia’s win. Those were the only two times this year the Gators allowed more than eight yards per pass.

Blackman is averaging eight yards per throw.

To keep up the pace he’s going to have to hit the big play, because …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Florida Will Win

Kyle Trask is good.

The 6-5, 240-pounder announced he was coming back or another year after taking over for an injured Feleipe Franks and growing into a better-than-you-might-think prospect.

He’s been hitting on the big throws averaging over eight yards per pass with 21 touchdowns and six picks – he’ll have no problems matching whatever the Seminole quarterbacks do.

The Gators might have the line and the ability to grind it out, but they don’t. Trask and the passing game have been too sharp.

The Florida passing game has hit the 200-yard mark in every game with multiple touchdown passes in every game but one, and now it gets to go off against a FSU secondary that’s a shadow of the versions from a few years ago.

On the other side, the Florida State offensive line is still an issue. It’s allowing way too many sacks and way too many plays behind the line, and now the Gators get back their best pass rusher. Jabari Zuniga is back from an ankle injury, and now he’s going to be unleashed on one of the nation’s least-productive offensive fronts.

What’s Going To Happen

Florida State is bowl eligible. It did what it needed to do to start a new streak of bowl appearances, it rallied back from the adversity, and it did it all before this game.

Now it’s about to run into a wall.

Florida not only needs to win this, but it has to do it impressively.

It’s 11th in the latest CFP rankings, and Penn State is tenth. Penn State gets to call its shot against Rutgers – it’s going to be 10-2 without having to try.

The Gators will be 10-2, too, but it’s going to take an impressive blowout to get the committee to like the overall body of work a little bit more. If that happens, a New Year’s Six game is a possibility.

Florida will roll, the defensive front will live behind the FSU line, and after whacking Vanderbilt and Missouri by a combined score of 79-6, it’ll come up with a third straight blowout to close out a strong regular season with its tenth win.

Texas A&M (7-4) vs. LSU (11-0) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Texas A&M Will Win

QB Kellen Mond, your table is ready.

As good as LSU might be – whether or not it’s No. 2 in the CFP rankings or in the to spot – it’s having problems defensively.

Who have the top five defenses in college football? Ohio State, Clemson, Utah, Michigan and Georgia. Four of those teams are deep in the College Football Playoff discussion, and the other is a not-that-bad team that’s probably going to finish up in the top 15 overall.

By the way, Minnesota is tenth in the nation in total D. Where is LSU?

43rd.

It’s been able to make up for the issues with its unstoppable offense, but it’s also been playing with fire.

Mond might have thrown six touchdown passes in last year’s epic 74-72 win over the Tigers, but he wasn’t exactly on – it was the only time all season long he failed to connect on half of his throws.

This year he’s been a bit erratic, he hasn’t been huge in the bigger games, and he hasn’t had the season the team needed out of him against one of the nation’s most brutal schedules.

This is the game to make up for it.

The Aggies are going bowling, they have nothing to lose, and they can just let it rip after putting up a nice fight in a 19-13 loss at Georgia. Considering the rain throughout the first half, Mond was solid.

LSU’s secondary has allowed 200 yard or more seven times, gave up over 400 passing yards to Tua Tagovailoa and Sam Ehlinger, and now it’s Mond’s turn to come up with a signature game.

On the other side, the A&M secondary has been brilliant over the second half of the year – it hasn’t allowed a quarterback to hit half of his passes over the last five games.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why LSU Will Win

Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

It’s Joe Burrow’s Heisman to lose, but it’s a 5-9, 209-pound pinball of a running back who’s been the closer.

It took just six carries or Edwards-Helaire to go 188 yards with three touchdowns last week against Arkansas to make it four straight 100-yard games, and now he has to be a difference-maker to at least make the A&M defense worry about the ground game.

The Aggies have been great against the run lately, but they had their problems against the teams that committed to the ground game – Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Auburn. That’s where Edwards-Helaire comes in.

Burrow will be Burrow. He’s been able to produce against the Florida secondary, the Alabama defense, and everyone else thrown at him – he’ll hit his normal share of big plays this week. But when the team has needed to put games away with a few grinding moments to move the chains, it’s been Edwards-Helaire.

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, good … luck.

How are we supposed to enjoy whatever is about to happen in Baton Rouge after the last game these two played?

The 74-72, seven-overtime thing that went on the last time these two played was a hoot, but this time around it’s even more important.

LSU can go from the nation’s absolute No. 1 team to out of the College Football Playoff if it loses this week and then gets dropped by Georgia in the SEC Championship.

On the other side, A&M is already bowl eligible, but after already having to play Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, and Auburn – and losing all four games – this would be the signature win in the Jimbo Fisher era.

Yes, even more than what happened last year.

But LSU’s defense will answer the call with one of its better performances, considering the circumstances.

Don’t be surprised if being dropped to No. 2 by the College Football Playoff committee lights a wee bit of a fire under a team that doesn’t exactly have a problem with motivation.

Burrow and the Tiger O will be fine, but they’ll have to battle to put the game away late – A&M’s style and pace will be a problem. The slightly-maligned D will rock against the run, and the secondary won’t let Mond do anything too special.

It’ll be fun. Just not seven-overtime fun.

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Can the Commodores get the running game going?

The offense might not be consistent, and it might have had major problems scoring or long, long stretches, but when the ground attack works, the team can usually maintain control.

Vanderbilt is 3-1 when it runs for 150 yards or more – the one loss coming to UNLV – and 0-7 when it doesn’t.

The offensive line has had issues all season long generating any sort of a consistent push, but when it’s able to do the bare minimum, everything else seems to kick in.

In its final game of the year, this is where Vandy has to bust out the O that pounded away on East Tennessee State last week. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Tennessee Will Win

Beyond Tennessee not being East Tennessee State, the Vol run defense has managed to be terrific against all but the very, very good ground attacks.

Kentucky is doing nothing but running so far, Georgia is Georgia, and Georgia State came up with something out of the blue in the opening game of the year. Those are the only three FBS teams to run for 150 yards or more.

Vanderbilt doesn’t have an efficient enough passing game to make up for the ground attack when it’s not rocking, but the secondary might end up being the bigger problem if the Volunteer passing game stays hot.

Jarrett Guarantano has had his ups and downs this season, but he’s been brilliant over the last few games. He only threw eight passes against Kentucky, but he connected on seven of them with two scores and a few big plays.

Against Missouri last week he threw for 415 yards and two touchdowns. When he’s on, the Vols can rock the deep plays.

Vanderbilt isn’t rocking anything with its passing game.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a wee bit lost in the fog of the season, but Tennessee is just a few plays away from having a relatively special campaign. Had it been able to pull of those early games against Georgia State and BYU, it would be 8-3 right now and everyone would be gushing.

As it is, it’ll have to settle for being 7-5 and on its way to a bowl game before going into the offseason as a program on the rise. First, it’ll roll past a Vanderbilt team that won’t have enough offense to keep up after the Vols get up early with two quick scoring drives.

Why Louisville Will Win

The defense might be a bit hit-or-miss, but the offense is going off.

The downfield passing game has opened up with the most efficient attack in the ACC – even better than Clemson’s – but the offense can still control the clock and is still great at dominating the time of possession battle.

The Cardinals have thrown for 200 yards or more in eight of their last ten games and averaged over ten yards per throw in all eight of those. Micale Cunningham is averaging more than 12 yards per pass in his last four games with 12 touchdown passes and just two picks.

Kentucky’s offense has been better and stronger lately and closing out drives with points, but it’s a one-dimensional attack. The Wildcat passing game only hit the 100-yard mark once in the last seven games, but …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Kentucky Will Win

The running game has been devastating.

The Wildcats had to adapt after injuries hit the quarterbacks, and WR Lynn Bowden took over under center and the ground attack took off – by necessity.

The offense has rushed for close to 300 yards or more five times in the last six games, and over 400 in each of the last two.

Louisville isn’t awful defensively compared to last year, but it’s hardly a rock, allowing close to five yards per carry and giving up multiple scores six times.

On the other side, the Cardinal offensive line is great for the ground game, but it’s allowing way too many plays in the backfield. UK’s pass rush is just good enough to bother Cunningham.

What’s Going To Happen

Kentucky needs to own the clock, keep the score relatively low, and can’t get into a shootout. The problem is that Louisville controls games, but in a different sort of way.

The Cardinals will take advantage of their offensive opportunities, and UK won’t quite be able to keep up the pace. The Wildcat running game will roll, but Louisville will be more effective. UofL’s defense will be a bit better on third downs.

Georgia (10-1) vs. Georgia Tech (3-8) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Georgia Will Win

Georgia Tech can hit the downfield throw when it takes its shots, but in bulk yards, it has the ACC’s worst passing game, averaging just 143 yards per game while completing 48% of its throws.

The Yellow Jackets have to run to win, but …

The Georgia run defense is awesome.

No. 4 in the latest round of College Football Playoff rankings, the Bulldogs can go to the CFP with a win over LSU in the SEC Championship next week, but the CFP is out of the equation if the gack against the Yellow Jackets.

That’s where the run D takes over.

Georgia has allowed a grand total of one touchdown run all year – two weeks ago against Auburn – and has given up more than 100 yards just three times. Last week against Texas A&M, the Dawgs stuffed the Aggie ground game for -2 yards.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Georgia is going to have to run to win, too.

The Georgia Tech run defense isn’t anything special, the overall D is just decent enough to hold up against the mediocre offenses, and that’s been Georgia.

The Bulldogs have the offensive line to blast away, but the offense hasn’t scored more than 27 points over the last six games, and that’s partly because the passing game isn’t working. As good as Jake Fromm is, the Bulldogs haven’t completed more than 48% of their passes over the last three games.

Georgia Tech might not have a pass rush, and the secondary gives up yards, but the defense isn’t getting gouged that badly.

Only North Carolina has thrown for more than 260 yards on this group. It can be burned from time to time, but hasn’t allowed multiple touchdown passes in any of its last four games.

What’s Going To Happen

The Bulldogs aren’t going to blow it now.

The offense will be sharp and efficient, the defense will dominate from the start, and even though it won’t be a wipeout in the first half, Georgia will have control at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets will manage two decent scoring drives, but they won’t be nearly enough to offset the 250 rushing yards the Yellow Jackets will give up.
