2023 NFL draft: Prediction for the Patriots in the first round

Here’s a final prediction. Who will the Patriots draft on Thursday night?

It’s nearly impossible to guess what New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is going to do at any NFL draft, much less one where he’ll have his highest draft pick in nearly 15 years.

Enter the 2023 NFL draft on Thursday.

The Patriots are sitting pretty with the No. 14 overall pick and more options than a kid with a bucket of Halloween candy.

Upgrading the defense will always be a possibility when dealing with a defensive-minded head coach, but then again, Belichick watched from the sidelines as his offense got squished like a bug on a windshield in the 2022 season. The offseason theme has been improving on the offensive side of the ball, and I’m convinced that effort will continue on the first draft night.

Although the Patriots would be better off drafting a receiver, such as Zay Flowers, Jaxon Smith-Njigba or even Quentin Johnston, I’m predicting they’ll add another offensive lineman in the first round for the second year straight with Georgia offensive tackle Broderick Jones.

The unit already has Trent Brown, and veteran Riley Reiff is getting guaranteed money, which is a good sign he’ll get to see the field in the 2023 season as well. But Reiff, 34, isn’t a long-term solution for the Patriots. There’s no certainty he’ll be a short-term one, either.

The Patriots need to get younger and improve at protecting quarterback Mac Jones in the pocket. Jones isn’t blessed with the sort of athletic talent as Josh Allen or Tua Tagovailoa, when it comes to scrambling ability and buying more time in the pocket. In many ways, he’s a bit of a throwback option at quarterback. If the Patriots want to make that work, they’re going to have to make protecting him a priority.

And it all starts up front with a large, athletic and talented player like Broderick. Before the Patriots can win on the scoreboard, they need to win in the trenches first.

2023 NFL mock draft round-up: Experts make final picks for Patriots at No. 14

A round-up of the final Round 1 predictions in the 2023 NFL draft.

A rush of final predictions are pouring in with the 2023 NFL draft slated for Thursday night.

It’s obvious at this point that the New England Patriots are the most unpredictable team on the board with the No. 14 overall pick. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing for a team that has done the work in the offseason to ensure they didn’t have any glaring holes heading into the draft.

Granted, there are areas that definitely need upgrading, including wide receiver, offensive tackle, cornerback and inside linebacker. But the Patriots are in a desired position of being able to take the best available player on the board when they’re on the clock.

That has made for a lot of fun mock drafts when it comes to what the team might do with the No. 14 pick. Today, we’re rounding up all of the final predictions from NFL experts ahead of Thursday’s big event.

2023 NFL draft poll: Vote for who the Patriots should take No. 14 overall

Who should the Patriots draft with the No. 14 overall pick?

The New England Patriots will have no shortage of options heading into the 2023 NFL draft.

They could keep their focus on rebuilding an offense that stunk to the highest of heavens last season, or they could continue beefing up their already talented defense.

Or, will they throw us a major curveball entirely by trading quarterback Mac Jones and going out and selecting a new player to star under center?

Bill Belichick has always been a coach that keeps his cards close to his chest, and there has been no greater example of that than the NFL draft. Take last year’s draft for example: No one expected him to spend a first-round draft pick on The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga offensive guard Cole Strange.

It was one of those out-of-left-field picks that has become the norm whenever the Patriots are on the clock. Will there be another one in store on Thursday night?

Vote in the poll below on who you think the Patriots should draft with the No. 14 overall pick.

New Orleans Saints’ team needs entering 2023 NFL draft

The New Orleans Saints’ top team needs entering the 2023 NFL draft include upgrades along the DL, TE, and improved depth at LB, DB, and WR:

The New Orleans Saints did a great job addressing their needs in free agency, holding onto some of their most important players while plugging holes on the depth chart with veteran signings. That significantly reshaped their list of team needs going into Round 1 of the 2023 NFL draft.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis may have downplayed the priority with which they need to address some concerns in his pre-draft press conference, but some areas remain more worrisome than others. Here’s a quick look at the Saints’ most pressing team needs (plus some early-round targets to monitor) in the final hours leading up to the draft:

The New Orleans Saints have some obvious needs to address in the 2022 NFL draft, and the first round brings real options to help solve their problems. We’ve already identified which prospects the Saints have been connected to, and who they should be targeting on Thursday night — now let’s take a deeper look at why those positions are areas of concern.
