Why Tennessee Will Win

The Vol offense is still going to be explosive.

Everything went wrong in the blowout loss to South Carolina. The College Football Playoff dream is gone, and worse yet, star QB Hendon Hooker suffered a torn ACL.

Backup Joe Milton isn’t Hooker, but he has all the tools and skills to bomb away deep, and the running game is there to take over to keep the pressure off the new guy under center.

Tennessee is known for it’s high-flying fun show down the field, but it also ran for 200 yards or more six times – it’s 8-0 when it gets past 152 rushing yards.

Vanderbilt gives up 154 rushing yards per game, but …

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Can the Commodores really go bowling?

They managed to shock Kentucky and Florida over the last two weeks to make this for six wins and bowl eligibility. How?

The defense is giving up big plays, but not a slew of little ones – if that makes any sense.

Florida’s Anthony Richardson bombed away for 400 yards, but he only hit 58% of his throws and there wasn’t any running game. Kentucky’s passing attack didn’t do anything – Will Levis didn’t have any time – but the ground attack worked. Vanderbilt managed to win both games because of …

Completion percentage.

Vandy is 4-0 when teams hit fewer than 60% of their passes, and 1-6 when allowing more than that.

Joe Milton has a lot of positives. Being accurate isn’t one of them, but …

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Tennessee pick itself up off the mat?

The running game will do most of the heavy lifting and the defense will be good enough. Vanderbilt will throw well, but it won’t take over on the ground like it’ll need to.

It’ll make this interesting, but there will be just enough explosion from the Vols to get out alive.

Tennessee vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Commodores are making a big late push.

It might be a wee bit late in the process to get an NCAA Tournament bid, but they’re picking a great time to play their best basketball of the year with three wins in their last four games.

They’re shooting a whole lot better, they’re hitting their threes, and this has been a different team over the last two weeks than the one that lost to Tennessee 68-60 in mid January.

Combine the improved offense with good defense from three, and this is a dangerous team.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Tennessee Will Win

Tennessee is playing well, too.

The Vols are taking and making their threes, they’re hitting their shots from the inside, too, and they’re doing a great job of taking over games in their three-game winning streak.

They didn’t shoot all that well in the first game against the Commodores, but they were great on the free throw line and the defense forced a ton of turnovers – they’re finding ways to win.

And then there’s the home factor …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Tennessee is 5-6 away from home with two of those wins coming in the last week. Now it’s back in Thompson-Boling where it’s 12-0 and dominating from three.

Talk about shooting better in familiar surroundings, the Vols have hit double-digit threes in nine of their 12 home games and just twice in the 11 games away from home.

It might not hit ten threes against a Vanderbilt defense that’s strong from the outside, but it’ll push through to a good business-like win.

Tennessee vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

Vanderbilt just doesn’t score enough.

New Mexico is the only team in college football that scores fewer points than the Commodore attack that averages just over 15 points per game. When the Tennessee offense is humming, it seems like it can get that on one drive.

Even when Vandy’s attack is moving the ball – it did a nice job of balancing things out in last week’s 31-17 loss to Ole Miss – it’s not finishing things off with points.

There just aren’t enough third down conversions to keep things moving, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Tennessee doesn’t do much defensively to come up with third down stops.

Yeah, this has been a great first season for the Vols under head coach Josh Heupel, but the D is getting hit hard by everyone in the SEC.

Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky all did what you’d expect them to do, but Kentucky had the most fun of anyone this season with over 600 yards in in the 45-42 Vol win.

Again, Vanderbilt showed last week that it could move things along just a little bit. The Tennessee offensive line gives up too many sacks, the attack holds the ball for about 24 minutes a game, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

It seems like Vanderbilt has been close.

It punched its weight in losses to Missouri and Kentucky before getting by Ole Miss, it almost beat South Carolina, and last week’s Ole Miss game was at least competitive. Yeah …

Tennessee will score on its first two drives to get up fast, and it’ll coast from there.

Why Tennessee Will Win

There wasn’t a problem the first time these two met with a 20-point Volunteer win in mid-January. Tennessee was terrific form the field, stopped the Commodores from doing much from the outside, and it didn’t have to deal with a whole lot of drama.

But few teams have had to deal with a lot of anything against Vandy, loser of ten of its last 12 games. It’s not an awful team, but it’s horribly inconsistent and it doesn’t give itself a whole lot of breaks – there aren’t enough rebounds or big defensive plays.

It’s the worst team in the SEC at stopping teams from the field, but …

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

You want to talk inconsistency, meet your 2021 Tennessee Volunteers after the 2021 kicked in.

The offense has this strange ability to go absolutely dead cold, especially from the outside. It couldn’t hit 30% from three against Kentucky, and lost. It couldn’t hit 30% from three against LSU, and lost.

It’s been able to win a few times over the last few weeks when it couldn’t get to the 30% mark from the outside, but if Vandy can just get out and bother the Vols shooters enough to screw up – is hasn’t allowed 31% from three in any of the last three games – it has a chance.

What’s Going To Happen

Jerry Stackhouse’s team will bring it at home with a great effort and enough pop to keep it close, but Tennessee has lost two of its last three and is coming off a total clunker against Kentucky.

It’s going to be motivated, and most importantly, it’s going to shoot well enough in the second half to get out with a win.

Tennessee (2-6) vs Vanderbilt (0-8) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Tennessee Will Win

Tennessee is in bad shape, and Vanderbilt is having a rougher time.

The Commodores not only haven’t won a game, and they’re not only dealing with an interim head coach in Todd Fitch after Derek Mason was fired, but they’re also coming off a totally miserable performance against Missouri.

The coverage of the groundbreaking moment from PK Sarah Fuller glossed over that the offense never gave her any chances to try a real kick. Vandy lost 41-0, came up with just 196 yards of total offense, and the Vols can use the break.

Tennessee, for all of its problems, has at least put up a few passing yards. It hasn’t been consistent or smooth sailing, but the team has hit the 240-yard mark in each of the last two games. Now it gets to go against the SEC’s least efficient pass defense. But …

Week 15 College Schedule

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Tennessee can’t move the ball, even a little bit.

The Vols are dead last in the SEC in third down conversions, generating points is like pulling teeth, and there’s been no consistency whatsoever to the attack.

Tennessee hasn’t hit the 20-point mark in any of its last five games.

Vanderbilt isn’t doing a whole lot right, but for the most part, it’s been able to hit its third down chances, the offensive line hasn’t been awful in pass protection, and the offense moved well before the disaster of a Missouri game.

What’s Going To Happen

Fuller will get a chance to hit a kick.

Vanderbilt might be struggling through COVID issues as well as all the other things happening with the program, but it gets a reeling Tennessee team that can’t seem to do anything right.

However, Tennessee keeps on pressing. It’s not for a lack of effort – injuries and execution are an issue.

It’ll be a low-scoring slugfest with the Vols finally getting a moment of fun.

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Can the Commodores get the running game going?

The offense might not be consistent, and it might have had major problems scoring or long, long stretches, but when the ground attack works, the team can usually maintain control.

Vanderbilt is 3-1 when it runs for 150 yards or more – the one loss coming to UNLV – and 0-7 when it doesn’t.

The offensive line has had issues all season long generating any sort of a consistent push, but when it’s able to do the bare minimum, everything else seems to kick in.

In its final game of the year, this is where Vandy has to bust out the O that pounded away on East Tennessee State last week. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Tennessee Will Win

Beyond Tennessee not being East Tennessee State, the Vol run defense has managed to be terrific against all but the very, very good ground attacks.

Kentucky is doing nothing but running so far, Georgia is Georgia, and Georgia State came up with something out of the blue in the opening game of the year. Those are the only three FBS teams to run for 150 yards or more.

Vanderbilt doesn’t have an efficient enough passing game to make up for the ground attack when it’s not rocking, but the secondary might end up being the bigger problem if the Volunteer passing game stays hot.

Jarrett Guarantano has had his ups and downs this season, but he’s been brilliant over the last few games. He only threw eight passes against Kentucky, but he connected on seven of them with two scores and a few big plays.

Against Missouri last week he threw for 415 yards and two touchdowns. When he’s on, the Vols can rock the deep plays.

Vanderbilt isn’t rocking anything with its passing game.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a wee bit lost in the fog of the season, but Tennessee is just a few plays away from having a relatively special campaign. Had it been able to pull of those early games against Georgia State and BYU, it would be 8-3 right now and everyone would be gushing.

As it is, it’ll have to settle for being 7-5 and on its way to a bowl game before going into the offseason as a program on the rise. First, it’ll roll past a Vanderbilt team that won’t have enough offense to keep up after the Vols get up early with two quick scoring drives.
