Texas makes final three for Illinois State transfer Dusan Mahorcic

Illinois State transfer Dusan Mahorcic released his top three schools on Monday. Clemson, Texas, and Utah are the three schools involved.

Chris Beard has a decision to make regarding big men on his roster. Jericho Sims is hanging in the balance, still deciding whether or not he wants to go into the NBA. July 7 is the final day he can opt-out and return to Texas.

Until then, the Longhorns need to keep their options open in the transfer portal. Waiting around for Sims to make his decision could prove to be detrimental. If Sims decides to leave, other names in the portal could be snatched up.

Illinois State transfer Dusan Mahorcic could be the route Texas takes. The 6-foot-10, 230-pound big man released his top three schools on Monday. Clemson and Utah are the other two schools involved.

Mahorcic transferred to Illinois State from Moberly Community College for the 2020-2021 season. In 22 games, he averaged 9.9 points and 7.2 rebounds. The Serbian’s best performance of the season came early on against Ball State, recording a 14 point and 13 rebound double-double while shooting 70% from the floor.

Sims’ decision will impact not only Mahorcic’s transfer destination but how the starting lineup looks. Vanderbilt transfer Dylan Disu is another option at the five.

Former Michigan State LB Devin Hightower to reunite with former DC Mike Tressel in Cincinnati

Devin Hightower will reunite with former Michigan State defensive coordinator Mike Tressel in Cincinnati.

A few weeks back, Michigan State football 2020 recruit Devin Hightower entered the NCAA transfer portal. On Monday, he announced his new home: Cincinnati. Hightower will reunite with former MSU defensive coordinator Mike Tressel, who is now the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Cincinnati.

Hightower only played special teams snaps last year under Mel Tucker. The former three-star recruit out of Twinsburg, Ohio was the sixth member of the 2020 recruiting class to enter the portal as Mel Tucker continues to put his own stamp on the roster.

Tulsa transfer cornerback Akayleb Evans announces top five schools

If Sarkisian has taught us anything early on, acquiring more talent is necessary. Tulsa’s Akayleb Evans included UT in his top five schools.

Cornerback returns a ton of experience for Pete Kwiatkowski and Terry Joseph. D’Shawn Jamison and Josh Thompson are expected to be lockdown cornerbacks, while Chris Adimora will be entering his second season at nickel.

However, if Steve Sarkisian has taught us anything during his first sixth months, acquiring more talent is never a bad thing. Despite having two potential preseason All-Big 12 cornerbacks, another elite-level player could be entering the program.

When Tulsa cornerback Akayleb Evans entered the transfer portal, he quickly received 16 offers. On Sunday, the McKinney, Texas native trimmed his list down to five schools. Jackson State, Missouri, Notre Dame, Texas, and Texas Tech remain in the hunt.

Evans played in nine games last season, totaling 29 tackles and a sack. In pass coverage, the cornerback had three passes defended. No interceptions are on Evans’ resume quite yet.

After suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in 2019, Evans earned a medical hardship. Add on COVID-19 and the graduate still has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Playing time may not be imminent in Austin going into the 2021 season but a mass exodus is expected at defensive back after the year. Evans would have the opportunity to be a starter in Sarkisian’s second season.

Former Michigan State football QB Theo Day headed to Northern Iowa

Former 4-star quarterback Theo Day will be transferring to Northern Iowa after spending the first three seasons of his career at MSU.

Theo Day has been a member of the Michigan State football program for the past three seasons. A member of the 2018 recruiting class, the former 4-star quarterback decided to transfer out of the program this offseason.

A transfer destination for Day has been decided, as he will be attending the University of Northern Iowa, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference in the FCS.

Day was presumably passed on the depth chart by Payton Thorne, transfer Anthony Russo and Noah Kim, resulting in his decision to transfer.

MSU PG Tyson Walker listed in top 40 of ESPN’s college basketball transfer rankings

MSU newcomer Tyson Walker is considered one of the top 40 transfers in all of college basketball, according to Jeff Borzello of ESPN.

Michigan State newcomer Tyson Walker is considered one of the top 40 transfers in all of college basketball, according to Jeff Borzello of ESPN.

Borzello released his “College basketball transfer rankings for 2021-22” last week, and has the new Spartans’ point guard from Northeastern as No. 38. Borzello also has former Spartans’ guard Rocket Watts — who just announced this past weekend that he was going to Mississippi State — on his list at No. 50.

Here’s what Borzello had to say about Walker:

Walker was one of the best mid-major prospects available after winning CAA Defensive Player of the Year and earning first-team all-league honors. He averaged 18.8 points and 4.8 assists and should step in immediately as a starter at point guard for the Spartans.

And here’s what he said about Watts:

I’m still high on Watts as a scorer despite an inconsistent first two seasons in East Lansing. He was shoehorned into a pass-first role this past season but would be better suited as an off-ball scorer. He had 21 points in the regular-season finale against Michigan.

Walker will have at least two years of eligibility and should start for Michigan State right away at point guard. Based on his previous production and the importance he’ll be for the 2021-22 Spartans, I personally would have him higher on this list.

Rocket Watts announces he is transferring to Mississippi State

The most intriguing Spartan transfer has finally announced where he is playing the rest of his collegiate career.

[jwplayer NIG71kHM-PROpJzTY]

The most intriguing Spartan transfer has finally announced where he is playing the rest of his collegiate career. The one thing that will stay the same for Watts is that the initials of his college will be MSU. Watts will be playing for Mississippi State as announced on his Instagram.

Watts averaged 7.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game over 28 games played last season. Watts will look to immediately assume a starting role whether it is at the one or two.

Michigan State will have incoming transfer Tyson Walker, and incoming freshman’s Jaden Akins, Max Christie and Pierre Brooks II. Perhaps look for the Spartans to look for one more player through the transfer portal to help fill the void left by multiple players.

Three Spartans listed in 247Sports’ Top 100 transfers rankings

Three new Spartans are ranked amongst the top 100 transfers in the country, according to 247Sports.

Three new Spartans are ranked amongst the top 100 transfers in the country, according to 247Sports.

Clint Brewster of 247Sports outlined his top 100 transfers from this offseason, and three incoming transfers for Michigan State cracked his list. Those three Spartans are:

  • No. 79 – RB Kenneth Walker III (from Wake Forest)
  • No. 82 – LB Quavaris Crouch (from Tennessee)
  • No. 98 – LB Itayvion Brown (from Minnesota)

On the flip side of that, none of the many Spartans that have left the program through the transfer portal made this list. So that would suggest Michigan State has experienced quite some success in adding talented players via the portal while not losing any true key contributors.

I personally believe Walker and Crouch could be higher on this list based on the type of production they had at their previous schools. But it’s still impressive and nice to see these three guys recognized amongst the top 100 transfers in the country.

Report: Former MSU guard Rocket Watts heading to Mississippi State

It appears Rocket Watts is heading to Starkville to become a Mississippi State Bulldog.

[mm-video type=video id=01f3c17j9wh5xdpb0j6x playlist_id=01eqbz825g32p3akwt player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f3c17j9wh5xdpb0j6x/01f3c17j9wh5xdpb0j6x-94bc96c0600b72bfde06a5e50385bb0f.jpg]

It appears Rocket Watts is heading to Starkville to become a Mississippi State Bulldog.

On Thursday, rumblings of Watts heading to Mississippi State came out based on 247Sports expert predictions, and today college basketball insider Jeff Goodman reported he’s hearing the same thing. Below is the exact tweet from Goodman that suggests Watts is going to be a Bulldog:

At this point, it seems like we are just waiting for Watts to make it official himself…

Watts has appeared in 55 career games in his two seasons at Michigan State. He averaged 8.4 points and 2.2 assists per game in his career.

Good luck to Watts if he is in fact heading to Mississippi State. Maybe the Spartans will get to play Watts and the other MSU sometime soon.
