Virginia vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies have more to play for … sort of.

This is the rivalry game that matters for both sides. Virginia Tech owned this for a long, long time before Virginia broke through a few years ago, and a coaching change and all the turmoil isn’t an excuse to lose to that team.

And Virginia Tech needs this win to go bowling.

The team hasn’t been all that awful – the offense has come through enough to get to five wins, being competitive against Notre Dame, Syracuse, Miami, and West Virginia – and the defense has held up reasonably well.

Consistency hasn’t been a given with this group, but the secondary doesn’t give up a ton of yards, the offense doesn’t give up a ton of turnovers, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Virginia Will Win

Merely being safe and careful and okay doesn’t get it done against Virginia.

The Cavalier defense doesn’t have a pass rush, it doesn’t stop the run, and it’s too easy to move the ball on this group. However, Brennan Armstrong and the passing game bomb away like mad.

Virginia Tech has to be prepared to open it up, and it’s just not equipped to do that against a quarterback and passing game that rolled for 300 yards in every game he played in but the win over Miami.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Oh would this be so, so sweet for Virginia.

The 2019 team beat the Hokies 39-30 to go off to play for the ACC Championship. Virginia lost 15 straight in the series before that going back to 2003, and it lost last year’s regular season finale.

Now it gets to beat its rival for the second time in three seasons and knock it out of a bowl.

The Virginia offense will get held down just enough to keep this from getting out of hand, but Virginia Tech won’t be able to keep up.

Why Virginia Will Win

Grind, grind, grind.

The Cavaliers continue to get it done by not making mistakes, playing amazing D, and but hitting just about everything when it gets a shot. Virginia Tech is (usually) great from the field, it doesn’t have an issue with turnovers, and it’s not afraid to fire away from outside.

The styles are sort of similar in terms of overall effectiveness, but Virginia is better from three, turns the ball over less, and is far better at clamping down to take over a game, but …

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Virginia Tech is very, very good at what it does.

It loves to play games in the 60s, it’ll keep firing away form three, and it should be able to put the pressure on a Virginia team that prefers not to be have the tempo dictated.

Yeah, the Hokies struggled at Syracuse, but that was an aberration on its worst shooting day of the season. They’re much, much better at getting to the line than Virginia is – it’s a stylistic choice – if they can start hitting from the outside, the entire tenor of the game shifts.

What’s Going To Happen

Fine, so they really don’t play the same style.

They both want to keep the score manageably low, they’re both great at making teams do what they want, and they both handle pressure just fine. Here’s the problem for Virginia Tech, though …

It’ll shoot a lot of threes, but it won’t make enough of them and it won’t do anything on the offensive boards. The Hokies have been ice cold over the last three games from the outside, and Virginia isn’t the team to go against when you’re trying to bust out of a shooting slump.

Virginia (5-4) vs Virginia Tech (4-6) Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

Very, very, very quietly, Virginia has been on a roll. It was a brutal first part of the season, but it got on a nice run starting with the upset over North Carolina, and has kept it all going with four straight wins.

Now it’s coming off of its most complete offensive performance of the season in the 43-32 win over Boston College – the team really is getting better as the season is going on.

And then there’s Virginia Tech – who’s trending in the opposite direction.

The Hokies struggled through health issues early on, and over the last month, the offense has collapsed, the defense is struggling way too much, and there just hasn’t been the slightest bit of luck.

Playing Clemson will make anyone look bad – the Hokies weren’t awful, but they lost 45-10 last week – as a part of a rough run. The O can’t convert on fourth downs, the D is breaking as well as bending, and the secondary had struggled. Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong is coming off of a few sharp performances.

Week 15 College Schedule

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies are still able to move the ball through all of the issues.

There are quarterback concerns after injuries – including a scary incident with Hendon Hooker last week against Clemson – and inconsistencies, and the ground game has stalled, but the passing game hasn’t been bad.

When the O is working, the ground attack is rolling. This starts with getting Khalil Herbert into open spaces and letting him rumble. It’s no coincidence that the team’s struggles kicked in when he got hurt, but now should build off the 21 carries he got last week against Clemson. However …

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

The Virginia defensive front is great at getting to the quarterback and the run D has been fantastic lately. It helps statistically to face a Boston College team that didn’t really run – along with Abilene Christian – but it was able to hold down North Carolina and only allowed over 180 yards once.

This isn’t be as good as last year’s 39-30 classic, but Virginia will pull off a second straight win in the rivalry after losing the previous 15. The Cavaliers are sharper on both sides of the ball, but it’ll be another battle.

Virginia Tech (8-3) vs. Virginia (8-3) Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

Okay, Bryce Perkins. Now it’s on.

The Virginia star quarterback failed to hit half of his passes in last year’s game against Virginia Tech, but he was still brilliant with 259 passing yards, three touchdowns, 112 rushing yards …

And one very, very big fumbled handoff that ended last year’s insane 34-31, Hokie win in overtime.

Now it’s Perkins’ time for redemption.

He’s had an okay year, but not a special one. Even so, been stronger on the ground – with two 100-yard rushing days before the blowout win over Liberty – and with no picks in his last three games. He’s playing his best all-around ball of the year at just the right time.

On the other side, the great Cavalier pass rush has to be effective from the start. The Virginia Tech offensive line is doing a good job, but it struggled a bit against the outstanding pressure from the Pitt D, allowing three sacks and ten tackles for loss. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies still beat the Panthers 28-0.

Freshman quarterback Hendon Hooker was so bothered by the Pitt pass rush that he averaged close to 12 yards per pass with two touchdowns, no picks, and connected on ten of his 13 throws.

The guy has been unflappable.

He’s not making mistakes, he’s taking what the defenses are giving him, and he’s providing a downfield element that might just change around the Hokie program.

Virginia Tech has won six of its last seven games – Hooker wasn’t able to go against Notre Dame.

He’s been great, and the defensive side has stepped up its play, too. The Hokie run defense has been a wall, allowing fewer than 65 rushing yards in each of its last three games, and fewer than 100 in five of its last seven after gettin ripped up by Duke.

Virginia’s ground game has stepped it up with 16 touchdown runs in the last five games, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever (pause to take breath) ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER mess with a college football streak.

Most of the players in this game were barely running around the last time Virginia was able to get by Virginia Tech.

2003. 15 straight years. This time around, the ACC Coastal title is on the line with the winner going off to face Clemson next weekend.

This Virginia team is good, it’s playing well, Perkins is terrific, the linebacking corps is a killer – with the parts to bother Hooker the Hokie all game long – and the game is in Charlottesville.

Virginia Tech is playing better, Hooker is that good, the defense is coming up with two straight shutouts, and …

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever …
