Bracket Update: Texas No. 9 seed in ESPN bracketology projection

The Texas Longhorns were solidly in the tournament as a No. 9 seed in a recent bracket prediction.

It’s that time of the year. College basketball fans across the country have their eye on bracket updates from leading NCAA tournament analysts.

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi released his recent projections at 12:30 a.m. CT on March 15. It placed the Longhorns solidly in the tournament as a No. 9 seed.

The projection pits Texas against No. 8 seeded Nebraska, and in the same region as the reigning national champion UConn Huskies who defeated Texas earlier this season. Much has changed since the Longhorns faced the projected No. 1 seeded Huskies, but the matchup probably isn’t one Texas should relish.

On the other hand, anything can happen in March. It just takes a good weekend to reach the Sweet 16, and that’s what Texas hopes it can find in the early going of the NCAA tournament.

Other notable projections placed rivals in the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas A&M Aggies into the field. The Aggies were noted as the last team in the tournament while Oklahoma was given one of the last four byes. Given the Sooners won 20 games in the Big 12, they should be a lock to make it into the tournament.

The Kansas State Wildcats (19-14) are likely out of contention despite defeating Texas on Wednesday. The team was eliminated from the Big 12 tournament in a loss to Iowa State, 76-57.

NCAA tournament predictions see changes as more teams add data points in conference tournament games. Even so, Texas looks to be safe heading into Sunday’s tournament announcement.

Texas basketball HC Rodney Terry and players discuss No. 15 Colgate

Rodney Terry and Texas players speak ahead of the Colgate game.

If you thought the Texas basketball program would take Colgate lightly, you could be mistaken. Texas head coach Rodney Terry and his team discussed the importance of the matchup and the task ahead of them.

Rodney Terry had the following to say ahead of Thursday’s bout in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

I don’t think of Colgate as an underdog. Colgate can play with anybody in this tournament . . . Any time you score 80 (points per game), you can beat anybody in the country on any given day.

The team appears to understand it will likely face an atmosphere similar to the one it faced in Kansas City for the Big 12 Tournament title against Kansas. Veteran forward Brock Cunningham imparted his own wisdom from the team’s 2021 early exit against Abilene Christian and it’s 2022 game against Virginia Tech.

“They will root for the under-seed.” Cunningham added, “especially when Texas is that top seed.”

Rodney Terry echoed the sentiment sharing, “I think our guys understand when they signed up to play at Texas that they were gonna get everybody’s best game.”

We will see if those are merely words or if Texas is that prepared.

Five reasons Texas HC Rodney Terry will be assessed on March success

We look at why we’ll assess Terry’s coaching job on what he does in the NCAA Tournament.

We’re a day away from Texas head coach Rodney Terry’s biggest slate of games. For the Longhorns’ acting head coach, the task is simple and straightforward: Get to the second weekend.

Terry and the Texas Longhorns (26-8) face the Colgate Raiders (26-8) in what could be a sharp-shooting contest from the outside. To date, the game is the most important event of the season for the 2022-23 squad.

Everything the team has done to this point is important. Taking care of business in high profile games and in the conference tournament sets the Longhorns up for a manageable tournament path. That said, the team needs to capitalize or there will likely be changes.

If Terry and company beat Colgate and the winner of Texas A&M/Penn State, the administration can’t ignore what the coaching staff has accomplished. If they can’t make it out of the weekend, the athletic department might reconsider who leads the team.

Here are a few reasons why we’ll judge Terry’s coaching job on what he does in the NCAA Tournament.

Can Texas win the men’s basketball national championship?

We power rank Texas among teams most likely to make a Tournament run.

The highlight of spring has finally arrived. March Madness begins on Tuesday with play-in games ahead of Thursday’s chaos.

Many wonder how long the Longhorns can stay in the tournament. The team’s inability to reach the Sweet 16 in recent seasons has left a lasting impression about the program. This team appears to be different.

Texas head coach Rodney Terry may have inherited a Lamborghini of a roster, but it certainly looks like he knows how to drive. Even in games where his team got thoroughly outplayed, Terry has found ways to make the final score look closer than the game itself. If Texas isn’t winning a game, it is often in the game until the end.

Let’s look at where Texas ranks among top seeds capable of making a Final Four run.

Texas basketball makes list of teams with no “bad losses”

Texas is one of seven teams without a bad loss this season.

The Texas Longhorns have had a tremendous season. That stems in part from beating most of the teams they should beat.

Fox College Hoops shared a graphic that featured seven teams without a Quad 2, Quad 3 or Quad 4 loss.

Essentially, a Quad 1 game is one that involves facing a Top 30 team at home, Top 50 team at a neutral site or a Top 75 team on the road. Only within those parameters has Texas suffered its six losses.

The Houston Cougars and Alabama Crimson Tide were not present on that list, despite ranking at No. 1 and No. 2 in the latest bracket reveal. In fairness, the two teams have had more Quad 2, Quad 3, and Quad 4 matchups than some Big 12 teams.

Here’s a look at every team that hasn’t suffered a bad loss all season.

Bracket analyst ranks Texas a No. 2 seed in tournament prediction

Texas is trending towards a No. 2 seed.

The Texas Longhorns are heading into the final stretch in solid tournament positioning. One bracket ranks the team among college basketball’s elite.

College basketball bracket analyst Mike Decourcy has high esteem for the Longhorns ranking them as a No. 2 seed. Texas joins Tennessee, Kansas, and UCLA on the No. 2 line.

As far as seed ceilings, the Longhorns’ current projection might be the most realistic best-case scenario for the team. Ahead of Texas are Houston, Alabama, and Arizona, whose schedules might not afford many loss opportunities. The other No. 1 Purdue is solidly on the top line.

Arkansas, Gonzaga, and Kentucky enter this week’s bracket well below where their preseason expectations were. Gonzaga comes in as a No. 5 seed followed by Arkansas at No. 9 and Kentucky in a No. 11 play-in-game.

The Big 12 is well represented on the list with two No. 2 seeds, Iowa State and Baylor as No. 3 seeds, Kansas State as a No. 4, and TCU on the No. 5 line.

Texas will look to secure a top seed over the rest of February.
