Georgia Southern vs UAB Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

How’s the Clay Helton era going so far?

All Georgia Southern did over the first two weeks was go 2-0, hang 144 points on the board, come up with the most yards ever by an opponent in Lincoln, Nebraska – 642 – and became the proverbial last straw for the Scott Frost era with the Huskers.

The program known for its dangerous running game is winging it all around the yard with former Buffalo QB Kyle Vantrease going off. and now the offense rolls into Birmingham to make UAB try to keep up.

UAB turned it over four times in the loss at Liberty, the defense hasn’t been a rock so far, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why UAB Will Win

The Blazer pass defense has been fine.

Alabama A&M wasn’t able to do anything, Liberty never got into a groove, and now the team should be settled in at home. The D has been great so far on third downs, the rushing offense should be good enough to keep the Eagle offense on the sidelines, and the pass rush should be a problem for Vantrease.

The Blazers might not be flashy so far offensively, but they’ve been solid. As long as they don’t fumble like they did against Liberty, they should be able to keep up.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Is Georgia Southern really that amazing?

It’s second in the nation in total offense behind Minnesota, the offensive line has yet to allow a sack, and moving the chains hasn’t been a problem. The team was able to handle Nebraska on the road, so can UAB be that much more difficult?

Yeah.

The Blazer defense will rise up with a brilliant performance, the offense won’t turn it over like it did against the Flames last week, and the Bryant Vincent era will get its first big win by controlling the clock and generating more pressure than Georgia Southern has seen so far.

UAB vs Liberty Game Preview

Why UAB Will Win

It was just one game against an overmatched team, but head coach Bryant Vincent got a strong performance from his team in a 59-0 win over Alabama A&M.

It’s the tune-up the team needed to start the season. Jermaine Brown and the ground game ripped off yards in chunks, the passing attack got everything down right away, and the defense got in the backfield when it had to.

Liberty struggled with the Southern Miss running game in the 29-27 overtime win. The Golden Eagles got a great push, ran for 252 yards, and UAB is going to hammer away on the Flame defensive front from the start.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Liberty Will Win

Liberty might not have Malik Willis under center anymore, but it has playmakers.

QB Kaidon Salter led the team with 65 rushing yards and was okay through the air, the attack was balanced, and everyone came through when they absolutely had to.

The D forced five takeaways, and the O should be a whole lot better if it stops with the mistakes – three turnovers and 12 penalties aren’t going to be the norm.

The Flames should own third down for stretches, UAB is going to have a far tougher time getting things working down the field like it did against Alabama A&M, and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be a second straight thriller for Liberty.

Both defense will come up with enough stops in the middle of the game to cause a slew of ebbs and flows, but the Blazers will be a bit more consistent over the last 20 minutes.

The UAB blazer running game will be almost as strong as what Southern Miss brought last week – only without the turnovers and third down stalls.

UAB vs Alabama A&M Game Preview

Why Alabama A&M Will Win

The Bulldogs have a passing game.

They were fourth in the FCS last season averaging over 367 yards per game thanks to 6-5 QB Aqeel Glass and a loaded receiving corps that gets back Abdul-Fatai Ibrahim, Dee Anderson, and Odieu Hilaire. This trio of targets will give everyone problems this season.

UAB will be in the first game post-Bill Clark era, and the offense has to prove it can start doing even more. It was okay last season, but there’s a shot Alabama A&M makes this a bit of a shootout, and …

Why UAB Will Win

Nah.

Yes, Alabama A&M has an offense that can do enough to make the game interesting, but the UAB secondary should be terrific with a slew of all-star talents who should be able to hold up.

The Blazer offense will be fine. Alabama A&M won’t generate enough of a pass rush to matter – offensive line and pass protection will need to be one of UAB’s big improvements – and there won’t be any big chances taken.

The O will keep pounding away, and the defense should be able to take care of the rest, even with the Bulldogs bombing away. Don’t expect the A&M ground attack to do much of anything.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

UAB beat Alabama A&M 38-7 to open up the 2017 season, and had a few problems against Alabama State get get 2019 going and against Central Arkansas at the beginning of 2020.

There will be a few rough spots, but the Blazers will methodically keep things moving, and the secondary will come up with enough second half stops to get by.

2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year

QB Frank Harris, Sr. UTSA

Last year it was RB Sincere McCormick – along with a solid defense – that took over on way to the Conference USA title and a breakthrough season for the UTSA program. The quarterback was pretty good, too.

The 6-0, 200-pound lefty was the main man leading the way, and now this is his team more than ever after two terrific seasons. Harris has connected on 66% of his career passes, kept the interceptions down with six in each of the last two years, and in 2021 he started hitting his deep throws a bit more. Combine all of that with over 1,200 rushing yards and 15 scores, and this might be his league, too.

2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year

LB KD Davis, Sr. North Texas

The 6-0, 229-pounder isn’t huge, and he might not have the build of a normal middle linebacker, but he’s got great range and he makes a whole lot of tackles.

The 2021 First Team and 2020 Honorable Mention All-Conference USA honoree made 284 tackles – leading Conference USA with 121 stops – with 11 sacks and 28 tackles for loss over the last three seasons for a team not known for its defense. In his fifth year, expect him to be even more disruptive.

Conference USA Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Conference USA preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

Just how much does it hurt Conference USA to lose Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss to the Sun Belt this season?

The league had to quickly scramble this offseason to change up its schedule, it’s having to do even more to keep the business going with Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB and UTSA bolting in 2023 – Liberty, New Mexico State, Sam Houston and Jacksonville State will enter the fun – and all of that will likely be the main focus of the 2022 season.

And then UAB, UTSA and WKU should be the stars of the conference again.

Where’s the big surprise going to come from?

The problem is that too many schedules have too many tough non-conference games, but it should be entertaining as several teams will likely be fighting for bowl eligibility over the final few weeks.

Knowing there’s going to be a crazy outlier to screw this all up, here are the 2022 Conference USA preseason predictions.

UAB Blazers Preview 2022

It could be argued that Bill Clark deserves to be mentioned with the top coaches in college football over the last five seasons.

The UAB football program was sleeping. It wasn’t gone in 2015 and 2016, but it didn’t need time to bounce back once it was able to play again in 2017. Clark had all the pieces together, won 43 games over the last five years with five winning seasons, five bowl bids, two Conference USA titles, and one other conference championship appearance.

It’s not quite right to say that he did the most with the least, but he certainly was able to maximize what he had to work with.

Back issues forced Clark to leave UAB, and now it’s up to offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent to step in as the interim head coach with all the pressure in the world to keep it all going.

Is this the coaching staff to take UAB to another level as it goes into the American Athletic Conference next year? There’s a whole lot of experience, star power, and talent there to figure it out.

The machine doesn’t stop.

UAB Blazers Preview 2022: Offense

The Blazer offense is going to keep on rolling like normal. The coaching staff that handled the attack isn’t going to change up anything, and with seven returning starters and a slew of decent reserves ready to do more, there won’t be a step back if the receivers step up.

The O has to do even more. It did a decent job of moving the chains and not making mistakes, but it only averaged 387 yards and 29.5 points per game. The ground game was good, the downfield passing attack was fantastic, but …

The receiving corps has to find more dangerous playmakers. The Blazers lost their top starters and has to hope for the deep threats to step up … maybe.

Trea Shropshire led the team with 702 yards with seven scores – averaging 26 yards per catch – and he’s still listed on the roster, but he was also in the transfer portal this offseason. He’s the No. 1 target, assuming he’s still in the mix.

Tight end Gerrit Prince led the team with 36 touchdowns and ten scores. He’s gone, but Hayden Pittman is a good receiver making 22 catches for 192 yards and a score. RaJae Johnson-Sanders is off to Troy, putting Ryan Davis and a slew underused parts from last year in the spotlight.

The quarterback situation should be settled. Dylan Hopkins is the main man after hitting 66% of his passes for 2,275 yards and 18 touchdowns with five rushing scores, and longtime playmaker Tyler Johnston is off to Towson. However, Baylor’s Jacob Zeno is an interesting option who’ll start out as the No. 2, but has the talent to take over if Hopkins struggles at all.

The Blazers have one of the best 1-2 rushing combinations in Conference USA. DeWayne McBride ran for 1,371 yards and 13 touchdowns, Jermaine Brown ran for 631 yards and seven scores, and they’ll both work behind a line that has to replace a few good parts, but gets back a strong left tackle in Kadeem Telford along with fellow all-star Matthew Trehern at guard. Now the pass protection has to be far better, and the tackles for loss allowed have to slow down.

UAB Blazers Preview 2022: Defense

The defense should be able to carry the team for stretches. It was No. 1 in the conference and 16th in the nation allowing 329 yards and 23 points per game, doing a fantastic job against the run and holding up well against the better bombers. It’ll help that …

The secondary will be one of the team’s biggest strengths. Safety Keondre Swoopes and corner Starling Thomas picked off four passes and broke up 14 – they should be in the all-star mix again. Safety Will Boler also earned All-Conference USA honors – tying for second on the team with 62 stops – and there’s decent depth across the board.

The pass rush loses leading sackers Alex Wright and Justin Thomas from their outside linebacker spots, but Kyle Harrell can get behind the line – he made 5.5 tackles for loss – and leading tackler Noah Wilder is back after making 93 stops on the inside. Former Blazer star and 2020 leading tackler Kristopher Moll left for Washington.

The defensive front three has a good veteran defensive tackle in Fish McWilliams to work around, but losing Antonio Moultre to Miami hurts. Overall there’s decent size up front, but Moultre and Tyree Turner were key reasons why the run defense was so strong, and the depth is going to take a while to develop.

It’s a new world for Conference USA with the loss of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss over to the Sun Belt. There are still plenty of good teams still around, but the league is hanging on through the expansion process.

Can 2021’s star teams keep it all going? UTSA and WKU won’t be quite as good, UAB should be strong, and UTEP might just keep on stunning.

If Florida Atlantic can rise up after a down season, and if North Texas and Middle Tennessee can be bowl-worthy again, it should be a fun run.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …
