San Diego State vs Toledo Game Preview

Why Toledo Will Win

Uhhhhhh, San Diego State? Offense?

The Aztecs got down fast last week to Utah and had absolutely no answers whatsoever.

The ground game worked against Idaho State, but it didn’t do anything against the Utes or in the opener against Arizona. Even worse, there’s nothing happening with the passing attack to make up for it.

There’s a fine like the team walks with its style. It has to use its defense, it has to run the ball, and it has to get the job done ugly. The D hasn’t been up to its 2021 self, and the system is breaking down from there.

Yes, Toledo got rocked by Ohio State 77-21, but there’s enough of an offense get up fast and make the Aztecs have to try going on a real, live scoring drive.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why San Diego State Will Win

This should eventually start to work.

As it turns out, Arizona is good, and Utah is great, so as ugly as this has been – the Idaho State game should’ve been much more dominant than 38-7 – this is where the defense has to rise and shine.

Toledo has the offensive talent, but it’s not converting on third downs, the passing game isn’t been anything great, and as long as the SDSU defensive front can hold up against the run, it should be okay.

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

What’s Going To Happen

How do you possibly know if San Diego State can play or not?

The offense has been so inept, there’s no downfield passing game, and the defense has been so mediocre that …

Is this when it turns? Is this when it starts to work?

It’s going to be hot in Snapdragon, Toledo is coming off that beating by Ohio State, and San Diego State will finally work its style to its advantage. There won’t be anything pretty about this game, but the Atztecs will take a W no matter how it happens.

Ohio State vs Toledo Game Preview

Why Toledo Will Win

The Rockets are playing well.

They’re favored to be one of the contenders in the MAC, and they’ve had two tune-up games against LIU and UMass to get ready. Granted, they were supposed to beat them by a combined score of 92-10, but there hasn’t been any sort of a blip with good offensive balance and the mistakes kept to a minimum.

QB DeQuan Finn is going to be a problem.

He needs to be a bit more accurate, but he’ll test the Ohio State defense that’s been patting itself on the back for a great start, but …

Stopping Notre Dame apparently isn’t as big a deal as everyone made it out to be.

Finn has to get going on the ground and keep the attack rolling, the defensive plays behind the line have to continue, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Ohio State Will Win

Ohio State should be able to run the ball.

The offense hasn’t kicked in like it was supposed to. Jaxon Smith-Njigba hasn’t been 100%, CJ Stroud hasn’t put up massive numbers over the first two games – he’s been fantastic, though – and again, there’s a chance the D hasn’t been tested yet.

However, the running game has been solid, TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams have been great, and it should all work against a Rocket defensive front that gave up over 200 yards to UMass.

Defensively, focus everything on Finn. Slow down Finn, make him win through the air, beat Toledo.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Any and all criticism of Ohio State right now is nitpicky.

The Notre Dame game was a bit of a fight, and the O isn’t the high-flying fun show we all expected over the first two games, but if this isn’t the No. 1 team in the country right now, it’s playing like a solid two.

Be careful, though. Toledo isn’t going to pull off the upset, but it’s got a decent enough starting 22 to keep this interesting if the Buckeyes are looking to conserve fuel for the Big Ten opener against Wisconsin next week.

Remember, Toledo had Notre Dame in big, big trouble last year in a 32-29 loss, the 2019 team pushed Kentucky and beat BYU, and the 2015 team stunned Arkansas. And …

Ohio State will be just fine.

Toledo vs UMass Game Preview

Why UMass Will Win

The defense is going to be better under new/former head coach Don Brown than it’s been in past seasons. It didn’t stop Tulane cold in the 42-10 loss, but it wasn’t awful against the run, it didn’t allow too many big plays, and it wasn’t bad on third downs.

The team has to be sharper and can’t give away anything to Toledo. It turned it over three times – was -2 in turnover margin – but it owned the time of possession battle and did a strong job of keeping things moving even though …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Toledo Will Win

There was absolutely no UMass passing game whatsoever last week.

The ground game wasn’t bad – more grinding than great – but there wasn’t a thing happening through the air.

11 passes, four completions, 17 yards, three interceptions. That’s what the Minutemen generated against Tulane, and it’s not going to get much better against Toledo.

The Rockets were well balanced in the 37-0 breather against LIU, and they’re going to average well over five yards per carry to set the tone early.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

UMass doesn’t have an offense.

It will run here and there, but it doesn’t have the firepower to keep up with any sort of pace set by QB Dequan Finn and the offense that will move the ball however it wants to. The Rockets will score on the first two drives and cruise from there – UMass won’t have any answer.

It won’t be quite as bad as the 45-7 Toledo win in last year’s meeting, but it won’t be far off.

Toledo vs LIU Game Preview

Why LIU Will Win

The Sharks will be careful with the ball.

Toledo led the nation in fewest turnovers – they only gave it away seven times – and isn’t likely to give away a slew of easy chances. It’s going to be a hard enough game for LIU, and forget about it if it’s -2 or worse in turnover margin.

The offense can work around the running of Jonathan DeBique to try controlling the clock a bit. Toledo’s defense might have been among the best in the MAC last year – and should be strong again – but time of possession didn’t matter to the team. It’s up to the Shark offense to work the clock, shorten the game, and keep the ball for at least 35 minutes.

But …

Why Toledo Will Win

In theory the Sharks will control the ball and slow things down, but they won’t be good enough on third downs to make that happen.

LIU isn’t going to do much to push the ball down the field, and the O in general will have a hard time consistently moving the ball.

Toledo’s offense should be able to treat this as a live scrimmage.

It needs to get a slew of new receivers in sync with QB Dequan Finn, and O line has to be better in pass protection, and …

It’s all going to work just fine. Toledo should have enough offense to name its score.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

The Rockets will do whatever they want to.

Going back to 2014, Toledo has averaged 51 points in the six games against FCS teams. It’s about to hit that with ease as it gets out to a hot start and keeps on rolling through the third. LIU won’t have nearly enough offense to keep up.

25 Winningest Programs To Not Make The College Football Playoff

College Football Playoff: 25 winningest teams to not make the tournament

What are the 25 winningest programs to not make the College Football Playoff? Here are the top schools in the CFP era to miss out on the fun.

Cincinnati and Michigan were able to make the College Football Playoff last season. Their doors might have been blown off by Alabama and Georgia, respectively, but they at least brought some new energy to the mini-tournament.

The College Football Playoff has only been around for eight seasons and just 13 schools – Alabama, Cincinnati, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Washington – have played in it and just five won it all.

That means 90% of the FBS college football programs haven’t been in the post-season – at least the version that matters – since this grand experiment started.

That’s the equivalent of only 36 college basketball programs making the NCAA Tournament over the last eight years – which is a good idea, by the way, but I digress.

What college football programs were able to win a lot of games over the last eight years without the playoff payoff? 25 have won 60 or more games in eight seasons – averaging 7.5 a year, but it’s better than that considering some played a short schedule in 2020 – without getting the call.

If you didn’t get to 60 victories – no Texas, or Tennessee, or Nebraska, Michigan State, or North Carolina – you don’t get on the list. So with that, here are the 25 winningest teams to not make the College Football Playoff.

25. USC

Wins Since 2014: 60
Best Season in CFP Era: 2017, 11-3, Pac-12 champion, Rose Bowl win
Realistic Chance To Make College Football Playoff This Season: Strong

Bottom Line: USC might be last on this list, but it’s got the best shot of going to the College Football Playoff this year with Lincoln Riley and a loaded all-star team ready to roll. The 2020 team would’ve had a case for the CFP if it won the Pac-12 title to finish 6-0 – it lost to Oregon, but no unbeaten Power Five champ has ever been left out. It’s been a disappointing run since going 12-1 in 2008. That’s all about to change.
USC Preview | Top 10 PlayersSchedule Analysis

T22. NC State

Wins Since 2014: 61
Best Season in CFP Era: 2017, 9-4, Sun Bowl win
Realistic Chance To Make College Football Playoff This Season: Possible

Bottom Line: The Wolfpack have been strongly consistent since Dave Doeren took over, but they haven’t been able to get a turn in the ACC Championship mix – being in the same division with Clemson has something to do with that. This should be his best team yet, and if it can somehow get by the Tigers on the road, there’s a real shot at going 12-1 with an ACC Championship and a CFP shot. That’s a massive if, though.
NC State Preview | Top 10 PlayersSchedule Analysis

T22. Miami

Wins Since 2014: 61
Best Season in CFP Era: 2017, 10-3, ACC Championship loss, Orange Bowl loss
Realistic Chance To Make College Football Playoff This Season: Slim

Bottom Line: Miami flirted with something fun in 2017 with a 10-0 start before losing the last three games. However, had it beaten Clemson in the ACC Championship – it lost 38-3 – it would’ve been in the CFP. This year’s schedule is too tough for a reloading team – with road games at Clemson and Texas A&M – but new head coach Mario Cristobal might just restore the glory in a hurry.
Miami Preview | Top 10 PlayersSchedule Analysis

T22. Western Michigan

Wins Since 2014: 61
Best Season in CFP Era: 2016, 13-1, MAC champion, Cotton Bowl loss
Realistic Chance To Make College Football Playoff This Season: None

Bottom Line: Now-Minnesota head coach PJ Fleck led the way to a phenomenal 13-0 regular season with a MAC title in 2016, and it still wasn’t enough to get near the College Football Playoff. The Broncos have been good ever since, but they haven’t been able to come close to repeating the glory. They’ll be strong this season, but even if they can win at Michigan State and against Pitt – and can run through the MAC unbeaten – it still shouldn’t be enough for a CFP shot.

Toledo Rockets Preview 2022

This program is so freaking frustrating.

Toledo should be working on the third or fourth MAC title under Jason Candle, and yet year after year there’s something missing.

Candled the Rockets got the job done in 2017 with a MAC Championship, but he’s had the best overall team for six years – seven if you include this season – and he has just the one appearance in the title game and the only bowl win came when he stepped in for Iowa State-bound Matt Campbell when first taking over the gig in 2015.

So let’s try this again. Toledo – who lost five games last year by a touchdown or less – has the best team in the MAC. The schedule isn’t easy, and there are things that need fixing – penalties, a more accurate passing game, penalties, and more penalties – but it’s all there.

The coaching is strong, the all-star veterans are in place, and a winning season and bowl appearance should be a mortal lock.

Now win the MAC Championship again, Toledo.

Toledo Rockets Preview 2022: Offense

The offense led the MAC in scoring averaging 33 points per game, rolled for 435 yards per game, and was the best in the nation at limiting the turnovers with just seven on the year. So of the key all-stars are gone, but …

Dequan Finn is a quarterback to build around. The young, efficient playmaker threw 18 touchdown passes with just two picks and ran for 505 yards and nine scores. He needs to be a bit more accurate, but he’s a dynamic winner to build around. It’s his team with Carter Bradley transferring to South Alabama.

The receiving corps loses leading yardage receiver Isaiah Winstead to East Carolina and leading touchdown catcher Matt Landers to Arkansas. Even so, Devin Maddox is a quick veteran who led the way with 41 catches for 521 yards and four scores. Finn spreads the ball around, but the O needs several young parts to step up fast.

The pass protection needs to be stronger, and there were too many tackles for loss allowed, but it’s going to be another great group for the running game even with two starters gone, helped by getting an all-star caliber blocker in Nick Rosi somewhere up front after missing last year hurt.

Losing 1,400-yard, 15 touchdown back Bryant Koback early to the NFL – he’s with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent – hurts, but Finn was the second-leading rusher, and smallish-speedy backs Jacquez Stuart and Micah Kelly are back after combining to average 5.4 yards per carry on their 564 yards.

Toledo Rockets Preview 2022: Defense

The defense had a few tough meltdowns, had a problem with penalties, and it didn’t come up with enough takeaways, but it managed to lead the MAC in scoring defense and was second overall allowing 350 yards and 22 points per game.

With eight returning starters and a slew of all-stars, expect more of the same, especially out of the pass rush.

The Rockets get back veteran Jamal Hines on the outside coming off his best season in his four years. He led the way with ten sacks, Desjuan Johnson was second on the team with 4.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss on the other side, and Dyontae Johnson was a force on the weakside.

As long as Jackson Barrow can handle the work in the middle after his 42-tackle season, this will be the best linebacking corps in the MAC by a mile.

The outside linebackers take care of the pass rush, but DT Judge Culpepper is a good interior presence in a next to 310-pound anchor Cavon Butler.

The secondary loses a few good pieces, but the safety combination of Maxen Hook and Nate Bauer will combine for close to 150 tackles again, and Quinyon Mitchell and Chris McDonald are two aggressive corners who can handle themselves.

2022 Preseason CFN MAC Offensive Player of the Year

RB Lew Nichols, Soph. Central Michigan

Coming off a strong 2020 averaging close to seven yards per carry with over 500 rushing yards, he was all but unstoppable in 2021.

The 5-10, 220-pounder led the nation with 1,848 rushing yards and over 142 per game with 16 rushing scores and two receiving touchdowns. Steady, he came up with over 130 yards in each of the last eight games, and once again he’s going to be the featured star of the attack.

2022 Preseason CFN MAC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Jamal Hines, Sr. Toledo

The three-time All-MAC defender – First Team last season – is a true hybrid who can do a little of everything right. He’s an outside linebacker, but he’s really an edge rushing defensive end who’ll live behind the line for stretches.

The 6-3, 250-pounder made 88 tackles with ten sacks, 15 tackles for loss, and broke up eight passes. With all his experience and all his skill, he’s about to be an all-star gamewrecker again.

It’s the MAC. It’s the conference where worst-to-first is the norm, with 2020 winless Northern Illinois winning the MAC championship in 2021, everyone can beat anyone else, and Toledo will end up somewhere in the middle of it all.
